Performances of local poultry breed fed black soldier fly larvae reared on horse manure

In poultry,feed based on maggots,like larvae of black soldier fly(Hermetia illucens) is an attractive option to substitute current ingredients which are expensive and often in direct or indirect competition with human food.Little information is currently available on the utility of these larvae in poultry feed,so goals of this study were to determine whether larvae could be reared on horse manure under traditional farming conditions and to evaluate the growth performances of a local poultry fed these larvae and the fatty acids profiles of their meat.After freezing and thawing,larvae were introduced in the feed of Ardennaise chickens between 30 and 80 days of age.Birds in the control group received a commercial standard feed,while those in the treatment group received the same commercial feed in which 8% was substituted with whole fresh larvae corresponding to 2% on a dry matter basis.Means ± standard errors of larval length and weight were 20.67 ± 2.21 mm and 0.14 ± 0.02 g,respectively.Mean larval percentages of dry matter and of substances extractable in diethyl ether were 24.6% and 23.1%,respectively.Larval fatty acids profiles were predominantly composed of lauric acid(28.1%) and palmitic acid(22.0%).Least squares means of weekly weights of chicken,adjusted for the effects of sex,replication and initial weights,were significantly higher(P control chickens.All other measurements were not statistically different between larvae-fed and control chicken,including fatty acid profiles,protein content and w6/w3 ratio.

characterizing Thermal Augmentation of convection-Enhanced Drug Delivery with the Fiberoptic Microneedle Device

convection-enhanced delivery(cED) is a promis ing technique leveraging pressure-driven flow to increase penetration of infused drugs into interstitial spaces. We have developed a fiberoptic microneedle device for inducing local sub-lethal hyperthermia to further improve cED drug distribution volumes, and this study seeks to quantitatively characterize this approach in agarose tissue phantoms. Infusions of dye were conducted in 0.6%(w/w) agarose tissue phantoms with isothermal conditions at 15 °c, 20 °c, 25 °c, and 30 °c. Infusion metrics were quantifled using a custom shadowgraphy setup and imageprocessing algorithm. These data were used to build an empirical predictive temporal model of distribution volume as a function of phantom temperature. A second set of proof of-concept experiments was conducted to evaluate a novel fiberoptic device capable of generating local photothermal heating during fluid infusion. The isothermal infusions showed a positive correlation between temperature and distribution volume, with the volume at 30 °c showing a 7-fold increase at 100 min over the 15 °c isothermal case. Infusions during photothermal heating(1064 nm at 500 mW) showed a similar eff ect with a 3.5-fold increase at 4 h over the control(0 mW). These results and analyses serve to provide insight into and characterization of heat-mediated enhancement of volumetric dispersal.

Development of a Fast and Facile Analytical Approach to Quantify Radiometabolites in Human Plasma Samples Using Ultra High Performance Liquid chromatography

Introduction: conventional metabolite analyses often require manual sample preparation, generating variability of measurements. This study describes a new method to quantify radiometabolites in blood, combining ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLc) and turbulent flow chromatography, an alternative fully automated process allowing analyte’s extraction. Methods: A new radiotracer for dopamine transporter imaging, namely LBT-999, was used to demonstrate the method’s robustness. Matrix effect, Turboflow column loading, linearity, specificity and precision were evaluated with in vitro samples of LBT-999 in human plasma. Radiodetector sensitivity and preliminary evaluation were respectively determined by analysis of calibrated samples of [18F]LBT-999 and blood samples from 4 healthy subjects injected with [18F]LBT-999, withdrawn at 5, 15, 30 and 45 min pi. Results: With three sequential loadings (3 × 100 μL) of the Turboflow column, mean coefficients of variation were 1%, below 2%, 2% and 30.9% for matrix effect, specificity, repeatability and intermediate precision, respectively. correlation coefficients for linearity were superior to 0.97. Limits of detection and quantification of the radiodetector were fixed at 3 and 9 c/s. Retention times for [18F]LBT-999 and the two radiometabolites detected by radio-UHPLc were 6.5, 4.8 and 9.6 min. Forty-five min after the injection, parent fraction was still predominant with 57.8% ± 25% of the total radioactivity. conclusions: An innovative approach, allying UHPLc and Turboflow column, was developed and its sensitivity, linearity, specificity and repeatability validated. Preliminary results of the clinical trial are in accordance with literature data, demonstrating its efficiency in radiometabolites quantification.

Mirtazapine (MTZ) is an antidepressant drug, which belongs to the chemical class of piperazinoazepines. A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (Lc-MS/MS) method was developed for the quantifica- tion of MTZ in plasma at the concentrations associated with therapy. Diazepam (DZP) was used as internal standard, added to 200 μL of plasma sample prior to a liquid-liquid extraction using hexane. chroma- tographic separation was achieved on an Agilent? Eclipse XDB c-18 column (100 × 2.1 mm, 3.5 μm) in iso- cratic mode at 40?c. Mobile phase was 10 mM ammonium acetate/acetonitrile/formic acid (60/40/0.1, v/v/v) at a constant flow rate of 0.5 mL?min–1. The injection volume was 10 ?L and the total run time was 3.2 min. The method shows selectivity and linearity. The detection and quantitation limits were established at 0.17 and 0.50 ng?mL–1, respectively. The extraction recoveries for MTZ and DZP were found to be between 84.9 and 93.9%. The intra-day and inter-day precision and accuracy fulfill at the international acceptance criteria. The method shows to be stable for the studied parameters. Therefore, a rapid, specific, and sensitive Lc-MS/MS method for quantification of MTZ in human plasma was developed and can be used in therapeu- tic drug monitoring of this drug.

In Search of A cure for Alzheimer's Disease

For nearly four decades,our research has focused on dissecting the cytopathology of Alzheimer’s disease(AD) with the goal of developing a cure. We have used oxidative stress as a window to view and understand AD. Oxidative damage to sugars,proteins,lipids and nucleic acids increases in neuronal cytoplasm. The same neuronal compartment has increased redox-active iron and copper,which can catalyze oxidative damage,and likely derive from mitochondrial debris(in and outside lysosomes) including cytochromes,mitochondria specific prosthetic groups and mtDNA. Mitochondria show altered axonal transport,size distribution,energetics,fusion/fission,and degradation in AD that correlate with the extent of oxidative damage suggesting they are the origin. Surprisingly,amyloidβ and tau are quantitatively associated with reduced neuronal oxidative damage. copper sequestration by amyloidβ blocks copper mediated oxidation of lipids and vitamin c indicating amyloidβ can be a protective response rather than the initiator of AD. Instead of being bound to amyloidβ,iron is present as 10 nm magnetite crystals with super-paramagnetic properties. Not just amyloidβ,but also tau,may be protective responses induced in AD to maintain neurons with altered balance for decades. While these studies put oxidative stress at the center of AD,they also highlight a complexity of multifaceted alterations that is homeostatic and requires a deeper level of understanding before an effective cure.

An Evaluation on the Physical and chemical composition of coal combustion Ash and Its co-Placement with coal-Mine Waste Rock

In the last few decades, the utilization of coal to generate electricity was rapidly increasing. consequently, the production of coal combustion ash (ccA) as a by-product of coal utilization as primary energy sources was increased. The physical and geochemical characteristics of ccA were site-specific which determined by both inherent coal-source quality and combustion condition. This study was intended to characterize the physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of a coal-combustion ash (ccA) from a site specific power plant and evaluate the leachate characteristic of some scenario on the co-placement of ccA with coal-mine waste rock. The physical properties such as specific gravity, dry density, porosity and particle size distribution were determined. chemically, the ccA sample is enriched mainly in silica, aluminum, iron, and magnesium along with a little amount of calcium and sodium which includes in the class c fly ash category. Moreover, it is found that the mineral phases identified in the sample were quartz, mullite, aragonite, magnetite, hematite, and spinel. co-placement experiment with mudstone waste rock shows that the ccA, though it has limited contribution to the decreasing permeability, has important contributed to increase the quality of leachate through releasing higher alkalinity. Moreover, addition of ccA did not affect to the increase of the trace metal element in the leachate. Hence, utilization of ccA by co-placement with coal mine waste rock in the dumping area is visible to be implemented.

In this White Paper we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry(eXTP) mission for studies related to Observatory Science targets. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. Developed by an international consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s.
