With severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 spreading globally and causing 2019 coronavirus disease(COVID-19),a challenge that we unprepared for was about how to optimally plan and distribute limited top-medical resources for patients in need of urgent *** address this challenge,physicians desperately needed a scientific tool to methodically differentiate between cases with varying *** this study,the unique data of COVID-19 intensive care unit(ICU)patients provided by the national medical team in Wuhan were classified into discrete and continuous variable *** continuous data were discretized using an entropy-based method and transformed into serial information margins,in which each information margin is related to a specific symptom or clinical ***,all these native and processed discrete data were used to configure a readable scorecard through logistic regression,which is the desired scientific tool aforementioned.A total of 322 ICU patients(age:[median:64,interquartile range:54-75],males:178[55.28%],and death:72[22.36%])were included in the *** of mortality in COVID-19 patients can be evaluated using a scorecard model(calibration slope:1.343,Brier:0.048,Dxy=0.972,and population stability index=0.071),with desired model performances(accuracy=0.948,area under curve=0.99,sensitivity=1,and specificity=0.939).This new model can interpret clinical meanings from complex data,and compare it with existing machine learning methods through a black-box *** new data-information model answers a critical question of how a computing algorithm produces clinically meaningful results that will help physicians logically allocate medical resources for COVID-19 ***,this tool has limitations,giving that this research is a retrospective ***,this tool will be tested further and optimized for adaptation to similar clinical cases in the future.

Effect of Texture on the Grain-Size-Dependent Functional Properties of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys and Texture Gradient Design:A Phase Field Study

Texture is inevitably introduced during the manufacturing of most NiTi shape memory alloys(SMAs),and the textured nanocrystalline NiTi has been extensively employed in ***,the effect of texture,and the joint effect of grain size(GS)and texture on the functional properties of NiTi SMAs and the corresponding microscopic mechanisms have not been clearly understood *** this work,based on the phase field method,the effect of texture on the GS-dependent functional properties of NiTi SMAs,including super-elasticity(SE),one-way shape memory effect(OWSME),and stress-assisted two-way shape memory effect(SATWSME),is investigated,and the corresponding microscopic mechanisms are ***,the samples with discrete geometrical gradients and/or texture gradients are designed to achieve graded functional *** simulation results indicate that the dependence of functional properties on texture is due to the effect of crystallographic orientation on martensite transformation and reorientation,which can lead to different inelastic *** the designed samples with texture gradients,the stress–strain responses of sheets with various textures are different,allowing for the coordination of overall deformation of the sample by combining such sheets,with varying inelastic deformation ***,the overall response of the sample differs from that without texture gradient,leading to the achievement of graded functional *** simulation results and new findings in this work contribute to a deeper understanding of the effects of texture,GS,and their interaction on the functional properties of SMAs,and provide valuable reference for the design and development of SMA-based devices with desired functional properties.

Despite the considerable advancements in chemotherapy as a cornerstone modality in cancer treatment,the prevalence of complications and pre-existing diseases is on the rise among cancer patients along with prolonged survival and aging *** relationships between these disorders and cancer are intricate,bearing significant influence on the survival and quality of life of individuals with cancer and presenting challenges for the prognosis and outcomes of ***,we review the prevailing complications and comorbidities that often accompany chemotherapy and summarize the lessons to learn from inadequate research and management of this scenario,with an emphasis on possible strategies for reducing potential complications and alleviating comorbidities,as well as an overview of current preclinical cancer models and practical advice for establishing bio-faithful preclinical models in such complex context.

Effect of Tanshinone IIA on High Glucose-induced Apoptosis and Oxidative Stress Damage in Vascular Endothelial Cells

Objective: The primary cause of microvascular disease in diabetic complications is long-term hyperglycemia, wherein the damage and apoptosis of vascular endothelial cells play a significant role. Sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate(STS) has been found to have beneficial effects on cardiovascular health. This study aimed to investigate the impact of STS on high glucose-induced apoptosis and oxidative stress damage in vascular endothelial cells, as well as its potential protective mechanisms. Methods:Human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs) were divided into five groups:low-glucose group, high-glucose group, and three STS groups(STS-a, STS-b, and STS-c). The low-glucose group was incubated with DMEM low-sugar medium containing 5.5 mmol·L-1glucose, while the high-glucose group was treated with 33.3mmol·L-1glucose. The STS groups were exposed to 10, 30, and 50 μg·m L-1of STS,respectively. Each group was cultured for 72 h, and the MTT method was utilized to assess cell proliferation. Additionally, flow cytometry was employed to monitor changes in cell apoptosis and cellular oxidative stress indicators at 24, 48, and 72 h of cell culture in each group. Results: As time went on, the cell proliferation ability and apoptosis rate of each group gradually increased. The high-glucose group exhibited lower proliferation ability compared to the other groups. The STS-c group demonstrated the highest OD value for proliferation ability(24 h: 1.19±0.12; 48 h: 1.20±0.13; 72 h:1.25 ±0.12), but it was still lower than that of the low-sugar group. Notably, the high-glucose group had the highest cell apoptosis rate, while the low-glucose group had the lowest. The apoptosis rate of the STS-c group(24 h: 8.02±0.13; 48 h: 10.10±0.12;72 h: 13.18 ±0.11)% was between that of the low-glucose group and the high-glucose group, and lower than the STS-a and STS-b groups. To address the hazardous by-product of zinc smelting and resource utilization of jarosite residue,this study applies an electric field-assisted hot acid treatment to completely recycle iron(Fe).This innovative approach aims to enhance the leaching efficiency of Fe from jarosite *** introduction of an electric field changes the charge distribution on the surface of the particles to enhance ions and electrons exchange and promotes the collision between particles to strengthen reaction *** on the above,the leaching efficiency of Fe in jarosite under sulfuric acid attack has improved *** result shows that Fe leaching efficiency reaches 98.83%,which is increased by 28%under the optimal experimental conditions:current density of 30 mA·cm^(-2),H_(2)SO_(4) concentration of 1.5 mol·L^(-1),solid-liquid ratio of 70 g·L^(-1),temperature of 80℃ and time of 12 *** kinetics calculations show that the apparent activation energy is 16.97 kJ·mol^(-1) and the leaching of jarosite residue is controlled by a mixture of chemical reaction and diffusion,as well as the temperature and concentration of the leaching solution have an influence on *** work provides a feasible idea for the efficient leaching of Fe from jarosite residue.
