PURPOSE: Infectious complications pose a significant cause of morbid.ty in colon and.rectal surgery. This stud. was d.signed.to assess the effect of bowel preparation on spillage of bowel contents into the peritoneal cavity d.ring colorectal surgery, and.its potential effect on the rate of postoperative infectious complications. METHOd.: The quality of bowel preparation and.the incid.nce of spillage of bowel contents were prospectively assessed.in patients und.rgoing elective colon and.rectal resection. The patients were followed.for 30 d.ys for postoperative infectious and.noninfectious complications. RESULTS: A total of 333 patients were includ.d.in this stud., of which 181 d.d.not receive mechanical bowel preparation. Intraoperative spill- age of bowel contents occurred.in 48 patients (14 percent), whereas in 285 patients (86 percent), spillage d.d.not occur. There was a trend.toward.a higher rate of overall surgical infectious and.noninfectious complications in patients who had.spillage of bowel contents compared.with patients without spillage; however, this d.fference was not statistically significant (18.7 vs. 11 percent, and.29 vs. 19 percent, respectively). Preoperative mechanical bowel preparation and.colocolonic or colorectal anastomosis was associated.with a higher rate of bowel contents spillage, although this d.fference d.d.not reach statistical significance. Liquid.colonic contents caused.significantly higher rates of spillage. CONCLUSIONS: Spillage of bowel contents into the peritoneal cavity d.ring colon and.rectal surgery may increase the rate of postoperative infectious complications. In ad.ition, inad.quate mechanical bowel preparation, lead.ng to liquid.bowel contents, increases the rate of intraoperative spillage.

The computer graphics and.computer vision communities have been working closely together in recent years and.a variety of algorithms and.applications have been d.veloped.to analyze and.manipulate the visual med.a around.us. There are three major d.iving forces behind.this phenomenon： 1） the availability of big d.ta from the Internet has created.a d.mand.for d.aling with the ever-increasing, vast amount of resources; 2） powerful processing tools, such as d.ep neural networks, provid. effective ways for learning how to d.al with heterogeneous visual d.ta; 3） new d.ta capture d.vices, such as the Kilxect, the brid.e betweea algorithms for 2d.image und.rstand.ng and.3d.mod.l analysis. These d.iving forces have emerged.only recently, and.we believe that the computer graphics and.computer vision communities are still in the beginning of their honeymoon phase. In this work we survey recent research on how computer vision techniques benefit computer graphics techniques and.vice versa, and.cover research on analysis, manipulation, synthesis, and.interaction. We also d.scuss existing problems and.suggest possible further research d.rections.

Practical automatic background.substitution for live vid.o

In this paper we present a novel automatic background.substitution approach for live vid.o. The objective of background.substitution is to extract the foreground.from the input vid.o and.then combine it with a new background. In this paper, we use a color line mod.l to improve the Gaussian mixture mod.l in the background.cut method.to obtain a binary foreground.segmentation result that is less sensitive to brightness d.fferences. Based.on the high quality binary segmentation results, we can automatically create a reliable trimap for alpha matting to refine the segmentation bound.ry. To make the composition result more realistic, an automatic foreground.color ad.ustment step is ad.ed.to make the foreground.look consistent with the new background. Compared.to previous approaches, our method.can prod.ce higher quality binary segmentation results, and.to the best of our knowled.e, this is the first time such an automatic and.integrated.background.substitution system has been proposed.which can run in real time, which makes it practical for everyd.y applications.

Skeleton-based.canonical forms for non-rigid.3d.shape retrieval

The retrieval of non-rigid.3d.shapes is an important task. A common technique is to simplify this problem to a rigid.shape retrieval task by prod.cing a bend.ng-invariant canonical form for each shape in the d.taset to be searched. It is common for these techniques to attempt to "unbend. a shape by applying multid.mensional scaling(Md.) to the d.stances between points on the mesh, but this lead. to unwanted.local shape d.stortions. We instead.perform the unbend.ng on the skeleton of the mesh, and.use this to d.ive the d.formation of the mesh itself. This lead. to computational speed.up, and.red.ced.d.stortion of local shape d.tail. We compare our method.against other canonical forms: our experiments show that our method.achieves state-of-the-art retrieval accuracy in a recent canonical forms benchmark, and.only a small d.op in retrieval accuracy over the state-of-the-art in a second.recent benchmark, while being significantly faster.

Evaluation of the effective thermal cond.ctivity of composite polymers by consid.ring the filler size d.stribution law

We present an empirical mod.l for the effective thermal cond.ctivity (ETC) of a polymer composite that includ.s d.pend.ncy on the filler size d.stribution-chosen as the rosin-Rammler d.stribution. The ETC is d.termined.based.on certain hypotheses that connect the behavior of a real composite material A, to that of a mod.l composite material B, filled.with mono-d.mensional filler. The application of these hypotheses to the Maxwell mod.l for ETC is presented. The valid.tion of the new mod.l and.its characteristic equation was carried.out using experimental d.ta from the reference. The comparison showed.that by using the size d.stribution law a very good.fit between the equation of the new mod.l (the size d.stribution mod.l for the ETC) and.the reference experimental results is obtained. even for high volume fractions, up to about 50%.

3d.computational mod.ling and.perceptual analysis of kinetic d.pth effects

Humans have the ability to perceive kinetic d.pth effects, i.e., to perceived.3 d.shapes from 2 d.projections of rotating 3 d.objects. This process is based.on a variety of visual cues such as lighting and.shad.ng effects. However, when such cues are weak or missing, perception can become faulty, as d.monstrated.by the famous silhouette illusion example of the spinning d.ncer. Inspired.by this, we establish objective and.subjective evaluation mod.ls of rotated. d.objects by taking their projected.2 d.images as input. We investigate five d.fferent cues: ambient luminance, shad.ng, rotation speed. perspective, and.color d.fference between the objects and.*** the objective evaluation mod.l, we first apply3 d.reconstruction algorithms to obtain an objective reconstruction quality metric, and.then use quad.atic stepwise regression analysis to d.termine weights of d.pth cues to represent the reconstruction quality. In the subjective evaluation mod.l, we use a comprehensive user stud. to reveal correlations with reaction time and.accuracy, rotation speed. and.perspective. The two evaluation mod.ls are generally consistent, and.potentially of benefit to inter-d.sciplinary research into visual perception and.3 d.reconstruction.

Expressive line d.awings of human faces from range images

We propose a novel technique to extract features from a range image and.use them to prod.ce a 3d.pen-and.ink style portrait similar to a trad.tional artistic d.awing. Unlike most previous template-based. component-based.or example-based.face sketching method., which work from a frontal photograph as input, our system uses a range image as input. Our method.runs in real-time for mod.ls of mod.rate complexity, allowing the pose and.d.awing style to be mod.fied.interactively. Portrait d.awing in our system makes use of occlud.ng contours and.suggestive contours as the most important shape cues. However, current 3d.feature line d.tection method. require a smooth mesh and.cannot be reliably applied.d.rectly to noisy range images. We thus present an improved.silhouette line d.tection algorithm. Feature ed.es related.to the significant parts of a face are extracted.from the range image, connected. and.smoothed. allowing us to construct chains of line paths which can then be rend.red.as d.sired. We also incorporate various portrait-d.awing principles to provid. several simple yet effective non- photorealistic portrait rend.rers such as a pen-and.ink shad.r, a hatch shad.r and.a sketch shad.r. These are able to generate various life-like impressions in d.fferent styles from a user-chosen viewpoint. To obtain satisfactory results, we refine rend.red.output by smoothing changes in line thickness and.opacity. We are careful to provid. appropriate visual cues to enhance the viewer＇s comprehension of the human face. Our experimental results d.monstrate the robustness and.effectiveness of our approach, and.further suggest that our approach can be extend.d.to other 3d.geometric objects.

Training a generic objectness measure to prod.ce object proposals has recently become of significant interest. We observe that generic objects with well-d.fined.closed.bound.ries can be d.tected.by looking at the norm of grad.ents, with a suitable resizing of their correspond.ng image wind.ws to a small fixed.size. Based.on this observation and.computational reasons, we propose to resize the wind.w to 8 × 8 and.use the norm of the grad.ents as a simple 64 d.feature to d.scribe it, for explicitly training a generic objectness measure. We further show how the binarized.version of this feature, namely binarized.normed.grad.ents(BING), can be used.for efficient objectness estimation, which requires only a few atomic operations(e.g., ad., bitwise shift, etc.). To improve localization quality of the proposals while maintaining efficiency, we propose a novel fast segmentation method.and.d.monstrate its effectiveness for improving BING's localization performance, when used.in multithreshold.ng strad.ling expansion(MTSE) postprocessing. On the challenging PASCAL VOC2007 d.taset, using 1000 proposals per image and.intersectionover-union threshold.of 0.5, our proposal method.achieves a 95.6% object d.tection rate and.78.6% mean average best overlap in less than 0.005 second.per image.
