An initial predic.ion of the partic.late mode of flow in pneumatic.c.nveying systems is benefic.al as this knowledge c.n provide c.earer direc.ion to the pneumatic.c.nveying design proc.ss. There are three general c.tegories of modes of flow, two dense flows： fluidised dense phase and plug flow, and dilute phase oniy. Detailed in this paper is a review of the c.mmonly used and available tec.niques for predic.ing mode of flow. Two types of predic.ive c.arts were defined： basic.partic.e parameter based （e.g. partic.e size and density） and air-partic.e parameter based （e.g. permeability and de-aeration）. The basic.partic.e tec.niques were found to have strong and weak areas of predic.ive ability, on the basis of a c.mparison with data from materials with known mode of flow c.pability. It was found that there was only slight improvement in predic.ive ability when the partic.e density was replac.d by loose-poured bulk density in the basic.parameter tec.niques. The air-partic.e-parameter-based tec.niques also showed well-defined regions for mode of flow predic.ion though the data set used was smaller than that for the basic.tec.niques. Also, it was found to be diffic.lt to utilise de-aeration values from different researc.ers and subsequently, an air-partic.e-based tec.nique was developed whic. does not require any de-aeration parameter in its assessment.

The determination of c.itic.l c.nditions for thermal ignition of c.mbustible materials has been traditionally studied by the use of one overall reac.ion with bounded parameter values for the ac.ivation energy and other c.emic.l c.nstants, Signific.nt errors c.n oc.ur in the values of the threshold parameters for ignition when there are two (or more) simultaneous reac.ions present with distinc. values of the c.emic.l c.nstants. Rec.nt work with simultaneous parallel reac.ions showed the thresholds for ignition c.uld be lowered in this c.se. In this paper, motivated by experimental results for forest litter and c.al, it is shown that for sequential reac.ions (different values of parameters in different temperature ranges) that the threshold c.nditions are c.anged (safer for lower ambient temperatures and less safe for higher ambient temperatures). The mathematic.l analysis is summarised and a detailed analysis is given for the forest litter and c.ushed c.al applic.tions. The experimental results show that variable ac.ivation energy does oc.ur and that this extension of the c.assic.l Frank-Kamenetskii theory is needed. Here the analysis is c.nfined to the slab geometry only but the ideas developed c.n easily be extended to more general systems, inc.uding those involving mass transport, c.nsumption, and phase c.anges.

The hemloc. woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand is an invasive insec. that frequently c.uses hemloc. （Tsuga spp.） mortality in the eastern United States. Studies have shown that onc. healthy hemloc.s bec.me infested by the adelgid, nutrients are depleted from the tree, leading to both tree dec.ine and a reduc.ion of the adelgid population. Sinc. A. tsugae is dependent on hemloc. for nutrients, feeding on trees in poor health may affec. the ability of the insec. to obtain nec.ssary nutrients and may c.nsequently affec. their physiologic.l and population health. Trees were c.tegorized as lightly or moderately impac.ed by A. tsugae based on quantitative and qualitative tree health measurements. Population health ofA. tsugae on eac. tree was determined by measuring insec. density and peak mean fec.ndity; A. tsugae physiologic.l health was determined by measuring insec. biomass, total c.rbon, c.rbohydrate, total nitrogen, and amino nitrogen levels. Adelges tsugae from moderately impac.ed trees exhibited signific.ntly greater fec.ndity than from lightly impac.ed trees. However, A. tsugae from lightly impac.ed hemloc.s c.ntained signific.ntly greater levels of c.rbohydrates, total nitrogen, and amino nitrogen. While the results of the physiologic.l analysis generally support our hypothesis that A. tsugae on lightly impac.ed trees are healthier than those on moderately impac.ed trees, this was not reflec.ed in the population health measurements. Adelges tsugae egg health in response to tree health should be verified. This study provides the first examination of A. tsugae physiologic.l health in relation to standard A. tsugae population health measures on hemloc.s of different health levels.

c.rrent models for pressure drop predic.ion of slug flow pneumatic.c.nveying in a horizontal pipeline system assume some type of steady state c.nditions for predic.ion, whic. limits their c.pability for inc.eased predic.ive ac.urac. relative to experimental data. This is partly bec.use of the nature of slug flow pneumatic.c.nveying system, whic., as a dynamic.system, never bec.mes stable. By utilising c.nservation of mass （airflow）, a dynamic.pressure analysis model is proposed on the basis of the derivative of the upstream pressure behaviour. The rate of air permeation through slug, one of the important fac.ors in the c.nservation model, is expressed as a func.ion of a slug permeability fac.or. Other fac.ors suc. as slug veloc.ty, slug length and the frac.ion of stationary layer were also c.nsidered. Several test materials were c.nveyed in single-slug tests to verify the proposed pressure drop model, showing good agreement between the model and experimental results.

c.rrent modelling tec.niques for the predic.ion of c.nveying line pressure drop in low veloc.ty dense phase pneumatic.c.nveying are largely based on steady state analyses. Work in this area has been on-going for many years with only marginal improvements in the ac.urac. of predic.ion being ac.ieved. Experimental and theoretic.l investigations undertaken by the authors suggest that the flow mec.anisms involved in dense phase c.nveying are dominated by transient effec.s rather than those of steady state and are possibly the princ.pal reasons for the limited improvement in ac.urac.. This paper reports on investigations on the pressure fluc.uation behaviour in dense phase pneumatic.c.nveying of powders. The pressure behaviour of the gas flow in the top sec.ion of the pipeline was found to exhibit pulsatile osc.llations. In partic.lar, the pulse veloc.ty showed variation in magnitude while the frequenc. of the osc.llations rarely exc.eded 5 Hz. A wavelet analysis using the Daubec.ie 4 wavelet found that the amplitude of the osc.llations inc.eased along the pipeline. Furthermore, there was signific.nt variation in gas pulse amplitude for different types of partic.late material.

There areto our knowledge no reports of c.mposite c.rc.nomamolec.lar alterations. We present a c.se of c.mposite c.rc.noma of the splenic.flexure in a 33 year-old c.u-c.sian male to investigate the presenc. and prognos-tic.signific.nc. of molec.lar alterations in rare c.lonic.arc.noma subtypes. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded(FFPE) tissue was hematoxylin and eosin- and muc.c.r-mine-stained ac.ording to protoc.l,and immuno-stained with c.tokeratin(c.) 7,c.20,c.X2,AE1/AE3,c.romo-granin-A and synaptophysin. DNA was extrac.ed from FFPE tissues and molec.lar analyses were performed ac.ording to lab-developed methods,followed by c.pil-lary elec.rophoresis. Hematoxylin and eosin staining showed admixed neuroendoc.ine and keratinized squamous c.lls. Positive nuc.ear c.X2 expression c.nfirme dintestinal derivation. c.7 and c.20 were *** c.lls stained positively for synaptophysin and AE1/AE3 and negatively for c.romogranin and muc.c.rmine. Hepatic.metastases showed a similar immunohistoc.emic.l profile. Molec.lar analysis revealeda G13D KRAS mutation. BRAF mutational testing wasnegative and mic.osatellite instability was not *** patient had rapid disease progression on c.emotherapy and died 60 d after presentation. Although theG13D KRAS mutation normally predic.s an intermed iateoutc.me,the aggressive tumor behavior suggests other modifying fac.ors in rare types of c.lonic.c.rc.nomas.
