The tragedy of Vila Socó epitomizes the socio-environmental repercussions of rapid industrialization in Cubatão. Beginning in the 1940s with the construction of the Anchieta highway, the city experienced an influx of migrants drawn by burgeoning industries, leading to unplanned urban growth and the emergence of vulnerable communities like Vila Socó. This article examines the interconnected factors—such as demographic shifts, inadequate planning, and regulatory oversight—that culminated in the devastating fire of 1984, claiming numerous lives and highlighting systemic failures. Utilizing the Haddon Matrix, this study dissects the Vila Socó incident, emphasizing the roles of human error, infrastructure integrity, and socio-economic disparities in disaster causation. By contextualizing the tragedy within Cubatão’s industrial trajectory, it underscores the urgent need for comprehensive risk assessment and proactive mitigation strategies in rapidly developing regions globally. Beyond its immediate focus, this work offers broader insights into the dynamics of industrial disasters and their socio-economic implications. BrФnsted-acidic zeolite and zeotype materials are potential catalysts for the conversion of ethene to higher alkenes. In this study, two materials with AFI structure but different acid strength, H-SAPO-5 and H-SSZ-24, were subject to studies of ethene, cis-2-butene and ethene-butene mixture conversion under conditions where C3-C5 alkene formation is thermodynamically favoured over higher hydrocarbons(673-823 K, 1 atm). Ethene and cis-2-butene partial pressures were varied in the range 9-60 and 0.9-8.1 kPa, respectively, and contact times were varied in the range 3.78-756 and 0.573-76.4 s.μmol H+/cm^3 over H-SAPO-5 and H-SSZ-24, respectively. Less than 1% conversion of ethene and less than 10% conversion of butene was obtained in the range of conditions used for elucidation of rate parameters. The ethene conversion rates were more than an order of magnitude higher over the more acidic H-SSZ-24 than over H-SAPO-5(6.5 vs. 0.3 mmol/mol H+.s at 748 K, Pethene = 33 kP a), with corresponding lower reaction order in ethene(1.5 vs. 2.0 at 673 K) and lower apparent activation energy(52 vs. 80 kJ/mol at 698-823 K). Propene selectivity was substantially higher over H-SSZ-24 than over H-SAPO-5(68% vs. 36% at 0.5% ethene conversion). A similar difference in apparent reaction rates was observed for cis-2-butene conversion over the two catalysts, and for co-feeds of ethene and cis-2-butene. However, the cis-2-butene conversion to C3-C5 alkenes was found to be severely influenced by thermodynamic limitations, impeding a detailed kinetic analysis, and leading predominantly to isobutene formation at the highest temperatures.

BACKGROUND The impact of the coronavirus on hospitalizations for gastrointestinal(GI)disease,particularly at a population level is *** To investigate trends in hospitalizations,inpatient endoscopy resource utilization,and outcomes during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent *** Using the California State Inpatient Database for 2018-2020,we explored year-toyear and 2020 month-to-month trends in hospitalizations,length of stay,and inpatient mortality(all-cause&viral pneumonia-specific)for common inpatient GI diagnoses including acute pancreatitis,diverticulitis,cholelithiasis,noninfectious gastroenteritis,upper and lower GI bleeding(LGIB),Clostridium difficile,viral gastroenteritis,inflammatory bowel disease,and acute *** Disease-specific hospitalizations decreased for all included conditions except nonvariceal upper GI bleeding(NVUGIB),LGIB,and ulcerative colitis(UC)(ptrend<0.0001).Allcause inpatient mortality was higher in 2020 vs 2019,for acute pancreatitis(P=0.029),diverticulitis(P=0.04),NVUGIB(P=0.003),and Crohn’s disease(P=0.004).In 2020,hospitalization rates were lowest in April,November,and *** was no significant corresponding increase in inpatient mortality except in UC(ptrend=0.048).Viral pneumonia and viral pneumonia complicated by respiratory failure increased(P<0.001)among GI *** utilization within 24 h of admission was unchanged for GI emergencies except NVUGIB(P<0.001).CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that hospitalization rates for common GI conditions significantly declined in California during the COVID pandemic,particularly in April,November and December *** mortality was significantly higher among acute pancreatitis,diverticulitis,NVUGIB,and Crohn’s disease *** endoscopy rates were mostly comparable between 2020 and 2019.

The effects of substitution of Sn for Co on the microstructure, hydrogen storage and electrochemical discharge capacity of La0.7Mg0.3Al0.3Mn0.4Co0.5-xSnxNi3.8 （x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5） alloys were investigated using X-ray diffraction （Xrd）, pressure composition isotherm （PCT） and electrochemical discharge cycle. Xrd, scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and energy dispersive spectroscopy （EDS） tests showed that all of alloys are mainly composed of LaNi5 and MgNi2 phases, but when increasing the content of Sn in alloys, the LaNiSn phase appears and microstructure is refined. The PCT showed that increasing substitution of Sn for Co results in decrease of the maximum hydrogen storage capacity from 1.48% （x=0） to 0.85% （x=0.5）. The electrochemical tests indicated that the maximum discharge capacity decreases from 337.1 mA-h/g （x=0） to 239.8 mA.h/g （x=0.5）; however, the discharge capacity retention at the 100th cycle increases from 70.2% （x=0） to 78.0% （x=0.5）.
