Treatment of Ru(cO)(cl)(H)(PPh3)3 with NaLOEt (LOEt-= [cpco{P(O)(OEt)2}3]-) afforded the hydride complex (PPh3)(cO)-LOEtRu(H) (1), which has been characterized by X-ray crystallography. Similarly, the tricyclohexylphosphine analogue, (Pcy3)(cO)LOEtRu(H) (2), was synthesized from Ru(cO)cl(H)(Pcy3)2 and NaLOEt. Treatment of complex 1 with R'SO2N3 afforded the (arylsulfonyl)amido complexes LOEtRu(cO)(PPh3)(NHSO2R) (R = 2,4,6-i-Pr3c6H2 (3), 4-t-Buc6H4 (4)). The crystal structure of complex 3 has been determined. The Ru-N distance and Ru-N-S angle in 3 are 2.076(3) and 126.14(16)°, respectively. Reactions of complex 1 with acids have been studied.

Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage(SAGD)is widely used in the Athabasca oil sands deposit to recover *** the viscosity of bitumen is high at original reservoir conditions,heat is required to lower its viscosity to the point it becomes mobile enough to be recovered under gravity *** heat the reservoir,steam is injected into the formation and thus SAGD is energy *** that the fuel used to generate steam is the largest operating cost,the steam-to-oil ratio is one of the key parameter for evaluating the economics of any SAGD ***,the use of dynamic distributed steam injection within a pad of SAGD wellpairs is *** results demonstrate that feedback control leads to improvements of the SOR over that of constant *** results show that the controller is able to detect the“sweet spots”(oil zones with better geological properties)in the reservoir and dynamically deliver more steam to that ***,it reduces the steam injection towards relatively worse quality zones to lower the local SOR.

Melanoma of the vulva: A retrospective study of 46 cases from Queensland

Objective: To review the records of cases of vulvar melanoma referred to the Queensland centre for Gynaecological cancer (QcGc) between 1986 and 2009 recognising the high incidence of cutaneous melanoma in Queensland. Methods: Vulvar melanoma case data from QcGc were reviewed and analysed using the computer software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 11.0. Results: Of the 46 cases 22 died of their disease, nine died of other diseases, ten are still alive and five lost to follow up. The mean age at diagnosis was 65.5 years for nodular melanoma and 69 years for superficial spreading melanoma. All cases were caucasian. Time from on-set of symptoms to diagnosis averaged 3.2 months. In all 46 cases diagnosis was confirmed histologically. Presenting symptoms included lumps, itch, stinging, bleeding and pain. The most common presenting complaint was a lump. The initial treatment was surgical without a trend to a less radical approach to management. conclusions: Vulvar melanoma prognosis remains guarded. Increased tumor size, depth of invasion, mitotic rate, groin lymph node positivity and status of disease at the margins of surgical specimens reliably equate to long term outcome. The incidence of vulvar melanoma was not increased in Queensland.

canadian boreal mixedwood forests are extensive,with large potential for carbon sequestration and storage;thus,knowledge of their carbon stocks at different stand ages is needed to adapt forest management practices to help meet climate-change mitigation *** stocks were quantified at three Ontario boreal mixedwood sites.A harvested stand,a juvenile stand replanted with spruce seedlings and a mature stand had total carbon stocks(±SE)of 133±13 at age 2,130±13 at age 25,and 207±15 Mg c ha^-1 at age 81 *** the clear-cut site,stocks were reduced by about 40%or 90 Mg c ha^-1 at *** held 27,34 and 62%of stocks,while detritus held 34,29 and 13%of stocks at age 2,25 and 81,*** soil carbon stocks averaged 51 Mg c ha^-1,and held 38,37 and 25%of *** net primary productivity(±SE)in the harvested and juvenile stand was 2.1±0.2 and 3.7±0.3 Mg c ha^-1 per annum(p.a.),compared to 2.6±2.5 Mg c ha^-1 *** the mature *** mature canopies studied had typical boreal mixedwood composition and mean carbon densities of 208 Mg c ha^-1,which is above average for managed canadian boreal forest ecosystems.A comparison of published results from canadian boreal forest ecosystems showed that carbon stocks in mixedwood stands are typically higher than coniferous stands at all ages,which was also true for stocks in vegetation and ***,aboveground net primary productivity was typically found to be higher in mixedwood than in coniferous boreal forest stands over a range of *** from this study,together with those published from the other boreal forest stands demonstrate the potential for enhanced carbon sequestration through modified forest management practices to take advantage of canadian boreal mixedwood stand characteristics.

Objective: To describe the mechanism, injury pattern and management of women who present to the Emergency Department with non-obstetric vaginal trauma. Methods: A retrospective, single institution case series was carried out. Data was sourced from medical records of women who presented to the Emergency Department and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital between 2007 and 2011. Records of possible injuries to the vagina were assessed to determine incidence, age, site, type of injury, mechanism of injury and whether urinary retention required treatment. Results: Vaginal non-obstetric trauma was found in 11 of 519 cases resulting in lacerations or tears. Injuries were due to consensual coitus, other forms of sexual activity and self harm. Acute urinary retention did not occur in any case but two cases required resuscitation. Site of injury was most common high in the vagina. conclusion: Non-obstetric vaginal injuries are uncommon (incidence 2.1%). All cases require assessment for vulvar, vaginal, urethral, anal and bony pelvis injuries. This may require examination under anaesthesia. Social worker and psychological support is important to reduce the incidence of long-term psychological problems.

Anti-herpes simplex virus activities of monogalactosyl diglyceride and digalactosyl diglyceride from clinacanthus nutans, a traditional Thai herbal medicine

Objective: To evaluate the monogalactosyl diglyceride(MGDG) and digalactosyl diglyceride(DGDG) from clinacanthus nutans(c. nutans) for their in vitro antiviral activities against herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1) and type 2(HSV-2) by plaque reduction ***: MGDG and DGDG were extracted with chloroform from c. nutans *** and DGDG were separated from chloroform crude extract using column chromatography, characterized by thin layer chromatography and quantified by high performance liquid chromatography. The anti HSV-1 and 2 activity against pre-treatment and posttreatment of the compounds was evaluated using plaque reduction assay. The cytotoxicity of the extract and the compounds on Vero cells were performed by MTT ***: MGDG and DGDG obtained by column chromatography showed identical profiles as standard MGDG and standard DGDG using thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. MGDG and DGDG from c. nutans showed 100%inhibition of HSV-1 replication at the post step of infection at noncytotoxic concentration with Ic50 values of 36.00 and 40.00 mg/m L, and HSV-2 at 41.00 and 43.20 mg/mL,respectively. Moreover, MGDG and DGDG from c. nutans were demonstrated to have antiherpes simplex activity at the same level as standard synthetic compounds. In contrast, pretreatment of Vero cells with MGDG and DGDG before HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection did not show inhibitory effect against these viruses. MGDG and DGDG exhibited antiviral activity against HSV-1 with selectivity index of 26.00 and 23.00 and HSV-2 of 23.30 and ***: MGDG and DGDG from c. nutans, a traditional Thai herbal medicine illustrated inhibitory activity against HSV-1 and HSV-2, probably by inhibiting the late stage of multiplication, suggesting their promising use as anti-HSV agents.

The role of Bone Tissue Engineering in the field of Regenerative Medicine has been the topic of substantial research over the past two decades. Technological advances have improved orthopaedic implants and surgical techniques for bone reconstruction. However, improvements in surgical techniques to reconstruct bone have been limited by the paucity of autologous materials available and donor site morbidity. Recent advances in the development of biomaterials have provided attractive alternatives to bone grafting expanding the surgical options for restoring the form and function of injured bone. Specifically, novel bioactive （second generation） biomaterials have been developed that are characterised by controlled action and reaction to the host tissue environment, whilst exhibiting controlled chemical breakdown and resorption with an ultimate replacement by regenerating tissue. Future generations of biomaterials （third generation） are designed to be not only osteo- conductive but also osteoinductive, i.e. to stimulate regeneration of host tissues by combining tissue engineer- ing and in situ tissue regeneration methods with a focus on novel applications. These techniques will lead to novel possibilities for tissue regeneration and repair. At present, tissue engineered constructs that may find future use as bone grafts for complex skeletal defects, whether from post-traumatic, degenerative, neoplastic or congenital/developmental ＂origin＂ require osseous reconstruction to ensure structural and functional integrity. Engineering functional bone using combinations of cells, scaffolds and bioactive factors is a promising strategy and a particular feature for future development in the area of hybrid materials which are able to exhibit suitable biomimetic and mechanical properties. This review will discuss the state of the art in this field and what we can expect from future generations of bone regeneration concepts.
