Carbon nanomaterials offer excellent prospects as therapeutic agents,and among them,graphene quantum dots(GQDs)have gained considerable interest thanks to their aqueous solubility and intrinsic fluorescence,which enable their possible use in theranostic approaches,if their biocompatibility and favorable pharmacokinetic are *** prepared ultra-small GQDs using an alternative,reproducible,top-down synthesis starting from graphene oxide with a nearly 100%*** materials were tested to assess their safety,demonstrating good biocompatibility and ability in passing the ultrafiltration barrier using an in vitro *** leads to renal excretion without affecting the ***,we studied the GQDs in vivo biodistribution confirming their efficient renal clearance,and we demonstrated that the internalization mechanism into podocytes is ***,considering the reported characteristics,it appears possible to vehiculate compounds to kidneys by means of GQDs,overcoming problems related to lysosomal degradation.

Continuous Apomorphine Infusion in Patients with Advanced Parkinson’s Disease with Varying Degrees of Functional Impairment

Introduction: Continuous apomorphine infusion (CAI) is effective in improving complications in advanced Parkinson’s disease (APD). The effectiveness and tolerance of CAI in patients with APD with varying degrees of functional impairment was studied. Methods: In this comparative observational study, consecutive APD who started treatment with CAI were included. They were classified into two groups of functional impairment: A) moderate (Schwab and england (S & e) = 60% - 80% and Hoehn and Yahr (H & Y) = 2 - 3;Group (A), and (B) severe (S & e 3;Group B). Clinical follow-up was performed with concomitant medication and CAI adjustment at 3, 6 and 12 months. Clinical evaluation included a dyskinesia diary and AIMS, S & e, NPI, NMSS and HADS questionnaires. Results: eighteen patients participated (A = 9 and B = 9) with eP diagnosed 7 (A) and 13 (B) years before. Their baseline dose of levodopa was 728 mg (A) and 925 mg (B), which did not change during follow-up. Dopamine agonists were progressively reduced in both groups. Progressive titration of CAI resulted in abandonment of apomorphine bolus administration. Both groups experienced improvements in all variables, higher in group A;motor fluctuations = 69% (A), 53% (B);AIMS = 82% (A), 71 (B);S & e = 32% (A), 18% (B);NMS = 62% (A), 19% (B);NPI = 75% (A), 50% (B);HADS (anxiety) = 26% (A), 21% (B);HADS (depression) = 52% (A), 31% (B). Adverse effects were generally mild and resolved without reducing CAI dose. There were no withdrawals. Conclusions: Patients with APD and moderate functional impairment treated with CAI may obtain greater functional, cognitive and emotional improvement than patients more severely affected.

Logistic Regression Modelling for Complex Survey Data with an Application for Bed Net Use in Mozambique

Logistic Regression Models have been widely used in many areas of research, namely in health sciences, to study risk factors associated to diseases. Many population based surveys, such as Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), are constructed assuming complex sampling, i.e., probabilistic, stratified and multistage sampling, with unequal weights in the observations;this complex design must be taken into account in order to have reliable results. However, this very relevant issue usually is not well analyzed in the literature. The aim of the study is to specify the logistic regression model with complex sample design, and to demonstrate how to estimate it using the R software survey package. More specifically, we used Mozambique Demographic Health and Survey data 2011 (MDHS 2011) to illustrate how to correct for the effect of sample design in the particular case of estimating the risk factors associated to the probability of using mosquito bed nets. Our results show that in the presence of complex sampling, appropriate methods must be used both in descriptive and inferential statistics.

Iron homeostasis and H63D mutations in alcoholics with and without liver disease

MM： To evaluate the prevalence of HFe gene mutation and indices of disturbed iron homeostasis in alcoholics with and without liver disease. MeTHODS： One hundred and fifty-three heavy drinkers （defined as alcohol consumption 〉 80 g/d for at least 5 years） were included in the study. These comprised 78 patients with liver disease [liver disease alcoholics （LDA）] in whom the presence of liver disease was confirmed by liver biopsy or clinical evidence of hepatic decompensation, and 75 subjects with no evidence of liver disease, determined by normal liver tests on two occasions [non-liver disease alcoholics （NLDA）], were consecutively enrolled. Serum markers of iron status and HFe C282Y and H63D mutations were determined. HFe genotyping was compared with data obtained in healthy blood donors from the same geographical area. ReSULTS： Gender ratio was similar in both study groups. LDA patients were older than NLDA patients （52 ± 10 years vs 48 ± 11 years, P = 0.03）. One third and one fifth of the study population had serum transferrin saturation （TS） greater than 45% and 60% respectively. Serum iron levels were similar in both groups. However, LDA patients had higher TS （51 ± 27 vs 36 ± 13, P 〈 0.001） and ferritin levels （559 ± 607 ng/mL vs 159 ± 122 ng/mL, P 〈 0.001）, and lower total iron binding capacity （TIBC）（241 ± 88 μg/dL vs 279 ± 40 μg/dL, P = 0.001）. The odds ratio for having liver disease with TS greater than 45% was 2.20 （95% confidence interval （CI）： 1.37-3.54）. There was no difference in C282Y allelic frequency between the two groups. However, H63D was more frequent in LDA patients （0.25 vs 0.16, P = 0.03）. LDA patients had a greater probability of carrying at least one HFe mutation than NLDA patients （49.5% vs 31.6%, P = 0.02）. The odds ratio for LDA in patients with H63D mutation was 1.57 （95% CI： 1.02-2.40）. CONCLUSION： The present study confirms the presence of iron overload in alcoholics, which was more severe in the subset of subjects with liver disease,

Projecting Health Outcomes for Portuguese Ageing Population: Challenges and Opportunities

Objectives: To project health outcomes for the period 2011-2031, in the Portuguese population aged 65 years and over, considering the expected changes in its demographic and educational structure. Methods: Demographic projections were produced using the multistate cohort component method. Logistic regression models were fitted to estimate current differences in health outcomes, using data from the Portuguese Health Survey. Such differences were applied to the projection results, in order to project the prevalence of “poor” self-reported health status, functional limitations and disability. Results: Our results point to a future improvement in the considered health outcomes. The prevalence of “poor” self-reported health status, functional limitations and disability will decrease in both genders, but will continue to be higher among women than men. Discussion: Beyond age and gender, other determinants of health, like education, should be considered when studying the possible evolution of health outcomes in an ageing population.

The limitations of biomedecine to provide effective solutions to certain pandemics has led many people to turn to alternative therapies. These palliative solutions, particularly phytomedecines, are much sought after for disease prevention and treatment. The Baka, a group of forest-dwelling people, hold knowledge on how wild plants can be effective in treating many illnesses. However, the greatest challenge for the identification of traditional medicines depends on the veracity of the information provided during ethnobotanic surveys by user populations. The present study describes forest plants used by the Baka and confirmed by them as being employed for traditional medicine. We carried out ethnobotanical surveys between 2019 and 2021 in 221 households within four districts of the eastern and Southern Region of Cameroon. We used indices of significant use and performance applied to all mentioned species, alongside searches in the literature. The statistical tools used to distinguish the different groups/districts is Pearson’s X2 test. A total of 378 plant species were identified of 270 genera and 85 families. ethnobotanical indices allowed to identify the most confirmed and efficient plants for several health problems. A pairwise comparison of these indices showed a significant correlation with a p-value e-16 and a dissimilarity distance less than 0.5. Some plants selected are widely cited in other regions and/or countries for the same health problems. The presence of active molecules responsible for their biological activity was also proven, justifying their use in traditional medicine. This paper examines the potential to enhance the value of Cameroon’s pharmacopeia by integrating various ethnobotanical indices. It aims to discover new therapeutic molecules and develop improved traditional products from the diverse plant species documented. The findings indicate opportunities to advance both local and global healthcare solutions.

Aphid populations showing differential levels of virulence on Capsicum accessions

The green peach aphid,Myzus persicae,is one of the most threatening pests in pepper cultivation and growers would benefit from resistant ***,we identified two Capsicum acessions as susceptible and three as resistant to *** using an aphid population originating from the Netherlands(NL).Later on we identified an aphid population originating from a diferent gcographical region(Switserland,SW)that was virulent on all tested Capsicum *** objeetive of the current work is to describe in detail diferent aspects of the interaction between two aphid populations and two sclected Capsicum acessions(one that was susceptible[PB2013046]and one that was resistant[PB2013071]to population NL),including biochemical processes *** penetration graph(ePG)recordings showed similar feeding activities for both aphid populations on *** acession PB2013071 the aphid population sw was able to devote significantly more time to phloem ingestion than population *** also studied plant defense response and found that plants of acession PB2013046 could not induce an accumulation of reactive oxygen species and callose formation after infestation with either aphid ***,plants of PB2013071 induced a stronger defense response after infestation by population NL than after infestation by population *** on these results,population SW of *** seems to have overcome the resistance of PB2013071 that prevented feeding of aphids from NL *** potential mechanism by which SW population overcomes the resistance is discussed.

Urinary bladder cancer(UBC)is a heterogeneous disease with highly variable clinical outcomes and responses to *** some advances in the molecular understanding of UBC,this knowledge still has not been translated to the clinic in terms of improvements in the prognosis and treatment of *** urinary bladder tumor models representative of the human disease in terms of histology and behavior are needed to study factors involved in tumor initiation,progression and ***,accurate model systems would facilitate identification of new therapeutic targets and predictive markers that could lead to optimization of existing therapies and development of new *** established cancer cell lines derived from human urinary bladder tumors representing different grades and stages have been used as experimental models for UBC *** cell lines reflect some of the genetic and morphologic alterations observed in human urothelial carcinoma and serve as simplified models to study the behavior of cancer cells in ***,their translational potential is limited due to the artificial conditions,in which the cells are maintained,grown and *** models offer a more complex and realistic model for the establishment,development,and progression of tumors as well as to evaluate new therapeutic *** the years,the authors'group has worked with several UBC cell lines,established and characterized chemically induced UBC models,and patient-derived xenografts *** this study,the authors will provide a summary of the UBC models developed by their group,analyze their translational potential and weaknesses,and define areas that remain to be explored.

Genetic and Phenotypic Parameters in the Selection of Upland Rice Genotypes

To assist in upland rice breeding programs, estimated genetic and phenotypic parameters are extremely important in the selection of superior lines. Thus, the objective of this study was estimate the genetic and phenotypic parameters of upland rice lines of the breeding program of UFLA in partnership with embrapa Arroz e Feijao and epamig. The experiment was installed in an experimental area of the Department of Agriculture at UFLA. It was evaluated 36 upland rice lines of the preliminary trial of the 2014/15 season, in randomized blocks, with three replications and plots consisted of five rows and each row has four meters. For this, it was evaluated the characters: plant height (cm), yield (kg·ha-1), 100-grain weight, days until flowering, percentage of filled grains and rice blast severity. The variance analysis and genetic parameters were estimated using the software SAS. To evaluate the experimental precision was estimated the accuracy, which varied between 63% and 98%, showing experimental precision, moderate to high. The lines differed significantly for all characters, meaning there is genetic variability among genotypes evaluated. With intensity of selection of 10% of lines, it was obtained a genetic gain of 325.29 kg·ha-1 in the character productivity, a plant height (cm) reduction in 5.50 cm, and days until flowering, with a reduction of 9.23 days, with selection of earlier plants. The estimated values for heritability ranged from 38% - 96%. estimates confirm the possible success with the selection of the upland rice lines for these characters.
