Association of metabolic NCD risk factors with oral, breast and cervical precancers and cancers in India

Objective To find an association between metabolic non-communicable disease(NCD)risk factors(high blood pressure(BP),high random blood sugar(RBS)and overweight/obesity)and oral,breast,cervical cancers/precancerous or potentially malignant conditions.Design This is an observational study using convenience sampling.The participants were screened through opportunistic or population-based screening.setting The study was conducted at a health promotion clinic(HPC)located in Northern India under the Indian Council of Medical Research.HPC is a screening clinic where screening is done for hypertension(HT),diabetes mellitus(DM),obesity,and oral,breast and cervical cancers.The study was conducted between December 2016 and January 2019.Participant The number of participants screened was 8352(6712 women and 1640 men).All consenting men and women above 18 years were included.All participants were screened for oral cancer,DM,HT and obesity.All women were also screened for breast and cervical cancers.Cervical screening was done for non-pregnant women 21 years and above with history of sexual activity.result Oral potentially malignant disease(OPMD)was the most prevalent,followed by breast cancer,oral cancer,cervical cancer and cervical precancer.High RBS had a strong association with oral cancer(OR=2.29,95%CI 1.09 to 4.82,p=0.03)and breast cancer(OR=1.95,95%CI 1.01 to 3.76,p=0.05).High BP had a strong association with breast cancer(OR=2.50,95%CI 1.43 to 4.35,p<0.0001).An inverse association was noted between oral cancer and overweight/obesity(OR=0.20,95%CI 0.08 to 0.48,p<0.0001).Current tobacco use was strongly associated with oral cancer(OR=6.51,95%CI 3.63 to 11.67,p<0.0001)and OPMD(OR=9.82,95%CI 8.13 to 11.86,p<0.0001).No association was elicited between the metabolic NCD risk factors and cervical cancer/precancer.Conclusions The study reaffirms that NCD metabolic risk factors determine oral and breast cancers.Besides NCD risk factors,current tobacco use was a strong determinant of OPMD and oral cancer.Hence,primary and primor

Interface Engineering of NixSy@MnOxHy Nanorods to Efficiently Enhance Overall-Water-Splitting Activity and Stability

Exploring highly active and stable transition metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts has recently attracted extensive research interests for achieving high inherent activity, abundant exposed active sites, rapid mass transfer, and strong structure stability for overall water splitting. Herein, an interface engineering coupled with shell-protection strategy was applied to construct three-dimensional(3D) core-shell NixSy@MnOxHy heterostructure nanorods grown on nickel foam(NixSy@MnOxHy/NF) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst. NixSy@MnOxHy/NF was synthesized via a facile hydrothermal reaction followed by an electrodeposition process. The X-ray absorption fine structure spectra reveal that abundant Mn-S bonds connect the heterostructure interfaces of N ixSy@MnOxHy, leading to a strong electronic interaction, which improves the intrinsic activities of hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction(OER). Besides, as an efficient protective shell, the MnOxHy dramatically inhibits the electrochemical corrosion of the electrocatalyst at high current densities, which remarkably enhances the stability at high potentials. Furthermore, the 3D nanorod structure not only exposes enriched active sites, but also accelerates the electrolyte diffusion and bubble desorption. Therefore, NixSy@MnOxHy/NF exhibits exceptional bifunctional activity and stability for overall water splitting, with low overpotentials of 326 and 356 mV for OER at 100 and 500 mA cm^(–2), respectively, along with high stability of 150 h at 100 mA cm^(–2). Furthermore, for overall water splitting, it presents a low cell voltage of 1.529 V at 10 mA cm^(–2), accompanied by excellent stability at 100 mA cm^(–2) for 100 h. This work sheds a light on exploring highly active and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts by the interface engineering coupled with shell-protection strategy.

Insights from principal component analysis applied to Py-GCMS study of Indian coals and their solvent extracted clean coal products

The present work aims at studying five Indian coals and their solvent extracted clean coal products using Py-GCMS analysis and correlating the characterization data using theoretical principal component analysis.The pyrolysis products of the original coals and the super clean coals were classified as mono-,di-and tri-aromatics,while other prominent products that were obtained included cycloalkanes,n-alkanes,and alkenes ranging from C_(10)-C_(29).The principal component analysis is a dimensionality reduction technique that reduced the number of input variables in the characterization dataset and gave inferences on the relative composition of constituent compounds and functional groups and structural insights based on scores and loading plots which were consistent with the experimental observations.ATR-FTIR studies confirmed the reduced concentration of ash in the super clean coals and the presence of aromatics.The Py-GCMS data and the ATR-FTIR spectra led to the conclusion that the super clean coals behaved similarly for both coking and noncoking coals with high aromatic concentrations as compared to the raw coal.Neyveli lignite super clean coal was found to show some structural similarity with the original coals,whereas the other super clean coals showed structural similarity within themselves but not with their original coal samples confirming the selective action of the e,N solvent in solubilizing the polycondensed aromatic structures in the coal samples.

Fabrication of ceramic coatings on the biodegradable ZM21 magnesium alloy by PEO coupled EPD followed by laser texturing process

Zirconia(ZrO_2)incorporated ceramic coatings were fabricated on biodegradable ZM21 Mg alloy by the PEO coupled with EPD process.Subsequently,the sample surface was modified by laser texturing to improve the corrosion resistance,roughness and cell proliferation and growth properties.The corrosion performance of the fabricated samples along with the substrate was studied by electrochemical measurements under simulated body fluid(SBF)environment.The cell direct contact assay was conducted for the substrate and fabricated samples using L-929 mouse fibroblast cells for 24 h.The phase contrast images of cell direct contact assay revealed that fabricated samples exhibited better contact and response with the fibroblast cells,compared to the substrate.The addition of nanoparticles in the PEO process,called PEO coupled EPD process,resulted in attaining a higher thickness and improved corrosion performance of the samples than the PEO coated samples.Among all the samples,laser surface textured PEO,and PEO-EPD coated samples unveiled enhanced corrosion resistance,cell growth,thereby enabling it as a suitable prototype for biodegradable implant applications.

Sensory-motor responses to mechanical stimulation of the esophagus after sensitization with acid

AIM: Sensitization most likely plays an important role in chronic pain disorders, and such sensitization can be mimicked by experimental acid perfusion of the esophagus.The current study systematically investigated the sensory and motor responses of the esophagus to controlled mechanical stimuli before and after sensitization.METHODS: Thirty healthy subjects were included.Distension of the distal esophagus with a balloon was performed before and after perfusion with 0.1 mol/L hydrochloric acid for 30 min. An impedance planimetry system was used to measure cross-sectional area,volume, pressure, and tension during the distensions. A new model allowed evaluation of the phasic contractions by the tension during contractions as a function of the initial muscle length before the contraction (comparable to the Frank-Starling law for the heart). Length-tension diagrams were used to evaluate the muscle tone before and after relaxation of the smooth muscle with butylscopolamine.RESULTS: The sensitization resulted in allodynia and hyperalgesia to the distension volumes, and the degree of sensitization was related to the infused volume of acid. Furthermore, a nearly 50% increase in the evoked referred pain was seen after sensitization. The mechanical analysis demonstrated hyper-reactivity of the esophagus following acid perfusion, with an increased number and force of the phasic contractions, but the muscle tone did not change.CONCLUSION: Acid perfusion of the esophagus sensitizes the sensory pathways and facilitates secondary contractions.The new model can be used to study abnormal sensorymotor mechanisms in visceral organs.

Molecular Mapping of QTLs for Drought Related Traits at Seedling Stage under PEG Induced Stress Conditions in Rice

Differential response of seedling characteristics under water stress conditions is known to be associated with drought resistance in rice and elucidation of its genetics could be of help in breeding for tolerance to the stress. A recombinant inbred population derived from the cross between a semi-dwarf variety IR64 and landrace INRC10192 was grown in hydroponic culture and phenotyped for varied responses of seedlings to water deficit imposed by poly ethylene glycol (PEG). The ratio between mean value of seedling trait under stress and control conditions was used for assessing drought tolerance. In all 19 putative QTL relating to five seedling traits viz., shoot length, maximum root length, shoot dry weight, root dry weight and root to shoot dry weight ratio under PEG induced stress conditions were identified confirms that the traditional tall landraces as the one chosen for the study posses hitherto unexploited drought tolerant genes and utilization of them as potential donors in breeding for yield enhancement would be rewarding. They might be useful for improving drought resistance of rice by marker assisted selection/breeding.

Primary uterine non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a rare malignancy. We here describe 2 patients who presented with cervical growth, stage IE, diffuse large B cell histology. Both were treated with chemotherapy followed by involved field radiotherapy in 1 patient. They achieved complete clinical and radiological response. Data of 101 patients collected from the literature are reviewed.
