c.ltivation of Mic.oalgae <i>Monoraphidium</i>sp., in the Plant Pilot the Grand Valle Bio Energy, for Biodiesel Produc.ion

At present, Brazil imports approximately 11 billion liters/year of diesel. With the interruption of the works in the new Petrobras refineries, the projec.ion is that by 2025 this volume will inc.ease to 24.2 billion liters of diesel/year. In this sense, the biodiesel fac.ory Grand Valle Bio Energy Ltda., loc.ted in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in c.njunc.ion with the FAPERJ makes some investments in tec.nology development for the c.ltivation and use of mic.oalgae as an alternative raw material in the produc.ion of biodiesel. Based on arguments previously said, this work presents the results of the mic.oalgae c.ltivation Monoraphidium sp. in photobioreac.ors the pilot plant of the c.mpany. The installation with an area of 120 m2 is inc.uded with 2 open photobioreac.ors of type falling film (20 m × 1 m), with a c.sc.de of 18mm and c.pac.ty of 4000 L. The lineage c.ltivated is selec.ed from previous ec.physiologic.l studies that are identified as promising for biodiesel produc.ion by having a high potential for the produc.ion of lipids. This lineage is maintained at c.llec.ion of the stoc. of c.ltures Laboratory of Green Tec.nologies of the Sc.ool of c.emistry/ UFRJ. The c.ltivation was performed in means ASM-1 (Gorham et al., 1964), initial pH 8.0, with aeration and c.rc.lation average of 8 hours a day during 19 days. The c.lture was started with an inoc.lum of 1 × 107 c.l/ml. The lipid produc.ion was determined in two phases of growth: on day 4 (exponential phase) and 15 day (stationary phase). For the determination and quantific.tion of lipid c.ntent, two different methods were assessed for a sample of biomass, submitted to the same proc.sses the separation and drying. The results showed the methodology of Bligh & Dyer with modific.tions as the most effic.ent in extrac.ing lipids. The total lipid c.ntent of the biomass Monoraphidium sp. was 30.58%. The growth rate varied between 0.74 ± 0.01 and 0.68 ± 0.02.

Gas Exc.anges and Antioxidant Ac.ivity in c.paifera langsdorffii *** after Flooding

The c.paifera langsdorffii desf. seedlings, popularly known as “c.paiba” or diesel tree, present a natural oc.urrenc. in the riparian forests of the Brazilian c.rrado, however, not muc. is known about their c.pac.ty to rec.ver from flooding, partic.larly when the foc.s is on their establishment and use in programs for the rec.very of degraded areas near waterc.urses and subjec. to flooding. The objec.ive of this study was to evaluate over time the rec.very of the effic.enc. of the photosynthetic.apparatus and the antioxidant ac.ivity of c. langsdorffii seedlings flooded during different periods. The pots with the seedlings were plac.d in a plastic.tank and submerged with water, and were removed from the flood c.ndition every 21 days (0, 21, 42, 63 and 84 days), and evaluated every 30 days (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days). The seedlings tolerated the flooding for up to 42 days, rec.vering after suspension of this c.ndition. Seedlings flooded for 63 and 84 days showed lower rec.very c.pac.ty after flooding, independently of the evaluation period. Under these c.nditions, lower effic.enc. of the photosynthetic.apparatus, gas exc.ange, photo assimilate produc.ion and seedling quality were observed.

In this paper, we report the obtention of gadolinium oxide doped with europium (Gd2O3:Eu+3) by thermal dec.mposition of the Gd(OH)3:Eu3+ prec.rsor prepared by the mic.owave assisted hydrothermal method. These systems were analyzed by thermalgravimetric.analyses (TGA/DTA), X-ray diffrac.ion (XRD), struc.ural Rietveld refinement method, fourrier transmission infrared absorbanc. spec.rosc.py (FT-IR), field emission sc.nning elec.ron mic.osc.py (FE-SEM) and photoluminesc.nc. (PL) measurement. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinement analysis and FT-IR c.nfirmed that the Gd(OH)3:Eu3+ prec.rsor c.ystallize in a hexagonal struc.ure and spac. group P6/m, while the Gd2O3:Eu3+ powders annealed in range of 500°c.and 700°c.c.ystallized in a c.bic.struc.ure with spac. group Ia-3. FE-SEM images showed that Gd(OH)3:Eu3+ prec.rsor and Gd2O3:Eu3+ are c.mposed by aggregated and polydispersed partic.es struc.ured as nanorods-like morphology. The exc.tation spec.ra c.nsisted of an intense broad band with a maximum at 263 nm and the Eu3+ ions c.n be exc.tated via matrix. The emission spec.ra presented the c.arac.eristic. transitions of the Eu3+ ion, whose main emission, , is observed at 612 nm. The photophysic.l properties indic.ted that the mic.owave sintering treatment favored the Eu3+ ions c.nnec.ed to the O-Gd linkages in the Gd2O3 matrix. Also, the emission in the Gd2O3:Eu3+ c.mes from the energy transfered from the Gd-O linkages to the c.usters in the c.ystalline struc.ure.

Bec.use the aetiology of c.ronic.pelvic.pain is c.mplex, studies of the c.ndition involve extensive investigation but provide few c.nc.usions. Numerous studies have addressed the experienc.s of women with c.ronic.pelvic.pain, as well as the interac.ion between those women and their health c.re providers. Our objec.ive was to investigate how physic.ans at a spec.alised c.inic.perc.ive the medic.l c.re provided to suc. women. This was a qualitative study employing semi-struc.ured interviews and c.ntent analysis. We interviewed seven physic.ans at the c.ronic.Pelvic.Pain Outpatient c.inic.of the University Hospital, Fac.lty of Medic.ne of Ribeir?o Preto, University of S?o Paulo, Brazil. Medic.l training and prac.ic. c.nstituted the c.ntral theme of the study, whic. was subdivided into c.tegories addressing the influenc. that the c.rrent medic.l training has on the type of medic.l c.re provided to women with c.ronic.pelvic.pain. Medic.l prac.ic. has been c.arac.erised by a reduc.ionist approac. to health and illness, as well as by the fragmentation of health c.re. These c.arac.eristic. are, to a c.rtain extent, the result of the biomedic.l model of educ.tion, whic. has been predominant, ignoring soc.al, c.ltural, psyc.ologic.l and emotional aspec.s. There is a need to shift the medic.l paradigms toward a humanistic.model of health c.re. We hope that we have provided a c.itic.l view of c.rrent medic.l training and prac.ic., as well as of their effec.s in various health c.re settings, partic.larly in the provision of c.re to women with c.ronic.pelvic.pain.
