Directed x-rays produced in the interaction of sub-picosecond laser pulses of moderate relativistic intensity with plasma of near-critical density are investigated. Synchrotron-like (betatron) radiation occurs in the process of direct laser acceleration (DLA) of electrons in a relativisticlaser channel when the electrons undergo transverse betatron oscillations in self-generated quasi-static electric and magnetic fields. In anexperiment at the PHeLIX laser system, high-current directed beams of DLA electrons with a mean energy ten times higher than the ponderomotive potential and maximum energy up to 100 MeV were measured at 10^(19) W/cm^(2)laser intensity. The spectrum of directed x-raysin the range of 5–60 keV was evaluated using two sets of ross filters placed at 0°and 10°to the laser pulse propagation axis. The differential x-ray absorption method allowed for absolute measurements of the angular-dependent photon fluence. We report 10^(13) photons/sr withenergies >5 keV measured at 0°to the laser axis and a brilliance of 10^(21) photons s^(−1) mm^(−2) mrad−2(0.1%BW)−1. The angular distributionof the emission has an FWHM of 14°–16°. Thanks to the ultra-high photon fluence, point-like radiation source, and ultra-short emissiontime, DLA-based keV backlighters are promising for various applications in high-energy-density research with kilojoule petawatt-class laserfacilities.

Background:During human locomotion,a sufficiently stiff foot allows the ankle plantar flexors to generate large propulsive *** foot stiffness(e.g.,via a carbon plate)increases the ankle’s external moment arm in relation to the internal moment arm(i.e.,increasing gear ratio),reduces plantar flexor muscles’shortening velocity,and enhances muscle force *** contrast,when activation of the foot’s intrinsic muscles is impaired,there is a reduction in foot and ankle work and metatarsophalangeal joint *** speculated that the reduced capacity to actively control metatarsophalangeal joint stiffness may impair the gearing function of the foot at the ***:We used a tibial nerve block to examine the direct effects of the intrinsic foot muscles on ankle joint kinetics,in vivo medial gastrocnemius’musculotendinous dynamics,and ankle gear ratio on 14 participants during maximal vertical ***:Under the nerve block,the internal ankle plantar flexion moment decreased(p=0.004)alongside a reduction in external moment arm length(p=0.021)and ankle joint gear ratio(p=0.049)when compared to the non-blocked *** medial gastrocnemius muscle-tendon unit and fascicle velocity were not different between conditions,the Achilles tendon was shorter during propulsion in the nerve block condition(peir known role of regulating the energetic function of the foot,our data indicate that the intrinsic foot muscles also act to optimize ankle joint torque production and leverage during the propulsion phase of vertical jumping.

Uveitis is an intraocular inflammation with potentially sightthreatening *** anterior uveitis is a common extra-articular manifestation of juvenile idiopathic arthritis(JIA).It affects predominantly the iris and ciliary body[1].Less commonly there are cells in the vitreous(intermediate uveitis)or there may occasionally be panuveitis when inflammation involves the anterior chamber,vitreous,and retina and/or choroid,sometimes with cystoid macular edema[2].The reported incidence of uveitis in JIA overall is about 13%[3-5].The frequency of uveitis is strongly related to the type of *** is the most common type of JIA associated with childhood uveitis(30%),followed by polyarthritis rheumatoid factor(RF)-negative(20%)and psoriatic arthritis(10%)[6].Chronic anterior uveitis almost never occurs in children with systemic onset JIA or rheumatoid factor-positive polyarticular ***(symptomatic)anterior uveitis occurs in enthesitis related arthritis(eRA)[5].

This retrospective cohort study examined the relationship between self-reported participation in flexibility and muscular strengthening activities and the development of functional limitation(i.e.,once an individual has difficulty with or becomes unable to perform activities of daily living).Data were obtained from 1318 adults(mean age 49.59.7 years;98.7%Caucasian;14.9%female)enrolled in the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study from 1979 to 2004 and free of functional limitation at ***-back health surveys were used to prospectively determine incident functional *** in muscle-strengthening and flexibility activities was assessed via *** logistic regression analyses were used to determine the odds ratios(OR)and corresponding 95%confidence intervals for developing functional limitation during follow-up based on participation in general and specific categories of flexibility(‘Stretching’,‘Calisthenics’,or‘exercise Class’)and musclestrengthening activities(‘Calisthenics’,‘Free Weights’,‘Weight Training Machines’,or‘Other’).Overall,42.6%of the sample reported incident functional *** adjusting for potential confounders(e.g.,age,sex,cardiometabolic risk factors),those who reported performing muscle-strengthening activities in general(n=685)were at lower risk of developing functional limitation[OR=0.79(0.63–1.00)].In addition,the specific flexibility activities of stretching(n=491)and calisthenics(n=122)were associated with 24%and 38%decreased odds of incident functional limitation,*** muscle-strengthening,stretching,and calisthenics activities are prospectively associated with decreased risk of incident functional limitation in generally healthy,middleaged and older ***,both public health and rehabilitation programs should highlight the importance of flexibility and muscle-strengthening activities during adulthood to help preserve functional capacity.

Certain hexavalent chromium (Cr^(6+)) compounds when administered via inhalation at high doses have the potential to induce lung tumors in humans and experimental animals. Trivalent chromium (Cr^(3+)) is an essential human and animal nutrient at levels of 50 to 200 μg/day. Recent data have shown that the human body is able to reduce Cr^(6+) to Cr^(3+). This reduction occurs in bodily fluids such as gastric juice, epithelial lining fluid *** respiratory tract, blood, and other fluids. Secondary reduction occurs at the cellular level by the cytosol, mitochondria, and microsomes. Thus, at low levels of exposure hexavalent chromium ions are reduced befor the 6+ ions can interact with DNA unless the dose is sufficient to overwhelm the body's reduction capacity. This paper summarizes the available data concerning the reducing ability of the body and formulates the steps in the mechanism of cancer induction. These steps include: (1) only certain Cr^(6+) compounds have the capacity to interact with cellular components; (2) Cr^(6+) is reduced by body fluids and excess Cr^(6+) enters the cell (Cr^(3+) is poorly absorbed across membranes); (3) cellular organelles and the cytoplasm reduce Cr^(6+) to Cr^(3+); (4) excess Cr^(6+) can enter the nucleus; (5) Cr^(6+) reduction through 5+ and 4+ to 3+ has a potential to interact with the DNA molecule; and (6) if unrepaired, this DNA damage can lead to cancer induction. On the basis of current evidence Cr^(6+) has a threshold for carcinogenic potential in humans that is greater than the current TLV. 1990 Academic Press. Inc.
