BACKGROUND Budd-Chiari syndrome(BCS)is a challenging indication for liver transplantation(LT)due to a combination of massive liver,increased bleeding,retroperitoneal fibrosis and frequently presents with stenosis of the inferior vena cava(IVC).Occasionally,it may be totally thrombosed,increasing the complexity of the procedure,as it should also be *** challenge is even greater when performing living-donor LT as the graft does not contain the retrohepatic IVC;thus,it may be necessary to reconstruct *** SUMMARY A 35-year-old male patient with liver cirrhosis due to BCS and hepatocellular carcinoma beyond the Milan criteria underwent living-donor LT with IVC *** was necessary to remove the IVC as its retrohepatic portion was completely thrombosed,up to almost the right atrium.A right-lobe graft was retrieved from his sister,with outflow reconstruction including the right hepatic vein and the branches of segment V and VIII to the middle hepatic *** to massive subcutaneous collaterals in the abdominal wall,venovenous bypass was implemented before incising the *** right atrium was reached via a transdiaphragramatic *** was performed en bloc with the retrohepatic vena *** was reconstructed with an infra-hepatic vena cava graft obtained from a deceased *** patient remains well on outpatient clinic follow-up 25 mo after the procedure,under an anticoagulation protocol with *** Living-donor LT in BCS with IVC thrombosis is feasible using a meticulous surgical technique and tailored strategies.

The tragedy of Vila Socó epitomizes the socio-environmental repercussions of rapid industrialization in Cubatão. Beginning in the 1940s with the construction of the Anchieta highway, the city experienced an influx of migrants drawn by burgeoning industries, leading to unplanned urban growth and the emergence of vulnerable communities like Vila Socó. This article examines the interconnected factors—such as demographic shifts, inadequate planning, and regulatory oversight—that culminated in the devastating fire of 1984, claiming numerous lives and highlighting systemic failures. Utilizing the Haddon Matrix, this study dissects the Vila Socó incident, emphasizing the roles of human error, infrastructure integrity, and socio-economic disparities in disaster causation. By contextualizing the tragedy within Cubatão’s industrial trajectory, it underscores the urgent need for comprehensive risk assessment and proactive mitigation strategies in rapidly developing regions globally. Beyond its immediate focus, this work offers broader insights into the dynamics of industrial disasters and their socio-economic implications. Evolutionary fingerprint, phylogenetic and forest structure of tropical montane Atlantic cloud forests along an elevation gradient

Environmental conditions can change markedly over geographical distances along elevation gradients,making them natural laboratories to study the processes that structure *** work aimed to assess the influences of elevation on Tropical Montane Cloud Forest plant communities in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest,a historically neglected *** evaluated the phylogenetic structure,forest structure(tree basal area and tree density)and species richness along an elevation gradient,as well as the evolutionary fingerprints of elevation-success on phylogenetic lineages from the tree *** do so,we assessed nine communities along an elevation gradient from 1210 to 2310 m *** large elevation *** relationships between elevation and phylogenetic structure,forest structure and species richness were investigated through Linear *** occurrence of evolutionary fingerprint on phylogenetic lineages was investigated by quantifying the extent of phylogenetic signal of elevation-success using a genus-level molecular *** results showed decreased species richness at higher elevations and independence between forest structure,phylogenetic structure and *** also verified that there is a phylogenetic signal associated with elevation-success by *** concluded that the elevation is associated with species richness and the occurrence of phylogenetic lineages in the tree communities evaluated in Mantiqueira *** the other hand,elevation is not associated with forest structure or phylogenetic ***,closely related taxa tend to have their higher ecological success in similar ***,we highlight the fragility of the tropical montane cloud forests in the Mantiqueira Range in face of environmental changes(*** warming)due to the occurrence of exclusive phylogenetic lineages evolutionarily adapted to environmental conditions(*** temperature)associated with each elevation range.

Trends in gastrointestinal disease hospitalizations and outcomes during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic

BACKGROUND The impact of the coronavirus on hospitalizations for gastrointestinal(GI)disease,particularly at a population level is *** To investigate trends in hospitalizations,inpatient endoscopy resource utilization,and outcomes during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent *** Using the California State Inpatient Database for 2018-2020,we explored year-toyear and 2020 month-to-month trends in hospitalizations,length of stay,and inpatient mortality(all-cause&viral pneumonia-specific)for common inpatient GI diagnoses including acute pancreatitis,diverticulitis,cholelithiasis,noninfectious gastroenteritis,upper and lower GI bleeding(LGIB),Clostridium difficile,viral gastroenteritis,inflammatory bowel disease,and acute *** Disease-specific hospitalizations decreased for all included conditions except nonvariceal upper GI bleeding(NVUGIB),LGIB,and ulcerative colitis(UC)(ptrend<0.0001).Allcause inpatient mortality was higher in 2020 vs 2019,for acute pancreatitis(P=0.029),diverticulitis(P=0.04),NVUGIB(P=0.003),and Crohn’s disease(P=0.004).In 2020,hospitalization rates were lowest in April,November,and *** was no significant corresponding increase in inpatient mortality except in UC(ptrend=0.048).Viral pneumonia and viral pneumonia complicated by respiratory failure increased(P<0.001)among GI *** utilization within 24 h of admission was unchanged for GI emergencies except NVUGIB(P<0.001).CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that hospitalization rates for common GI conditions significantly declined in California during the COVID pandemic,particularly in April,November and December *** mortality was significantly higher among acute pancreatitis,diverticulitis,NVUGIB,and Crohn’s disease *** endoscopy rates were mostly comparable between 2020 and 2019.

Old climatically-buffered infertile landscapes(OCBILs):more than harsh habitats,Atlantic Forest inselbergs can be drivers of evolutionary diversity

Granite-gneiss rock outcrop inselbergs are ancient stable ecosystems with old,climaticallybuffered infertile landscapes(OCBILs).Although inselbergs provide key ecosystem services,little is done for their conservation and,so far,a lot of their unknown evolutionary history has already been lost by human *** a fine-scale approach,here we tested if habitat and environmental filtering(the inselberg’s harshness)affect the evolutionary diversity of an Atlantic Forest inselberg in *** recorded all trees with a diameter at breast height≥5cm in 20 plots in four habitat types(total sampled area of 0.8 hectares),from highest to lowest:island,hillside,foothill,and semideciduous forest(matrix).We also collected soil samples for chemical,textural and physical soil *** fitted linear models to test the effects of soil and habitat on plotlevel metrics of phylogenetic diversity and structure,lineage diversity,phylogeneticβ-diversity,and evolutionary *** found that the upper inselberg habitats contain a distinct set of ancient,closely related,harsh-tolerant lineages,as well as a subset of lineages that persist under harsh conditions with a certain degree of water *** inferior inselberg habitats harbor higher lineage diversity than expected by *** strongly predicted evolutionary *** concluded that soil depth,slope,nutrients and texture(environmental filtering)and habitat types and topography(habitat filtering)shape the evolutionary history contained in fine-scale inselberg habitats,which should encourage the conservation of these ancient ecosystems.

Melting behavior and globular microstructure formation in semi-solid CoCrCuxFeNi high-entropy alloys

High-entropy alloys can be compelling raw materials for semi-solid *** the present study,the influence of the Cu content on the melting behavior and semi-solid microstructure of CoCrCuxFeNi(x=0,1,2,3)alloys was ***-melted samples were cross-rolled at room temperature and then isothermally treated at 1175℃in the semi-solid state for 300 *** characterization showed that the alloys containing Cu were formed by two fcc ***,the increase in Cu content also led to an increase in the volumetric fraction of the Cu-rich *** solidification,this phase,which is the last to form,nucleates and epitaxially grows on the Cu-lean *** the studied CoCrCuFeNi alloys exhibited the same melting *** Cu-rich phase melts at approximately 1120℃,whereas the Culean phase melts at approximately 1350℃,providing a suitable processing temperature range of more than 200℃.The semi-solid microstructures were considerably refined and globular regardless of the alloy composition,being suitable for semi-solid ***,each fcc phase exhibited roughly the same composition under the different processing *** Cu content in the Cu-lean phase was approximately 10 at.%,while Co,Cr,Fe,and Ni were in an approximately equiatomic ***,the Cu content was between 80 at.%and 86 at.%in the Cu-rich *** isothermal treatment of the CoCrCu3FeNi alloy at a higher temperature(1300℃)only caused the globules to *** conclusion,this work showed that these alloys can be potential candidates for semi-solid processing.

Extensive right coronary artery thrombosis in a patient with COVID-19:A case report

BACKGROUND Occurring in approximately 30%of hospitalized patients,cardiovascular complications that take place during the course of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)have been shown to cause morbidity and *** case is the first report of extensive right coronary artery(RCA)thrombosis that was evaluated by intracoronary imaging and intracoronary invasive physiology in a patient with *** SUMMARY A 62-year-old woman presented with flu-like symptoms;ten days later,she presented with inferior ST-segment elevations,chest pain,dyspnea,nausea and *** patient was diagnosed with COVID-19 following a positive test *** angiography of the RCA and its branches indicated intraluminal filling defects,suggesting a *** ultrasound confirmed a subacute thrombus in the RCA,the right posterior descending branch and the right posterior ventricular(RPV)*** was also an acute thrombus in the RPV branch and atherosclerosis in the *** antiplatelet/anticoagulation therapy was *** 7 d,angiography revealed complete disappearance of the *** coherence tomography confirmed this with the exception of a small thrombus in the RPV branch and atherosclerotic plaque in the *** atherosclerotic RCA was measured using the resting fullcycle ratio,indicating no impairment to coronary *** patient was discharged on the 11^(th) day of hospitalization and remained asymptomatic through the 6-mo *** This was the first report of RCA thrombosis in a patient with *** antiplatelet/anticoagulation therapy was successful.

Background:In Cerrado humid areas,veredas are considered as hygrophilous communities,marked by the presence of the Mauritia flexuosa palm tree emerging in the wetter *** in veredas ecosystems due to drought and changes in the water table,which represent important areas for biodiversity maintenance in the Brazilian cerrado,can lead to the emergence of new landscapes and *** that the veredas are changed in species composition due to anthropogenic factors,in this study,we evaluated the flora composition and described the current vegetation profile of two veredas under different disturbances levels that are located in the north of Minas Gerais State,***:Altogether,2,268 individuals of 91 species belonging to 36 families were *** results demonstrated that the studied veredas were floristically different in terms of the arboreous-shrubby species composition,richness,and *** the hygrophilous forest formations and open areas in the two veredas present typical species from these environments(same species with high importance values),the drought in the water table caused an expansion of Cerrado species in the open areas and in the hygrophilous ***,in the hygrophilous forest there was an increase in the abundance of species that occur in less saturated ***:Our results demonstrate that the studied veredas are changing in species composition due to anthropogenic factors which leads to the drought of these formations(water balance effect).These anthropogenic effects cause a modification with the expansion and increase in the abundance of typical species of other areas of Cerrado and resistant to less saturated soils,leading to the veredas ***,future studies should investigate other veredas on a broader scale to detect changes in the water table that lead to a consequent change in vegetation *** this way,we will have support for the conscientious management and conservatio
