Insights into the Impact of Bifidobacterium bifidum， B. breve， and B. longum on the Immune Response Against Salmonella Infection in Neonatal Rats

Infants exhibit diminished susceptibility to external infections， a phenomenon closely linked to the pervasive presence of the bifidobacterial community within their intestinal tract. Nonetheless， a significant knowledge gap remains concerning the distinct species of bifidobacteria initiating anti-infection immune responses during the early developmental stages. In this study， the impact of early intervention with Bifidobacterium bifidum (B. bifidum)， B. breve， and B. longum on neonatal rats infected with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. typhimurium) SL1344 were compared. The study encompasses various immunity levels， including gut immunity， central immunity (thymus)， peripheral immunity (spleen)， and brain immunity. Following Salmonella infection， significant alterations in neonatal rats were observed in growth and developmental levels， immune markers， cytokine levels， balance of T lymphocyte subpopulations， intestinal barrier function， and blood-brain barrier integrity. Compared with B. breve and B. longum， B. bifidum demonstrated more pronounced efficacy in regulating these physiological processes. By conducting multi-level analyses of gut microbiota， bifidobacterial community， colonic content metabolomics， and serum metabolomics， the significance of B. bifidum's role is underscored， and the immune-enhancing function of messenger metabolites is unveiled. Among these metabolites， γ-L-Glutamyl-L-glutamic acid and Orotic acid were found to be shared by all three species， while Hippuric acid and 1a，1b-dihomo Prostaglandin F2α were unique to B. bifidum， and DL-Arginine was specific to B. longum. Overall， this study has provided novel insights into the intervention and immunomodulation by Bifidobacterium in early-life infections， emphasizing the significant role of B. bifidum.

The damage models based on the eight-chain model and the affine full-chain network model are not adequate to describe the damage behaviors in double-network(DN)hydrogels.To overcome this limitation,we propose a combined chain stretch model with new damage flow rules.It is demonstrated that the new proposed micro-chain stretch is a reduced form of the complete representation for the transversely isotropic tensor function.As a result,the damage models based on the eight-chain model and the affine model are incorporated as special cases.The effects of chain affineness and network entangling are simultaneously involved in the new model,while only one of these two effects can be characterized in either the eight-chain model or the affine model.It is further shown that the new model can effectively capture the Mullins features of the DN hydrogels and achieve better agreement with the experimental data than the affine model and the eight-chain model.

BACKGROUND Cancer patients often suffer from severe stress reactions psychologically,such as anxiety and depression.Prostate cancer(PC)is one of the common cancer types,with most patients diagnosed at advanced stages that cannot be treated by radical surgery and which are accompanied by complications such as bodily pain and bone metastasis.Therefore,attention should be given to the mental health status of PC patients as well as physical adverse events in the course of clinical treatment.AIM To analyze the risk factors leading to anxiety and depression in PC patients after castration and build a risk prediction model.METHODS A retrospective analysis was performed on the data of 120 PC cases treated in Xi'an People's Hospital between January 2019 and January 2022.The patient cohort was divided into a training group(n=84)and a validation group(n=36)at a ratio of 7:3.The patients’anxiety symptoms and depression levels were assessed 2 wk after surgery with the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS)and the Selfrating Depression Scale(SDS),respectively.Logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors affecting negative mood,and a risk prediction model was constructed.RESULTS In the training group,35 patients and 37 patients had an SAS score and an SDS score greater than or equal to 50,respectively.Based on the scores,we further subclassified patients into two groups:a bad mood group(n=35)and an emotional stability group(n=49).Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that marital status,castration scheme,and postoperative Visual Analogue Scale(VAS)score were independent risk factors affecting a patient's bad mood(P<0.05).In the training and validation groups,patients with adverse emotions exhibited significantly higher risk scores than emotionally stable patients(P<0.0001).The area under the curve(AUC)of the risk prediction model for predicting bad mood in the training group was 0.743,the specificity was 70.96%,and the sensitivity was 66.03%,while in the validation group,the AUC,specificity,and sensitivity were 0

Developing efficient electrocatalysts for converting dinitrogen to ammonia through electrocatalysis is of significance to the decentralized ammonia production. Here, through high-throughput density functional theory calculations, we demonstrated that the interfacial modulation of hexagonal boron nitride/graphene(hBN-graphene) could sufficiently improve the catalytic activity of the single transition metal atom catalysts for nitrogen reduction reaction(NRR). It was revealed that Re@hBN-graphene and Os@hBN-graphene possessed remarkable NRR catalytic activity with low limiting potentials of 0.29 V and 0.33 V, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanism of the enhanced catalytic activity was investigated based on various descriptors of the adsorption energies of intermediates, where the synergistic effect of hBN and graphene in the hybrid substrate was found to play a key role. Motivated by the synergistic effect of hybrid substrate in single-atom catalysts, a novel strategy was proposed to efficiently design dual-atom catalysts by integrating the merits of both metal components. The as-designed dual-atom catalyst Fe-Mo@hBN exhibited more excellent NRR catalytic performance with a limiting potential of 0.17 V, manifesting the solidity of the design strategy. Our findings open new avenues for the search of heterostructure substrates for single-atom catalysts and the efficient design of dualatom catalysts for NRR.

Understanding the relationship between dimensionality and superconductivity has attracted substantial research interest.In this work,we report the effective modulation of superconductivity in GeP_(5)through dimensionality.The superconducting phase transition temperature improves by~10%as the thickness of GeP_(5)decreases from bulk to~96 nm,behaving as a unique negative relationship between the superconducting phase transition temperatureand thickness.

As industrialization accelerates and the amount of hazardous waste generated gradually increases,the means of disposal of hazardous waste is of increasing concern.In this paper,a 40 t/d counter-fow rotary kiln incineration system owned by a Jiangsu environmental protection company was researched.The software Aspen Plus was used to build the mixed pyrolysis model and the software Fluent was used to build the computational fuid dynamics model of the incineration system.The infuence of the calorifc value of the hazardous waste,the operating temperature and the air supply on the operational efectiveness of the incineration system were analyzed by varying the simulation conditions.The results show that the SO_(x)and NO_(x)content of the product is lower when the operating temperature is above 800℃.The incineration system could only operate above 800℃when the calorifc value of the hazardous waste is not less than 1500 kcal/kg.The incineration system operated best at a primary air velocity of 1.5 m/s.The simulation results in this paper serve as a guide for the operation of counter-fow rotary kiln incineration systems.

A new perspective on polyethylene-promoted lignin pyrolysis with mass transfer and radical explanation

Co-pyrolysis of lignin and waste plastics,for example polyethylene(PE),has been studied,but related reports are basically on condition optimizations.This study revealed a new perspective on PE-promoted lignin pyrolysis to phenolic monomers with mass transfer and radical explanation.Lignin and PE were first pyrolyzed individually to identify pyrolysis characteristics,pyrolytic products,as well as the suitable copyrolysis temperature.Then,co-pyrolysis of blended lignin/PE with various ratios was investigated.Yields of lignin products reached the maximum under lignin/PE ratio of 1:1,but blended approach always inhibited the production of lignin phenols.This resulted from the poor mass transfer and interactions between lignin and PE,in which PE pyrolysates could easily escape from the particle gaps.While in layered approach,PE pyrolysates had to pass through the lignin layer which contributed to the good interactions with lignin pyrolysis intermediates,thus the yields of lignin-derived products were significantly improved.Interactions between lignin and PE(or their pyrolysates)were mainly radical quenching reactions,and X-ray photoelectron spectrum(XPS)and electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR)of pyrolytic chars were conducted to verify these interactions controlled by mass transfer.The percentage of C]C(sp^(2))and concentration of organic stable radicals in layered lignin/PE char were both the lowest compared with those in blended lignin/PE and lignin char,indicating the stabilization of lignin-derived radicals by PE pyrolysates.Moreover,the spin concentration of radicals in the char from layered char/PE was lower than that in lignin char,which further affirmed the quenching of radicals by PE in the layered co-pyrolysis mode.

Rice husk-based activated carbon was prepared with the help of zinc chloride using microwave and electrical dual-mode heating.The pore characteristics and chemical properties of rice husk-based activated carbon(RH-AC)were characterized by BET,XRD,Raman spectra,FTIR and pHIEP(pH of isoelectric point).The specific surface area of RH-AC is 1719.32 m^(2)/g with a total pore volume of 1.05 cm^(3)/g.The performance of RH-AC for removing Cr(VI)from aqueous solution was examined considering the variation of the contact time(0-120 min),pH value(2.0-9.0),adsorbent dose(0.5-3.0 g/L),initial concentration(28-145 mg/L)and solvent temperature(15-45℃).The ideal pH for Cr(VI)removal is between 2.0 and 3.0 with the equilibrium time of 90 min,achieving the maximum adsorption capacity of 56.82 mg/g with the pH of 3.0.Comparable study on the established kinetic models and isotherms to simulate the removal of Cr(VI)by RH-AC was carried out to sort out the inherent mechanism of the absorption.Reasonable agreements could be obtained by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir,Freundlich and Tempkin isothermal models.Results from Body model simulation suggest that external mass transfer was the essential cause for rate-controlling in the adsorption process of Cr(VI).
