The rising number of vehicles on roadways expedites the urge to increase efforts in implementing monitoring systems that look after road pavement conditions. This rising in number of vehicles on roadways also cause more damages and distresses on road pavement. Road pavement conditions should be accurately evaluated to identify the severity of pavement damages and types of pavement distress. Therefore, monitoring systems are considered a significant step of maintenance processes. Paved roads and unpaved roads require regular maintenance to provide for and preserve users' usability, accessibility, and safety. Transport agents and researches would spend a lot of time and money in inspecting some sections of the roadway surface;that inspection would then be followed by results recording and data analysis to diagnose the type of treatment required. These monitoring systems have been developed using various methods that include smart technologies and prepared equipment. Many related studies evaluate road pavement degradation and distress, while others focus on identifying the best maintenance monitoring approach in terms of time and cost. This paper set out to explore different monitoring techniques used to evaluate road pavement surface condition. Also, this study introduces dynamic and static monitoring systems used in both paved and unpaved roads to identify the severity of pavement degradations and types of pavement distress on road surfaces and also this study explains the used equipment in the previous monitoring studies.

Cholangiocarcinomas (CCA) are a group of rare cancers with an incidence of about 1.26 per 100,000 people. The disease reflects one of three different subtypes: intrahepatic, perihilar or hilar and distal cholangiocarcinoma. The preferred modality of definitive therapy is surgical resection with or without adjuvant therapy, however the majority of patients with this disease do not present at an early stage. Some efforts to improve survival rates have come in the form of offering neoadjuvant therapy prior to surgical resection or liver transplantation. Some new protocols are in the process of development for neoadjuvant therapy. Despite advancements in locally advanced or borderline resectable lesions, most patient present at an advanced stage. The mainstay of treatment for advanced stage disease is chemotherapy regardless of location. The mainstay of treatment in fit patients is the combination of gemcitabine and cisplatin. The addition of nab-paclitaxel to this backbone is currently being evaluated in phase III trial. In addition, the role of targeted therapy is currently being studied extensively through multiple different mutational pathways including isocitrate dehydrogenase-1 (IDH1), fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and ERBB2 (HER2/neu). CCA remains a significant challenge in medicine, however recent studies have shown that there is significant interest in advancing therapy in the form of neoadjuvant, adjuvant and palliative intent treatment.

AIM： To compare the accuracy of two different methods of preoperative marking for toric intraocular lens（IOL） implantation, bubble marker versus pendulum marker, as a means of establishing the reference point for the final alignment of the toric IOL to achieve an outcome as close as possible to emmetropia.·METHODS： Toric IOLs were implanted in 180 eyes of110 patients. One group（55 patients） had preoperative marking of both eyes done with bubble marker（ASICO AE-2791TBL） and the other group（55 patients） with pendulum marker（Rumex 誖 3-193）. Reference marks were placed at 3-, 6-, and 9-o＇clock positions on the limbus. Slit-lamp photographs were analyzed using Adobe Photoshop（version 7.0）. Amount of alignment error（in degrees） induced in each group was measured.· RESULTS： Mean absolute rotation error in the preoperative marking in the horizontal axis was 2.42±1.71 in the bubble marker group and 2.83 ±2.31 in the pendulum marker group（P =0.501）. Sixty percent of the pendulum group and 70% of the bubble group had rotation error ≤3（P =0.589）, and 90% eyes of the pendulum group and 96.7% of the bubble group had rotation error ≤5（P =0.612）.·CONCLUSION： Both preoperative marking techniques result in approximately 3 of alignment error. Both marking techniques are simple, predictable, reproducible and easy to perform.

A Scoring System to Assess Patients with Diabetes: Nutech Functional Score

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia. The symptoms of hyperglycemia include polyuria, polydypsia, polyphagia, blurred vision and weight loss. Various diagnostic tests are used for the diagnosis of DM in patients, but the findings of these tests cannot be assumed to be completely valid. This study aimed at developing a novel scoring system to assess the patients suffering from DM. Method: We assessed the patients based on various diagnostic tests available for DM and prepared a single list of these tests. The tests were categorized and graded based on the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. Further, we coverted the grades into numeric values for easy use. Results: NFS for diabetes is an 11-point scoring system that assesses the patient’s condition before and after therapy. To facilitate the conduct of probability based studies, we have converted the scores into numeric values in the range of (0, 1). Each symptom is graded as (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) that runs in BAD → GOOD direction. Conclusion: NFS is a beneficial scoring system that can be used worldwide to assess the patients with DM.

A Functional Scoring System to Assess the Level of Impairment in Patients with Low Vision Impairment

Background: Low vision is referred to as visual impairment (VI) if it is not cured through surgery, drugs, spectacles or contact lenses. It interferes with day-to-day living activities and is associated with the major eye blinding diseases. Numerous tests are used to carry out diagnosis of VI, but their outcomes are unreliable. Objective: To develop a functional scoring system, for accessing the ailment of patients with VI based on observations and clinical symptoms. Methods and Findings: We prepared the list of all possible symptoms that were associated with low vision. Based on this list, we established a scoring system, Nutech Functional Score (NFS), which is a 33-point positional and directional scoring system that evaluates the patient with VI. The scores have been converted into numeric values for conducting probability based studies. All the symptoms are graded between 1 to 5 that runs in BAD → GOOD direction. Conclusion: NFS is a distinctive tool that can be used globally to evaluate the patients with low vision.

Use of Human Embryonic Stem Cells in the Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus: A Case Series

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM), a metabolic disorder, is known to be highly prevalent in people aged 40 - 60 years in developing countries whereas in developed countries, it mostly affects people above the age of 60 years. It is of two types: DM type I, an autoimmune disorder that mostly onsets after an infection and DM type II that is commonly associated with obesity. Several treatments are available for the treatment of DM, but none has successfully cured diabetes. Nowadays, stem cell therapy is being investigated for use in the treatment of DM and has shown positive results. Case Report: Our study presented results of three diabetic patients who were treated with human embryonic stem cell (hESC) therapy. Following the therapy, blood glucose levels were reduced. An improvement was observed in eye sight, stamina, gait pattern endurance, mental focus ability and muscle strength. There was a reduction in secondary side effects of high blood sugar such as affectation of cardiac, kidneys, polyneuropathy, vision etc. No adverse events and teratoma formation were observed after the treatment. Conclusion: It was concluded that hESCs showed good therapeutic potential in the treatment of patients with diabetes.
