Prospects for Improving the Operational Seasonal Prediction of Tropical Cyclone Activity in the Southern Hemisphere

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are the most destructive weather phenomena to impact on tropical regions, and reliable predicttion of TC seasonal activity is important for preparedness of coastal communities in the tropics. In investigating prospects for improving the skill of TC seasonal prediction in the South Indian and South Pacific Oceans, including the Australian Region, we used linear regression to model the relationship between the annual number of cyclones and three indices (SOI, NI?O3.4 and 5VAR) describing the strength of the El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The correlation between the number of Australian Region (90?E - 160?E) TCs and the indices was strong (3-month 5VAR ?0.65, NI?O3.4 ?0.62 and SOI +0.64), and a cross-validation assessment demonstrated that the models which used July-August-September indices and the temporal trend as the predictors performed well. The predicted number of TCs in the Australian Region for 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 seasons was 14 (11 recorded) and 12, respectively. We also found that the correlation between the numbers of TCs in the western South Indian region (30?E to 90?E) and the eastern South Pacific region (east of 170?E) and the indices was weak, and it is therefore not sensible to build linear regression forecast models for these regions. We conclude that for the Australian Region, the new statistical model provides prospects for improvement in forecasting skill compared to the statistical model currently employed at the National Climate Centre, Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The next step towards improving the skill of TC seasonal prediction in the various regions of the Southern Hemisphere will be undertaken through analysis of outputs from the dynamical climate model POAMA (Predictive Ocean-Atmosphere Model for Australia).

We report results on electronic, transport, and bulk properties of rock-salt magnesium selenide (MgSe), from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We utilized a local density approximation (LDA) potential and the linear combination of atomic orbitals formalism (LCAO). We followed the Bagayoko, Zhao, and Williams (BZW) method, as enhanced by Ekuma and Franklin (BZW-EF), to perform a generalized minimization of the energy, down to the actual ground state of the material. We describe the successive, self-consistent calculations, with augmented basis sets, that are needed for this generalized minimization. Due to the generalized minimization, our results have the full, physical content of DFT, as per the second DFT theorem [AIP Advances, 4, 127104 (2014)]. Our calculated, indirect bandgap of 2.49 eV, for a room temperature lattice constant of 5.460 Å, agrees with experimental findings. We present the ground-state band structure, the related total and partial densities of states, DOS and PDOS, respectively, and electron and hole effective masses for the material. Our calculated bulk modulus of 63.1 GPa is in excellent agreement with the experimental value of 62.8 ± 1.6 GPa. Our predicted equilibrium lattice constant, at zero temperature, is 5.424 Å, with a corresponding indirect bandgap of 2.51 eV. We discuss the reasons for the agreements between our findings and available, corresponding, experimental ones, particularly for the band gap, unlike the previous DFT results obtained with ab-initio LDA or GGA potentials.

The amplification of microwaves in n-GaAs films has been widely studied. On the other hand, using nonlinear parametric effects in microwave, millimeter, and THz ranges has a large potential. In this paper the resonant nonlinear phenomena are investigated in active n-GaAs semiconductor and in films on its base. The phenomena are the nonlinear interactions of space charge waves, including the frequency multiplication and mixing, and the three-wave interaction between two THz electromagnetic waves and a single space charge wave. This three-wave interaction results in the superheterodyne amplification of THz waves. The electron velocity in GaAs is the nonlinear function of an external electric field. If the bias electric field is more E0>Ecrit ≈3KV/cm , it is possible to obtain a negative differential mobility (NDM and space charge waves). The space charge waves have phase velocity of electrons equal to v0=v(E0), E0=V0/Lz , where V0 is the voltage, producing the bias electric field E0?in GaAs film. The superheterodyne amplification and the multiplication of microwaves are very promising for building active sensors in telecommunications system, radiometers, and radio telescopes. The superheterodyne mechanism has an advantage related to decreasing noise because of increasing of frequency in the process of amplification. It is used in the process of amplification of longitudinal space charge waves that in turn causes the transfer of energy from longitudinal wave into transverse one with increasing frequency. This is realized due to parametric coupling of two transverse waves and a single space charge wave in GaAs.

Influence of Impurity Doping and γ-Irradiation on the Optical Properties of Layered GaSe Crystals

Presented in this paper are the results of electron-microscopic (SEM, EDS) and low-temperature (Т = 4.5 K) photoluminescence (PL) and absorption investigations of layered GaSe crystals, both non-doped and doped with Zn, Cd and Sn impurities taken in the concentration 0.01 wt%. The crystals were exposed to ?-irradiation with energies 0 to 34 MeV and doses up to 1014 γ/cm2. SEM investigations did not reveal any structural changes at the crystal surface after ?-irradiation with the investigated doses. PL investigations enabled the discovery that doping GaSe crystals with Zn or irradiation of non-doped crystals with ?-quanta results in decreased amounts of intrinsic defects (according to Schottky and Frenkel, respectively) in these crystals. As a consequence, an essential increase in the parameter S0 (the integrated intensity of PL) was observed with increasing doses of ?-irradiation. In contrast, doping with Sn impurities resulted in a sharp drop in S0 that began to increase after irradiation with ?-quanta. It has been shown that ?-irradiation of GaSe crystals doped with Cd results in the appearance of wide bands in the PL and absorption spectra, caused by transitions of carriers between direct and indirect conduction bands and deep acceptor levels, as well as by transitions of the donor-acceptor type. The types of transitions, energies of acceptor levels (25, 70, 150, 310, 460 meV) relative to the top of valence band and the energy of the donor level (165 meV) relative to the bottom of the conduction band, as well as Huang-Rys factors and the energies of lattice phonons taking part in these transitions were determined.

The traditional version of the theory of volume filling of micropores was used for the estimation of the fractal dimension of microporous solids. For this purpose, the Dubinin’s integral equation was solved for infinite and limited integration limits. The results were applied to the adsorption of nitrogen (T = 78 K) on coal samples and Davisil F silica and to the adsorption of water (Т = 293 К) on lunar soil sample and on rice starch.

In this paper, we discuss questions of creating an electronic intellectual analogue of a human being. We introduce a mathematical concept of stimulus generating emotions. We also introduce a definition of logical thinking of robots and a notion of efficiency coefficient to describe their efficiency of rote (mechanical) memorizing. The paper proves theorems describing properties of permanent conflicts between logical and emotional thinking of robots with a nonabsolute rote memory.

Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Refractive Autokeratoplasty: A Pilot Study

Purpose: To develop a new method of femtosecond laser-assisted refractive autokeratoplasty (FRAK) in advanced keratoconus and to evaluate preliminarily early clinical results. Methods: A total of 17 patients with stable advanced keratoconus and a mean age of 33 ± 8.4 years were included in the study. FRAK was performed in all cases with the IntraLase 60 kHz (Abbott Medical Optics Inc.). A 2-step resection of corneal stroma was performed using the femtosecond laser, with the generation of a circular corneal flap with wedge-shaped profile. After flap removal, the corneal wound was sutured. Results: The surgical procedure and early postoperative period were uneventful in all cases. Mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) improved significantly from 0.07 ± 0.03 preoperatively to 0.26 ± 0.13 at 3 months after surgery. Improvement in corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was observed in 94.1% of cases, with 76.5% of eyes showing an improvement of more than 3 lines. Between 3 and 6 months after surgery, an additional improvement was observed in UDVA and CDVA. Corneal cylinder decreased significantly from 9.1 ± 3.8 D preoperatively to 4.4 ± 2.75 D at 6 months postoperatively. Conclusions: FRAK may be an alternative treatment in stable advanced keratoconus, allowing a significant visual improvement and corneal regularization while saving the patient's own corneal tissue. The non-penetrating nature of the surgical technique helps to minimize the risks associated to this type of surgery. Further research is needed to determine the functional long-term outcomes.

设计了一种通过检测生物活性点与皮肤完整区域之间温度差来监测药物疗效并优化心理疾病治疗的系统。该系统通过实时监控服药计量,以及时调整药量,从而提高治疗的有效性。系统采用两电极Foll方法结合中该地形解剖参考点找到生物活性点,通过DS18B20测量温度,利用ATmega 32单片机对温度进行处理并实时显示温度差,进而通过温度差反应药效。本文数据证实了温差指标BAP C7、Gi4与评估心理疾病严重程度的神经尺度之间的相关性。实验结果表明,温度差指标能够作为衡量药效的标准,通过监测温度差可以有效实现心理疾病药效的监测。
