Seabirds are valuable indicators of marine ecosystem processes and studying seabird diets can shed light on natural or human-induced variability in food-web *** single-prey loading seabird species such as terns have the potential to act as visual sentinels of prey availability ***,obtaining diet information from remote bird colonies is often challenging and time *** this pilot study we present a novel approach to combine two established methods to study seabird foraging ecology,providing a powerful and cost-effective tool to study the distribution of prey items available to *** combined GPS tracking data of Sandwich Terns(Thalasseus sandvicensis)with prey-observations from a hide in 2012 and 2013,and from semicontinuously recorded camera footage in *** doing so,we identified 115 approximate catch locations of prey(86 herring/sprat clupeidae,29 sandeel Ammodytidae).combining GPS-data and prey observations yielded detailed knowledge on the movements and chick diets of tracked birds as well as the spatial origin and lengths of captured prey *** catch distances of both clupeidae and Ammodytidae resulted in deliveries of larger prey items and thus higher energy yield per trip,but also a higher energy expenditure per *** discuss the limitations and potential of our methodological approach to study foraging energetics during chick-provisioning of seabirds that carry prey items visible in their beaks.

Shoot-level biomass allocation is affected by shoot type in Fagus sylvatica

Aims The present study aims(i)to examine if recently reported interspecific shoot-level biomass allocational trade-offs,*** trade-offs between leaf mass(LM)and stem mass(SM)and between leaf size and leaf number,hold intraspecifically and(ii)to explore whether those scaling relationships are independent of shoot type(*** *** shoots).Methods In order to address our questions,we used Fagus sylvatica saplings growing under a broad light range that were sampled in theWestern carpathians Mountains(Slovakia).Important Findings We found that:(i)intraspecific shoot-level biomass allocational trade-offs differ from those reported interspecifically and that(ii)long and short shoots differ in biomass allocation scaling *** relationships with slopes statistically smaller than 1.0 or higher than-1.0,were found between SM and LM and between mean leafing intensity and individual leaf mass,respectively,in long *** contrast,isometric scaling was found in short *** suggests that leaf mass in short shoots is unaffected by shoot stem mass,in contrast to long *** shoots also had a larger fraction of biomass allocated to *** shoots,as has been observed in other shoot dimorphic species,are specialized,with short shoots specializing in carbon gain and long shoots in space acquisition.A greater shift in LM than in SM among species during speciation shifting from allometric intraspecific relationships to an isometric interspecific scaling relationship between those traits could explain the discrepancies between the outputs of the present intraspecific study and others similar *** study draws attention to the importance of considering shoot types in future studies dealing with allocation rules in species with dimorphic shoots.

Study on carnauba wax as phase-change material integrated in evacuated-tube collector for solar-thermal heat production

The evacuated-tube collector(ETc)for solar heat production is one of the most efficient systems to convert Sun energy into usable ***,some technological barriers are still present in solar-thermal heat systems that limit the use of these technologies to decarbonize *** important obstacle is the requirement for heat at stable temperatures,which is not always achievable by solar fields,*** *** that reason,in this work,we studied the phase-change materials embedded in the ETc to keep stable the water temperature for a short period(minutes,hours).In this study,carnauba wax was used as a sustainable phase-change material(PcM),to avoid the use of PcM based on hydrocarbon *** PcM has been packaged using a polyethylene bag inserted into an ETc with heat-pipe technologies and *** collector has been tested outdoors under solar irradiation and under shading *** experimental results show that is possible to detect a sensible effect of the PcM on the temperature using 4 kg of carnauba wax while there is an important effect on the temperature stabilization using 9 kg of *** 9 kg of the PcM,we observed a stability of the outlet water temperature at 65°c for 30 minutes under shading conditions.

The history of procedures for liver regeneration in the context of extended resections changed with the incorporation of Associating Liver Partition to Portal Vein Ligation in Two-Staged Hepatectomy(ALPPS)(1).The main well-known advantages of the ALPPS procedure are a fast and feasible increase in liver volume within a short period of time which leads to a second-stage procedure in 2-3 weeks.

Single-center study comparing computed tomography colonography with conventional colonoscopy

AIM:To compare the results from computed tomography (cT) colonography with conventional colonoscopy in symptomatic patients referred for colonoscopy. METHODS: The study included 227 adult outpatients, mean age 60 years, with appropriate indications for colonoscopy. cT colonography and colonoscopy were performed on the same day in a metropolitan teaching hospital. colonoscopists were initially blinded to the results of cT colonography but there was segmental unblinding during the procedure. The primary outcome measures were the sensitivity and specificity of cT colonography for the identification of polyps seen at colonoscopy (i.e. analysis by polyp). Secondary outcome measures included an analysis by patient, extracolonic findings at cT colonography, adverse events with both procedures and patient acceptance and preference. RESULTS: Twenty-five patients (11%) were excluded from the analysis because of incomplete colonoscopy or poor bowel preparation that affected either cT colonography, colonoscopy or both procedures. Polyps and masses (usually cancers) were detected at colonoscopy and cT colonography in 35% and 42% of patients, respectively. Of nine patients with a finaldiagnosis of cancer, eight (89%) were identified by cT colonography as masses (5) or polyps (3). For polyps analyzed according to polyp, the overall sensitivity of cT colonography was 50% (95% cI, 39%-61%) but this increased to 71% (95% cI, 52%-85%) for polyps ≥ 6 mm in size. Similarly, specificity for all polyps was 48% (95% cI, 39%-58%) increasing to 67% (95% cI, 56%-76%) for polyps ≥ 6 mm. Adverse events were uncommon but included one colonic perforation at colonoscopy. Patient acceptance was high for both procedures but preference favoured cT colonography. cONcLUSION: Although cT colonography was more sensitive in this study than in some previous studies, the procedure is not yet sensitive enough for widespread application in symptomatic patients.

Histone deacetylases,microRNA and leptin crosstalk in pancreatic cancer

Towards full repair of defects in reduced graphene oxide films by two-step graphitization

The complete restoration of a perfect carbon lattice has been a central issue in the research on graphene derived from graphite oxide since this preparation route was first proposed several years ago, but such a goal has so far remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate that the highly defective structure of reduced graphene oxide sheets assembled into free-standing, paper-like films can be fully repaired by means of high temperature annealing （graphitization）. characterization of the films by X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy indicated that the main stages in the transformation of the films were （i） complete removal of oxygen functional groups and generation of atomic vacancies （up to 1,500 ~c）, and （ii） vacancy annihilation and coalescence of adjacent overlapping sheets to yield continuous polycrystalline layers （1,800-2,700 ~c） similar to those of highly oriented graphites. The prevailing type of defect in the polycrystalline layers were the grain boundaries separating neighboring domains, which were typically a few hundred nanometers in lateral size, exhibited long-range graphitic order and were virtually free of even atomic-sized defects. The electrical conductivity of the annealed films was as high as 577,000 S-m-1, which is by far the largest value reported to date for any material derived from graphene oxide, and strategies for further improvement without the need to resort to higher annealing temperatures are suggested. Overall, this work opens the prospect of truly achieving a complete restoration of the carbon lattice in graphene oxide materials.
