Objective:To investigate the levels of serum Cortisol in patients with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum(***) malaria in an area of unstable malaria transmission in eastern Sudan. Methods:The concentrations of Cortisol were measured in sera of 25 patients with uncomplicated *** malaria(at presentation,24 h and 7 d later) and 25 healthy volunteers using radioimmunoassay gamma ***:There was no significant difference in mean(SD) of total Cortisol levels in patients with malaria in comparison with the control group;602.2(369.6) vs. 449.2(311.7) ng/mL,P=*** patients with uncomplicated *** malaria,the mean(SD) presenting Cortisol levels were significantly higher in comparison to the levels on day 7;602.2 (369.6) vs.373.6(139.1) ng/mL,P=*** the patients with uncomplicated *** malaria (on presentation) Cortisol levels were not correlated with initial temperature or the presenting ***:Thus,Cortisol levels were not significantly different between the patients and the controls.

Multiple comparisons among genomes can clarify their evolution, speciation, and functional innova- tions. To date, the genome sequences of eight grasses representing the most economically important Poaceae （grass） clades have been published, and their genomic-level comparison is an essential foundation for evolutionary, functional, and translational research. Using a formal and conservative approach, we aligned these genomes. Direct comparison of paralogous gene pairs all duplicated simultaneously reveal striking variation in evolutionary rates among whole genomes, with nucleotide substitution slowest in rice and up to 48% faster in other grasses, adding a new dimension to the value of rice as a grass model. We reconstructed ancestral genome contents for major evolutionary nodes, potentially contributing to understanding the divergence and speciation of grasses. Recent fossil evidence suggests revisions of the estimated dates of key evolutionary events, implying that the pan-grass polyploidization occurred ~96 million years ago and could not be related to the Creta- ceous-Tertiary mass extinction as previously inferred. Adjusted dating to reflect both updated fossil evidence and lineage-specific evolutionary rates suggested that maize subgenome divergence and maize-sorghum divergence were virtually simultaneous, a coincidence that would be explained if poly- ploidization directly contributed to speciation. This work lays a solid foundation for Poaceae transla- tional genomics.

Heat-resistant alloys with excellent mechanical properties are widely used in various fields,and further improvement in their properties is essential to meet the requirements in new-generation advanced supercritical boilers,nuclear reactors,superheaters,and other new materials *** effectively enhance the comprehensive performance of heat-resistant alloys,second-phase particle strengthening has been widely studied,and in the face of different service envi-ronments of advanced heat-resistant steels,the selection of suitable second-phase particles is essential to maximize the performance of these *** this end,three major types of reinforcing phases in heat-resistant alloys such as carbides,rare earth oxides,and intermetallic compounds are summarized.A comparative analysis of the precipitation behavior of the reinforcing phases with different types as well as the risks and means of controlling their use in service,is *** parameters for the application of various types of second-phase particles in heat-resistant alloys are provided to support the design and preparation of new ultrahigh-performance heat-resistant alloys.

Two eukaryotic vectors expressing 9 tandem repeats of human MUCI（VNTR）, VR1012-VNTR, and pEgFP-VNTR, were constructed by cloning VNTR gene into VR1012 and pEgFP, respectively. VNTR stably expressing murine Lewis lung carcinoma（LLC） cell line（VNTR^＋ LLC） was established by Lipofectamine-mediated transfection of pEgFP-VNTR into LLC cells. The EgFP expression was observed under a fluorescent microscope and VNTR expression in VNTR^＋ LLC cells was confirmed by means of Western blotting. A syngenic graft tumor model was generated by subcutaneous injection of VNTR^＋ LLC cells into C57/BL6 mice and tumor size increased rapidly with time and in a cell qumber dependent manner. VNTR mRNA expression in the tumor formed was confirmed by RT-PCR. After the third immunization mice were challenged subcutaneously with 5×10^5 VNTR^＋ LLC cells, a significant reduction of subcutaneous tumor growth was observed in the groups immunized with VNTR plasmid DNA compared with that in the groups immunized with the vector DNA alone. Thus, the suppression of subcutaneous tumor was antigen-specific. This model is useful for the development of tumor vaccines targeting MUCI VNTRs.

A local-scale phase-resolving wave transformation model with CgwaVE is established in connection with a regional-scale coupled STwaVE-ADCIRC wave-current model for its application in the Half Moon Bay, grays *** transformation from offshore to the harbor entrance is simulated by the STwaVE model which includes wave-current *** STwaVE results provide incident wave conditions for the local-scale CgwaVE model at its outer boundary. A simple method is developed to take into account the lateral variation of wave height in constructing the model’s wave boundary *** model was validated for three wave condition cases which yielded good agreement with field *** validated model was applied to predicting nearshore waves in the Half Moon Bay and longshore transport parameters along the wave breaking line for the existing condition and three engineering alternatives. A comparative analysis indicated that storm waves that have a combination of long period and large height are the most destructive to the crenulate shoreline in the Half Moon Bay; both 152 m jetty extension (Alt. 2) and diffraction mound enlargement (Alt. 3) would significantly reduce breaking wave height and longshore transport potential in the southwest corner of Half Moon Bay.

Arsenic(As) contamination in soils has posed a severe threat to safe crop production. The previous studies showed the antagonism between phosphorus(P) and As in plant growth and As uptake, while the mechanisms of alleviating As toxicity by P is not completely clear. Due to the limiting P condition, it is imperative to understand how low P addition can be used to suppress arsenate As(V) uptake and the subsequent mechanisms involved. Thus in this study we investigated the effect of P addition on As uptake, anti-oxidative enzyme activity, and anti-oxidant content, and the relative expression of transport, defense, and detoxification genes using two barley genotypes differing in As toxicity tolerance. P addition significantly reduced As concentration in plant tissues, and caused the great changes in activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase, glutathione content, and the relative expression of examined genes when the plants of the two barley genotypes were exposed to 100 μmol L^(–1) As, with ZDB160(As-tolerant) being much more affected than ZDB475(As-sensitive). The current results show that P addition can alleviate As toxicity by regulating the expression of As transport, defense, and detoxification genes to a greater extent in As tolerance of barley, suggesting the possibility of controlling As uptake and toxicity by applying low amount of P fertilizers in the As-contaminated soils.

A filter algorithm based on cochlear mechanics and neuron filter mechanism is proposed from the view point of *** helps to solve the problem that the non-linear amplification is rarely considered in studying the auditory filters.A cochlear mechanical transduction model is built to illustrate the audio signals processing procedure in cochlea,and then the neuron filter mechanism is modeled to indirectly obtain the outputs with the cochlear properties of frequency tuning and non-linear *** mathematic description of the proposed algorithm is derived by the two *** parameter space,the parameter selection rules and the error correction of the proposed algorithm are *** unit impulse responses in the time domain and the frequency domain are simulated and compared to probe into the characteristics of the proposed *** a 24-channel filter bank is built based on the proposed algorithm and applied to the enhancements of the audio *** experiments and comparisons verify that,the proposed algorithm can effectively divide the audio signals into different frequencies,significantly enhance the high frequency parts,and provide positive impacts on the performance of speech enhancement in different noise environments,especially for the babble noise and the volvo noise.

Background Intra-cerebral hemorrhage （ICH） is a devastating complication that can result from superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery （STA-MCA） bypass in patients undergoing treatment for steno-occlusive cerebrovascular disease （CVD）.There is a clinical need to find the possible risk factors to prevent ICH,as it is a significant cause of mortality and *** aim of the study was to investigate the factors associated with delayed ICH after STA-MCA bypass in patients with steno-occlusive *** We retrospectively analyzed the records of 163 patients seen from 2002 to 2011 with STA-MCA bypass for steno-occlusive cerebrovascular diseases at the Department of Neurosurgery,Xuan Wu Hospital,*** and clinical data,including age,gender,vascular risk factors,preoperative syndrome,preoperative National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale （NIHSS）,ipsilateral ischemic lesions,classification of steno-occlusive CVDs,donor branches of STA,graft patency,postoperative hypertension,and postoperative-increased MCA velocity were recorded and *** Logistic regression served to identify factors associated with delayed ICH after STA-MCA *** We identified 8 （4.9%） patients with delayed ICH after STA-MCA *** with hypertension,preoperative stroke,ipsilateral ischemic lesions,postoperative hypertension and postoperative-increased MCA velocity were significantly more prone to experiencing delayed ICH after STA-MCA *** regression analysis shows ipsilateral ischemic lesions,postoperative hypertension,and postoperative-increased MCA velocity remained independent predictors for delayed ICH after STA-MCA *** Despite the varied associated factors in patients with steno-occlusive CVDs,ipsilateral ischemic lesions,postoperative hypertension,and postoperative-increased MCA velocity could be associated with delayed ICH after STAMCA bypass.
