Hierarchical crystalline-amorphous nanocomposites with high strength and large deformability enabled by elemental diffusion

Amorphous/nanocrystalline dual-phase structures have recently emerged as an effective way for over-coming the strength-ductility trade-offand breaking the limitation of the reverse Hall-Petch effect.Here,we proposed a new strategy to develop a hierarchical and interconnected amorphous-crystalline nanocomposite arising from the nanoscale elemental interdiffusion and oxygen adsorption behavior dur-ing thermal treatment processes.The nanocomposite consisted of a three-dimensional(3D)hierarchical network structure where the crystalline phase(Cr-Co-Ni-Al)was embedded into the Al-O-based amor-phous phase network with critical feature sizes encompassing three orders of magnitude(from microm-eter to nanometer scale).It can achieve ultrahigh compression yield strength of-3.6 GPa with large homogeneous deformation of over 50%strain.The massive interstitial atoms induced lattice distortion and hierarchical amorphous phase boundary contributed to the strength improvement.in situ Uniaxial compression inside a transmission electron microscope(TEM)revealed that the exceptional deformability of the nanocomposites resulted from the homogenous plastic flow of nano-sized amorphous phase and the plastic co-deformation behavior restricted by the nano-architected dual-phase interface.The proposed dual-phase synthesis approach can outperform conventional nanolaminates design strategies in terms of the mechanical properties achievable while providing a pathway to easily tune the microstructure of these nanolaminates.

Testing Linearity in Functional Partially Linear Models

For the functional partially linear models including flexible nonparametric part and functional linear part,the estimators of the nonlinear function and the slope function have been studied in existing literature.How to test the correlation between response and explanatory variables,however,still seems to be missing.Therefore,a test procedure for testing the linearity in the functional partially linear models will be proposed in this paper.A test statistic is constructed based on the existing estimators of the nonlinear and the slope functions.Further,we prove that the approximately asymptotic distribution of the proposed statistic is a chi-squared distribution under some regularity conditions.Finally,some simulation studies and a real data application are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed test statistic.

Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation benefits postoperative pain relief of oocyte retrieval:A randomized controlled trial

Background Transvaginal oocyte retrieval is frequently followed by adverse events related to anesthesia and the procedure.Some research showed that transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation(TEAS)can relieve intraoperative pain and postoperative nausea.Objective This study examined whether TEAS can alleviate pain and relieve adverse symptoms after oocyte retrieval.Design,setting,participants and interventions Altogether 128 patients were randomly divided into the TEAS group and the mock TEAS group.The two groups received a 30-minute-long TEAS or mock TEAS treatment that began 30 min after oocyte retrieval.Main outcome measures The primary outcome was the visual analog scale(VAS)pain score.Secondary outcomes were pressure pain threshold,McGill score,pain rating index(PRI),present pain intensity(PPI),VAS stress score,VAS anxiety score,and postoperative adverse symptoms.Results The baseline characteristics of the two groups were comparable(P>0.05).The VAS pain scores of the TEAS group were lower than those of the mock TEAS group at 60 and 90 min after oocyte retrieval(P0.05).The TEAS group was superior to the mock TEAS group for relieving postoperative adverse symptoms(P<0.05).Conclusion TEAS treatment can relieve postoperative pain and postoperative adverse symptoms for patients undergoing oocyte retrieval.

RFFsNet-SEI:a multidimensional balanced-RFFs deep neural network framework for specific emitter identification

Existing specific emitter identification(SEI)methods based on hand-crafted features have drawbacks of losing feature information and involving multiple processing stages,which reduce the identification accuracy of emitters and complicate the procedures of identification.In this paper,we propose a deep SEI approach via multidimensional feature extraction for radio frequency fingerprints(RFFs),namely,RFFsNet-SEI.Particularly,we extract multidimensional physical RFFs from the received signal by virtue of variational mode decomposition(VMD)and Hilbert transform(HT).The physical RFFs and I-Q data are formed into the balanced-RFFs,which are then used to train RFFsNet-SEI.As introducing model-aided RFFs into neural network,the hybrid-driven scheme including physical features and I-Q data is constructed.It improves physical interpretability of RFFsNet-SEI.Meanwhile,since RFFsNet-SEI identifies individual of emitters from received raw data in end-to-end,it accelerates SEI implementation and simplifies procedures of identification.Moreover,as the temporal features and spectral features of the received signal are both extracted by RFFsNet-SEI,identification accuracy is improved.Finally,we compare RFFsNet-SEI with the counterparts in terms of identification accuracy,computational complexity,and prediction speed.Experimental results illustrate that the proposed method outperforms the counterparts on the basis of simulation dataset and real dataset collected in the anechoic chamber.

Immediate Effect of Electro-acupuncture on Endometrial Blood Flow in Patients with Recurrent Implantation Failure:A Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective To investigate the immediate effects of electro-acupuncture(EA)on endometrial blood flow among recurrent implantation failure(RIF)patients.Methods Eighty RIF patients,enrolled from March 2022 to December 2022,were randomly allocated into either the EA group(40 cases)or the waiting-list(WL)group(40 cases)by using a random number table.The EA group underwent acupuncture at points of Shenting(GV 24),Baihui(GV 4),Benshen(GB 13),bilateral Zigong(EX-CA 1),Huangshu(KI 16),Sanyinjiao(SP 6)and Xuehai(SP10),and electric acupuncture apparatus was connected to EX-CA 1,KI 16,SP 6,and SP 10 with disperse-dense waves at 4/20 Hz frequencies for 30 min after transvaginal ultrasound,while the WL group received no intervention.The primary outcome measured was the endometrial volume blood flow.The secondary outcomes included the bilateral uterine artery index,endometrial volume,endometrial blood flow type,vascular distribution index(VI^(MV))for endometrial and ovary,clinical pregnancy rate,and embryo implantation rate.Results In the EA group,there was a notable decrease in the bilateral pulsatility index and a significant improvement in the endometrial blood flow type post-EA(P0.05).Besides,no adverse events related to EA were observed.Conclusions EA can promptly ameliorate VI^(MV) for the endometrial and right ovary,and endometrial blood flow type.Future randomized controlled trials are warranted to investigate the long-term effects of EA on blood flow of RIF patients and its implications for pregnancy outcomes.(Trial registration No.ChiCTR2200057377).

Triclosan toxicity in a model cyanobacterium (Anabaena flos-aquae): Growth, photosynthesis and transcriptomic response

Exposure to triclosan(TCS)has been reported to reduce photosynthetic pigments,suppress photosynthesis,and inhibit growth in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic algae including Anabaena flos-aquae(a model cyanobacterium).In particular,cyanobacteria are more sensitive to TCS toxicity compared to eukaryotic algae possibly due to the structural similarity to bacteria(target organisms);however,whether TCS exerts its toxicity to cyanobacteria by targeting signaling pathways of fatty acid biosynthesis as in bacteria remains virtually unknown,particularly at environmental exposure levels.With the complete genome sequence of A.flos-aquae presented in this study,the transcriptomic alterations and potential toxic mechanisms in A.flos-aquae under TCS stress were revealed.The growth,pigments and photosynthetic activity of A.flos-aquae were markedly suppressed following a 7-day TCS exposure at 0.5μg/L but not 0.1μg/L(both concentrations applied are environmentally relevant).The transcriptomic sequencing analysis showed that signaling pathways,such as biofilm formation–Pseudomonas aeruginosa,two-component system,starch and sucrose metabolism,and photosynthesis were closely related to the TCS-induced growth inhibition in the 0.5μg/L TCS treatment.Photosynthesis systems and potentially two-component system were identified to be sensitive targets of TCS toxicity in A.flos-aquae.The present study provides novel insights on TCS toxicity at the transcriptomic level in A.flos-aquae.

The successes with immune checkpoint blockade(ICB)and chimeric antigen receptor(CAR)-T-cell therapy in treating multiple cancer types have established immunotherapy as a powerful curative option for patients with advanced cancers.Unfortunately,many patients do not derive benefit or long-term responses,highlighting a pressing need to perform complete investigation of the underlying mechanisms and the immunotherapy-induced tumor regression or rejection.In recent years,a large number of single-cell technologies have leveraged advances in characterizing immune system,profiling tumor microenvironment,and identifying cellular heterogeneity,which establish the foundations for lifting the veil on the comprehensive crosstalk between cancer and immune system during immunotherapies.In this review,we introduce the applications of the most widely used single-cell technologies in furthering our understanding of immunotherapies in terms of underlying mechanisms and their association with therapeutic outcomes.We also discuss how single-cell analyses help to deliver new insights into biomarker discovery to predict patient response rate,monitor acquired resistance,and support prophylactic strategy development for toxicity management.Finally,we provide an overview of applying cutting-edge single-cell spatial-omics to point out the heterogeneity of tumor–immune interactions at higher level that can ultimately guide to the rational design of next-generation immunotherapies.

Scaly-sided Merganser(Mergus squamatus)equalizes foraging costs with depth by switching foraging tactics

Throughout evolutionary history,animals are finely tuned to adjust their behaviors corresponding to environmental variations.Behavioral flexibility represents an important component of a species'adaptive capacity in the face of rapid anthropogenetic environmental change,and knowledge of animal behaviors is increasingly recognized in conservation biology.In aquatic ecosystem,variation of water depth is a key factor affecting the availability of food;thus,the foraging behaviors of many waterbirds,especially piscivores.In this study,we compared the foraging behaviors of the Scaly-sided Merganser(Mergus squamatus),an endangered migratory diving duck endemic to East Asia,in habitats with different water depths(Shallow waters:0–40 cm;Deep waters:40–300 cm),using video camera records obtained from the known wintering sites during three winters from 2018 to 2020.Further,the energy expenditure of foraging behavior profile and energy intake based on fish sizes were calculated to study the foraging energetics.In total,200 effective video footages that contained 1086 min with 17,995 behaviors and 163 events of catching fish were recorded.Results showed that:1)time length for fishing(including eye-submerging,head-dipping,diving and food handling)of M.squamatus in shallow waters was significantly more than in deep waters;2)M.squamatuss spent significantly more time for preparing(including vigilance,preening and swimming)in deep waters than in shallow waters;3)the mean catch rate was 0.28 fish/min in shallow waters,which is significantly higher than the value of 0.13 fish/min in deep waters;4)despite the distinct foraging behavior profiles and energy intakes,M.squamatus showed similar energetics in shallow and deep waters.We concluded that M.squamatus is a good example of behavioral flexibility that aligns with expectations of optimal foraging theory,in that it behaves in accordance to resource availability in different environments,resulting in high foraging efficiency.

Accurate high-resolution maps of oil palm plantations underpin effective management of environmental and socio-economic impacts at global,regional,and national levels.However,young industrial and highly irregular small-holder plantations are mostly unmapped and not included in official FAO statistics.This issue is addressed here by discriminating global oil palm plantation in 2020 into four subclasses:Industrial Mature Oil Palm(IMOP);Industrial Young Oil Palm(IYOP);Smallholder Mature Oil Palm(SMOP);and Smallholder Young Oil Palm(SYOP).Data,resolved to 4.77 m,from Planet&NICFI,Sentinel-1/2,were combined with other layers using the image-oriented classification and regression tree(CART)algorithm which performed best in classification tests.Results show that SMOP dominates distributional extent,but it was also the most accurately mapped subclass typically found at 500–1000 m altitude.IMOP had the most extensive altitude range of 500–1300 m,while IYOP and SYOP were found at similar altitudes of 500–800 m and 500–900 m respectively.Recent developments in South East Asia show oil palm plantations expanding into new areas with a slope of 24 degrees.Results provide data to support Sustainable Development Goal by assisting future oil palm-related development planning and monitoring in the world’s major oil palm-growing countries.
