Novel electrode structure in a DBD reactor applied to the degradation of phenol in aqueous solution

Phenol degradation experimental results are presented in a similar wastewater aqueous solution using a non-thermal plasma reactor in a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge. The novelty of the work is that one of the electrodes of the reactor has the shape of a hollow screw which shows an enhanced efficiency compared with a traditional smooth structure. The experimentation was carried out with gas mixtures of 90% Ar-10% O2, 80% At-20% 02 and 0% Ar-100% 02. After one hour of treatment the removal efficiency was 76%, 92%, and 97%, respectively, assessed with a gas chromatographic mass spectrometry technique. For both reactors used, the ozone concentration was measured. The screw electrode required less energy, for all gas mixtures, than the smooth electrode, to maintain the same ozone concentration. On the other hand, it was also observed that in both electrodes the electrical conductivity of the solution changed slightly from ,-0.0115 S m^-1 up to -0.0430 S m^-1 after one hour of treatment. The advantages of using the hollow screw electrode structure compared with the smooth electrode were：（1） lower typical power consumption, （2） the generation of a uniform plasma throughout the reactor benefiting the phenol degradation, （3） a relatively lower temperature of the aqueous solution during the process, and （4） the plasma generation length is larger.

A new configuration of a resonant full-bridge flying capacitor multicell inverter has been designed and constructed with the aim of achieving an extended output voltage frequency range with low harmonic distortion and reduced semiconductor commutation losses. This configuration was tested as a power supply for two different coaxial dielectric barrier discharge reactors, one of them employed for electric characterization and the other one for inorganic compound elimination in an aqueous solution. Two different gas mixtures, 90% Ar-10% 02 and 80% Ar-20% 02, were individually supplied during the experiments; the results showed a high- efficiency removal of meta-cresol （m-cresol） to the order of 98%, which was obtained by adding more oxygen to the plasma gas mixture.

This paper presents a parameter estimation technique for the hot-spot thermal model of power transformers.The proposed technique is based on the unscented formulation of the Kalman filter,jointly considering the state variables and parameters of the dynamic thermal model.A two-stage estimation technique that takes advantage of different loading conditions is developed,in order to increase the number of parameters which can be identified.Simulation results are presented,which show that the observable parameters are estimated with an error of less than 3%.The parameter estimation procedure is mainly intended for factory testing,allowing the manufacturer to enhance the thermal model of power transformers and,therefore,its customers to increase the lifetime of these assets.The proposed technique could be additionally considered in field applications if the necessary temperature measurements are available.

Objective The purpose of this study is to examine the regional distribution of the pediatric surgery workforce and the expected local demand for pediatric surgical procedures in Brazil.Methods We collected data on the pediatric surgical workforce,surgical volume,Gross Domestic Product per capita,and mortality for gastrointestinal tract malformations(MGITM)across the different regions of Brazil for 2019.Results Data from the Federal Medical Council reported 1515 pediatric surgery registries in Brazil,corresponding to 1414 pediatric surgeons(some pediatric surgeons are registered in more than one state),or 2.4 pediatric surgeons per 100000 children 14 years of age and younger.There were 828 men and 586 women.The mean age was 51.5±12.8 years,and the mean time from graduation was 3.4±5.7 years.There is a higher concentration of pediatric surgeons in the wealthier Central-West,South,and Southeast regions.Individual surgical volume ranged from 88 to 245 operations/year(average 146 operations/year)depending on the region.Of these,only nine(6.1%)were high-complexity(including neonatal)operations.MGITM tended to be higher in the poorer North and Northeast regions than in other regions of Brazil.Conclusions Our findings suggest significant disparities in the surgical workforce and workload across Brazil related to socioeconomic status.Regions with an increased surgical workforce were associated with lower MGITM.The average number of complex operations performed annually by each pediatric surgeon was considerably low.Strategic investment and well-defined health policies are imperative to enhance the quality of surgical care in the different regions of Brazil.

An earthquake called the MW7.2“El Mayor Cucapah”earthquake on April 4,2010 has been analyzed for seismic precursor.The changes in the lineament system concerning its pattern and time intervals were analyzed during the earthquake preparation period and occurrence using the automated lineament detection method.The Landsat 5 TM images were processed using LESSA and ADALGEO software obtaining similar results.The statistical analysis revealed the stress accumulation due to plate interaction during earthquake formation.The study shows that the number of extracted lineaments changes rapidly about 23 months before the earthquake,and the systems return to the initial stage after 23 months.Most lineaments coincide with the extension of the San Andreas Fault as NW direction is the dominant trend.Thus,it can be concluded that the featural changes within the Rose diagram corresponding to the different strokes direction along with oriented elongation lines as disclosed in the present study using satellite images could be identified as a mid-term and/or short-term precursors of the earthquake.However,even though the dynamism of the El Mayor Cucapah earthquake is found in the extracted lineaments,it is possible to isolate more significant earthquakes even if new ones appear near the zone.Moreover,using two algorithms for lineament detection allows for the tectonics to corroborate the obtained lineaments and dynamism.

Vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)was discovered by its angiogenic activity.However,during evolution,it appeared earlier as a neurotrophic factor required for the development of the nervous system in invertebrates lacking a circulatory system.We aimed at reviewing recent evidence indicating that VEGF has neuroprotective effects in neurons exposed to a variety of insults.Of particular interest is the link established between VEGF and motoneurons,especially after the design of the VEGFδ/δmutant mice.These mice are characterized by low levels of VEGF and develop muscle weakness and motoneuron degeneration resembling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.The administration of VEGF through several routes to animal models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis delays motor impairment and motoneuron degeneration and increases life expectancy.There are new recent advances in the role of VEGF in the physiology of motoneurons.Our experimental aims use the extraocular(abducens)motoneurons lesioned by axotomy as a model for studying VEGF actions.Axotomized abducens motoneurons exhibit severe alterations in their discharge activity and a loss of synaptic boutons.The exogenous administration of VEGF to axotomized abducens motoneurons,either from the transected nerve or intraventricularly,fully restores the synaptic and discharge properties of abducens motoneurons,despite being axotomized.In addition,when an anti-VEGF neutralizing antibody is delivered from the muscle to intact,uninjured abducens motoneurons,these cells display alterations in their discharge pattern and a loss of synaptic boutons that resemble the state of axotomy.All these data indicate that VEGF is an essential neurotrophic factor for motoneurons.

The present analysis provided the quality assessment of 65 Continuous Operating Reference Stations(CORS) situated in and around Mexico using the data of about ten years(January 2010 to January 2020).To accomplish the assessment,we considered 4 quality indexes for performing the quality check,incluing the multipath effect on L1 and L2 bands,signal-to-noise ratio in both bands,cycle slips,and integrity.Meanwhile,a new reference parameter named regio nal values for Mexico(RVM) was calculated for the stations situated in Mexico.Additionally,an exhaustive analysis of the quality indicators in the worst and best cases was performed.The signal degradation was proved by a long-term time series and cru stal defo rmation analysis in GAMIT/GLOBK platform.The results showed a stro ng correlation between integrity,cycle slips and daily observations time,and the multipath effect is strong in the case of outdated systems.The study indicates that the estimated quality indexes and values could be the basis for establishing new CORS in Mexico,and the errors corrections which cannot be mitigated in the postprocessing stage would greatly help utilize the data for different scientific applications.The results were supported by deformation analysis in part of Baja California peninsula in Mexico indicating northern and eastern velocity vector of -3.08±0.02 mm/yr,-7.85±0.02 mm/yr and-0.07±0.03 mm/yr,-9.33±0.02 mm/yr respectively at MPR1 and INEG stations.

Invisibility or unhearability cloaks have been made possible by using metamaterials enabling light or sound to fow around obstacle without the trace of refections or shadows.Metamaterials are known for being fexible building units that can mimic a host of unusual and extreme material responses,which are essential when engineering artifcial material properties to realize a coordinate transforming cloak.Bending and stretching the coordinate grid in space require stringent material parameters;therefore,small inaccuracies and inevitable material losses become sources for unwanted scattering that are decremental to the desired efect.Tese obstacles further limit the possibility of achieving a robust concealment of sizeable objects from either radar or sonar detection.By using an elaborate arrangement of gain and lossy acoustic media respecting parity-time symmetry,we built a one-way unhearability cloak able to hide objects seven times larger than the acoustic wavelength.Generally speaking,our approach has no limits in terms of working frequency,shape,or size,specifcally though we demonstrate how,in principle,an object of the size of a human can be hidden from audible sound.

Background:Leprosy can be cured,but physical disability(PD)as a result of the infection can progress in the postrelease from treatment phase.This study evaluated the likelihood of,and factors associated with,the progression of the PD grade post-release from treatment among leprosy patients treated in Cáceres-MT,Brazil in the period 2000 to 2017.Methods:A retrospective cohort study and survival analysis were performed in the hyperendemic municipality of Cáceres in the state of Mato Grosso.The study population consisted of newly diagnosed leprosy patients released from treatment between January 1,2000 and December 31,2017.The main outcome was the progression of the PD grade with regard to probability and time;and the evaluated covariates included clinical,operational and demographic variables.The Cox proportional risk model was used to estimate the risk ratio(Hazard Ratios)of the covariates.Both an univariate and a multivariate analysis were implemented,with 95%confidence intervals.Results:The mean time for progression of the PD grade was 162 months for PB and 151 months for MB leprosy patients.The survival curve showed that 15 years after the release from treatment,the probability of PD grade progression was 35%,with no difference between PB and MB or age groups.Leprosy reactions and registered medical complaints of any kind during treatment were identified as risk factors with Hazard Ratios of 1.6 and 1.8 respectively.Conclusions:people released from treatment as cured of leprosy are susceptible to worsening of the PD,especially those who have had complications during multi-drug therapy treatment.This indicates that leprosy patients should be periodically monitored,even after the successful completion of multidrug therapy.
