Efficacy of Oncoxin-Viusid on the Reduction of Adverse Reactions to Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy in Patients Diagnosed with Cervical Cancer and Endometrial Adenocarcinoma

Introduction: Oncoxin-Viusid (OV) has shown antioxidant, immunomodulatory and anti-tumour capabilities in experimental studies on humans and animal subjects. Acute toxicity of Radiation Therapy (RT) and Chemotherapy (CT) in patients with cervical cancer and endometrial adenocarcinoma impact quality of life and, therefore, outcomes of these therapies. Objective: To identify Oncoxin-Viusid’s efficacy in reducing acute toxicity produced by onco-specific treatments in patients with cervical cancer and endometrial adenocarcinoma. Materials and Methods: A controlled, randomised double-blind phase II clinical trial was performed with a sample size of 63 patients distributed into 2 groups: one receiving the standard treatment plus the Oncoxin-Viusid nutritional supplement (OV group) and another receiving the standard treatment and placebo (P group). The primary efficacy variable is the proportion of secondary disruptions to acute adverse reactions produced by RT and CT. Results: The number of patients suffering adverse events from chemotherapy was 20.6% less in the OV group (70.0%) than in the placebo group (90.6%) (p = 0.04). We recorded consistently normal values of haemoglobin (-6.2 OV group vs -8.3 P group, p = 0.009), platelet count (-17.4 OV group vs -27.6 P group, p = 0.009) and leukocytes (-31.8 OV group vs -41.4 P group, p = 0.025) in the OV group, tolerating 4 more cytostatic doses on average than the placebo group. Significant increase in quality of life (QLQ-30) was registered in the OV group with a large effect size on such issues as emotional and social function (Cohen’s d = 0.9), as well as in the reduction of symptoms like dyspnea 60%, insomnia 15% and anorexia 30% (item CX-2), (Cohen’s d = 0.98), which were higher than the placebo group. Conclusions: OV administration reduces onco-specific adverse events and improves quality of life in patients diagnosed with cervical cancer and endometrial adenocarcinoma undergoing radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Chronic pain, posttraumatic stress disorder, and opioid intake: A systematic review

BACKGROUND The literature suggests that there is a high degree of co-occurrence between chronic pain and posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD). An association has been found between PTSD and substance abuse. PTSD is a severe disorder that should be taken into account when opioids are prescribed. It has been found that the prevalence of opioid use disorder(OUD) in chronic pain patients is higher among those with PTSD than those without this *** To perform a systematic review on the association between PTSD, chronic noncancer pain(CNCP), and opioid intake(i.e., prescription, misuse, and abuse).METHODS We conducted a systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The Patient, Intervention,Comparator, and Outcomes(PICOS) criteria were formulated a priori in the protocol of the systematic review. A search was conducted of the PROSPERO database. In March 2019, searches were also conducted of 5 other databases:Pub Med, MEDLINE, Psyc INFO, Web of Science, and PILOTS. The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network checklist for cohort studies was used to assess the selected studies for their methodological quality and risk of bias. Each study was evaluated according to its internal validity, participant sampling,confounding variables, and the statistical *** A total of 151 potentially eligible studies were identified of which 17 were retained for analysis. Only 10 met the selection criteria. All the studies were published between 2008 and 2018 and were conducted in the United States. The eligible studies included a total of 1622785 unique participants. Of these, 196516 had comorbid CNCP and PTSD and were consuming opiates. The participants had a cross-study mean age of 35.2 years. The majority of participants were men(81.6%). Antioxidant,anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive potential of Ternstroemia sylvatica Schltdl.&Cham

ObjectiveTo evaluate the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant and acute toxicity of extracts obtained from a successive extraction with solvents of ascending polarity [hexane, hex; chloroform, CHCl3 and ethanol (EtOH)] of Ternstroemia sylvatica Schltdl. & *** antioxidant potential was evaluated by 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, the ferric reducing/antioxidant power assays and by determining the total phenolic content. The anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects were evaluated using the in vivo croton oil-induced ear edema, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate induced ear edema, carrageenan-induced paw edema, acetic acid-induced writhing and formalin murine models. The acute toxicity was tested using the Lorke’s method in *** EtOH extract was the most active for the antioxidant potential tests diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (68.70% inhibition), ferric reducing/antioxidant power [(2 431.30 ± 102.10) mmol Fe2+ and total polyphenols content (215.80 ± 8.50) meqAG/g]. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by topical application of croton oil (2 mg/ear dose) where the EtOH extract showed the strongest activity compared to the control group (45.13% inhibition), whereas in the phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate model, at the same dose, the CHCl3 extract showed the highest inhibition (42.88%). In the carrageenan induced edema model, the EtOH extract showed a stronger inhibition compared to indomethacin (56.34% and 50.70% at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg of extract, respectively) during the first hour. Cholecystokinin in the Pathogenesis of Bulimia Nervosa

Objective: This review aims to describe the role of the hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) in the pathogenesis of bulimia nervosa (BN), the perpetuation of this illness and the possibility of its use as a target for future therapeutic advances. Methods: Search for cholecystokinin AND bulimia nervosa in Pubmed Central, with no limits, identified 38 articles published up to the present date. Results: It is well established that CCK is altered in the pathogenesis of BN, and that its main role is in the perpetuation of the disorder rather than the cause of it. Discussion: Additional studies will be needed to further understand the mechanisms by which CCK regulates orexigenic pathways. If an orally active, longer acting analogue of CCK could be developed, it would be of significant interest as an appetite suppressant and a key adjuvant in the treatment of patients suffering from BN, particularly in refractory cases.

Pesticides Recovery and Detection from Agricultural Soil Leachates Using Gas Chromatography Masses with Electron Capture Detector

In this study, it is reported an analytical approach to recover organochlorine pesticides from a clay soil. Soil was physical and chemically characterized. Also pesticides extraction was carried out using packed columns and various aqueous media (H2O-milliQ, NaOH, HCl, SDS, Triton X-114, Humic acids and Acetonitrile). The leachate samples were analyzed on an Agilent Technologies 6890N Gas Chromatograph with electron capture in a# AB002 Column 30.0 m × 250 μm × 0.25 μm calibrated, 25 psi pressure, flow 2.9 ml/min, temperature 25°C, ultra-high purity Helium as the entrainment gas and an elution time of 50 min. The results show that the highest extraction percentage of pollutants in the soil washing was obtained with acetonitrile recovering: p, p’-DDT (91.0%);p, p’-DDE (92.0%);p, p’-DDD (96.0%);aldrin (98.6%);dieldrin (98.0%). With Triton X-114, the extractions recovery was: p, p’-DDT (63.0%);p, p’-DDE (64.0%);p, p’-DDD (65.0%);aldrin (67.0%);dieldrin (72.0%). This study illustrates the potential Applicability of SPME for routine analysis of organochlorine pesticides in soils.

BACKGROUND The high prevalence and persistence of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection, as well as the diversity of pathologies related to it, suggest that the virulence factors used by this microorganism are varied. Moreover, as its proteome contains 340hypothetical proteins, it is important to investigate them to completely understand the mechanisms of its virulence and survival. We have previously reported that the hypothetical protein HP0953 is overexpressed during the first hours of adhesion to inert surfaces, under stress conditions, suggesting its role in the environmental survival of this bacterium and perhaps as a virulence *** To investigate the expression and localization of HP0953 during adhesion to an inert surface and against gastric(AGS) *** Expression analysis was performed for HP0953 during H. pylori adhesion. HP0953 expression at 0,3, 12, 24, and 48 h was evaluated and compared using the Kruskal-Wallis equality-of-populations rank test. Recombinant protein was produced and used to obtain polyclonal antibodies for immunolocalization. Immunogold technique was performed on bacterial sections during adherence to inert surfaces and AGS cells, which was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. HP0953 protein sequence was analyzed to predict the presence of a signal peptide and transmembrane helices, both provided by the ExPASy platform, and using the GLYCOPP platform for glycosylation sites. Reservoir Processes Related to Exploitation in Los Azufres (México) Geothermal Field Indicated by Geochemical and Production Monitoring Data

A combined analysis of geochemical and production data of 39 wells of the Los Azufres (Mexico) geothermal field (227.4 MWe) over time was developed to investigate the exploitation-related processes for 2003-2011. In the south zone, important effects of reinjection were observed through Cl increases in some wells (up to 8000 mg/kg) while in wells with significant boiling, Cl has decreased. In most of the north zone wells, the variations in gas data indicated boiling and condensation of a highly gas-depleted brine, which seems to consist of reinjection fluids. It is suggested that this process maintains the production in the zone relatively stable. The main reservoir exploitation-related processes found were: 1) production of reinjection returns;for this, it was possible to distinguish a) wells that produce liquid and steam from injection, and b) wells that produce steam from injection and sometimes condensed steam from injection;2) boiling: two types of boiling were identified: a) boiling with steam gain, and b) boiling with steam loss. The results indicated that an effective reservoir recharge occurs since very moderate production declining rates were found.

Cultivation of Microalgae <i>Monoraphidium</i>sp., in the Plant Pilot the Grand Valle Bio Energy, for Biodiesel Production

At present, Brazil imports approximately 11 billion liters/year of diesel. With the interruption of the works in the new Petrobras refineries, the projection is that by 2025 this volume will increase to 24.2 billion liters of diesel/year. In this sense, the biodiesel factory Grand Valle Bio Energy Ltda., located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in conjunction with the FAPERJ makes some investments in technology development for the cultivation and use of microalgae as an alternative raw material in the production of biodiesel. Based on arguments previously said, this work presents the results of the microalgae cultivation Monoraphidium sp. in photobioreactors the pilot plant of the company. The installation with an area of 120 m2 is included with 2 open photobioreactors of type falling film (20 m × 1 m), with a cascade of 18mm and capacity of 4000 L. The lineage cultivated is selected from previous ecophysiological studies that are identified as promising for biodiesel production by having a high potential for the production of lipids. This lineage is maintained at collection of the stock of cultures Laboratory of Green Technologies of the School of Chemistry/ UFRJ. The cultivation was performed in means ASM-1 (Gorham et al., 1964), initial pH 8.0, with aeration and circulation average of 8 hours a day during 19 days. The culture was started with an inoculum of 1 × 107 cel/ml. The lipid production was determined in two phases of growth: on day 4 (exponential phase) and 15 day (stationary phase). For the determination and quantification of lipid content, two different methods were assessed for a sample of biomass, submitted to the same processes the separation and drying. The results showed the methodology of Bligh & Dyer with modifications as the most efficient in extracting lipids. The total lipid content of the biomass Monoraphidium sp. was 30.58%. The growth rate varied between 0.74 ± 0.01 and 0.68 ± 0.02.

Rare earths have been extensively developed in recent years, however, new hosts allow high excitation and emission efficiency, in this sense, gadolinium vanadate has been extensively studied and in previous works it has been widely used in down conversion systems. Because of the strong absorption of the VO4 groups and efficient energy transfer from GdVO4 to lanthanide ions, in this work its up-conversion properties were studied when is co-doped with Yb3+, X3+ where X = Tm, Er and Ho. The powders synthesized presented a high crystallinity and a rounded morphology and exhibit a high luminescence when are excited with IR radiation.

Background: 70% of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage (III or IV) of the disease and, in turn, with a high prevalence of peritoneal carcinosis and ascites, which leads to progressive malnutrition in patients, with the consequent deterioration of their general condition. There is a very important relationship between nutritional status, quality of life, survival, and the ability to tolerate multidisciplinary treatment of peritoneal carcinosis. Methods: A phase II, open-label, single-center, non-randomised clinical trial was conducted that included 36 patients with advanced disease who were administered the nutritional supplement Ocoxin, 30 ml twice a day, beginning one week before chemotherapy (CT) based on carboplatin/paclitaxel, of which they receive three cycles with neoadjuvant intent. Ocoxin treatment was continued during chemotherapy and for three weeks after completion of the last cycle, as well as during any periods for which this treatment was discontinued due to toxicity. The effect of Ocoxin on the quality of life was assessed through the QLQ C30 and QLQ OV28 questionnaires from the start of treatment until the end of the follow-up period. In addition, the Karnofsky Index and nutritional parameters were assessed. Results: There were no significant differences between adverse events versus baseline values, except in leukocytes, lymphocytes, neutrophils, ALT, and AST. There was no deterioration of the QoL scales, except for those related to the effects of chemotherapy and alopecia. Conclusions: Ocoxin as an adjuvant to chemotherapy appears to improve better tolerance to chemotherapy, showed a good safety profile, and improved quality of life. For further information on Ocoxin neoadjuvant therapy benefits, a phase III clinical trial will be needed.
