Reinforcement of Hydroxypropylcellulose Films by Cellulose Nanocrystals in the Presence of Surfactants

Hydroxypropylcellulose（HPC） films were prepared by casting with cellulose nanocrystals in the presence of anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulphate（SDS） and cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide（CTAB）. The cellulose nanocrystals were isolated from maize straw, a biomass source produced in huge quantities as an agrowaste in Brazil. These bionanocomposite films had good transparency and their surface hydrophilic character was evidenced by static contact angle measurements. Thermogravimetry（TGA） measurement revealed that nanocrystals and surfactants changed the thermal stability of the HPC films. Dynamic mechanical analysis（DMA） showed that the tensile storage and loss moduli of the HPC films increased by increasing the contents of cellulose nanocrystals and surfactants, especially in the case of CTAB. This good reinforcing effect of HPC matrix can be explained as due to electrostatic attractive interactions brought about by the presence of CTAB and the nanocrystals.

This study tested three preparations of spices made from medicinal plants with proven cardioprotective activity. The experiment was conducted in 20 hypertensive patients, evaluating the efficacy of preparations in reduced levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, body weight and BMI （body mass index）. The treatments （T1-garlic, onion and cilantro, oregano; T2-basil, parsley and garlic; and T3-garlic, onion, rosemary and coriander） were added at 1 g of hyposodic salt. The control （T4） was consisting of low sodium salt. All treatments were used for 30 days, in double blind. In outpatient care, anthropometric measurements height and biochemical determinations （time-0, 15 and 30 days） were made. Data were subjected to analysis of variance, average and regression, at 5% significance level. Ethics committee on research approved the project （CAAE 0023.***.238.000-08）. The treatments did not differ in the variables analyzed, which indicates that they are as effective as T4. The values of triglycerides and total cholesterol at 15 days and 30 days of use of spices remained within normal limits. Levels of HDL （high density lipoprotein） and LDL （low density lipoprotein） cholesterol remained in the range of the reference values. Only TI was the most effective in reducing all biochemical parameters over time. The T1 and T2 treatments were effective in weight loss and BMI reduction.

The lack of proper maintenance in buildings is responsible for various anomalies, which can cause property and personal damage. The objective of this study is to analyze the maintenance management of the administration building at the Technological Park UFRJ/Brazil, trying to emphasize the relation between maintenance and good performance of the building and to demonstrate the need to develop a consistent maintenance system to achieve an efficient maintenance management. The study allowed to present strategies and possibilities of interventions, in addition to proposing the essential aspects for the development of a structured maintenance system. After reviewing the issue of building maintenance under the various perspectives presented, the importance of planning a preventive building maintenance, according to standards, to achieve the level of performance expected for the building, besides being essential the search for tools and methods that can increase the efficiency of management can be concluded. It is also pertinent to conclude that prevention is the most effective solution against the depreciation factors that affect a building, being the most economical viable, and ensuring other benefits for the building and its users, such as security, property valuation and attendance to the warranty period.

Purpose: A 40-year-old male with a severe corneal melting, peripheral infiltration and nasal perforation in the right eye after a not affiliated case of urethritis is reported. Methods: Retrospective case report. Results: A sample of conjunctival discharge was sent to culture, in where Gram-diplococci grew and therefore a systemic antibiotic treatment was initiated. Given the severity of the clinic, a penetrating keratoplasty is conducted two days after admission and the corneal button was sent to microbiology, which polymerase chain reaction was positive for Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Conclusion: Despite it being a rare process in an adult, keratitis caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae should be suspected in all sexually active patients with conjunctivitis and with a clinic genitourinary medical history. The systemic therapy showed a superior effectiveness in combination with topical therapy than the last one on its own.

Background: This study evaluated the effects of Eimeria spp. challenge and dietary supplementation with free methionine or methionine dipeptide on animal performance;expression of genes associated with the immune system, antioxidant system, and amino acid transport in the jejunum;and redox status of the jejunum of broiler ***: A randomized, 2 × 3 factorial design was used, in which Eimeria spp. challenge was the first factor(Eimeria-challenged, EC, or unchallenged, UC, broilers) and methionine supplementation was the second factor(non-supplemented, NS;free DL-methionine, DL-Met;and methionine dipeptide, DL-methionyl-DL-methionine, DLMMet). At 14 days of age, chickens were inoculated orally with sporulated oocysts of Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria praecox, Eimeria maxima, and Eimeria mitis. Birds were killed by cervical dislocation 144 h post-inoculation(PI), and the jejunum was collected for biochemical and molecular ***: EC broilers had a 13% lower feed intake(FI), 37% lower body weight gain(BWG), and 39% higher feed conversion ratio(FCR) than UC broilers. Chickens fed the DL-Met diet had higher BWG(about 12% higher) and better FCR(about 12% lower) than chickens fed the NS diet. EC chickens had lower relative weight of the bursa of Fabricius(51.8%) and higher relative weights of the spleen and whole intestine(53.6% and 26.3%, respectively) than UC chickens. Eimeria spp. challenge led to an increase in the levels of oxidative substances, such as nitrite and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS), in the jejunum of chickens 144 h PI. Among UC chickens, those fed the DL-Met diet had higher total antioxidant capacity(TAC) and lower catalase(CAT) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) activities. EC chickens that received the NS diet had higher carbonylated protein content(CP). This result was associated with their lower TAC and catalase activity. A protocol of polymerase chain reaction-random amplified polymorphic DNAs (PCR-RAPDs) was established to analyse the gene diversity and genotype identification for clones of Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl. in Chile. Ten (out of 34) clones from introduction trial located in Voipir-Villarrica, Chile, were studied. The PCR-RAPDs technique and a modified hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) protocol were used for genomic DNA extraction. The PCR tests were carried out employing 10-mer random primers. The amplification products were detected by electrophoresis in agarose gels. Forty nine polymorphic bands were obtained with the selected primers (BG04, BF07, BF12, BF13, and BF14) and were ordered according to their molecular size. The genetic similarity between samples was calculated by the Jaccard index and a dendrogram was con- structed using a cluster analysis of unweighted pair group method using arithmetic averages (UPGMA). Of the primers tested, 5 (out of 60) RAPD primers were selected for their reproducibility and high polymorphism. A total of 49 polymorphic RAPD bands were detected out of 252 bands. The genetic similarity analysis demonstrates an extensive genetic variability between the tested clones and the dendrogram depicts the genetic relationships among the clones, suggesting a geographic relationship. The results indicate that the RAPD markers permitted the identification of the assayed clones, although they are derived from the same geo- graphic origin.
