Impacts of land use/cover change on water balance by using the SWAT model in a typical loess hilly watershed of China

Land use/cover change(LUCC)plays a key role in altering surface hydrology and water balance,finally affect-ing the security and availability of water resources.However,mechanisms underlying LUCC determination of water-balance processes at the basin scale remain unclear.In this study,the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)model and partial least squares regression were used to detect the effects of LUCC on hydrology and water components in the Zuli River Basin(ZRB),a typical watershed of the Yellow River Basin.In general,three recommended coefficients(R^(2)and E ns greater than 0.5,and P bias less than 20%)indicated that the output results of the SWAT model were reliable and that the model was effective for the ZRB.Then,several key findings were obtained.First,LUCC in the ZRB was characterized by a significant increase in forest(21.61%)and settlement(23.52%)and a slight reduction in cropland(-1.35%),resulting in a 4.93%increase in evapotranspiration and a clear decline in surface runoffand water yield by 15.68%and 2.95%at the whole basin scale,respectively.Second,at the sub-basin scale,surface runoffand water yield increased by 14.26%-36.15%and 5.13%-15.55%,respectively,mainly due to settlement increases.Last,partial least squares regression indicated that urbanization was the most significant contributor to runoffchange,and evapotranspiration change was mainly driven by forest expansion.These conclusions are significant for understanding the relationship between LUCC and water balance,which can provide meaningful information for managing water resources and the long-term sustainability of such watersheds.

The past four years have witnessed booming progress in single-atom nanozymes(SANs),one of the newest generations of nanozymes with atomically dispersed metal sites for catalytic biomedical uses.They show distinct advantages over their nanoparticle-based counterparts,such as well-defined electronic/geometric structures and complete atomic utilization efficiency,thus offering opportunities to develop advanced nanozymes for practical uses.The atomically dispersed active centers in SANs could also facilitate the precise regulation of catalytic performance,while probing structure–activity relationship for in-depth understanding of mechanism.In this review,we first introduce the synthetic approaches,surface engineering,and characterization techniques of SANs.Subsequently,we discuss the enzyme-like properties of SANs,including some strategies for boosting their catalytic activities.Furthermore,we present their biomedical applications,ranging from biosensors,antibacterial uses,antioxidants,to therapeutics.Finally,the challenges and opportunities of SANs are prospected.

Objective Vascular smooth muscle cell(VSMC)differentiation from stem cells is one source of the increasing number of VSMCs that are involved in vascular remodeling-related diseases such as hypertension,atherosclerosis,and restenosis.MicroRNA-146a(miR-146a)has been proven to be involved in cell proliferation,migration,and tumor metabolism.However,little is known about the functional role of miR-146a in VSMC differentiation from embryonic stem cells(ESCs).This study aimed to determine the role of miR-146a in VSMC differentiation from ESCs.Methods Mouse ESCs were differentiated into VSMCs,and the cell extracts were analyzed by Western blotting and RT-qPCR.In addition,luciferase reporter assays using ESCs transfected with miR-146a/mimic and plasmids were performed.Finally,C57BL/6J female mice were injected with mimic or miR-146a-overexpressing ESCs,and immunohistochemistry,Western blotting,and RT-qPCR assays were carried out on tissue samples from these mice.Results miR-146a was significantly upregulated during VSMC differentiation,accompanied with the VSMC-specific marker genes smooth muscle-alpha-actin(SMαA),smooth muscle 22(SM22),smooth muscle myosin heavy chain(SMMHC),and h1-calponin.Furthermore,overexpression of miR-146a enhanced the differentiation process in vitro and in vivo.Concurrently,the expression of Kruppel-like factor 4(KLF4),predicted as one of the top targets of miR-146a,was sharply decreased in miR-146a-overexpressing ESCs.Importantly,inhibiting KLF4 expression enhanced the VSMC-specific gene expression induced by miR-146a overexpression in differentiating ESCs.In addition,miR-146a upregulated the mRNA expression levels and transcriptional activity of VSMC differentiation-related transcription factors,including serum response factor(SRF)and myocyte enhancer factor 2c(MEF-2c).Conclusion Our data support that miR-146a promotes ESC-VSMC differentiation through regulating KLF4 and modulating the transcription factor activity of VSMCs.

An effective symbiosis between legumes and rhizobia relies largely on diverse proteins at the plantrhizobium interface for material transportation and signal transduction during symbiotic nitrogen fixation.Here,we report a comprehensive proteome atlas of the soybean symbiosome membrane(SM),peribacteroid space(PBS),and root microsomal fraction(RMF)using state-of-the-art label-free quantitative proteomic technology.In total,1759 soybean proteins with diverse functions are detected in the SM,and 1476 soybean proteins and 369 rhizobial proteins are detected in the PBS.The diversity of SM proteins detected suggests multiple origins of the SM.Quantitative comparative analysis highlights amino acid metabolism and nutrient uptake in the SM,indicative of the key pathways in nitrogen assimilation.The detection of soybean secretory proteins in the PBS and receptor-like kinases in the SM provides evidence for the likely extracellular property of the symbiosome and the potential signaling communication between both symbionts at the symbiotic interface.Our proteomic data provide clues for how some of the sophisticated regulation between soybean and rhizobium at the symbiotic interface is achieved,and suggest approaches for symbiosis engineering.

Synergy between the intrinsic photon and thermal effects from full-spectrum sunlight for H_(2) production is considered to be central to further improve solar-driven H_(2) production.To that end,the photo-thermocatalyst that demonstrates both photoelectronic and photothermal conversion capabilities have drawn much attention recently.Here,we propose a novel synergistic full-spectrum photo-thermo-catalysis technique for high-efficient H_(2) production by solar-driven methanol steam reforming(MSR),along with the Pt-Cu Oxphoto-thermo-catalyst featuring Pt-Cu/Cu_(2)O/CuO heterojunctions by Pt-mediated in-situ photoreduction of Cu O.The results show that the H_(2) production performance rises superlinearly with increasing light intensity.The optimal H_(2) production rate of 1.6 mol g^(-1) h^(-1) with the corresponding solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 7%and the CO selectivity of 5%is achieved under 15×sun full-spectrum irradiance(1×sun=1 k W m^(-2))at 180°C,which is much more efficient than the previously-reported Cu-based thermo-catalysts for MSR normally operating at 250~350°C.These attractive performances result from the optimized reaction kinetics in terms of intensified intermediate adsorption and accelerated carrier transfer by long-wave photothermal effect,and reduced activation barrier by short-wave photoelectronic effect,due to the broadened full-spectrum absorbability of catalyst.This work has brought us into the innovative technology of full-spectrum synergistic photothermo-catalysis,which is envisioned to expand the application fields of high-efficient solar fuel production.

Diabetes mellitus is a common chronic disease.With the improvement of living standards,the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in China is increasing.There are now more people with diabetes in China(>100 million)than in any other country.About half of these people with diabetes need to undergo at least one procedure in their lifetime.Diabetic patients have a much higher probability of perioperative dysglycemia than the normal population,which has a great impact on their prognosis.In addition,non-diabetic patients may also have abnormal blood glucose levels due to various reasons during the perioperative period,which will also lead to a series of adverse consequences.This ar ticle reviews the perioperative blood glucose management of patients to provide a reference for improving their health status.

Index-adaptive Triangle-Based Graph Local Clustering

Motif-based graph local clustering(MGLC)algorithms are gen-erally designed with the two-phase framework,which gets the motif weight for each edge beforehand and then conducts the local clustering algorithm on the weighted graph to output the result.Despite correctness,this frame-work brings limitations on both practical and theoretical aspects and is less applicable in real interactive situations.This research develops a purely local and index-adaptive method,Index-adaptive Triangle-based Graph Local Clustering(TGLC+),to solve the MGLC problem w.***.t.triangle.TGLC+combines the approximated Monte-Carlo method Triangle-based Random Walk(TRW)and deterministic Brute-Force method Triangle-based Forward Push(TFP)adaptively to estimate the Personalized PageRank(PPR)vector without calculating the exact triangle-weighted transition probability and then outputs the clustering result by conducting the standard sweep procedure.This paper presents the efficiency of TGLC+through theoretical analysis and demonstrates its effectiveness through extensive experiments.To our knowl-edge,TGLC+is the first to solve the MGLC problem without computing the motif weight beforehand,thus achieving better efficiency with comparable effectiveness.TGLC+is suitable for large-scale and interactive graph analysis tasks,including visualization,system optimization,and decision-making.

Glial cells,consisting of astrocytes,oligodendrocyte lineage cells,and microglia,account for>50% of the total number of cells in the mammalian brain.They play key roles in the modulation of various brain activities under physiological and pathological conditions.Although the typical morphological features and characteristic functions of these cells are well described,the organization of interconnections of the different glial cell populations and their impact on the healthy and diseased brain is not completely understood.Understanding these processes remains a profound challenge.Accumulating evidence suggests that glial cells can form highly complex interconnections with each other.The astroglial network has been well described.Oligodendrocytes and microglia may also contribute to the formation of glial networks under various circumstances.In this review,we discuss the structure and function of glial networks and their pathological relevance to central nervous system diseases.We also highlight opportunities for future research on the glial connectome.

Grain size is a major determinant of cereal grain yields;however,the relevant regulatory mechanisms controlling this trait have not been fully elucidated.The rice(Oryza sativa)mutant short grain6(sg6)was identified based on its reduced grain length and weight.Here,we functionally characterized the role of SG6 in determining grain size through the regulation of spikelet hull cell division.SG6 encodes a previously uncharacterized plant ATrich sequence and zinc-binding(PLATZ)protein that is ubiquitously localized throughout the cell and is preferentially expressed in the early developing panicles but not in the endosperm.The overexpression of SG6 resulted in significantly larger and heavier grains,as well as increased plant heights,which is consistent with its elevated spikelet hull cell division rate.Yeast two-hybrid analyses revealed that SG6 interacts with the core cell cycle machinery DP protein and several other putative cell division regulators,consistent with our transcriptomic analysis,which showed that SG6 activates the expression of many DNA replication and cell-cycle-related genes.These results confirm the crucial role of SG6 in determining grain size by regulating spikelet hull cell division and provide clues for understanding the functions of PLATZ family proteins and the network regulating cereal grain size.
