Can Dietary Pomegranate Peels Reduce Stress Responses Associated with Group Mixing of Holstein Beef Calves？

The study investigated whether dietary CPE （concentrated pomegranate peel extract） may mitigate the negative effects associated with group mixing prior to marketing and enhance beef meat quality. Twenty-two bull calves were reared in triplets and divided to control （n = 9） and CPE-treated （n = 13） groups. CPE was supplemented during eight months of rearing, and calves were mixed 34 d prior to marketing to control and treatment groups. Calves were monitored for weight gain, rumination, activity, metabolic and oxidative stress responses, Finally, meat quality traits were examined. The results find that pre-mixing activity （P 〈 0.0001）, non-esterifies fatty acids （P = 0.02） and plasma testosterone （P = 0.005） levels were higher in the treatment group. Following mixing, activity （P 〈 0.0001 ） and plasma anti-oxidative capacity （P = 0.05） increased in the treatment compared to the control group. In spite of the above, dietary supplementation of CPE didn＇t reveal improvement of meat quality parameters by means of meat pH and shelf life It indicated that improved serum anti-oxidant capacity in the CPE calves was not sufficient to prevent the mixing effects on meat quality. A combined CPE concentration and mixing management should be examined in order to reduce mixing related effects on meat quality.

Understanding the drivers promoting sociality over solitariness in animal species is imperative for predicting future population trends and informing conservation and *** this study we investigate the social structure of a desert dwelling population of striped hyena Hyaena *** species is historically regarded as strictly solitary albeit being the least studied of the extant *** evidence regarding the frequency of social interactions sug-gests a revision of striped hyena social structure is *** hypothesized that striped hyena has a social structure that is more complex than expected for a strictly solitary *** that end,we deployed an array of camera-traps in a remote desert region in Israel,and compared observed frequencies of striped hyena co-occurrence against null models to test whether hyena co-occurred more than expected by *** adults were(re)captured by our camera-traps in 49 different instances over 83 tracking *** these,6 exhibited shared space-use around a scarce,isolated perennial water *** of them,co-occurred with other hyena(in 3 instan-ces)significantly more frequent than expected by chance(and that timing suggests reproduction is unlikely to be the driving factor).Our findings substantiate evidence of complex social structure in striped hyena,highlight the importance of a scarce resource in space use and sociality,and provide a baseline for future research of striped hyena social *** suggest that similar methods be employed to evaluate social structure in other"solitary species"to better under-stand their social dynamics.

The Change in Funerals in the Kibbutzim From the Early 20th Century

A funeral service in Judaism has undergone many changes over the past hundred years. Changes that were greatly influenced by settlement in kibbutzim in the Land of Israel and secular development in kibbutzim. This article reviews the development of funeral practices in kibbutzim in the 20th century. Customs from different kibbutzim and sources were examined and the influence of the sources on the non-Orthodox funeral customs was presented, despite the disconnection of the first non-Orthodox funeral customs. Thus, the changes in Kaddish and the first burial practices in the kibbutzim were presented and the influence and how they changed and returned to the connection to literature of Judaism despite the clear separation that remained. In other words, the non-Orthodox funeral customs derive from Jewish culture but not from the Jewish religion

The Public Health VS the People＇s Autonomy： Banning Smoking in Orthodox Jewish Community

Smoking is a worldwide problem. Research in recent years has shown us that smoking and second hand smoking can cause many diseases1. As a result of the understanding of the results of smoking, the house of legislator in Israel decided to legislate a law that people under the age of 18 cannot smoke and, a couple of years later, it decided to ban smoking in public places. The problem begins when the law is affecting the person＇s autonomy and the person＇s culture. More than four decades ago when the smoking habit began in Israel, no one knew what the influence would be. Now, although that information is available, the orthodox community in Israel is not exposed to the knowledge. Smoking in this community begins from Purima or from the Bar-Mitzvah3 and from the will of the young orthodox to rebel. This law raises a question： Is it ethical to deprive the young orthodox of the right to smoke？ Alternatively, is there a better way to stop the orthodox from smoking than only the regulation？ In this paper, the author will try to show that regulation alone will not help in the orthodox community, and we need to think on more options to make the orthodox more informed to smoking problems. The author thinks that the best way will be to educate the orthodox community from young age.

Effects of alkaline-electrolyzed and hydrogen-rich water,in a high-fat-diet nonalcoholic fatty liver disease mouse model

AIM To identify the effect of hydrogen-rich water(HRW) and electrolyzed-alkaline water(EAW) on high-fat-induced non-alcoholic fatty acid disease in *** Mice were divided into four groups:(1) Regular diet(RD)/regular water(RW);(2) high-fat diet(HFD)/RW;(3) RD/EAW; and(4) HFD/EAW. Weight and body composition were measured. After twelve weeks, animals were sacrificed, and livers were processed for histology and reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. A similar experiment was performed using HRW to determine the influence and importance of molecular hydrogen(H2) in EAW. Finally, we compared the response of hepatocytes isolated from mice drinking HRW or RW to palmitate *** EAW had several properties important to the study:(1) pH = 11;(2) oxidation-reduction potential of-495 mV; and(3) H2 = 0.2 mg/L. However, in contrast to other studies, there were no differences between the groups drinking EAW or RW in either the RD or HFD groups. We hypothesized that the null result was due to low H2 concentrations. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of RW and low and high HRW concentrations(L-HRW = 0.3 mg H2/L and H-HRW = 0.8 mg H2/L, respectively) in mice fed an HFD. Compared to RW and L-HRW, H-HRW resulted in a lower increase in fat mass(46% vs 61%), an increase in lean body mass(42% vs 28%), and a decrease in hepatic lipid accumulation(P < 0.01). Lastly, exposure of hepatocytes isolated from mice drinking H-HRW to palmitate overload demonstrated a protective effect from H2 by reducing hepatocyte lipid accumulation in comparison to mice drinking regular *** H2 is the therapeutic agent in electrolyzed-alkaline water and attenuates HFD-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in mice.

The City Public Transport Overlooked: Analysis of Effective Distances

Jerusalem is holy to the three main monotheistic religions. Hence Jerusalem is, from a touristic perspective, a world city. Jerusalem is also a highly segmented city. While Jerusalem may seem as an extreme case, it is not unique. Many cities attract large number of tourists to various widely renowned sites within them, in many cases with religious facets. Public transport systems are largely designed to address the demand of local residents. Yet, tourist flows often differ from the travel patterns of local residents, both temporally and spatially. This paper evaluates how Jerusalem’s public transport system serves the global tourist city. To this end, the study focuses on independent tourists, not package-tour tourists. Specifically, we analyze to what extent are the main tourist sites served by the public transportation system. To evaluate accessibility to tourist destinations we use GIS to conduct Least-Cost-Modeling. This methodology measures the effective, rather than the Euclidian distance to tourist destination. We find that the accessibility by public transportation to tourist destinations with high global importance, specifically Christian-religious sites is relatively low. In the final part of the paper we propose a number of explanations for that.

Survival of encapsulated islets: More than a membrane story

At present, proven clinical treatments but no cures are available for diabetes, a global epidemic with a huge economic burden. Transplantation of islets ofLangerhans by their infusion into vascularized organs is an experimental clinical protocol, the first approach to attain cure. However, it is associated with lifelong use of immunosuppressants. To overcome the need for immunosuppression, islets are encapsulated and separated from the host immune system by a permselective membrane. The lead material for this application is alginate which was tested in many animal models and a few clinical trials. This review discusses all aspects related to the function of transplanted encapsulated islets such as the basic requirements from a permselective membrane(e.g., allowable hydrodynamic radii, implications of the thickness of the membrane and relative electrical charge). Another aspect involves adequate oxygen supply, which is essential for survival/performance of transplanted islets, especially when using large retrievable macrocapsules implanted in poorly oxygenated sites like the subcutis. Notably, islets can survive under low oxygen tension and are physiologically active at > 40 Torr. Surprisingly, when densely crowded, islets are fully functional under hyperoxic pressure of up to 500 Torr(> 300% of atmospheric oxygen tension). The review also addresses an additional category of requirements for optimal performance of transplanted islets, named auxiliary technologies. These include control of inflammation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and the intra-capsular environment. The review highlights that curing diabetes with a functional bio-artificial pancreas requires optimizing all of these aspects, and that significant advances have already been made in many of them.

Visual guidelines and tutoring in pediatric urological surgery

Background:The aim of this prospective randomized study was to evaluate the impact of visual guidelines(picture book)and parents tutoring on pediatric urological surgery on parent's stress and anxiety,the number of postoperative contacts,and *** and methods:Following institutional ethical committee approval,a special picture book reflecting different stages of the convalescent period following multiple types of pediatric urological surgery was *** were randomly divided into 2 groups in which 33 parents in Group 1 received the picture book in addition to routine instructions prior to the surgery and 31 in Group 2 received only routine postoperative *** parents were asked to answer a questionnaire(Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale)regarding the level of anxiety before surgery and immediately after surgery in the recovery *** number of postoperative parent's calls,nonplaned emergency room visits,and complications were ***:No statistically significant difference in perioperative parental anxiety was found(p=0.88).The visual tutoring group had a significantly lower rate of emergency room admissions(6.6%vs.18.6%,p=0.0433),however parents from this group made a higher number of postoperative calls(9.9%vs.3.1%,p=0.38).Two(6.6%)from the tutoring group expressed their desire to omit visual counseling in future surgical preparation and 4(13.2%)did not have an *** satisfaction with regards to the preoperative counseling and information and the number of postoperative complications was similar in both ***:Visual tutoring does not add any value to parental anxiety but seems helpful in reducing postoperative emergency room *** parents preferred to exclude visual information from future preoperative counseling.

“There Are Many Cases That You Carry with You That Leave Scars”: Burnout and Secondary Trauma among Pediatric Residents in Routine and Covid Times

The current research joins previous studies in examining post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and burnout among healthcare workers. The research focuses on the experiences of pediatric residents working in an emergency department both in normal times and during the Covid pandemic. Research conducted prior to and during the Covid pandemic outbreak shows negative psychological effects among healthcare workers. Most of that research was conducted within the positivistic-quantitative paradigm. The current study is qualitative and focuses on pediatric residents who provide medical services to a unique population in a peripheral region of Israel, namely the Bedouin-Arab population. The research questions are the following: What characterizes pediatric residents’ work, in general and during the pandemic? Do they show signs of burnout and secondary trauma? How do they perceive their work with the Bedouin-Arab population, especially during the pandemic? The study, conducted within the phenomenological genre, included 14 pediatric residents in a large hospital in Israel’s periphery. Semi-structured clinical interviews were employed, in addition to questionnaires that examined PTSD and burnout to enhance the reliability of the findings. The results show that all residents reported stressful incidents in which patients’ physical integrity was threatened. The residents described the special nature of the medical cases they treated in routine times and during the pandemic outbreak, which stems mostly from the specific characteristics the population of Israel’s periphery. While at the early stages of the pandemic, the residents experienced reduced work pressure, they reported substantial difficulties later in the crisis, which intensified their sense of physical and emotional stress. Most residents reported feeling inadequately prepared for dealing with traumatic events. Polyethylene glycol 3350 based colon cleaning protocol: 2 d vs 4 d head to head comparison

AIM: To compare between 2 and 4 d colon cleansing protocols. METHODS: Children who were scheduled for colonoscopy procedure (2010-2012) for various medical reasons, were recruited from the pediatric gastroenterology clinic at Marshall University School of Medicine, Huntington, WV. Exclusion criteria were patients who were allergic to the medication used in the protocols [polyethylene glycol (PEG) 3350, Bisacodyl], or chil- dren with metabolic or renal diseases. Two PEG 3350 protocols for 4 d (A) and 2 d (B) were prescribed as previously described. A questionnaire describing the volume of PEG consumed, clinical data, and side effects were recorded. Colon preparation was graded by two observers according to previously described method. Main outcome measurements: Rate of adequate colon preparation. RESULTS: A total of 78 patients were considered for final calculation (group A: 40, group B: 38). Age and stool consistency at the last day was comparable in both groups, but the number of stools/day was significantly higher in group B (P = 0.001). Adequate colonpreparation was reached in 57.5% (A) and 73.6% (B), respectively (P = 0.206). Side effects were minimal and comparable in both groups. There was no difference in children's age, stool characteristics, or side effects between the children with adequate or inadequate colon preparation. Correlation and agreement between observers was excellent (Pearson correlation = 0.972, kappa = 1.0). CONCLUSION: No difference between protocols was observed, but the 2 d protocol was superior for its shorter time. Direct comparison between different colon cleansing protocols is crucial in order to establish the "gold standard" protocol for children.
