Value-added Impact of Geostationary Hyperspectral Infrared Sounders on Local Severe Storm Forecasts——via a Quick Regional OSSE

Accurate atmospheric temperature and moisture information with high temporal/spatial resolutions are two of the key parameters needed in regional numerical weather prediction(nWP) models to reliably predict high-impact weather events such as local severe storms(LSSs). High spectral resolution or hyperspectral infrared(HIR) sounders from geostationary orbit(GEO) provide an unprecedented source of near time-continuous, three-dimensional information on the dynamic and thermodynamic atmospheric fields—an important benefit for nowcasting and nWP-based forecasting. In order to demonstrate the value of GEO HIR sounder radiances on LSS forecasts, a quick regional OSSE(Observing System Simulation Experiment)framework has been developed, including high-resolution nature run generation, synthetic observation simulation and validation, and impact study on LSS forecasts. Results show that, on top of the existing LEO(low earth orbit) sounders, a GEO HIR sounder may provide value-added impact [a reduction of 3.56% in normalized root-mean-square difference(RMSD)] on LSS forecasts due to large spatial coverage and high temporal resolution, even though the data are assimilated every 6 h with a thinning of 60 km. Additionally, more frequent assimilations and smaller thinning distances allow more observations to be assimilated, and may further increase the positive impact from a GEO HIR sounder. On the other hand, with denser and more frequent observations assimilated, it becomes more difficult to handle the spatial error correlation in observations and gravity waves due to the limitations of current assimilation and forecast systems(such as a static background error covariance). The peak reduction of 4.6% in normalized RMSD is found when observations are assimilated every 3 h with a thinning distance of 30 km.

Symptom presentation and evolution in the first 48 hours after injury are associated with return to play after concussion in elite Rugby Union

Background:Return to play(RTP)in elite rugby is managed using a 6-stage graduated RTP protocol,which can result in clearance to play within 1 week of injury.We aimed to explore how symptom,cognitive,and balance presentation and evolution during concussion screens 2 h(head injury assessment(HIA2)and 48 h(HIA3)after injury were associated with time to RTP)to identify whether a more conservative graduated RTP may be appropriate.Methods:A retrospective cohort study was conducted in 380 concussed rugby players from elite men’s rugby over 3 consecutive seasons.Players were classified as shorter or longer returns,depending on whether RTP occurred within 7 days(allowing them to be considered to play the match 1 week after injury)or longer than 8 days,respectively.Symptom,cognitive,and balance performance during screens was assessed relative to baseline(normal or abnormal)and to the preceding screen(improving or worsening).Associations between sub-test abnormalities and RTP time were explored using odds ratios(OR,longer vs.shorter).Median day absence was compared between players with abnormal or worsening results and those whose results were normal or improving.Results:Abnormal symptom results during screens 2 h and 48 h after concussion were associated with longer return time(HIA2:OR=2.21,95%confidence interval(95%CI):1.39-3.50;HIA3:OR=3.30,95%CI:1.89-5.75).Worsening symptom number or severity from the time of injury to 2 h and 48 h post-injury was associated with longer return(HIA2:OR=2.49,95%CI:1.36-4.58;HIA3:OR=3.34,95%CI:1.10-10.15).Median days absence was greater in players with abnormal symptom results at both HIA2 and HIA3.Cognitive and balance performance were not associated with longer return and did not affect median days absence.Conclusion:Symptom presentation and evolution within 48 h of concussion were associated with longer RTP times.This may guide a more conservative approach to RTP,while still adhering to individualized concussion management principles.

Limosilactobacillus mucosae FZJTZ26M3 prevents nAFLD in mice through modulation of lipid metabolism and gut microbiota dysbiosis

Lactobacillus are considered promising therapeutic methods for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(nAFLD).The effects of two strains of Ltmosilactobacillus mucosae on nAFLD were investigated in this study.Fourweek-old male C57BL/6J mice were divided into 4 groups(n=8 per group,Control,Model,FZJTZ26M3,FGSYC17L3).L.mucosae FZJTZ26M3 reduced the mice 's body weight,liver weight,and adipose tissue weight after 12 weeks of therapy.According to serum analysis,total cholesterol,triacylglycerol,and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol significantly decreased after L.mucosae FZJTZ26M3 intervention.Liver pathology showed that L.mucosae FZJTZ26M3 was effective to ameliorate lipid deposition in nAFLD mice.Additionally,the expression of the gene related to lipid metabolism in the liver and adipose tissue was analyzed,and the results indicated that L.mucosae FZJTZ26M3 could alleviate nAFLD by regulating lipid metabolism.Furthermore,the results of 16S rRnA gene sequencing revealed a drop in the relative abundance of Ruminococcaceae,which is linked to inflammation,but the relative abundance of a potential probiotic Akkermansia significantly increased after L.mucosae FZJTZ26M3 intervention.Generally,L.mucosae FZJTZ26M3 could be a candidate to prevent nAFLD.

Directed x-rays produced in the interaction of sub-picosecond laser pulses of moderate relativistic intensity with plasma of near-critical density are investigated. Synchrotron-like (betatron) radiation occurs in the process of direct laser acceleration (DLA) of electrons in a relativisticlaser channel when the electrons undergo transverse betatron oscillations in self-generated quasi-static electric and magnetic fields. In anexperiment at the PHELIX laser system, high-current directed beams of DLA electrons with a mean energy ten times higher than the ponderomotive potential and maximum energy up to 100 MeV were measured at 10^(19) W/cm^(2)laser intensity. The spectrum of directed x-raysin the range of 5–60 keV was evaluated using two sets of ross filters placed at 0°and 10°to the laser pulse propagation axis. The differential x-ray absorption method allowed for absolute measurements of the angular-dependent photon fluence. We report 10^(13) photons/sr withenergies >5 keV measured at 0°to the laser axis and a brilliance of 10^(21) photons s^(−1) mm^(−2) mrad−2(0.1%BW)−1. The angular distributionof the emission has an FWHM of 14°–16°. Thanks to the ultra-high photon fluence, point-like radiation source, and ultra-short emissiontime, DLA-based keV backlighters are promising for various applications in high-energy-density research with kilojoule petawatt-class laserfacilities.

Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis is a commensal bacterium that predominates in the infant gut， playing a critical role in both preventing foreign infections and facilitating immune development. This study aimed to explore the effects of B. longum subsp. infantis supplementation on interferon-beta (IFn-β) secretion and intestinal barrier improvement in growing mice. Female and male mice were orally administered either saline or B. longum subsp. infantis CCFM1269 or I5TI (1 × 109CFU/mice per day， n = 8) from 1-week-age until 3-， 4-， and 5-week-age. RnA sequencing analysis revealed that CCFM1269 exhibited potential antiviral capacity through increasing 2’-5’ oligoadenylate synthetase (OAS). Additionally， CCFM1269 supplementation significantly increased colonic IFn-β levels which combined with OAS in 3-week-old female and male mice by activating the TLR4-TRIF-dependent signaling pathway. However， this effect was not observed in 4- and 5-week-old mice. Furthermore， both CCFM1269 were found to modulate the gut microbiota composition and enhance the intestinal barrier function in 3-， 4-， and 5-week-old mice. In summary， the results of this study suggested that B. longum subsp. infantis CCFM1269 promoting intestinal barrier and releasing IFn-β in growing mice was in a strain-specific and time-dependent manner.

Due to their simple hardware,sensor nodes in IoT are vulnerable to attack,leading to data routing blockages or malicious tampering,which significantly disrupts secure data collection.An Intelligent Active Probing and Trace-back Scheme for IoT Anomaly Detection(APTAD)is proposed to collect integrated IoT data by recruiting Mobile Edge Users(MEUs).(a)An intelligent unsupervised learning approach is used to identify anomalous data from the collected data by MEUs and help to identify anomalous nodes.(b)Recruit MEUs to trace back and propose a series of trust calculation methods to determine the trust of nodes.(c)The last,the number of active detection packets and detection paths are designed,so as to accurately identify the trust of nodes in IoT at the minimum cost of the network.A large number of experimental results show that the recruiting cost and average anomaly detection time are reduced by 6.5 times and 34.33%respectively,while the accuracy of trust identification is improved by 20%.

True polar wander in the Earth system

True polar wander(TPW),or planetary reorientation,is the rotation of solid Earth(crust and mantle)about the liquid outer core in order to stabilize Earth’s rotation due to mass redistribution.Although TPW is well-documented on Earth presently with satellites and for multiple planets and moons in the Solar System,the prevalence of TPW in Earth history remains contentious.Despite a history of controversy,both the physical plausibility of TPW on Earth and an empirical basis for it are now undisputed.Lingering resistance to the old idea likely stems from the fact that,like plate tectonics,TPW may influence much of the Earth system,thus acknowledging its existence requires rethinking how many different datasets are interpreted.This review summarizes the development of TPW as a concept and provides a framework for future research that no longer regards TPW like a ghost process that may or may not exist,but as an integral part of the Earth system that can relate shallow and deep processes that are otherwise only mysteriously linked.Specifically,we focus on the temporal regularity of large TPW,and discuss its relationship with the supercontinent-megacontinent cycle based on previous studies.We suggest the assembly of megacontinents has a close linkage to large TPW.Meanwhile,supercontinent tenure and breakup have a close linkage to fast TPW.The effects of TPW on sea level changes,paleoclimate,biological diversity,and other facets of the Earth system are presented and require interdisciplinary tests in the future.

Context-dependent integrated stress resistance promotes a global invasive pest

In nature,insects concurrently face multiple environmental stressors,a sce-nario likely increasing with climate change.Integrated stress resistance(ISR)thus often improves fitness and could drive invasiveness,but how physiological mechanisms influ-ence invasion has lacked examination.Here,we investigated cross-tolerance to abiotic stress factors which may influence range limits in the South American tomato pinworm a global invader that is an ecologically and socially damaging crop pest.Specifically,we tested the effects of prior rapid cold-and heat-hardening(RCH and RHH),fasting,and desiccation on cold and heat tolerance traits,as well as starvation and desiccation sur-vivability between T.absoluta life stages.Acclimation effects on critical thermal minima(CT_(min))and maxima(CT_(max))were inconsistent,showing significantly deleterious effects of RCH on adult CT_(max) and CT_(min) and,conversely,beneficial acclimation effects of RCH on larval CT_(min).While no beneficial effects of desiccation acclimation were recorded for desiccation tolerance,fasted individuals had significantly higher survival in adults,whereas fasting negatively affected larval tolerances.Furthermore,fasted and desiccation acclimated adults had significantly higher starvation tolerance,showing strong evidence for cross-tolerance.Our results show context-dependent ISR traits that may promote T.absoluta fitness and competitiveness.Given the frequent overlapping occurrence of these divergent stressors,ISR reported here may thus partly elucidate the observed rapid global spread of T.absoluta into more stressful environments than expected.This information is vital in determining the underpinnings of multistressor responses,which are fundamental in forecasting species responses to changing environments and management responses.

Phage-mediated horizontal gene transfer and its implications for the human gut microbiome

Horizontal gene transfer(HGT)in the microbiome has profound consequences for human health and disease.The spread of antibiotic resistance genes,virulence,and pathogenicity determinants predominantly occurs by way of HGT.Evidence exists of extensive horizontal transfer in the human gut microbiome.Phage transduction is a type of HGT event in which a bacteriophage transfers non-viral DnA from one bacterial host cell to another.The abundance of tailed bacteriophages in the human gut suggests that transduction could act as a significant mode of HGT in the gut microbiome.Here we review in detail the known mechanisms of phage-mediated HGT,namely specialized and generalized transduction,lateral transduction,gene-transfer agents,and molecular piracy,as well as methods used to detect phage-mediated HGT,and discuss its potential implications for the human gut microbiome.
