Purpose： The present study investigated the effects of 16 weeks of small-volume, small-sided soccer training soccer group （SG, n = 13） and oscillating whole-body vibration training vibration group （VG, n = 17） on body composition, aerobic fitness, and muscle Pcr kinetics in healthy inactive premenopausal women in comparison with an inactive control group （cO, n = 14）. Methods： Training for SG and VG consisted of twice-weekly 15-min sessions with average heart rates （HRs） of ～ 155 and 90 bpm respectively. Pre- and post-measurements of body composition （DXA）, phosphocreatine （Pcr） on- and off-kinetics, and HR measurements during stand- ardised submaximal exercise were performed. Results： After 16 weeks of training in SG, fat percentage was lowered （p = 0.03） by 1.7%±2.4% from 37.5% ± 6.9% to 35.8% ± 6.2% and the Pcr decrease in the quadriceps during knee-extension ramp exercise was attenuated （4% ± 8%, p = 0.04）, with no changes in VG or cO （time- group effect： p=0.03 and p = 0.03）. Submaximal exercise HR was also reduced in SG after 16 weeks of training （6%± 5% of HRmax, p = 0.01）. conclusion： Short duration soccer training for 16 weeks appears to be sufficient to induce favourable changes in body composition and indicators of aerobic fitness and muscle oxidative capacity in untrained premenopausal women.

BAcKGROUND Recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma(Hcc)following liver transplantation(LT)has a devastating influence on recipients’survival;however,the risk of recur-rence is not routinely *** stratification is vital with a long LT waiting time,as that could influence the recurrence despite strict listing *** This study aims to identify predictors of recurrence and develop a novel risk pre-diction score to forecast Hcc recurrence following *** A retrospective review of LT for Hcc recipients at University Hospitals Bir-mingham between July 2011 and February *** and multivariate analyses were performed to identify recurrence predictors,based on which the novel SIMAP500(satellite nodules,increase in size,microvascular invasion,AFP>500,poor differentiation)risk score was *** 234 LTs for Hcc were performed with a median follow-up of 5.3 *** developed in 25 patients(10.7%).On univariate analyses,RETREAT score>3,α-fetoprotein(AFP)at listing 100-500 and>500,bridging,increased tumour size between imaging at the listing time and explant histology,increase in the size of viable tumour between listing and explant,presence of satellite nodules,micro-and macrovascular invasion on explant and poor differentiation of tumours were significantly associated with recurrence,based on which,the SIMAP500 risk score is *** SIMAP500 demonstrated an excellent predictive ability(c-index=0.803)and outper-formed the RETREAT score(c-index=0.73).SIMAP500 is indicative of the time to disease *** SIMAP500 risk score identifies the LT recipients at risk of Hcc *** stratification allows patient-centric post-transplant surveillance *** validation of the score is recommended.

A comparative UV-HPLc analysis of ten brands of ibuprofen tablets

Objective: To investigate the pharmaceutical equivalence of ten brands of ibuprofen tablets(400 mg) purchased from pharmacies in Benin city, ***: The drug samples were subjected to uniformity of weight, crushing strength,friability, melting point, disintegration and dissolution tests following acceptable and official protocols. The ibuprofen content was determined using UV and high performance liquid chromatography ***: crushing strength values of the drug samples ranged between 6 and 16 kp while the disintegration times were between 7.43 and 10.40 min(for uncoated tablets) and3.25–37.32 min(for coated tablets). Friability values were less than 1% and the melting points of recrystallized ibuprofen from the samples ranged from 73.5 to 76.0 c. The amount of ibuprofen released within 1 h ranged between 18% and 102% and two brands failed the content of active ingredient in the UV method of assay while all the brands passed the test using ***: Ibuprofen(400 mg) tablets marketed in Benin city, Nigeria vary in pharmaceutical quality.

Relationship between Serum Leptin and Adiponectin Levels in Obese Nigerians with Type 2 Diabetes Subjects

Background: Obesity is rising globally, independent of ethnicity, race and age, and is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity especially in persons living with diabetes. The effect of adipokines such as leptin, resistin and adiponectin which are secreted by adipose tissue factors has been linked to the increased risk of the cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Aim: This study aims to assess the levels of serum leptin and serum adiponectin in obese type 2 diabetes subjects, and their relationship with cardio-metabolic component (using lipid profile). Method: This is a cross-sectional comparative hospital-based study in which one hundred and fifty participants grouped into 60 obese, 60 non-obese none diabetic and 30 non-obese non-diabetic adults with similar age from the Endocrinology outpatient’s clinic, General outpatient department (GOPD) and staff clinic of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals complex (OAUTHc). Anthropometric parameters and other relevant clinical details of all subjects were obtained. Fasting venous blood samples were taken from all subjects for the determination of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fasting lipid profile, glycosylated haemoglobin levels (HbA1c), fasting serum insulin, leptin, and adiponectin. Data was analysed using the Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. Results: Twenty-eight (46.7%)) subjects were males while 32 subjects (53.3%) were females (in obese groups). There was no statistical difference between these two groups for both sexes (p = 1.000). The age range for all subjects was 34 to 64 years with their mean age being 52 ± 7.3 years, and for type 2 subjects and the obese non-diabetic 50.7 ± 7.3 years respectively. The mean body mass index of the non-obese and non-diabetic was 23.7 ± 4 Kg/m2 while the anthropometric measurements of the obese two groups were similar. Objective:To determine the effect of Trypanosoma brucei(***)on blood sugar level of infected ***:The experiment was done with 42 albino rats grouped into 3 groups of 14 members *** A was uninfected(control group),Group B was infected with *** and treated with diminazene aceturate,and Group c was infected with *** and treated with imidocarb *** samples were collected from the media canthus of the experimental rats on Days 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 for the assessment of change in blood sugar *** blood sugar levels were determined with a glucometer(Accu-chek active serial ***:10023338).Results:By 4 to 5 days post infection,there was a significant increase(Pction(Day 2 post treatment),no significant difference(P>0.05)was observed in the groups when compared with the control group till Day 12 of the ***:*** caused a significant increase in blood sugar of infected rats.

Effect of Intravenous Tranexamic Acid in Reducing Blood Loss during and after Elective caesarean Section in a Third Level Health Institution: A Randomized controlled Study

Background: Blood loss during caesarean section (c/S) may lead to postpartum haemorrhage, and is one of the direct causes of maternal mortality and morbidity globally. Tranexamic acid is recommended in the treatment of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) if oxytocin and other utertonics are ineffective in controlling PPH. In this centre it is not used prophylactically to reduce blood during caesarean section. Aim: To assess the effect of prophylactic intravenous tranexamic acid on blood loss during and after elective c/S at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH). Methods: This was a prospective, single-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled interventional study conducted at the Obstetric theatre of UPTH from July 2020 to March 2021. Eligible women were randomized into two groups;seventy-two women received intravenous tranexamic acid while seventy-one women received a placebo. Socio-demographic data and the result of the study were collected through a proforma. Data collected was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 22.0. The results were expressed in tables and charts as frequencies, percentages and mean. chi-square test, Fisher’s exact, and T-test were used to determine the relationship between variables. P-value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The findings showed that tranexamic acid significantly reduced mean blood loss during and after c/S (p-value post-surgery was significantly lower in the tranexamic acid group (624.88 ± 200.76 ml) in comparison to the placebo group (864.24 ± 229.09 ml), p-value = 0.001. The mean post-c/S packed cell volume (PcV) was significantly higher among the tranexamic acid group (30.68% ± 2.80%) in comparison to the placebo group (28.07% ± 3.27%), t = 5.131, p-value = 0.0001. The maternal side effects were nausea and vomiting, 9 (12.5%) and 1 (1.4%) participants respectively. conclusion: Tranexamic acid significantly reduced blood loss during and after elective c/S. Ma

Simultaneous Detection of <i>colletotrichum acutatum</i>and <i>c. gloeosporioides</i>from Quiescently Infected Strawberry Foliage by Real-Time PcR Based on High Resolution Melt curve Analysis

Anthracnose of strawberry, caused primarily by the fungal pathogens belonging to colletotrichum acutatum species complex (cASc) and c. gloeosporioides species complex (cGSc) is an economically important disease in the Southeast United States. Quiescently infected (QI) planting stock is one of the most important sources of inoculum in the fruiting field that can only be reliably detected by highly sensitive real time quantitative PcR (q-PcR) assay. In this study, a q-PcR assay was developed and optimized that can discriminate anthracnose fruit rot (AFR) and anthracnose crown rot (AcR) causing species based on the difference in post PcR melting temperatures of amplicons. controlled environment grown plants artificially inoculated with different levels of cASc and cGSc showed a significant (P 0.001) correlation with levels of quantification expressed by ct values in q-PcR from petioles and leaf blades. The leaf blade was a significantly larger reservoir of QI than that of the petiole. Both TaqMan and SYBR Green assay showed similar sensitivity and specificity. Detection of QI on leaves at young middle and older stages from inoculation with same number of conidia indicated that middle aged leaves were the best for assessing QI. Quantification of QI from middle aged leaf samples from a strawberry fruiting field that has been planted with pre-inoculated plants at both ends of rows and let inoculum spread showed higher sensitivity and precision by q-PcR compared to that of a traditional paraquat assay. The assay developed and validated in this study offers a new tool for evaluating planting stocks for QI to make decision on preventative control for strawberry anthracnose.

An Evaluation of the Physicochemical, Structural and Morphological Properties of Selected Tropical Wood Species for Possible Utilization in the Wood Industry

This work investigated and quantified the physicochemical, structural and morphological properties of four (4) tropical timbers as precursor raw materials for possible utilization in the wood plastic industry. The physicochemical properties of the wood samples such as the bulk and tapped density, moisture content, water absorption capacity at 25°c, volatile content, fixed carbon, ash content, alpha cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and extractives contents were determined using standard methods like the European committee for Standardization and (cEN/TS) and the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standards. The structural and morphological properties of the samples were examined with Fourier Infrared Transform (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results indicated that the bulk density values of the timbers ranged from 0.34 g/cm3 in Brachystegia eurycoma (W3) to 0.47 g/cm3 in Erythrophleum suaveolens (W2), with the other timbers, Nuclea diderichii (W1) and Prosopis africana (W4) having the same bulk density of 0.40 g/cm3. With respect to their moisture content, W2 had the highest value (8.38%) while Nauclea diderrichii had the lowest value (6.52%). The water absorption capacities of the woods studied correlated with the cellulose composition of wood in the order of: W3 > W1 > W4 > W2. The FTIR results showed that W2 and W3 presented a slightly more prominent and broader band than the other woods at 1731 cm-1, in agreement with the higher holocellulose content of these species, while W2 and W4 presented the most prominent peaks indicating higher lignin content than W1 and W3.
