Carbon concentrations and carbon storage capacity of three old-growth forests in the Sila National Park,Southern Italy

Old-growth forests play a key-role in reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2)) concentrations by storing large CO_(2)amounts in biomass and soil over *** quantifies the carbon pool into different forest compartments in three Mediterranean old-growth forests of Southern Italy populated by Pinus laricio,Fagus sylvatica and Abies *** carbon pools have been assessed per compartment,i.e.,living trees,dead wood,litterfall(foliar and woody),roots and 0-20 cm topsoil,combining the whole old-growth forest mass,(i.e.,using tree allometric relationships,deadwood factor conversions,root-to-shoot ratios,litterfall and soil samplings) by the respective organic carbon *** results show the considerable capacity of these forest ecosystems in storing CO_(2)in biomass and soil,with carbon pool values ranging from 532.2to 596.5 Mg C *** trees and 0-20 cm topsoil had larger carbon pool,contributing 53.0 and 22.1%,*** most cases,organic carbon concentration was higher(more than 60%) than the average carbon conversion rate of 50%,especially in living trees,deadwood,and woody *** study contributes further scientific evidence of the capacity of old-growth forests in storing CO_(2)in their different compartments,with special evidence on tree biomass,litterfall and mineral soil,thereby highlighting the key role of old-growth forests within the challenge of climate change mitigation.

Nitrogen Release from Slow-Release Fertilizers in Soils with Different Microbial Activities

Soil microbial activity is recognized as an important factor affecting nitrogen (N) release from slow-release fertilizers. However,studies on the effect of size and activity of soil microflora on fertilizer degradation have provided contrasting results. To date, no clear relationships exist between soil microbial activity and the release of N from slow-release fertilizers. Hence, the aim of this study was to better understand such relationships by determining the release of N from three slow-release fertilizers in soils with different microbial activities. Soils were amended with urea-formaldehyde (UF), isobutylidene diurea (IBDU), and crotonylidene diurea (CDU). Urea, a soluble fertilizer, was used as the control. Fertilized soil samples were placed in a leaching system, and the release of N was determined by measuring ammonium-N and nitrate-N concentrations in leachates during 90 d of incubation. Non-linear regression was used to fit N leaching rate to a first-order model. In all the treated soils, N was released in the order: urea (89%–100%) > IBDU (59%–94%) >UF (46%–73%) > CDU (44%–56%). At the end of incubation, N released from CDU did not differ (P > 0.05) among soils. On the contrary, UF and IBDU released significantly lower (P < 0.05) amounts of N in the soil with higher microbial activity and lower *** rate constant (K_0) for UF was lower (P < 0.05) in the soil with lower pH. Taken together, our results indicated that soil microbial size and microbial activity had a marginal effect on fertilizer mineralization.

Aerodynamic optimization of an adaptive flap for next-generation green aircraft

Adaptive,morphing flaps are taking ever-increasing attention in civil aviation thanks to the expected benefits this technology can bring at the aircraft level in terms of high-lift performance improvement and related fuel burnt reduction per *** upon morphing capabilities,it is possible to fix a unique setting for the flap and adapt the flap shape to match the aerodynamic requirements for take-off or *** proper morphed shapes can assure better high-lift performances than those achievable by referring to a conventional ***,standing the unique flap setting for take-off and landing,a dramatic simplification of the flap deployment systems may be *** a consequence of this simplification,the deployment system can be fully hosted in the wing,thus avoiding under-wing nacelles with significantly better aerodynamics and fuel *** first step for a rational design of an adaptive flap consists in defining the target morphed shapes and the unique optimal flap setting in the take-off and landing *** this work,aerodynamic optimization analyses are carried out to determine the best flap setting and related morphed shapes in compliance with the take-off and landing requirements of a reference civil transport *** different initial conditions are adopted to avoid the optimization falling into local optima,thus obtaining four groups of optimal candidate *** comparing each candidate’s performance through 2D and 3D simulations,the optimal configuration has been selected.2D simulations show that the optimal configuration is characterized by a maximum lift increase of 31.92%in take-off and 9.04%in *** to 3D simulations,the rise in maximum lift equals 22.26%in take-off and 3.50%in *** results are finally verified through wind tunnel tests,and the aerodynamic mechanism behind the obtained improvements is explained by carefully analyzing the flow field around the flap.

The design and application of morphing systems are ongoing issues compelling the aviation *** Clean Sky-program represents the most significant aeronautical research ever launched in Europe on advanced technologies for greening next-generation *** primary purpose of the program is to develop new concepts aimed at decreasing the effects of aviation on the environment,increasing reliability,and promoting eco-friendly *** ambitions are pursued through research on enabling technologies fostering noise and gas emissions reduction,mainly by improving aircraft aerodynamic *** the Clean Sky framework,a multimodal morphing flap device was designed based on tight industrial requirements and tailored for large civil aircraft *** flap is deployed in one unique setting,and its cross section is morphed differently in take-off and landing to get the necessary extra lift for the specific flight ***,during the cruise,the tip of the flap is deflected for load control and induced drag *** manufacturing the first flap prototype,a high-speed(Ma=0.3),large-scale test campaign(geometric scale factor 1:3)was deemed necessary to validate the performance improvements brought by this novel system at the aircraft *** the other hand,the geometrical scaling of the flap prototype was considered impracticable due to the unscalability of the embedded mechanisms and actuators for shape ***,a new architecture was conceived for the flap model to comply with the scaled dimensions requirements,withstand the relevant loads expected during the wind tunnel tests and emulate the shape transition capabilities of the true-scale *** strategies were developed to effectively morph the model during wind tunnel tests while ensuring the robustness of each morphed configuration and maintaining adequate stiffness levels to prevent undesirable deviations from the intended aerodynamic ***,

BACKGROUND Bow hunter’s syndrome(BHS)is a rare but surgically treatable cause of vertebrobasilar insufficiency due to dynamic rotational occlusion of the vertebral ***,patients present with posterior circulation transient ischaemic symptoms such as presyncope,syncope,vertigo,diplopia,and horizontal nystagmus,but irreversible deficits,including medullary and cerebellar infarctions,have also been *** SUMMARY A 70-year-old patient presented an acute onset of vertigo and gait instability triggered by right head *** medical history included previous episodes of unilateral left neck and occipital pain followed by light-headedness,sweating,and blurred vision when turning his head,and these episodes were associated with severe degenerative changes in the atlanto-dens and left atlanto-axial facet joints and right rotation of the C2 cervical *** magnetic resonance imaging revealed the presence of acute bilateral cerebellar ischaemic lesions,while static vascular imaging did not reveal any vertebral artery *** ultrasonography and angiography were performed and confirmed the presence of a dynamic occlusion of the vertebral artery V3-V4 segment when the head was rotated to the right secondary to left C1-C2 bone spur *** decompression led to complete resolution of paroxysmal symptoms without neurological *** BHS should be considered in cases of repeated posterior circulation transient ischaemic attack or ischaemic stroke,particularly when associated with high cervical spine abnormalities.

Morphing wing flaps for large civil aircraft:Evolution of a smart technology across the Clean Sky program

Abstract Morphing wing structures are widely considered among the most promising technologies for the improvement of aerodynamic performances in large civil *** controlled adaptation of the wing shape to external operative conditions naturally enables the maximization of aircraft aerodynamic efficiency,with positive fallouts on the amount of fuel burned and pollutant *** benefits brought by morphing wings at aircraft level are accompanied by the criticalities of the enabling technologies,mainly involving weight penalties,overconsumption of electrical power,and safety *** attempt to solve such criticalities passes through the development of novel design approaches,ensuring the consolidation of reliable structural solutions that are adequately mature for certification and in-flight *** this work,the development phases of a multimodal camber morphing wing flap,tailored for large civil aircraft applications,are outlined with specific reference to the activities addressed by the author in the framework of the Clean Sky *** flap is morphed according to target shapes depending on aircraft flight conditions and defined to enhance high-lift performances during takeoff and landing,as well as wing aerodynamic efficiency during *** innovative system based on finger-like robotic ribs driven by electromechanical actuators is proposed as morphing-enabling technology;the maturation process of the device is then traced from the proof of concept to the consolidation of a true-scale demonstrator for pre-flight ground validation tests.A step-by-step approach involving the design and testing of intermediate demonstrators is then carried out to show the compliance of the adaptive system with industrial standards and safety *** technical issues encountered during the development of each intermediate demonstrator are critically analyzed,and justifications are provided for all the adopted engineering ***,the layout

The identification of wildlife-vehicle collision hotspots: Citizen science reveals spatial and temporal patterns

Linear infrastructures(e.g.,roads,railways,pipelines,and powerlines)pose a serious threat to wildlife,due to the risk of wildlife-vehicle collisions(roadkills).The placement of mitigation measures,such as crossing structures,should consider species’life cycles and ecological *** an assessment would require data collection over large areas,which may be possible by employing citizen *** this study,we aimed to identify spatiotemporal trends of roadkill occurrence using citizen science data from one of the most urbanized and biodiversityrich regions of *** trends were analyzed using generalized additive models,while landscape patterns were assessed by identifying significant thresholds over land cover gradients,related to increases in relative roadkill abundance,by employing threshold indicator taxa *** approach recorded a total of 529 roadkills,including 33 different species,comprising 13 mammal,10 bird,6 reptile,and 2 amphibian *** analysis indicated significant temporal trends for the red fox,the European hedgehog,the stone marten and the European badger,with peaks in roadkill occurrence between the winter and spring *** roadkill abundance increased mostly in landscapes with anthropogenic land cover classes,such as complex cultivations,orchards,or urban *** results allowed us to develop a map of potential roadkill risk that could assist in planning the placement of mitigation *** science contributions from highly populated areas allowed data collection over a large area and a dense road network,and also directly led to the evaluation of management decisional options.

Lyapunov stability of competitive cells dynamics in tumor mechanobiology

Poromechanics plays a key role in modelling hard and soft tissue behaviours,by providing a thermodynamic framework in which chemo-mechanical mutual interactions among fluid and solid constituents can be consistently rooted,at different scale *** this context,how different biological species(including cells,extra-cellular components and chemical metabolites)interplay within complex environments is studied for characterizing the mechanobiology of tumor growth,governed by intra-tumoral residual stresses that initiate mechanotransductive processes deregulating normal tissue homeostasis and leading to tissue *** the coupling between tumor poroelasticity and interspecific competitive dynamics has recently highlighted how microscopic cells and environment interactions influence growth-associated stresses and tumor pathophysiology,the nonlinear interlacing among biochemical factors and mechanics somehow hindered the possibility of gaining qualitative insights into cells *** by this,in the present work we recover the linear poroelasticity in order to benefit of a reduced complexity,so first deriving the well-known Lyapunov stability criterion from the thermodynamic dissipation principle and then analysing the stability of the mechanical competition among cells fighting for common space and resources during cancer growth and *** the end,the linear poroelastic model enriched by interspecific dynamics is also exploited to show how growth anisotropy can alter the stress field in spherical tumor masses,by thus indirectly affecting cell mechano-sensing.

Outcome of nonerosive gastro-esophageal reflux disease patients with pathological acid exposure

AIM: To assess the management and outcome of nonerosive gastro-esophageal reflux disease (NERD) patients who were identified retrospectively, after a 5-year ***: We included patients with gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms who had a negative endoscopy result and pathological 24-h esophageal pH-monitoring while off therapy. We interviewed them after an average period of 5 years (range 3.5-7 years) by means of a structured questionnaire to assess presence of GERD symptoms, related therapy, updated en-doscopic data and other features. We assessed predictors of esophagitis development by means of univariate and multivariate statistical ***: 260 patients (137 women) were included. Predominant GERD symptoms were heartburn andregurgitation in 103/260 (40%). 70% received a maintenance treatment, which was proton pump inhibitor (PPI) in 55% of cases. An average number of 1.5 symptomatic relapses per patient/year of follow-up were observed. A progression to erosive gastro-esophageal reflux disease (ERD) was found in 58/193 (30.0%) of patients undergoing repeat endoscopy; 72% of these were Los Angeles grade A-B. CONCLUSION: This study shows that progression to ERD occurs in about 5% of NERD cases per year, despite therapy. Only two factors consistently and independently influence progression: smoking and absence of PPI therapy.
