Resilience-oriented Restoration Strategy by Offshore Wind Power Considering Risk

Global climate changes have created intense naturaldisasters such as typhoons, which may cause serious damage topower systems. As an emerging renewable energy resource, offshore wind power has great potential in power systems resilienceenhancement with its rapid start-up capability and developmentof anti-typhoon technology. In this paper, a restoration strategyby offshore wind power considering risk is proposed to speedup the restoration process and enhance system resilience. Specifically, a failure risk model of an individual wind turbine andthen the whole wind farm is built for predicting severe weather’simpact, with focus on failure probability. Further, a quantificationmodel of resilience enhancement and risk cost, based on customerinterruption cost assessment method, is introduced. Then, a twostage optimized decision-making model is proposed to solve thescheme of offshore wind power and conventional power unitsin load restoration process. Case studies are undertaken on amodified IEEE RTS-79 system and results indicate the proposedrestoration strategy can shorten duration of restoration andreduce customers’ economic losses meanwhile ensuring systemsafety.

Ocean spiciness is referred to as density-compensated temperature and salinity variations with warm(cool)and salty(fresh)waters having high(low)spiciness,respectively.The structure and evolution of density-compensated(warm/salty or cool/fresh)spiciness anomalies are investigated in the North Pacific thermocline using Argo observations during the period 2004-20.Two well-organized decadal spiciness events are identified through isopycnal surface analyses.One warm/salty spiciness anomaly of about 0.15°C and 0.05 g kg^(−1)temperature and salinity perturbations on the 25 kg m^(−1)isopycnal surface appeared in the eastern subtropical North Pacific at(18°-30°N,120°-150°W)in 2007,which then migrated southwestward along the mean circulation and arrived in the western tropics at(~15°N,145°E-175°W)in 2012-13,with the reduced salinity perturbation of about 0.043 g kg^(−1).Another cool/fresh spiciness anomaly of about−0.2°C and−0.07 g kg^(−1)temperature and salinity perturbations originated from the eastern subtropics at(120°-150°W,~30°N)in 2014 and followed a similar advective pathway during the period from 2014-15 to 2019-20.The subduction pathway can be adequately determined by the mean Montgomery stream function on the isopycnal surface;the propagation direction and speed are in good agreement with the expectation for the role played by advection due to the mean geostrophic current.Moreover,the subducted decadal spiciness anomalies can have negative feedback on sea surface temperature(SST)variability in the western tropical Pacific through the diapycnal processes.The identifications of these density-compensated spiciness anomalies and their propagation pathways provide a clear illustration of the oceanic extratropics-tropics interactions in the North Pacific Ocean.

El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)can be currently predicted reasonably well six months and longer,but large biases and uncertainties remain in its real-time prediction.Various approaches have been taken to improve understanding of ENSO processes,and different models for ENSO predictions have been developed,including linear statistical models based on principal oscillation pattern(POP)analyses,convolutional neural networks(CNNs),and so on.Here,we develop a novel hybrid model,named as POP-Net,by combining the POP analysis procedure with CNN-long short-term memory(LSTM)algorithm to predict the Niño-3.4 sea surface temperature(SST)index.ENSO predictions are compared with each other from the corresponding three models:POP model,CNN-LSTM model,and POP-Net,respectively.The POP-based pre-processing acts to enhance ENSO-related signals of interest while filtering unrelated noise.Consequently,an improved prediction is achieved in the POP-Net relative to others.The POP-Net shows a high-correlation skill for 17-month lead time prediction(correlation coefficients exceeding 0.5)during the 1994-2020 validation period.The POP-Net also alleviates the spring predictability barrier(SPB).It is concluded that value-added artificial neural networks for improved ENSO predictions are possible by including the process-oriented analyses to enhance signal representations.

The Effect of Pore Solution on the Hysteretic Curve of Expansive Soil under Cyclic Loading

A dynamic triaxial instrument was used to study the effects of different concentrations of sodium chloride and stress amplitudes on the dynamic properties of an expansive soil under cyclic loading.In particular,four parameters were considered in such a parametric investigation,namely,hysteresis curve morphology characteristic non-closure degreeεp,the ratio of the short and long axisα,the slope of the long axis k and the enclosed area S.The results show that with an increase in the sodium chloride concentration,the soil particle double electric layer becomes thinner,the distance between soil particles decreases,and the whole sample becomes denser.Theεp-N,α-N and S–N relation curves all show a decreasing trend.The ratio of plastic deformation to total deformation grows with increasing the dynamic stress amplitude,and the curves show an upwards trend.The k-N relationship curve displays an increasing trend with the concentration and a general downwards trend as the dynamic stress amplitude is made higher.This also indicates that sodium chloride solutions can improve the engineering properties of expansive soil to a certain extent.With an increase in the vibration times N,the shape of the hysteretic curve becomes narrower,and the whole soil exhibits a cyclic strain hardening.With the help of an exponential function,a model is introduced to predict the relationship between the concentration and the hysteretic curve.

Air curtains is promising in reducing the short-range infection risk in hospitals.To quantitatively evaluate its performance,this paper explores air curtains equipped on normal consulting desk to avoid doctor’s direct exposure to the patient exhaled pollutants.A numerical investigation is conducted to evaluate the effects of supply air velocity and angle on cutting off performance.Simulation results show that the average mass fraction of exhaled pollutants decreases significantly(70%–90%)in the consulting ward,indicating satisfying performance of air curtains.Increasing supply air velocity is demonstrated to be conducive in forming full air curtains,whereas an excessively high supply air velocity may be of adverse effects by entraining exhaled flow.Besides,the supply air angle is also critical due to its coupling with supply air velocity.It is found that larger angle(0°–40°)is better where velocity is less than 3 m/s,otherwise a small angle(20°)is preferable where velocity is larger than 3 m/s.Exhaled flow could be well suppressed at the supply air angle 20°but moves over air curtains at 40°.This study can provide effective and intuitive guidance in applying air curtains in consulting wards.

An observer-based adaptive backstepping boundary control is proposed for vibration control of flexible offshore riser systems with unknown nonlinear input dead zone and uncertain environmental disturbances.The control algorithm can update the control law online through real-time data to make the controller adapt to the environment and improve the control precision.Specifically,based on the adaptive backstepping framework,virtual control laws and Lyapunov functions are designed for each subsystem.Three direction interference observers are designed to track the timevarying boundary disturbance.On this basis,the inverse of the dead zone and linear state transformation are used to compensate for the original system and eliminate the adverse effects of the dead zone.In addition,the stability of the closed-loop system is proven by Lyapunov stability theory.All the system states are bounded,and the vibration offset of the riser converges to a small area of the initial position.Finally,four examples of flexible marine risers are simulated in MATLAB to verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Based on a large sample of massive(M* 1010 M⊙) compact galaxies at 1.0 < z < 3.0 in five 3 D-HST/CANDELS fields, we quantify the fractional abundance and comoving number density of massive compact galaxies as a function of redshift. The samples of compact quiescent galaxies(cQGs) and compact star-forming galaxies(cSFGs) are constructed by various selection criteria of compact galaxies in the literature, and the effect of compactness definition on abundance estimate has proven to be remarkable,particularly for the cQGs and cSFGs at high redshifts. Regardless of the compactness criteria adopted,their overall redshift evolutions of fractional abundance and number density are found to be rather similar.Large samples of the cQGs exhibit a sustained increase in number density from z ~ 3 to 2 and a plateau at 1 < z < 2. For massive cSFGs, a plateau in the number density at 2 < z < 3 can be found, as well as a continuous drop from z ~ 2 to 1. The evolutionary trends of the cQG and cSFG abundances support the scenario that the cSFGs at z≥ 2 may have been rapidly quenched into quiescent phase via violent dissipational processes, such as major merger and disk instabilities. The rarity of the cSFGs at lower redshifts(z < 1) can be interpreted by the decrease of gas reservoirs in dark matter halos and the consequent low efficiency of gas-rich dissipation.

Three major human coronavirus disease outbreaks,severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS),Middle East respiratory syndrome(MERS)and 2019 coronavirus disease(COVID-19),occurred in the twenty-first century and were caused by different coronaviruses(CoVs).All these viruses are considered to have originated from bats and transmitted to humans through intermediate hosts.SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2,disease agent of COVID-19,shared around 80%genomic similarity,and thus belong to SARS-related CoVs.As a natural reservoir of viruses,bats harbor numerous other SARS-related CoVs that could potentially infect humans around the world,causing SARS or COVID19 like outbreaks in the future.In this review,we summarized the current knowledge of CoVs on geographical distribution,genetic diversity,cross-species transmission potential and possible pathogenesis in humans,aiming for a better understanding of bat SARS-related CoVs in the context of prevention and control.

Glial cells,consisting of astrocytes,oligodendrocyte lineage cells,and microglia,account for>50% of the total number of cells in the mammalian brain.They play key roles in the modulation of various brain activities under physiological and pathological conditions.Although the typical morphological features and characteristic functions of these cells are well described,the organization of interconnections of the different glial cell populations and their impact on the healthy and diseased brain is not completely understood.Understanding these processes remains a profound challenge.Accumulating evidence suggests that glial cells can form highly complex interconnections with each other.The astroglial network has been well described.Oligodendrocytes and microglia may also contribute to the formation of glial networks under various circumstances.In this review,we discuss the structure and function of glial networks and their pathological relevance to central nervous system diseases.We also highlight opportunities for future research on the glial connectome.
