Olive Leaf Spot (OLS) is found in many parts of the world and cause readuced growth and yield in olive trees. In this study, investigations were carried out to measure the incidence (% infected leaves) and severity (number of lesions/leaf) of OLS in olive growing regions in Palestine, including the regions of Hebron, Bethlehem, Tulkarm, Salfit, Jenin, Nablus, Ramallah and Qalqiyah. OLS was found in all study areas with significantly higher percent incidences in Jenin and Nablus (67.16% ± 18.16% and 46.06% ± 23.70%, respectively). OLS was more severe in Nablus, Qalqilyah, Jenin and Tulkarm (severity grade 3.0 - 3.7). Analysis indicate that there is a positive correlation (R2 = 0.597) between disease incidence and severity. OLS appeared to be particularly severe on trees that were growing in regions with higher annual rainfall. The correlation between severity and rainfall was positive (R2 = 0.543).

Objective: Using simulation in medical education was introduced in the 17th century, applying different techniques. The introduction of using simulated patients (SP) was also of great importance in both learning and evaluation processes. Aims: This current study aims at assessing medical students’ perception about the use of well-trained drama students from the school of Arts in simulated session of breaking bad news encounter. Study Design: This is a per- and post-test study. Methods: 112 students were asked to fill a pre-validated questionnaire, who trained from January 2017 till the end of July 2017 pre- and post-exposure to simulated clinical encounter, where one well trained senior drama student played the role of patient, one student played the doctor who would break the bad news (BBN), debriefing before the encounter, and discussion after took place. Another validated questionnaire was distributed after the encounter, to assess the students’ experience. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 20. Results: Scores of all questions showed statistically significant improvement after the simulation session (p-value Conclusion: Simulation encounter, using drama students who are well-trained in human grief reaction, making BBN learning more positive and effective, merging two faculties improved the learning experience of both medical and Drama students.

The Epidemiology of Acne Vulgaris among Adolescents and Young Adults in Jordan University Hospital

Background: Acne vulgaris is a widely prevalent distressing problem among young adults and adolescents. Almost one-third of young people consider acne to be a major problem/burden. Less than half of acne diagnoses are made by a physician, and acne is often self-managed. Objective: We aim to find the prevalence of acne among different age groups, treatment seeking behaviors and sources of knowledge about acne treatment. We also aim to determine impact of acne vulgaris on quality of life and psychology of patients. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: Jordan university hospital, Amman, Jordan. Subjects: Patients aged 15 - 35 years old who attended the family medicine clinic in Jordan University Hospital. Intervention: A self-administered questionnaire, consisted of three major parts, distributed during the period between August 2019 and October 2019. Results: Upon analyzing the data, 153 out of the 300 participants were found to have suffered or were still suffering from acne with a prevalence of 45%. The mean age at which the acne started was 16.20. There was a significant correlation between severity of acne and impact on life. More than half of the affected participants sought doctor help to treat their acne;patients depended on many sources of information to manage their acne. The majority of them reported the dermatologist as their source of information. Patients tended to use different methods of treatment to manage their acne. The cleanser was the most commonly used methods of treatment. Conclusion: Our article demonstrates that acne is a prevalent distressing problem among adolescents;it affects patients’ quality of life. Different modalities of treatment and sources of information were sought by patients. As family doctors, we emphasize the need for accessible, accurate, community-based education on the modalities of treatment of acne, and the importance of prompt medical attention toward its effect on quality of life.

Bacterial infections present a serious challenge to healthcare practitioners due to the emergence of resistance to numerous conventional antibacterial drugs. Therefore, new bacterial targets and new antimicrobials are unmet medical needs. Rhodanine derivatives are known to possess potent antimicrobial activities. In this study, we determined the activity spectrum of a series of new rhodanine derivatives against representative Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Compounds 3a and 5a had the highest activity with minimum inhibitory concentrations in the range of 1.12 - 2.5 μg/mL. Transmission electron microscope results confirmed that activities against bacteria occurred via rupturing of the cell wall. Molecular modeling results suggested that rhodanine derivatives have the potential to irreversibly bind to the penicillin-binding protein (PBP) Ser62 residue in the active site. Thus, our results suggested that these rhodanine derivatives could be potential antibacterial drug candidates with strong activity against Gram-negative bacteria.

Diagnostic Delay and Associated Clinical Features of Tuberculosis among Adult Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in Doha, Qatar

Background: Tuberculosis is currently the world’s leading cause of death arising from a single infectious condition. While T cell mediated immunity is recognized to have a major contribution to tuberculosis activation, the present investigation confirmed that TB was more prevalent among patients with acute myeloid rather than lymphoid leukemia and such association was frequently overlooked. The primary objective of this study is to estimate the diagnostic delay of tuberculosis among patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and compare it to the general population in Qatar. Secondary objective is to study the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of tuberculosis in patients with AML. Methods: This is a retrospective study of tuberculosis cases diagnosed in subjects with AML during the period from January 2008 till December 2016. Results: Among 215 subjects with AML identified during the study period, 12 (5.58%) received the diagnosis of tuberculosis. The estimated incidence of tuberculosis among AML cases was 7.14 cases per 1000 per year. The mean delay in diagnosis of tuberculosis was 64.2 days (95% CI: 26.8 - 101.5) and the median was 45 days (interquartile range;Q1 - Q3, 29.5 - 97.5). Prolonged fever was the most common presentation (100% of cases). Parenchymal lung involvement was the most common radiologic abnormality (83.3% of cases). Three patients (25%) died and 8 patients completed 9 to 12 months of anti-tuberculous treatment with clinical and radiological remission. Conclusion: Infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis are not uncommon in patients with AML especially in patients from tuberculosis endemic regions. It constitutes a diagnostic challenge so high index of suspicion is of paramount importance.

Introduction: One of the most common causes of hyperthyroidism is Graves’ disease. The malignant exophthalmos is a rare condition characterized by the loss of visual function that doesn’t adequately respond to various forms of treatment, requiring, in most cases, surgical correction. Objective: We report a case of conjunctival edema and protrusion of the eyeball in patients secondary to Graves’ disease, characterizing malignant ophthalmopathy and discuss their surgical treatment. Case Report: A 73-year-old male patient presenting bilateral conjunctive hyperaemia, decreased visual acuity, exophtalmos with progressive deterioration. Pulse therapy was performed without improvement and then underwent bilateral ethmoidectomy. Discussion: Late diagnosis is harmful due to the fact that malignant disease is extremely aggressive and fast, as reported in this case. Most often, the ophthalmopathy follows a relatively mild and self-limiting course, making a proper diagnosis difficult if the disease progresses. In extreme cases acute orbital decompression is indicated complementing appropriate medical treatment, which will allow herniation of orbital contents. Many orbital decompression techniques have been used in the treatment of Graves’ ophthalmopathy. The most common of these is the endoscopic sinus surgery which potentiated act in decompression of the medial wall safely and minimally invasive. In our case, open bilateral ethmoidectomy was used, due to the fact that surgeons are most experienced in this technique. Although the post-operative has been successfully submitted, no signs of recurrence were observed after fifteen days due to the evolution of Graves’ disease. Even with outpatient treatment, he walked to the total visual loss. Conclusion: We observed that the malignant ophthalmopathy is rare and aggressive;however, in spite of therapeutic resources used, it can progress to total visual loss.

Objective: To report a case of a multiple paraganglioma with 5 concurrent locations and also describe a complication not found in the literature, spontaneous tumor bleeding. Introduction: The paragangliomas are mostly benign and more frequent in women. Can be multiple, and these are considered as the most likely source of familial origin (30%-35%). The multicentric lesions can occur at different life stages not being necessarily simultaneous, a fact that prevents image exam research to be conclusive for tumor presence or absence. In this way the examination of the family members of patients, specially young ones, diagnosed with multicentric tumors may lead to negative results which doesn’t meant that the disease can be developed at a later time period. Therefore routine examination is not justifiable when symptoms relative to tumor presence are not present. Case report: A female patient of 32 years old complaining of tinnitus and diagnosed with five paragangliomas (jugulo-timpanic, bilateral carotid body and bilateral brachiocephalic trunk) through imaging studies. She reported suffering relatives of paragangliomas. Conclusion: The paper reports a rare case and perhaps unique in the literature, multiple paraganglioma with five locations and discusses difficult choice of treatment and complications.

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Back Pain among Medical Students in Sudan

Background: Back pain affects old and young adults, and it is a common complain among medical students. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of back pain and associated factors among medical students in Sudan. Method: An observational multi-universal cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2021 to February 2022, involving 433 medical students selected by simple random sampling. Data were collected by electronic Google Form questionnaire designed to assess demographic features, back pain characteristics, and triggering factors. Data analysis was done by statistical package for social sciences. Result: The prevalence of back pain among medical students in Sudan is 69.3%, with a statistically insignificant difference between preclinical and clinical students (p value: 0.378), and between male and female students (p value: 0.826). The lower back is the commonest site of pain (75%). The majority of the students experience moderate pain (53.9%). They did not use medications (81%). Sitting for long hours is the most common trigger (87.9%) and the pain did not interfere with the daily activities (71%). Conclusion: Back pain is a common complain among medical students in Sudan. Medical schools should raise the awareness of the students about back pain.
