Long-term monitoring of cycles in Clethrionomys rutilus in the Yukon boreal forest

Baseline studies of small rodent populations in undisturbed ecosystems are *** report here 50 years of mon-itoring and experimentation in Yukon of a dominant rodent species in the North American boreal forest,the red-backed vole Clethrionomys *** voles breed in summer,weigh 20–25 g,and reach a maximum density of 20 to 25 per *** populations have shown consistent 3–4-year cycles for the last 50 years with the only change being that peak densities averaged 8/ha until 2000 and 18/ha since that *** the last 25 years,we have measured food resources,predator numbers,and winter weather,and for 1-year social interactions,to estimate their contribution to changes in the rate of summer increase and the rate of overwinter *** these potential limiting factors could contribute to changes in density,and we measured their relative contributions statistically with multiple *** rate of winter decline in density was related to both food supply and winter *** rate of summer increase was related to summer berry crops and white spruce cone *** measure of predator numbers was related to winter or summer changes in vole *** was a large signal of climate change effects in these *** is no density dependence in summer population growth and only a weak one in winter population *** of our results provide a clear understanding of what generates 3–4-year cycles in these voles,and the major missing piece may be an understanding of social interactions at high density.

Productivity constraints on Citron-crested Cockatoos in a rich community of large hole-nesting birds

Knowledge of breeding success and its limiting factors is crucial in assessing species’conservation *** cavity-nesters,parrots are particularly influenced by the availability of suitable cavities and low breeding output,whether due to natural processes or *** the island of Sumba,Indonesia,the Critically Endangered Citron-crested Cockatoo(Cacatua citrinocristata)has the added problem of co-existing with an unusually rich hole-nesting bird community in a forested environment much constrained by habitat *** monitored 95 nesting cavities of cockatoos and their competitors and potential nest-predators,over one to four breeding seasons,using a combination of camera-traps,direct checks on nest contents,and observations from the *** for suitable cavities was intense among three large parrot species,two owls and a *** rates by potential competitors were higher at unoccupied cavities than at those containing active nests,reflecting the guarding behaviour of the *** Endangered Sumba Hornbill(Rhyticeros everetti)dominated observed direct confrontations and was the most frequent visitor to active parrot nests,suggesting a further role as a potential *** prospected many cavities but rarely then attempted to nest:instead the sites were usually occupied by other cavity-nesters,or by *** the few cavities where cockatoos did breed,predation pressure was likely low,and observed success rate high(10 successful of 15 nests),although the low number of nests found early in the breeding cycle suggests that some may have failed before *** competition for cavities suggests a shortage of suitable nest-sites,the need for preservation of old hole-bearing trees and a role for ***,known,safe artificial nest-sites would also provide opportunities to assess the scale of nest-site shortage,allow camera placements to study productivity,exclude some competitors and predators,and prevent ill

Contemporary biomechanical theory of traumatic brain injury has its foundation in Holbourn’s thesis on shear strain and Ommaya’s primate experimentation demonstrating the role of rotation in a variety of lesions including subdural hematoma(SDH)and diffuse axonal *** human observations have since confirmed,for the most part,the early *** concerns regarding primate research,however,have prompted in vitro models,which in turn has led to challenges with respect to the correlation between in vitro observations and the clinical *** these challenges,medicolegal proceedings may call upon biomechanical engineers to reconstruct complex injury scenarios and offer opinions on the scientific plausibility of clinical disease states,such as SDH,hemorrhagic retinopathy,and cerebral edema,associated with hypothetical or proffered action sequences during the course of an unwitnessed *** is important to note,however,that in vitro models by their nature are low‑evidence quality studies that attempt to advance hypotheses but do not address cause and *** a whole,biomechanical models,as they pertain specifically to the brain and spine,are mathematically ***,endpoints of limited relevance are relied upon(e.g.,skull fracture thresholds),which predictably overestimate the in vivo risk of significant *** the increasing role of biomechanical engineering in the interpretation of fatal pediatric head trauma,a heightened awareness of the limitations warranted.

An enhanced chemopreventive effect of methyl donor S-adenosylmethionine in combination with 25-hydroxyvitamin D in blocking mammary tumor growth and metastasis

Therapeutic targeting of metastatic breast cancer still remains a challenge as the tumor cells are highly heterogenous and exploit multiple pathways for their growth and metastatic spread that cannot always be targeted by a single-agent monotherapy ***,a rational approach through simultaneous targeting of several pathways may provide a better anti-cancer therapeutic effect We tested this hypothesis using a combination of two nutraceutical agents S-adenosylmethionine(SAM)and Vitamin D(Vit.D)prohormone[25-hydroxyvitamin D;/25(OH)D,]that are individually known to exert distinct changes in the expression of genes involved in tumor growth and *** results show that both SAM and 25(OH)D monotherapy significantly reduced proliferation and clonogenic survival of a panel of breast cancer cell lines in vitro and inhibited tumor growth,lung metastasis,and breast tumor cell colonization to the skeleton in ***,these effects were significantly more pronounced in the combination ***-Sequencing revealed that the transcriptomic footprint on key cancer-related signaling pathways is broader in the combination setting than any of the ***,comparison of the differentially expressed genes from our transcriptome analyses with publicly available cancer-related dataset demonstrated that the combination treatment upregulates genes from immune-related pathways that are otherwise downregulated in bone metastasis in *** SAM and Vit.D are both approved nutraceuticals with known safety profiles,this combination treatment may serve as a novel strategy to reduce breast cancer-associated morbidity and mortality。

Impact of climate change on the small mammal community of the Yukon boreal forest

Long-term monitoring is critical to determine the stability and sustainability of wildlife populations,and if change has occurred,*** have followed population density changes in the small mammal community in the boreal forest of the southern Yukon for 46 years with density estimates by live trapping on 3-5 unmanipulated grids in spring and *** community consists of 10 species and was responsible for 9%of the energy flow in the herbivore component of this ecosystem from 1986 to 1996,but this increased to 38%from 2003 to *** mammals,although small in size,are large in the transfer of energy from plants to predators and *** species form the bulk of the *** was a shift in the dominant species from the 1970s to the 2000s,with Myodes rutilus increasing in relative abundance by 22%and Peromyscus maniculatus decreasing by 22%.From 2007 to 2018,Myodes comprised 63%of the catch,Peromyscus 20%,and Microtus species 17%.Possible causes of these changes involve climate change,which is increasing primary production in this boreal forest,and an associated increase in the abundance of 3 rodent predators,marten(Martes americana),ermine(Mustela ermine)and coyotes(Canis latrans).Following and understanding these and potential future changes will require long-term monitoring studies on a large scale to measure metapopulation *** small mammal community in northern Canada is being affected by climate change and cannot remain sta*** will be critically dependent on food-web interactions that are species-specific.

The past 50 years has seen a heightened awareness of abusive injury patterns and increased concern for the plight of children victimized by their *** of the young,however,has been embedded in society since the beginning of recorded ***,nature provides abundant examples of infanticide in lower animals,raising the question of whether exploitation,apathy,and violence toward children are on some level evolutionarily *** human antiquity,selective killing of females,the illegitimate,and the malformed,killing by ritualistic sacrifice or to conserve resources was carried out with *** middle ages and later saw a decline in these practices albeit *** hundred years into the industrial revolution,with harsh child labor in public view,legal remedies were sought to protect children but with little *** domestic abuse of children was not addressed until a pivotal 19^(th)-century case,in which the rights of animals were invoked to intervene on behalf of a *** the 20th century,physicians began to look closely at anatomical findings;patterns due to trauma,especially inflicted trauma,began to emerge.“Battered child syndrome”was followed by“shaken baby syndrome”,the latter prompted by the recurrent findings of subdural hematoma,retinal hemorrhages,and brain injury with the absence of impact injuries and no plausible accidental or natural disease *** the 21st century,high-quality studies and an emphasis on evidenced-based medicine substantiated the existence ofiiijury patterns resulting from homicidal ***,progress has been uneven.A case of child abuse that reached the US Supreme Court resulted in an ill-cited dissent that seems to have amplified an already toxic medicolegal environment,perhaps *** difficulties in balancing the welfare of society with that of caregivers in the aftermath of homicidal abuse will no doubt continue.

Community and ecosystem changes are happening in the pristine boreal forest ecosystem of the Yukon for 2 ***,climate change is affecting the abiotic environment(temperature,rainfall and growing season)and driving changes in plant productivity and predator-prey ***,simultaneously change is occurring because of mammal species reintroductions and *** key ecological question is the impact these faunal changes will have on trophic *** productivity in the boreal forest is increasing because of climatic warming,but plant species composition is unlikely to change significantly during the next 50-100 *** 9-10-year population cycle of snowshoe hares will persist but could be reduced in amplitude if winter weather increases predator hunting *** rodents have increased in abundance because of increased vegetation *** ground squirrels have disappeared from the forest because of increased predator hunting efficiency associated with shrub *** have occurred for 2 reasons:human reintroductions of large ungulates and natural recolonization of mammals and birds extending their geographic *** deliberate rewilding of wood bison(Bison bison)and elk(Cervus canadensis)has changed the trophic structure of this boreal ecosystem very *** natural range expansion of mountain lions(Puma concolor),mule deer(Odocoileus hemionus)and American marten(Martes americana)should have few ecosystem *** potential changes will require long-term monitoring studies and experiments on a scale we rarely deem *** affected by climate change,species reintroductions and human alteration of habitats cannot remain stable and changes will be critically dependent on food web interactions.

uPAR antibody(huATN-658) and Zometa reduce breast cancer growth and skeletal lesions

Urokinase plasminogen activator receptor(uPAR) is implicated in tumor growth and metastasis due to its ability to activate latent growth factors, proteases, and different oncogenic signaling pathways upon binding to different ligands. Elevated u PAR expression is correlated with the increased aggressiveness of cancer cells, which led to its credentialing as an attractive diagnostic and therapeutic target in advanced solid cancer. Here, we examine the antitumor effects of a humanized anti-u PAR antibody(huATN-658) alone and in combination with the approved bisphosphonate Zometa(Zoledronic acid) on skeletal lesion through a series of studies in vitro and in vivo. Treatment with huATN-658 or Zometa alone significantly decreased human MDA-MB-231 cell proliferation and invasion in vitro, effects which were more pronounced when huATN-658 was combined with Zometa. In vivo studies demonstrated that huATN-658 treatment significantly reduced MDA-MB-231 primary tumor growth compared with controls. In a model of breast tumor-induced bone disease, huATN-658 and Zometa were equally effective in reducing skeletal lesions. The skeletal lesions were significantly reduced in animals receiving the combination of huATN-658 + Zometa compared with monotherapy treatment. These effects were due to a significant decrease in osteoclastic activity and tumor cell proliferation in the combination treatment group. Transcriptome analysis revealed that combination treatment significantly changes the expression of genes from signaling pathways implicated in tumor progression and bone remodeling. Results from these studies provide a rationale for the continued development of huATN-658 as a monotherapy and in combination with currently approved agents such as Zometa in patients with metastatic breast cancer.

为了研究张拉整体基本单元的稳定构型条件,本文用张拉整体基本单元几何参数,杆构件数目p,连接同一节点的杆、斜索的另一端节点序号差j,描述稳定构型中节点位置。分析节点力平衡,获得基本单元稳定构型条件。进一步探讨连接于同一节点的杆、斜索的另一端2个节点处于不同位置时,构件空间几何位置与p、j的关系,获得基本单元稳定构型统一条件。分析获得稳定构型的条件只由杆数目p及连接同一节点的杆、斜索的另一端节点序号差j决定,并计算出稳定构型构件空间位置参数之间的函数关系。
