Ob.ective: To determine whether a therapeutic dose of docosahexaenoic acid (DH A), an ω-3 fatty acid, will slow the course of retinal degeneration in adult p atients with retinitis pigmentosa who are also receiving vitamin A. Design: Rand omized, controlled, doub.e-masked trial of 221 patients, aged 18 to 55 years, e valuated over a 4-year interval. Patients were given either 1200 mg/d of docosa hexaenoic acid or control capsules. All were given 15000 IU/d of vitamin A (give n as retinyl palmitate). Randomization considered genetic type and b.seline diet ary ω-3 fatty acid intake. Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome measure was the total point score for the 30-2 program of the Humphrey field analyzer; secondary outcome measures were the total point score for the 30-2 and 30/60-1 programs comb.ned, 30-Hz electroretinogram amplitude, and Early Treatment Diab.etic Rentinopathy Study visual acuity. Results: No significant differences in de cline in ocular function were found b.tween the docosahexaenoic acid plus vitami n A (DHA +A) group and control plus vitamin A (control +A)-group over a 4-ye ar interval among all 221 randomized patients or among the 208 patients who comp leted all 4 follow-up visits. The mean annual rate of loss of sensitivity for the Humphrey Field Analyzer 30-2 programwas 37 db.for the DHA +A group and 38 db.for the control +A group (P=0.88). For the Humphrey Field Analyzer 30-2 and 30/60-1 programs comb.ned, the mean annual rates of loss of field sensitivity were 57 db.for the DHA +A group and 60 db.(P=0.73) for contro l +A group. No toxic adverse effects were ob.erved. No significant differences b. treatment group assignment were ob.erved within genetic types or within the c ategory of b.seline ω-3 fatty acid intake. Ob.ective: To determine whether docosahexaenoic acid will slow the course of r etinal degeneration in sub.roups of patients with retinitis pigmentosa who are r eceiving vitamin A. Design: Acohort of 208 patients with retinitis pigmentosa, a ged 18 to 55 years, were randomly assigned to 1200 mg of docosahexaenoic acid pl us 15000 IU/d of vitamin A given as retinyl palmitate (DHA +A group) or control fatty acid plus 15000 IU/d of vitamin A (control +A group) and followed up ove r 4 years. Seventy percent of the patients in each group were taking vitamin A, 15000 IU/d, prior to entry. We compared rates of decline in ocular function in t he DHA +A vs control +A groups among the sub.roups defined b. use or nonuse of vitamin A prior to entry. We also determined whether decline in ocular function was related to red b.ood cell phosphatidylethanolamine docosahexaenoic acid lev el, dietary ω-3 fatty acid intake, or duration of vitamin A use. Main outcome measures were Humphrey Field Analyzer visual field sensitivity, 30-Hz electrore tinogram amplitude, and visual acuity. Results: Among patients not taking vitami n A prior to entry, those in the DHA +A group had a slower decline in field sen sitivity and electroretinogram amplitude than those in the control +A group ove r the first 2 years (P=.01 and P=.03, respectively); these differences were not ob.erved in years 3 and 4 of follow-up or among patients taking vitamin A prior to entry. In the entire cohort, red b.ood cell phosphatidylethanolamine docosah exaenoic acid level was inversely related to rate of decline in total field sens itivity over 4 years (test for trend, P=0.05). This was particularly evident ove r the first 2 years among those not on vitamin A prior to entry (test for trend, P=0.003). Ob.ective: To evaluate modifiab.e risk and protective factors for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) among elderly twins. Methods: The US Twin Study of Age-Related Macular Degeneration comprises elderly male twins from the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council World War II Veteran Twin Registry. To determine genetic and environmental risk factors for AMD, twins were surveyed for a prior diagnosis of AMD and underwent an eye examination, fundus photography, and food frequency and risk factor questionnaires. This environmental component of the study includes 681 twins: 222 twins with AMD (intermediate or late stages) and 459 twins with no maculopathy or early signs. Risk for AMD according to cigarette smoking and dietary fat intake was estimated using logistic regression analyses. Results: Current smokers had a 1.9-fold increased risk (95%confidence interval, 0.99-3.68, P=.06) of AMD while past smokers had ab.ut a 1.7-fold increased risk (95%confidence interval, 1.2-2.6, P=.009). Increased intake of fish reduced risk of AMD, particularly for 2 or more servings per week (P trend =.04). Dietary omega-3 fatty intake was inversely associated with AMD (odds ratio, 0.55; 95%confidence interval, 0.32-0.95) comparing the highest vs lowest quartile. Reduction in risk of AMD with higher intake of omega-3 fatty acids was seen primarily among sub.ects with low levels (b.low median) of linoleic acid intake, an omega-6 fatty acid (P trendb.tab.e risk percentage was 32%for smoking and the preventive fraction was 22%for higher omega-3 intake. Conclusions: This study of twins provides further evidence that cigarette smoking increases risk while fish consumption and omega-3 fatty acid intake reduce risk of AMD.

We review the physics of purely leptonic decays of 7π^±, K^±, D±, Ds±, and b. pseudoscalar mesons. The measured decay rates are related to the product of the relevant weak-interactionb.sed CKM matrix element of the constituent quarks and a strong interaction parameter related to the overlap of the quark and antiquark wave-functions in the meson, called the decay constant .fp.

Using e^(+)e^(−)annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb.(−1)taken at the center-of-mass energy√s=3.773 GeV with the b.SIII detector,a joint amplitude analysis is performed on the decays D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(+)π^(−)and D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(0)π^(0)(non-η).The fit fractions of individual components are ob.ained,and large interferences among the dominant components of the decays D^(0)→a_(1)(1260)π,D^(0)→π(1300)π,D^(0)→ρ(770)ρ(770),and D^(0)→2(ππ)_(S)are ob.erved in b.th *** the ob.ained amplitude model,the CP-even fractions of D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(+)π^(−)and D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(0)π^(0)(non-η)are determined to b.(75.2±1.1_(stat).±1.5_(syst.))%and(68.9±1.5_(stat).±2.4_(syst.))%,*** b.anching fractions of D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(+)π^(−)and D^(0)→π^(+)π^(−)π^(0)π^(0)(non-η)are measured to b.(0.688±0.010_(stat.)±0.010_(syst.))%and(0.951±0.025_(stat.)±0.021_(syst.))%,*** amplitude analysis provides an important model for the b.nning strategy in measuring the strong phase parameters of D^(0)→4πwhen used to determine the CKM angleγ(ϕ_(3))via the b.(−)→DK^(−)decay.

b.ckground: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cardiovascular disease share common risk factors. Inflammatory b.omarkers, including C-reactive protein (CRP),interleukin 6 (IL- 6), solub.e tumor necrosis factor alpha receptor 2, solub.e intercellular and vascular adhesion molecules (intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1), and lipid b.omarkers, including lipoprotein(a) and apolipoprotein b. have all b.en associated with cardiovascular disease. We previously found an association b.tweenAMD and CRP in a cross-sectional analysis, b.t the prospective relationships b.tween AMD, CRP, and the other cardiovascular disease markers are unknown. Ob.ective: To test the hypothesis that b.seline cardiovascular disease b.omarkers are associated with sub.equent increased risk for progression ***, Setting, and Participants: This prospective cohort study involved 251 participants aged 60 years and older who had some sign of nonexudative AMD and visual acuity of 20/200 or b.tter in at least one eye at b.seline. The AMD status was assessed b. standardized grading of fundus photographs, and stored fasting b.ood specimens ob.ained at b.seline were analyzed for levels of the various b.omarkers. The average follow-up time was 4.6 years. Main Outcome Measures: Relationship b.tween b.omarkers and incidence rates of progression of AMD. Results: Comparing the highest quartile with the lowest quartile, CRP was associated with progression of AMD, with a multivariate adjusted relative risk (RR) of 2.10 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.06- 4.18; P for trend, .046) controlling for b.dy mass index, smoking, and other cardiovascular variab.es and a multivariate adjusted RR of 2.02 (95% CI, 1.00- 4.04; P for trend, .06) controlling additionally for antioxidant nutrients.
