Microalgae have the potential of.becoming an important energy source, and hydrothermal liquef.ction（HTL） is a promising technology f.r that, producing an organic liquid energy carrier usually called ’bio?oil’ or ’bio?crude’, besides gas, aqueous and solid products. The interest in this technology f.r microalgae conversion has signif.cantly increased in the last years, leading to the publication of.several studies. However, the knowledge produced is rather f.agmentary. A detailed analysis of.the available data is presented in this work, bringing together all the inf.rmation currently available. The conclusions of.this review work will be the guidelines f.r f.ture experimental work with several algae species. The intention is to assess the ef.ect of.algae strain and –properties under otherwise identical conditions on the biocrude oil yield and composition.

A particle sub-model describing the bed characteristics of.a bubbling f.uidised bed is presented. Atomisation air, applied at high pressures via a nozzle positioned above the bed f.r spray f.rmation, is incorporated in the model since its presence has a prof.und inf.uence on the bed characteristics, though the spray itself.is not yet considered. A particle sub-model is developed using well-known empirical relations f.r particle drag f.rce, bubble growth and velocity and particle distribution above the f.uidised-bed surf.ce. Simple but ef.ective assumptions and abstractions were made concerning bubble distribution, particle ejection at the bed surf.ce and the behaviour of.atomisation air f.ow upon impacting the surf.ce of.a bubbling f.uidised bed, The model was shown to be capable of.predicting the f.uidised bed characteristics in terms of.bed heights, voidage distributions and solids volume f.actions with good accuracy in less than 5 min of.calculation time on a regular desktop PC. It is theref.re suitable f.r incorporation into general process control models aimed at dynamic control f.r process ef.iciency and product quality in top-spray f.uidised bed coating processes.

A mathematical model predicting the overall particle motion in liquid-sprayed gas-solid f.uidised beds has been developed. The proposed model is a superposition of.bubble-induced particle motion and particle random walk. The model was validated using experimental particle residence times f.om literature. Good agreement between experimental and model-predicted residence times was obtained f.r those cases where atomisation air was absent and on the condition of.the inclusion of.a so-called ＂dead zone＂. The ＂dead zone＂, being a region of.stagnant particles in the annular bottom part of.the bed, has also been previously reported in literature. In case atomisation air was present, a less f.vourable agreement was seen between the model and the experiment. As the atomisatinn air has been shown to signif.cantly alter the ejection distance of.particles in the f.eeboard, recalibration of.the ejection height parameter has been demonstrated to obtain an acceptable agreement between model-predicted and experimental data.

Peat remains the primary constituent of.horticultural growing media in prof.ssional ***,use of.peat in horticultural growing media results in greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss due to excavation of.natural *** is gaining attention as a sustainable alternative to peat use in *** study examined the potential of.biochar produced f.om a particular type of.sawmill residue,as a partial replacement f.r peat in horticultural growing *** treatments including peat only,biochar only,biochar and peat in 1:1,1:3,and 3:1(V/V)ratios were *** addition of.biochar into growing media increased the pH and EC of.the ***,physical properties(air-f.lled porosity and water holding capacity)were negatively af.ected with the increase in biochar content in the *** to the germination test results,biochar signif.cantly improved germination and the shoot and root length of.germinated seeds of.cress,lettuce and tomato when compared to peat-only and biochar-only *** inclusion of.biochar in 25-50%volume ratio improved plant growth parameters compared to peat-only and biochar-only *** obtained f.om this study suggest that sawmill residue of.ers great potential as a f.edstock f.r biochar production and inclusion of.biochar has positive ef.ects on seed germination and plant growth that might compete with modif.ed peat.
