Vulvar basal cell carcinoma: A retrospective study of 29 cases from Queensland

Objective: Review the clinical features, diagnosis, management and outcomes for 29 cases of Basal cell carcinoma (Bcc) of the Vulva referred to Queensland centre for Gynaecological cancer (QcGc) between 1986 and 2010. Methods: Vulvar Bcc cases from QcGc were reviewed and analysed using the computer software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 11.0. Results: Bcc of the vulva is uncommon with an incidence from the QcGc vulvar cancer registry of 3.2%. Of the 29 patients one died of their Bcc and seven died of unrelated causes. The mean age at diagnosis was 69.5 years (range 40 to 91). All cases were caucasian. Time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis averaged 22.6 months (range 0 - 120 months). Not until a biopsy was performed was the diagnosis made. The most common presenting complaints were pruritis and a lump. Initial treatment was surgical. conclusions: The prognosis for vulvar Bcc is excellent. Histological diagnosis and long term follow-up are important management issues. The status of disease at the margins of surgical specimens does not reliably equate to patient long term outcomes. Follow up should be supervised via a gynecological oncology register to reduce the risk of patient loss to follow up.

Objective: To review the records of cases of Bartholin’s Gland carcinoma referred to the Queensland centre for Gynaecological cancer (QcGc) between mid 1993 and mid 2012. Methods: Bartholin’s Gland carcinoma case data from QcGc were reviewed and analysed using the computer software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 11.0. Results: Of the 12 cases four died of their disease, seven are still alive and disease free and one is alive with recurrent disease. The mean age at diagnosis was 52.8 years. Time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis averaged 5.8 months. All diagnoses were confirmed histologically. Presenting symptoms included a lump and pain. The most common presenting complaint was a lump. Treatment included surgical excision, occasional biopsy followed by radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy. In some cases radiation and chemotherapy was followed by vulvectomy of various extent. conclusions: Bartholin’s Gland carcinoma is a rare condition with outcome dependent on duration of symptoms, including delay in diagnosis, cell-type, cellular differentiation and the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) classification. A Bartholin’s gland mass in a woman aged 40 years or more should be considered malignant until a biopsy proves *** incidence of Bartholin’s Gland carcinoma in Queensland is less than that reported elsewhere but a higher proportion of squamous cell carcinomas was found in this small series.

Methods: VS case data from QcGc were reviewed and analysed using the computer software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 11.0. Results: Of the nine cases three died of their disease, one died of ovarian cancer and five are still alive and disease free. The mean age at diagnosis was 54.8 years. Time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis averaged one month. All diagnoses were confirmed histologically. The most common presenting complaint was a lump. Treatment in all but one case involved surgical excision, one case had chemotherapy alone and two cases had surgery followed by radiotherapy. conclusions: To talk of five year survival for patients with such a rare cancer, so many histological types with variable cell differentiation plus the unknown of when sarcomatous cells metastasize from even early FIGO staged lesions is in our opinion taking generalisation to far. A multidisciplinary approach to management achieves the best results for each individual and pooling multicentre data will improve our understanding of this rare disease and benefit future patients.

In social insects,it has been suggested that reproduction and the production of particular fertilitylinked cuticular hydrocarbons(cHc)may be under shared juvenile hormone(JH)control,and this could have been key in predisposing such cues to later evolve into full-fledged queen pheromone ***,to date,only few studies have experimentally tested this“hormonal pleiotropy”***,we formally test this hypothesis using data from four species of Polistine wasps,Polistes dominula,Polistes satan,Mischocyttarus metathoracicus,and Mischocyttarus cassununga,and experimental treatments with JH using the JH analogue methoprene and the anti-JH *** line with reproduction being under JH control,our results show that across these four species,precocene significantly decreased ovary development when compared with both the acetone solvent-only control and the methoprene *** with the hormonal pleiotropy hypothesis,these effects on reproduction were further matched by subtle shifts in the cHc profiles,with univariate analyses showing that in *** and *** the abundance of particular linear alkanes and mono-methylated alkanes were affected by ovary development and our hormonal *** results indicate that in primitively eusocial wasps,and particularly in Polistes,reproduction and the production of some cHc cues are under joint JH *** suggest that pleiotropic links between reproduction and the production of such hydrocarbon cues have been key enablers for the origin of true fertility and queen signals in more derived,advanced eusocial insects.

Recurrent selection is an important breeding method for population improvement and selecting elite inbreds or fixed lines from the improved ***,a computer simulation tool called QuMARS has been developed,which allows the simulation and optimization of various recurrent selection *** major objective in this study was to use the QuMARS tool to compare phenotypic recurrent,marker-assisted recurrent,and genomic selections(abbreviated respectively as PS,MARS and GS)for both short-and long-termbreeding ***,twomarker selection models were considered,i.e.,stepwise(Rstep)and forward regressions(Forward).For GS,three prediction models were considered,i.e.,genomic best linear unbiased predictors(GBLUP),ridge regression(Ridge),and regression by Moore-Penrose general inverse(InverseMP).To generate genotypes and phenotypes for a given individual during simulation,one additive and two epistasis genetic models were considered with three levels of *** demonstrated that selection responses from GBLUP-based GS and MARS(Forward)were consistently greater than those from PS under the additive model,particularly in early selection *** contrast,selection response from PS was consistently superior over MARS and GS under epistatic *** the two epistasis models,total genetic variance and the additive variance component were increased in some cases after *** simulation,we concluded that GS and PS were effective recurrent selection methods for improved breeding of targeted traits controlled by additive and epistatic quantitative trait loci(QTL).QuMARS provides an opportunity for breeders to compare,optimize and integrate new technology into their conventional breeding programs.

We used stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to study the trophic niche of two species of insectivorous lizards,the Husab sand lizard Pedioplanis husabensis and Bradfield’s Namib day gecko living sympatrically in the Namib *** measured theδ13c andδ15N ratios in lizard blood tissues with different turnover times(whole blood,red blood cells and plasma)to investigate lizard diet in different *** also measured theδ13c andδ15N ratios in available arthropod prey and plant tissues on the site,to identify the avenues of nutrient movement between lizards and their *** the use of stable isotope mixing models,we found that the two lizard species relied on a largely non-overlapping but seasonally variable array of arthropods:*** primarily fed on termites,beetles and wasps,while *** fed mainly on ants,wasps and *** originating from c3 plants were proportionally higher for *** than for *** during autumn and late autumn/early winter,although not *** to the few available data estimating the trophic transfer of nutrients in ectotherms in mixed c3 and c4/crassulacean acid metabolism(cAM)plant landscapes,we found that our lizard species primarily acquired nutrients that originated from c4/cAM *** work adds an important dimension to the general lack of studies using stable isotope analyses to estimate lizard niche partitioning and resource use.

研究了单分子磁体锰配合物Ⅰ :[Mn1 2 O1 2 (O2 cc6 H4 3 cl) 1 6 (H2 O) 3(3 cl c6 H4 cO2 H) ]·(3 cl c6 H4 cO2 H)和配合物Ⅱ :[Mn1 2 O1 2 (O2 ccH2 Br) 1 6 (H2 O) 4]·4 (cH2 cl2 )的高压红外光谱 ,两者不同的压力诱导相转变的压力 (配合物Ⅰ :2 5～ 2 9kbar,配合物Ⅱ :2 9～ 35kbar)被观察到 ,两者均为二级压力诱导相转变。认为在压力诱导相转变时 ,也发生了配合物高自旋向低态自旋态的转变。配合物Ⅰ的平均压力灵敏度不同于通常情况 ,它在低压相区的平均压力灵敏度 (0 19cm- 1 ·kbar- 1 )比高压相区 (0 2 9cm- 1 ·kbar- 1 )低。而配合物Ⅱ与通常情况相似 ,在低压相区平均压力灵敏度 (0 34cm- 1 ·kbar- 1 )比高压相区 (0 2 3cm- 1 ·kbar- 1 )为高 ,即在高压相区的可压缩性比低压相区小。
