Congenital radio-ulnar synostosis (CRUS) is a rare skeletal malformation of the upper limb and the most common congenital functional disorder of the elbow joint, causing limitation in forearm rotational movements, which may lead to difficulties with some activities of daily living. We reported a 4-year-old girl with congenital bilateral proximal radio-ulnar synostosis who presented with functional discomfort due to limitation of the prono-supination movements of the forearms and abnormal gestures when handling objects. She has clinical and radiological features of congenital radio-ulnar synostosis (CRUS). However, the parents declined corrective surgery because of wrong perception of the condition to be normal. This case highlighted the poor health seeking behavior and wrong illness perception prevalent in the developing countries.

Set of integers, Zn is split into even-odd parts. The even part is arranged in ways, while the odd part fixes one point at a time to compliment the even part thereby forming the semigroup, AZn. Thus, -spaces are filled choosing maximum of two even points at a time. Green’s relations have formed important structures that enhance the algebraic study of transformation semigroups. The semigroup of Alternating Nonnegative Integers for n-even (AZn-even) is shown to have only two D-classes, and there are -classes for n≥4. The cardinality of L-classes is constant. Certain cardinalities and some other properties were derived. The coefficients of the zigzag triples obtained are 1, and . The second and third coefficients can be obtained by zigzag addition.

Objective:The quantitative effects of formulation and processing variables affecting the binding properties of Chinese yam starch（Dioscorea oppositifolia） in chloroquine phosphate tablet formulations have been investigated in comparison with corn starch using a 23 factorial experimental design.Methods:Chinese yam starch,representing the "low" level,and corn starch,representing the "high" level were used as binders at concentrations of 2.5%w/w and 10%w/w in chloroquine phosphate tablet formulations.The mechanical properties of the tablets,measured by the tensile strength（T） and brittle fracture index（BFI） as well as the release properties measured by the disintegration time（DT） and dissolution time(t80- time for 80%drug release),were used as assessment parameters.Results:The ranking of the individual coefficient values for the formulations on T was D > N >>C,on BFI was N > D >>C,on DT was D > N > C and on t80 was C > N > D while the ranking of the interaction coefficient on T was N-D > C-D >> N-C,on BFI was N-D > N-C = C-D,on DT and t80 was N-C > N-D > C-D.Changing the binding agent from Chinese to corn starch,led to a decrease in T,DT and t80 but increase in BFI of the tablets.There were significant（P < 0.001 ） interactions between the nature of binder,N and the other two variables,C and D.Conclusion:The result showed that Chinese yam possessed stronger binding capacity than corn starch and could be useful as an alternative binder when tablets with high mechanical strength with minimal problems of lamination,and slow release are required.

High level infant mortality rates and onset of drug resistance has led into the possible development of indigenous probiotics as alternative bacteriotherapy in the control of infantile bacterial diarrhoea.This study was to determine the in vitro inhibitory potential of four probiotic candidates obtained from Nigerian indigenous fermented foods and beverages and from faecal specimens of healthy infants on infantile Gram-positive diarrhogenic bacterial pathogens.Potential probiotic candidates,AAOOL4,L.reuteri AAOOCH1,L.plantarum AA0025NN and L.delbrueckii AAOOT20 were assayed for in vitro bactericidal effects on diarrhogenic bacterial test strains-Bacillus cereus 25S,B.cereus 32S,B.licheniformis 26S and B.licheniformis 39S.All the test strains inoculated into an industrial infant weaning food already seeded with the probiotic strains were significantly inhibited within 96 hours.L.acidophilus AAOOL4,L.reuteri AAOOCH1,L.plantarum AAOO25NN and L.delbrueckii AAOOT20 had in vitro bactericidal effects on bacteri isolates implicated in infantile diarrhoea,indicating the probiotic potential of the candidates.

Diabetes knowledge and self-care practices among people living with type 2 diabetes mellitus in a diabetes clinic in Southwestern Nigeria

Objective:The objective of this study is to assess the knowledge and self-care practices of people living with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Materials and Methods:The study was conducted in a clinic in Southwestern Nigeria.It adopted a cross-sectional design.The sample consists of 107 people living with T2DM.Data were collected using Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire and Revised Self-care Inventory Scale.Results:The mean diabetes knowledge of the participants was 16.2±3.0 and 70.1%had inadequate knowledge of T2DM.The mean diabetes self-care practice score among the participants was 49.9±4.9,and 89.7%reported poor diabetes self-care practice.There is no significant difference in the knowledge of diabetes between male(16.42±3.42)and female(16.12±2.8)participants(t=0.45;P=0.65),and no significant difference in self-care practice of male(49.23±4.51)and female(50.06±5.07)participants(t=0.75,P=0.46).In addition,there is no correlation between age and knowledge of diabetes(r=-0.18,P=0.07)and self-care practices(r=0.08,P=0.38)of participants.No significant relationship was found between knowledge of diabetes and diabetes selfcare practices(χ^(2)=1.605,P=0.448)Conclusion:Knowledge of diabetes and self-care practices of people living with T2DM in this study were poor.Effort should be directed at improving their diabetes knowledge and self-care practices.

Objective:To evaluate the in vitro inhibitory potential of commonly available antibiotic(discs) and paediatric suspensions against bacterial species from polio-positive faecal specimens.Methods:Commonly available antibiotic (discs) and oral,paediatric suspensions were screened for in vitro inhibitory activities against bacterial species from infantile polio-positive faecal specimens,using agar disc-diffusion and modified agar well-diffusion methods.Results:Isolated bacteria were Bacillus cereus,B.subtilis,Staphylococcus aureus,Streptococcus pneumoniae,Aeromonas hydrophila,Citrobacter aerogenes,Escherichia coli,Enterobacter aerogenes,Klebsiella pneumoniae,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Proteus mirabilis,Pr.vulgaris,Shigella dysenteriae,Sh.flexneri,Sh. sonnei and Vibrio parahaemolyticus.Overall phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility rates among Gram-positive bacterial species were between 33.3%(augmentin) and 75.0%(chloramphenicol,erythromycin and gentamicin); higher susceptibility rates(48.6%-100.0%) were recorded among Gram-negative bacterial species, while between7.8%/ 10.1%(metronidazole / ampicillin) and 25.2%/28.1%(cotrimoxazole / septrin) were recorded towards paediatric antibiotics.Conclusions:Bacterial species from polio-positive fecal specimens are minimally susceptible to commonly available oral paediatric antibiotic suspensions in Nigeria.

This study investigates the aftermath of a significant train derailment and vinyl chloride release incident in East Palestine, Ohio, with a particular focus on the analysis of precipitation acidity changes and the concentration of vinyl chloride in samples. The research seeks to elucidate the complex relationship between industrial accidents, atmospheric chemistry, and their potential implications for human health and the environment. Through meticulous examination of variations in precipitation acidity patterns, this study provides valuable insights into the dispersion and impact of toxic agents in the environment following industrial mishaps. The results underscore the intricate interplay between these factors, highlighting the need for a multidisciplinary approach that bridges the realms of environmental science and biomedical concerns. This research contributes to a growing body of knowledge that addresses the broader consequences of industrial incidents on public health. It underscores the importance of proactive measures, such as enhanced monitoring and surveillance, risk assessment, public education, and regulatory reform, to mitigate the environmental and health risks associated with industrial activities involving hazardous materials.
