Nutritional and Technological Characteristics of New.Cow.ea (<i>Vigna unguiculata</i>) Lines and Varieties Grow. in Eastern Kenya

Protein sources in the diet of people living in semi-arid land of Kenya are lacking and if available it is costly to them. In terms of safe food and a healthy food supply, cow.eas (Vigna unguiculata.) are a significant source of protein, carbohydrates, and minerals especially for poor populations in the Kenya, it is said to be poor man’s meat. The aim of this study w.s to determine nutritional composition of new.y bred ten cow.ea lines and five varieties commonly grow. in Eastern Kenya of Kitui, Machakos and Makueni counties to understand their potential utilization in curbing rising food and nutrition insecurity in arid and semi-arid lands ASALs and in any other food applications in Kenya. The experiment w.s arranged in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) w.ereby proximate composition and minerals w.re determined using standard AOAC and AACC methods and technological characteristics checked using modified methods used by other researchers. Collected data w.re subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) using SAS (2006) version 9.1, mean separation w.s done using Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) method at 5% level of significance. Cow.eas composition ranged from 12.28% - 13.35% for moisture content, 49.37% - 55.74% for total carbohydrates, 2.99% - 3.34% for crude ash, 0.13% - 0.81% for crude lipids, 23.37% - 29.70% for crude protein and 1.40% - 4.34% for crude fibers. Cow.ea samples recorded highest percentage of essential amino acids (60.71%) and non-essential amino acids (39.29%). Minerals ranged from 1.97 - 2.69 mg/100g for calcium, 3.23 - 3.90 mg/100g for magnesium, 205.53 - 223.30 mg/100g for sodium, 0.80 - 1.23 mg/100g for zinc, 1071.15 - 1152.62 mg/100g for potassium and 0.62 - 1.06 mg/100g for phosphorus. For technological properties, lines absorbed w.ter equivalent to their w.ights and they w.re comparable to varieties grow. in the region. Differences betw.en diffuse and focal autoimmune pancreatitis

AIM:To investigate differences in clinical features betw.en diffuse-and focal-type autoimmune pancreatitis(AIP).METHODS:Based on radiological findings by computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging,w. divided 67 AIP patients into diffuse type(D type) and focal type(F type).w. further divided F type into head type(H type) and body and/or tail type(B/T type) according to the location of ***,w. classified the 67 AIP patients into three groups:D type,H type and B/T *** compared the three types of AIP in terms of clinical,laboratory,radiological,functional and histological findings and clinical ***:There w.re 34 patients w.th D-type,19 w.th H-type and 14 w.th B/T-type *** obstructive jaundice w.s frequently detected in D-typepatients(88%) and H-type patients(68%),no B/T-type patients show.d jaundice as an initial symptom(P w.re no differences in frequency of abdominal pain,but acute pancreatitis w.s associated more frequently in B/T-type patients(36%) than in D-type patients(3%)(P = 0.017).Serum immunoglobulin G(IgG)4 levels w.re significantly higher in D-type patients(median 309 mg/dL) than in B/T-type patients(133.5 mg/dL)(P = 0.042).Serum amylase levels in B/T-type patients(median:114 IU/L) w.re significantly greater than in H-type patients(72 IU/L)(P = 0.049).Lymphoplasmacytic sclerosing pancreatitis(LPSP) w.s histologically confirmed in 6 D-type,7 H-type and 4 B/T-type patients;idiopathic duct-centric pancreatitis w.s observed in no *** fibrosis and abundant infiltration of CD20-positive B lymphocytes w.th few.IgG4-positive plasma cells w.re detected in 2 B/T-type *** therapy w.s effective in all 50 patients(31 D type,13 H type and 6 B/T type).Although AIP relapsed during tapering or after stopping steroids in 3 D-type and 3 H-type patients,no patients relapsed in B/T *** follow.up,radiological features of 6 B/T-type patients w.re not changed and 1 B/T-type patient impr

ABO blood type, long-standing diabetes, and the risk of pancreatic cancer

AIM: To retrospectively study pancreatic cancer patients w.th respect to their ABO blood type and diabetes. METHODS: Our analysis included a cohort of 1017 patients w.th pancreatic ductal cancer diagnosed at our hospital in Tokyo. They w.re divided into tw. groups: 114 patients w.th long-standing type 2 diabetes (DM group, defined as diabetes lasting for at least three years before the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer) and 903 patients w.thout diabetes (non-DM group). Multivariate analysis w.s performed to identify factors that are associated w.th long-standing diabetes. The DM group w.s further divided into three subgroups according to the duration of diabetes (3-5 years, 5.1-14.9 years, and 15 years or more) and univariate analyses w.re performed. RESULTS: Of the 883 pancreatic cancer patients w.th serologically assessed ABO blood type, 217 (24.6%) had blood type O. Compared w.th the non-DM group, the DM group had a higher frequency of blood type B [odds ratio (OR) = 2.61, 95%CI: 1.24-5.47; reference group: blood type A]. Moreover, male (OR = 3.17, 95%CI: 1.67-6.06), older than 70 years of age (OR = 2.19, 95%CI: 1.20-3.98) and presence of a family history of diabetes (OR = 6.21, 95%CI: 3.38-11.36) w.re associated w.th long-standing type 2 diabetes. The mean ages w.re 64.8 ± 9.2 years, 67.1 ± 9.8 years, and 71.7 ± 7.0 years in the subgroups w.th the duration of diabetes, 3-5 years, 5.1-14.9 years, and 15 years or more, respectively (P = 0.007). A comparison of ABO blood type distribution among the subgroups also show.d a significant difference (P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: The association of pancreatic cancer w.th blood type and duration of diabetes needs to be further examined in prospective studies.

Hypothyroidism in patients w.th autoimmune pancreatitis

AIM To examine thyroid function and clinical features of hypothyroidism in autoimmune pancreatitis(AIP) *** w. examined thyroid function in 77 patients w.th type 1 AIP(50 males, 27 females; median age 68 years, range 33-85) diagnosed according to the Japanese diagnostic criteria for AIP 2011. w. compared clinical and serological findings betw.en patients w.th and w.thout various categories of hypothyroidism. The change in hypothyroidism after steroid therapy w.s also examined. RESULTS Eight patients(10%) had hypothyroidism of 6 patients had subclinical hypothyroidism w.th a normal serum free thyroxine(FT4) and high thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH) level, and 2 patients had central hypothyroidism w.th low.serum free triiodothyronine(FT3), FT4 and TSH levels. A significant goiter of the thyroid w.s not observed in any patient. There w.re no significant differences in age; male to female ratio; serum concentrations of IgG and IgG 4-related disease(IgG4-RD); presence of antithyroglobulin antibody, antinuclear antigen or rheumatoid factor; or presence of extrapancreatic lesions betw.en the 6 patients w.th subclinical hypothyroidism and patients w.th euthyroidism. After steroid therapy, both subclinical and central hypothyroidism improved w.th improvement of the *** Hypothyroidism w.s observed in 8(10%) of 77 AIP patients and w.s subclinical in 6 patients and central in 2 patients. Further studies are necessary to clarify w.ether this subclinical hypothyroidism is another manifestation of IgG4-RD.
