Optimizing Nitrogen Use Efficiency for No-Till Corn Production by Improving Root Growth and Capturing NO_(3)-N in Subsoil

Subsoil acidity restricts root growth and reduces crop yields in many parts of the world. More than half of the fertilizer nitrogen(N) applied in crop production is currently lost to the environment. This study aimed to investigate the effect of gypsum application on the efficiency of N fertilizer in no-till corn(Zea mays L.) production in southern Brazil. A field experiment examined the effects of surface-applied gypsum(0, 5, 10, and 15 Mg ha^(-1)) and top-dressed ammonium nitrate(NH_4NO_3)(60, 120, and 180 kg N ha^(-1)) on corn root length, N uptake, and grain yield. A greenhouse experiment was conducted using undisturbed soil columns collected from the field experiment site to evaluate NO_3-N leaching, N uptake, and root length with surface-applied gypsum(0 and 10 Mg ha^(-1)) and top-dressed NH_4NO_3(0 and 180 kg N ha^(-1)). Amelioration of subsoil acidity due to gypsum application increased corn root growth,N uptake, grain yield, and N use efficiency. Applying gypsum to the soil surface increased corn grain yield by 19%–38% and partial factor productivity of N(PFPN) by 27%–38%, depending on the N application rate. Results of the undisturbed soil column greenhouse experiment showed that improvement of N use efficiency by gypsum application was due to the higher N uptake from NO_3-N in the subsoil as a result of increased corn root length. Our results suggest that ameliorating subsoil acidity with gypsum in a no-till corn system could increase N use efficiency, improve grain yield, and reduce environmental risks due to NO_3-N leaching.

Background: Extracranial Carotid Artery Aneurysm is considered a therapeutic and diagnostic challenge. In an unprecedented way in the literature, we describe an aneurysm originating from the Catastrophic Antiphospholipid Syndrome. Case Presentation: A 25-year-old male patient came to the Emergency Room of the ABC University Hospital in Sao Bernardo do Campo referring to bilateral neck pain for 1 month, associated with carotid aneurysms. Due to the severity and urgency of the clinical condition, immediate surgical therapy was performed without a definitive etiological diagnosis. The initial morphological analysis of the carotid artery suggested a diagnosis of Polyarteritis Nodosa. After anamnesis, physical examination, the use of a specific primary vasculitis algorithm, and a review of the pathological anatomy was requested, which showed bilateral carotid aneurysms secondary to catastrophic antiphosp

Neuroprotection induced by NMDA preconditioning as a strategy to understand brain tolerance mechanism

Excitotoxicity refers to toxicity caused by abnormal concentrations of glutamate in the synaptic cleft that may lead to neuronal death. Since its description, the phenomenon of glutamatergic excitotoxicity has been implicated in the physiopathology of a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders, from acute brain damage such as traumatic brain injury, ischemia as well as chronic condi- tions like epilepsy, depression and neurodegenerative pathologies such as Huntington＇s, Parkinson＇s and Alzheimer＇s diseases. Exces- sive stimulation of glutamatergic receptors, mainly N-methyl-D-as- partate （NMDA） receptors （NMDAR）, can have numerous adverse effects on the cell viability, including increased nitric oxide release （NO）, activation of proteases, increased production of reactive oxygen （ROS） and nitrogen （RNS） species and massive influx of calcium ions （Ca2＋）, resulting in cell death. Thus, the use of strategies that modulate the excitotoxic cell damage represents a perspective for the treatment of diseases such as Parkinson＇s and Alzheimer＇s diseases, ischemia, traumatic brain injury （TBI） and seizures.

Because of the presence of modified warp factors in metric tensors,we use deformed AdS5 spaces to apply the AdS/CFT correspondence to calculate the spectra for even and odd glueballs,scalar and vector mesons,and baryons with different *** the glueball cases,we derive their Regge trajectories and compare them with those related to the pomeron and the *** the scalar and vector mesons,as well as baryons,the determined masses are compatible with the *** particular,for these hadrons we found Regge trajectories compatible with another holographic approach as well as with the hadronic spectroscopy,which present an universal Regge slope of approximately 1.1 GeV^2.

Periodic Modulation of Nonlinearity in a Fiber Bragg Grating:A Numerical Investigation

We present numerical studies on the switching characteristics of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with modulation in the third order nonlinear index of refraction along it’s length. The FBG is operating in a continuous wave regime (CW). This study was done taking into account the possible asymmetry brought by the non harmonic modulation of the nonlinearity, leading to different reflection and transmission characteristics, that depend on the direction of propagation along the modulated nonlinear FBG. This phenomenon may be useful for applications like an optical isolator. It was found that for a set of values of the modulation parameter, the FBG can exhibit multistable states. The numerical studies were obtained starting from the coupled-mode equations solved from the coupled-mode theory and simulated using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method.

Determination of the Bromine, Manganese and Antimony in Nicotiana tabacum Solanaceae by Using the Neutron Activation Analysis Technique

Tobacco addiction has been mentioned as a leading cause of preventable illnesses and premature disability. Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer and one of the factors that most contribute to the occurrence of heart diseases, among others. The herbaceous species Nicotiana tabacum is a plant of the solanaceae family used for tobacco production. Some authors have conducted research about heavy metals and the toxicity of tobacco. It is, frequently, found in low concentrations in the ground, and superficial and underground waters, even though they do not have environmental anthropogenic contributions. However, with the increase of industrial activities and mining together with the agrochemical use of contaminated organic and inorganic fertilizers, an alteration of the geochemical cycle occurs. As a consequence, the natural flow of these materials increases and is released into the biosphere, where they are often accumulated in the superior layer of the ground, accessible to the roots of the plants. During planting and plant development, fertilizers and insecticides, including organochlorines and organophosphates, are used;consequently, the smoke from cigarette smoking presents various toxic substances, such as bromine (Br), manganese (Mn) and antimony (Sb), elements studied in this work. The procedures for the preparation of the samples were carried out in our laboratories and submitted to irradiation with thermal neutrons at Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN/CNEN-SP), in the Atomic Energy Institute IEA-R1 research reactor. The irradiated material was, then, analyzed by gamma spectrometry, using a high purity germanium detector (HPGe).

Monthly and seasonal streamflow forecasting of large dryland catchments in Brazil

Streamflow forecasting in drylands is *** are scarce,catchments are highly humanmodified and streamflow exhibits strong nonlinear responses to *** goal of this study was to evaluate the monthly and seasonal streamflow forecasting in two large catchments in the Jaguaribe River Basin in the Brazilian semi-arid *** adopted four different lead times:one month ahead for monthly scale and two,three and four months ahead for seasonal *** gaps of the historic streamflow series were filled up by using rainfall-runoff ***,time series model techniques were applied,i.e.,the locally constant,the locally averaged,the k-nearest-neighbours algorithm(k-NN)and the autoregressive(AR)*** criterion of reliability of the validation results is that the forecast is more skillful than streamflow *** approach outperformed the streamflow climatology for all monthly *** average,the former was 25%better than the *** seasonal streamflow forecasting(SSF)was also reliable(on average,20%better than the climatology),failing slightly only for the high flow season of one catchment(6%worse than the climatology).Considering an uncertainty envelope(probabilistic forecasting),which was considerably narrower than the data standard deviation,the streamflow forecasting performance increased by about 50%at both *** forecast errors were mainly driven by the streamflow intra-seasonality at monthly scale,while they were by the forecast lead time at seasonal *** best-fit and worst-fit time series model were the k-NN approach and the AR model,*** rainfall-runoff modelling outputs played an important role in improving streamflow forecasting for one streamgauge that showed 35%of data *** developed data-driven approach is mathematical and computationally very simple,demands few resources to accomplish its operational implementation and is applicable to other dryland *** findings may be part of drou

Background:Drought‐tolerant turfgrass cultivars are becoming more important each year as landscape irrigation practices are becoming more ***:In this study,we quantified the level of drought tolerance(DT)in perennial ryegrass and tall fescue genotypes across years under different mowing(MH)and fertility(FL)rates.A total of 48 ryegrass and 38 tall fescue genotypes were planted in 2011 at NexGen,Albany,*** trial was divided into three subtrials:(i)DT;(ii)MH and DT;and(iii)FL and ***:The results showed that there was significant genetic variance for most of the traits in both *** genotype×year interaction was predominantly simple,indicating small changes in genotype ranking for both *** MH improved DT in perennial ryegrass,whereas higher MH resulted in greater DT in tall *** both species,higher MH improved the population mean for turf *** FL inputs led to higher turf quality for both species,but it did not affect the DT ***:Using a selection index,six genotypes for perennial ryegrass and four for tall fescue were selected.
