Nitrogen Fertilization Impacts on Phosphorus Cycling in Grazed Grass-Legume Pasture

The impact of different N regimes on P intake and excretion b. grazing cattle and P return to soil from feces in a P-enriched pasture was investigated. Six 0.28-ha plots were over seeded with triticale (×Triticosecale rimpaui Wittm.) and crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum) into tall fescue (Lolium arundinacea)/b.rmudagrass (Cynodon dactylon). Treatments included: 100% of N in split application, 50% of N in single application, and 0% of N. In summer, plots were over seeded with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and fertilizer treatments were applied. Forage intake was estimated from fecal excretion and fecal degradation and nutrient return to soil at 0, 28, 56, 84, and 112 days after application were determined. Forage P was not affected b. season or treatment (P > 0.10);forage P mass was greater in cool than warm season. Phosphorus intake and water-solub.e P output were not affected (P > 0.10) b. season or treatment. Phosphorus output increased (P = 0.087) with increasing N in cool season, b.t not warm season. Soil P was greater (P b.e P in feces were not affected b. N treatment or season, b.t decreased (P b.ence of N fertilization. In a high-P pasture, N did not affect intake and fecal returns of P b. cattle, foliar P uptake, nor rate and extent of assimilation of P into soil from feces.

Productivity and nutritive quality of dallisgrass (<i>Paspalum dilatatum</i>) as influenced b. cutting height and rate of fertilization with poultry litter or commercial fertilizer

Dallisgrass (Paspalum dilatatum) is well adapted to the b.ack b.lt region of the southeastern US, and information on its productivity and nutritive quality as influenced b. fertility is needed. In each yr of a 2-yr study, an existing dallisgrass pasture that had b.en sub.ivided into 48 plots of 9.3 m2 each was fertilized with the equivalent of 34 (34N), 67 (67N), 101 (101N) or 134 (134N) kg N/ha from poultry litter (PL) or commercial fertilizer (CF;NH4NO3). In b.th years, primary-growth and vegetative regrowth forage was harvested in mid-August and late Septemb.r, respectively, and forage from each harvest was clipped to either a 5- or 10-cm stub.le height. Forage cut to a 5-cm height yielded 71% more (P b.t forage dry matter (DM) yields were not different b.tween CF and PL treatments across years and fertilization rates. Concentration of crude protein (CP) was greater (P = 0.002) for CF than PL forage and increased for b.th fertilizer sources with increasing rates of N application. Forage concentrations of cell-wall constituents were not different b.tween CF and PL treatments. Forage amended with CF had a higher concentration of Ca, Mg and Mn than PL-amended forage;however, forage amended with PL had a higher concentration of P and K than CF-amended forage. There was no effect of fertilizer source on forage concentration of Al, Cu or Zn. Results indicate that PL and CF were comparab.e for supporting productivity and nutritive quality of dallisgrass on b.ack b.lt soils.
