Vertebrate pesticide risk assessment by indigenous communities in New Zealand

In New Zealand,the vertebrate pesticide sodium fluoroacetate(Compound 1080)is aerially applied in baits for control of the brush-tailed possum Trichosurus vulpecula(Kerr,1792).Maori,the indigenous people of New Zealand,have raised concerns about 1080 impacts on culturally-important ***,we outline two steps taken to help Maori assess 1080 ***,field research was undertaken to determine if naturally-occurring plants utilized by a Maori community for food and medicine would take up 1080 from *** baits were placed at the base of individual plants of two species,pikopiko(Asplenium bulbiferum)and karamuramu(Coprosma robusta).Plants were sampled at various times up to 56 days,and samples were analyzed for 1080 *** 1080 was detected in any of the pikopiko samples,whereas 1080 was detected in karamuramu,at a maximum concentration of 5 ppb after seven days,and 2.5 ppb after 14 *** concentration decreased to 0 at 28 days,indicating that 1080 was not *** results of the present study suggest there is negligible risk of humans being poisoned by consum-ing plants that have taken up 1080 from *** allay community concerns that minute concentrations of 1080 might influence the medicinal properties of plants,it is suggested that a withholding period of 30 days after 1080 control operations could be ***,after further consultation we undertook a review of the scientific literature relating to 1080 impacts on additional non-target species of cultural importance to *** information was presented on an interactive foodweb database that allowed the collection and presentation of a large volume of complex information about 1080 in a holistic and pictorial *** database was presented to many Maori communities throughout New Zealand,and feedback was overwhelmingly *** database is likely to play a key role in informing these communities about 1080,and is seen as an important new tool to help these communities

Value-added Impact of Geostationary Hyperspectral Infrared Sounders on Local Severe Storm Forecasts——via a Quick regional OSSE

Accurate atmospheric temperature and moisture information with high temporal/spatial resolutions are two of the key parameters needed in regional numerical weather prediction(NWP) models to reliably predict high-impact weather events such as local severe storms(LSSs). High spectral resolution or hyperspectral infrared(HIr) sounders from geostationary orbit(GEO) provide an unprecedented source of near time-continuous, three-dimensional information on the dynamic and thermodynamic atmospheric fields—an important benefit for nowcasting and NWP-based forecasting. In order to demonstrate the value of GEO HIr sounder radiances on LSS forecasts, a quick regional OSSE(Observing System Simulation Experiment)framework has been developed, including high-resolution nature run generation, synthetic observation simulation and validation, and impact study on LSS forecasts. results show that, on top of the existing LEO(low earth orbit) sounders, a GEO HIr sounder may provide value-added impact [a reduction of 3.56% in normalized root-mean-square difference(rMSD)] on LSS forecasts due to large spatial coverage and high temporal resolution, even though the data are assimilated every 6 h with a thinning of 60 km. Additionally, more frequent assimilations and smaller thinning distances allow more observations to be assimilated, and may further increase the positive impact from a GEO HIr sounder. On the other hand, with denser and more frequent observations assimilated, it becomes more difficult to handle the spatial error correlation in observations and gravity waves due to the limitations of current assimilation and forecast systems(such as a static background error covariance). The peak reduction of 4.6% in normalized rMSD is found when observations are assimilated every 3 h with a thinning distance of 30 km.

Objective To determine 3-amino-5-morpholinomethyl-2-oxazolidinone （AMOZ） residues released from protein bound AMOZ in animal tissues. Methods Polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies were produced in this study. A rapid, sensitive, and specific competitive direct enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （cdELISA） was developed. results rabbit polyclonal antibodies were used in the optimized cdELISA method, and exhibited negligible cross-reactivity with other compounds structurally related to AMOZ. The IC50 of the polycional antibody was 0.16 ng/mL The method limit of detection in four different types of animal and fish tissues was less than 0.06 μg/kg. recoveries ranged from 80% to 220% for fortified samples with the coefficient of variation values less than 15%. The results of the cdELISA method were in good agreement with the results from an established liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry confirmatory method used for AMOZ residues. Conclusion The cdELISA method developed in the present study is a convenient practical tool for screening large numbers of animal and fish tissue samples for the the detection of released protein bound AMOZ residues.

Evaluating the sensitivity of SArS-CoV-2 infection rates on college campuses to wastewater surveillance

As college campuses reopened in fall 2020,we saw a large-scale experiment unfold on the efficacy of various strategies to contain the SArS-CoV-2 *** individual surveillance testing via nasal swabs and/or saliva is among the measures that colleges are pursuing to reduce the spread of the virus on ***,some colleges are testing wastewater on their campuses for signs of infection,which can provide an early warning signal for campuses to locate COVID-positive ***,a representation of wastewater surveillance has not yet been incorporated into epidemiological models for college campuses,nor has the efficacy of wastewater screening been evaluated relative to traditional individual surveillance testing,within the structure of these ***,we implement a new model component for wastewater surveillance within an established epidemiological model for college *** use a hypothetical residential university to evaluate the efficacy of wastewater surveillance for maintaining low infection *** find that wastewater sampling with a 1-day lag to initiate individual screening tests,plus completing the subsequent tests within a 4-day period can keep overall infections within 5%of the infection rates seen with traditional individual surveillance *** results also indicate that wastewater surveillance can effectively reduce the number of false positive cases by identifying subpopulations for surveillance testing where infectious individuals are more likely to be *** a Monte Carlo risk analysis,we find that surveillance testing that relies solely on wastewater sampling can be fragile against scenarios with high viral reproductive numbers and high rates of infection of campus community members by outside *** results point to the practical importance of additional surveillance measures to limit the spread of the virus on campus and the necessity of a proactive response to the initial signs of outbreak.

Allometric relationships between primary size measures and sapwood area for six common tree species in snow-dependent ecosystems in the Southwest United States

High-elevation,snow-dependent,semiarid ecosystems across southwestern United States are expected to be vulnerable to climate change,including drought and fi re,with implications for various aspects of the water *** that end,much less is known about the dynamics of transpiration,an important component of the water cycle across this *** the individual-tree scale,transpiration is estimated by scaling mean sap fl ux density by the hydroactive sapwood area(SA).SA also remains a key factor in eff ectively scaling individual tree water-use to stand *** across large spatial scales is normally established by relating SA of a few trees to primary size measures,e.g.,diameter at breast height(DBH),tree height(H),or canopy diameter(CD).Considering the importance of SA in scaling transpiration,the primary objective of this study was therefore to establish six species-specifi c(aspen,maple,white fi r,ponderosa pine,Douglas fi r,Englemann spruce)allometric relationships between SA and three primary size measures(DBH,CD,or H)across two high-elevation,snow-dependent,semiarid ecosystems in New Mexico and *** on multiple statistical criteria(coeffi cient of determination,index of agreement,Nash–Sutcliff e effi-ciency)and ease of measurement in the forest,we identifi ed DBH as the primary independent variable for estimating SA across all *** on group regression analysis,we found allometric relationships to be signifi cantly(prent for the same species(ponderosa pine,Douglas-fi r)across diff erent ***,our allometric relationships provide a valuable database for estimating transpiration at diff erent spatial scales from sap fl ow data in some of our most vulnerable ecosystems.

It has recently been demonstrated experimentally that a turbulent plasma created by the collision of two inhomogeneous,asymmetric,weakly magnetized,laser-produced plasma jets can generate strong stochastic magnetic fields via the small-scale turbulent dynamo mechanism,provided the magnetic reynolds number of the plasma is sufficiently *** this paper,we compare such a plasma with one arising from two pre-magnetized plasma jets whose creation is identical save for the addition of a strong external magnetic field imposed by a pulsed magnetic field *** investigate the differences between the two turbulent systems using a Thomson-scattering diagnostic,x-ray selfemission imaging,and proton *** Thomson-scattering spectra and x-ray images suggest that the external magnetic field has a limited effect on the plasma dynamics in the *** the external magnetic field induces collimation of the flows in the colliding plasma jets and although the initial strengths of the magnetic fields arising from the interaction between the colliding jets are significantly larger as a result of the external field,the energies and morphologies of the stochastic magnetic fields post-amplification are *** conclude that,for turbulent laser-plasmas with supercritical magnetic reynolds numbers,the dynamo-amplified magnetic fields are determined by the turbulent dynamics rather than the seed fields or modest changes in the initial flow dynamics of the plasma,a finding consistent with theoretical expectations and simulations of turbulent dynamos.

Since the caecal microbiota of young broilers are not yet able to ferment the dietary fibre(DF)fraction of the feed to a large extent,increasing the accessibility of DF substrates along the gastrointestinal tract is crucial to benefit from the health stimulating metabolic end-products(*** acid)generated upon microbial DF ***,the present study aimed to evaluate the potential of reduced-particle size wheat bran(rPS-WB)and endoxylanases as feed additives to stimulate arabinoxylan(AX)hydrolysis and fermentation along the hindgut of young *** this end,rPS-WB and endoxylanase supplementation were evaluated in a 2×2 factorial design using a total of 256 male 1-d-old chicks(ross 308).Broilers were assigned to 4 dietary treatments:a basal wheat-based diet with(1)no feed additives(control,CTrL),(2)an endoxylanase(XYL;Econase XT 25 at 0.10 g/kg diet),(3)1%wheat bran with an average reduced particle size of 297μm(rPS-WB)and(4)an endoxylanase and 1%rPS-WB(rPS-WB+XYL).Each dietary treatment was replicated 8 times and on d 10 and 28,respectively,24 and 16 broilers per treatment group were euthanised to analyse AX degradation,short-chain fatty acid production and digesta viscosity in the ileum and *** receiving XYL in their diet showed increased AX solubilisation and fermentation at both d 10 and 28 compared to the CTrL group(PrPS-WB to the diet stimulated wheat AX utilisation by the primary AX degraders in the caecum at 10 d of age compared to the CTrL group,as observed by the high AX digestibility coefficient for the rPS-WB supplemented group at this young age(PrPS-WB supplementation lowered body-weight gains but increased butyric acid concentrations compared to the XYL and CTrL group(Prgistic effect for rPS-WB+XYL broilers was observed for AX hydrolysis and fermentation,these findings suggest that both additives can raise a dual benefit to the broiler as a butyrogenic effect and im
