Socio-economic status and lifestyle factors are associated with achalasia risk: A population-based case-control study

AIM: to evaluate the association between various lifestyle factors and achalasia ***: A population-based case-control study was conducted in Northern Ireland, including n = 151 achalasia cases and n = 117 age- and sexmatched controls. Lifestyle factors were assessed via a face-to-face structured interview. the association between achalasia and lifestyle factors was assessed by unconditional logistic regression, to produce odds ratios(OR) and 95% confidence interval(CI).RESULtS: Individuals who had low-class occupations were at the highest risk of achalasia(OR = 1.88, 95%CI: 1.02-3.45), inferring that high-class occupation holders have a reduced risk of achalasia. A history of foreign travel, a lifestyle factor linked to upper socioeconomic class, was also associated with a reduced risk of achalasia(OR = 0.59, 95%CI: 0.35-0.99). Smoking and alcohol consumption carried significantly reduced risks of achalasia, even after adjustment for socio-economic status. the presence of pets in the house was associated with a two-fold increased risk of achalasia(OR = 2.00, 95%CI: 1.17-3.42). Nochildhood household factors were associated with achalasia ***: Achalasia is a disease of inequality, and individuals from low socio-economic backgrounds are at highest risk. this does not appear to be due to corresponding alcohol and smoking behaviours. An observed positive association between pet ownership and achalasia risk suggests an interaction between endotoxin and viral infection exposure in achalasia aetiology.

Disability management and rehabilitation for persons with multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is the commonest cause of chronic neurological disability in young adults. Patients typically have a normal life span, though with accrued time multiple disabilities with a significant impact on quality of life. this article presents the current literature on symptomatic treatment and rehabilitation for persons with multiple sclerosis. A comprehensive multidisciplinary approach addresses the acute, intermediate and long-term medical, psychological and social issues faced by these individuals. Prevention of medical complications, maintenance and restoration of functional independence, addressing psychosocial factors and issues relating to quality of life are integral to the rehabilitation processes.

the effect of gas phase polydimethylsiloxane surface treatment of metallic aluminum particles： Surface characterization and flow behavior

Aluminum particles were exposed to gaseous polydimethylsiloxane （PDMS） to produce a hydropho- bic surface coating for enhanced flow and fluidity. Surface retention of the intact PDMS was confirmed through infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. transmission electron microscopy was used to image cross-sections of the treated particles and energy dispersive spectroscopy element maps demon- strated the presence of a surface layer consisting of silicon and oxygen. Density measurements provided evidence for improvements in the Hausner ratio and Carr index of the PDMS-treated aluminum, indicating a reduction in inter-particulate cohesion through increased bulk density. Stability, compressibility, shear, aeration, and permeability of the particles were assessed by powder rheometer. the compressibility was reduced by approximately 32% following surface treatment, revealing a reduction in void space, while Mohr＇s circle analysis and shear testing determined that the extrapolated cohesion value was reduced by approximately 53% and the flow factor at 6 kPa was doubled. Aeration testing showed that the air velocity required to obtain a fluidized bed was on the order of 0.35 mm/s for the treated powder, whereas the raw powder could not be uniformly fluidized. PDMS may be a viable option for the large-scale treatment of aluminum powder for flow applications.

Evolution of Microalloyed Linepipe Steels With Particular Emphasis on the “Near Stoichiometry” Low Carbon,0.10 Percent Niobium “HtP” Concept

Microalloyed linepipe steels were first introduced in 1959 at strength levels around 52-60 ksi [1] [2].the steels were generally strengthened by niobium or vanadium used *** strengths levels increased to X-70 in the early 1970’s niobium and vanadium were used in combination and controlled rolling was introduced on a broad *** strengths decrease tolerance for impurities and non-metallic inclusions which required improved steelmaking ***,carbon,and nitrogen were reduced and continuous casting was increasingly applied which required improved ladle refining and deoxidation ***-molybdenum steels were introduced by IPSCO in 1972 [3] and by Italsider in 1974 [4].Steels with higher niobium contents were also introduced in the early 1970’s but available steelmaking technologies limited the use of optimum niobium to carbon ratios,*** approaching *** the steels benefited from the effect of niobium in retarding austenite recrystallization at relatively high rolling temperatures and they developed attractive combinations of strength and toughness in old manufacturing facilities using simple (relaxed) rolling *** in the price of molybdenum and vanadium in the past decade and expanded application of API Grade X-80 linepipe,have led to more widespread use of niobium contents up to 0.11 percent,in combination with 0.02-0.03 percent carbon (near stoichiometry) thus maximizing the effects of solute niobium during rolling,in lowering transformation temperature,and thereby reducing reliance on other alloying,often expensive,*** history of these developments will be presented and applications of the concept will be summarized.

Multiple stressors lead to complex responses in reproductive behaviors in an African cichlid

Exposure to multiple environmental stressors is a common occurrence that can affect organisms in predictable or unpredictable *** and turbidity in aquatic environments are 2 stressors that can affect reproductive behaviors by altering energy availability and the visual environment,*** we examine the relative effects of population and the rearing environment(oxygen concentration and turbidity)on reproductive *** reared cichlid fish(the Egyptian mouthbrooder,Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor)from 2 populations(a swamp and river)until sexual maturity,in a full factorial design(hypoxic/normoxic×clear/turbid)and then quantified male competitive and courtship behaviors and female preference under their respective rearing ***,we found that the rearing environment was more important than population for determining behavior,indicating there were few heritable differences in reproductive behavior between the 2 ***,males in the hypoxic rearing treatment performed more competitive and courtship *** turbid conditions,males performed fewer competitive and courtship *** predicted that females would prefer males from their own ***,under the hypoxic and turbid combination females from both populations preferred males from the other *** results suggest that reproductive behaviors are affected by interactions among male traits,female preferences,and environmental conditions.

Prostate cancer remains a leading cause of cancer death in Europe andthe United States and is an emerging problem in Asia despite significant improvements in available treatments over the last few decades. Androgen deprivation therapy （ADt） has been the core treatment of advance-staged disease since the discovery of prostate cancer＇s androgen dependence in 1941 by Huggins et al. Options for initial medical treatment include gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues such as leuprolide （LHRH agonist） and degarelix （LHRH antagonist） and androgen receptor （AR） binding agents such as bicalutamide. Although most patients will initially respond to either surgical or medical castration, there is almost always progression to castration-resistant prostate cancer （CRPC） necessitating treatment with more novel agents. However, even drugs such as abiraterone and enzalutamide, two next-generation agents used commonly in metastatic CRPC, have failed to demonstrate persistent efficacy in most patients.

When Kinases Meet PROtACs

Small molecule drugs targeting kinases have revolutionized treatment options for millions of patients worldwide, especially in oncology. these targeted treatments have less side effects because they inhibit a specific dysfunctional kinase usually with relatively narrow selectivity. However, kinase inhibitors do have well-established liabilities, most prominently the emergence of drug resistance. Moreover, the majority of kinases are multi- domain and multifunctional proteins that in addition to their enzymatic activity have scaffolding and other roles, and inhibitors seldom address these alternative functions. Recently, small molecule mediated targeted protein degradation emerged as a new pharmacological strategy. the majority of small molecule degraders are bispecific molecules called proteolysis targeting chimeras （PROtACs）, and their mechanism of action is based on simultaneous recruitment of the target of interest and an E3 ligase, resulting in target polyubiquitination and eventual destruction by the proteasome. Over the last couple of years, PROtAC strategy has been developed and validated for a range of targets, including kinases. Here, we introduce the targeted protein degradation strategy, provide an overview of representative kinase PROtACs, and describe design rationales, efficacy and specificity. We also discuss their potential advantages, as well as comment on some of the limitations of this emerging pharmacological modality.

Historic,pre-stock enhancement,demographic conditions of exploited populations of dusky flathead,Platycephalus fuscus,in eastern Australia

Responsible stock enhancement initiatives require baseline data of wild population demographic conditions that can be used in testing management *** study provides the first fishery-independent assessment of length-and age-based biological characteristics of exploited populations of Platycephalus fuscus in eastern Australia prior to stock *** was conducted over seven estuaries spanning seven degrees of latitude and the geographical range of proposed stock *** in all estuaries showed evidence of length and age truncation,especially those subject to commercial fisheries where young individuals of both sexes dominated *** longevities were 12 and 11 years for females and males respectively,but few females>5 years and males>3 years were generally *** dominated populations,and on average,the mean lengths and ages of females were greater than males within each estuary and across all age *** dimorphic variation in growth was evident across all estuaries,with females attaining greater maximum lengths than ***-specific differences in individual growth were not *** average,over 50%of females sampled in each estuary were>the minimum legal length(MLL),but the opposite was evident for *** contrast,over 25%of males in each estuary were>the mean length at maturity(L50),whereas in all but one estuarythe females were>the *** male and female *** should recruit to the fishery in 2 and 3 years,and contribute to the spawning stock in 1.5 and 4.5 years,*** study provides important historical baseline data that can contribute to testing stock enhancement outcomes on populations.

Research into the fundamental properties of microcapsules and use of the results to develop a wide variety of products in industries such as printing, fast-moving consumer goods, construction, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals is a dynamic and ever-progressing field of study. For microcapsules to be effective in providing protection from harsh environments or delivering large payloads, it is essential to have a good understanding of their properties to enable quality control during formulation, storage, and applications. this review aims to outline the commonly used techniques for determining the physicochemical, struc- tural, and mechanical properties of microcapsules, and highlights the interlinked nature of these three areas with respect to the end-use industrial application. this review provides information on techniques that are well supported in the literature, and also examines microcapsule analytical techniques that will become more prevalent as a result of new technological developments or extensions from other areas of study.
