Integration and scaling of UV-B radiation effects on plants: the relative sensitivity of growth forms and interspecies interactions

Aims the relative plant type sensitivity and selected community interac-tions under increased UV-B radiation where ***,we investigated:(i)if there are differences among growth forms in regard to their sensitivity to UV-B radiation,(ii)if increased UV-B radiation influences the plant competitive balance in plant com-munities and(iii)the response mechanisms of the UV-B radiation-sensitive species that might increase their *** to answer our research questions,we used a mechanistic model that,for the first time,integrated the effects of increased UV-B radia-tion from molecular level processes,whole plant growth and devel-opment,and community *** Findings In the model simulations,species types exhibited different levels of sensitivity to increased UV-B *** C3 and C4 annuals showed similar growth inhibition rates,while biennials and winter C3 annuals were the most *** exhibited inhibitions in growth only if increased UV-B radiation results in increases in metabolic *** communities,species sensitive to UV-B radiation may have a competitive disadvantage compared to resistant plant ***,sensitive species may have a wide array of responses that can increase their fitness and reproductive success in the com-munity,such as,increased secondary metabolites production,changes in timing of emergence and reproduction,and changes in seed *** individual plants may exhibit significant inhibi-tions in growth and development,in communities,these inhibitions can be mitigated by small morphological and physiological *** or occasional increased UV-B radiation events should not have any lasting effect on the structure of the commu-nity,unless other environmental factors are perturbing the dynamic equilibrium.

We discuss what document types account for the calculation of the journal impact factor （JIF） as published in the Journal Citation Reports （JCR）. Based on a brief review of articles discussing how to predict JIFs and taking data differences between the Web of Science （WoS） and the JCR into account, we make our own predictions. Using data by cited-reference searching for Thomson Scientific＇s WoS, we predict 2007 impact factors （1Fs） for several journals, such as Nature, Science, Learned Publishing and some Library and Information Sciences journals. Based on our colleagues＇ experiences we expect our predictions to be lower bounds for the official journal impact factors. We explain why it is useful to derive one＇s own journal impact factor.

Constructing the Family in Republican China： Shandong, 1944

Abstract This research is based on a short hand-written genealogy （shou chaoben 手抄本） of the kind that are appearing in flea markets in China these days. I surmise it was written in Shandong in 1944. Although its entries are brief, an analysis reveals much about the family, including female family members （often omitted from family genealogies）, inter-family marriages practiced over hundreds of years, status markers used by the family such as the taking of second wives, the prevalence of patriarchal views. in 1944 plays a role in my analysis of how The Japanese occupation of Shandong this manuscript was compiled.

Worldwide Inflation and International Monetary Reform:Exchange Rates or Interest Rates?

The international dollar standard is malfunctioning. Near-zero US short-term interest rates launch massive hot money outflows into emerging markets （EM） in Asia and Latin America. Each EM central bank buys dollars to prevent its currency from appreciating but loses monetary control. Despite some appreciation, average inflation in EMs is now much higher than in the old industrial economies and world commodity prices are bid up sharply. This inflation on the dollar ＇s periphery only registers in the US CPI with a long lag. However, the more immediate effect of the Fed＇s zero interest rate is to upset the process of bank intermediation within the American economy. Bank credit continues to decline while employment languishes. Therefore, constructive international monetary reform calls for the Fed to abandon its zero-interest rate policy, which is best done in cooperation with the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and the Bank of England also abandoning their ultra low interest rates.

A pancreatic player in dementia:pathological role for islet amyloid polypeptide accumulation in the brain

Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients have a markedly higher risk of developing *** multiple factors contribute to this predisposition,one of these involves the increased secretion of amylin,or islet amyloid polypeptide,that accompanies the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes *** amyloid polypeptide accumulation has undoubtedly been implicated in various forms of dementia,including Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia,but the exact mechanisms underlying islet amyloid polypeptide’s causative role in dementia are *** this review,we have summarized the literature supporting the various mechanisms by which islet amyloid polypeptide accumulation may cause neuronal damage,ultimately leading to the clinical symptoms of *** discuss the evidence for islet amyloid polypeptide deposition in the brain,islet amyloid polypeptide interaction with other amyloids implicated in neurodegeneration,neuroinflammation caused by islet amyloid polypeptide deposition,vascular damage induced by islet amyloid polypeptide accumulation,and islet amyloid polypeptide-induced *** are very few therapies approved for the treatment of dementia,and of these,clinical responses have been controversial at ***,investigating new,targetable pathways is vital for identifying novel therapeutic strategies for treating *** such,we conclude this review by discussing islet amyloid polypeptide accumulation as a potential therapeutic target not only in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus but as a future target in treating or even preventing dementia associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Bilateral Co-authorship Indicators Based on Fractional Counting

Purpose: In this contribution we provide two new co-authorship indicators based on fractional counting. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the idea of fractional counting we reflect on what should be an acceptable indicator for co-authorship between two entities. From this reflection we propose an indicator, the co-authorship score, denoted as cs, using the harmonic mean. Dividing this new indicator by the classical co-authorship indicator based on full counting, leads to a co-authorship intensity ***: We show that the indicators we propose have many necessary or at least highly desirable properties for a proper cs-score. It is pointed out that the two new indicators can be used for countries, but also for institutions and other pairs of entities. A small example shows the feasibility of the co-authorship score and the co-authorship intensity *** limitations: The indicators are not yet tested in real *** implications: As the notions of co-authorship and collaboration have many aspects, we think that our contribution may help policy management to take yet another aspect into account as part of a multi-faceted description of research ***/value: The indicators we propose cover yet another aspect of co-authorship.

Modeling Enhanced Adsorption of Explosive Molecules on a Hydroxylated Graphene Pore

The possibility of a graphene bilayer nanosensor for the detection of explosive molecules was modeled using computational chemistry. A pore was designed on a graphene bilayer structure with three strategically placed perimeter hydroxyl (OH) groups built around the edge of an indented, two-dimensional hexagonal pore. This hydroxylated pore and models of various explosive molecules were optimized using MM2 molecular mechanics parameters. Values were calculated for the molecule-surface interaction energy (binding energy), E, for 22 explosive molecules on a flat graphene bilayer and on the specially designed hydroxylated pore within the bilayer. The molecule-surface binding energy for trinitrotoluene (TNT) increased from 17.9 kcal/mol on the flat graphene bilayer to 42.3 kcal/mol on the hydroxylated pore. Due to the common functionality of nitro groups that exist on many explosive molecules, the other explosive molecules studied gave similar enhancements based on the specific hydrogen bonding interactions formed within the pore. Each of the 22 explosive adsorbate molecules showed increased molecule-surface interaction on the bilayer hydroxylated pore as compared to the flat bilayer. For the 22 molecules, the average E for the flat graphite surface was 15.8 kcal/mol and for the hydroxylated pore E was 33.8 kcal/mol. An enhancement of adsorption should make a detection device more sensitive. Nanosensors based on a modified graphene surface may be useful for detecting extremely low concentrations of explosive molecules or explosive signature molecules.

Alternative sources of fish oil(FO)are one of the major problems in aquaculture;therefore,the goal of the present study was to examine insect(black soldier fly larvae)oil(BSLO)as a potential replacer of fish/s oy oil in juvenile rainbow trout(initial average weight of 32±0.15 g)*** diets were formulated wherein FO(control diet)was completely replaced with either soybean oil(SO)or BSLO,and an additional BSLO-based diet supplemented with 1.5%bile acid(BSLO+BA)were fed to the fish for 10 *** performance of the BSLO fed group was similar(P>0.05)to that of the FO and SO fed groups,howeve r,the fish fed BSLO+BA diet registered the lowest growth(P0.05)affect the major nutrient content of whole-body,however,the fatty acid composition of the muscle and liver was influenced(P<0.05),with the highest 14:0,16:0,and total saturated fatty acid detected in BSLO or BSLO+BA fed trout compared to the others(P<0.001).No significant diffe rences were observed in eicosapentaenoic acid+docosahexaenoic acid(EPA+DHA)or total n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid(PUFA)content in muscle among the groups,whereas,the highest EPA:DHA and n-3:n-6 ratios were detected in the FO *** expression for fatty acid binding protein(fabp),fatty acid synthase(fas),and△5 desaturase in the liver was lower in FO(P<0.05),while BSLO+BA registered the highest△6 expression(P=0.006).Supplementation of BA in the BSLO diet increased superoxide dismutase(SOD)and catalase(CAT)activities compared to the other groups(P<0.05).In conclusion,BSLO could serve as a substitute for FO and SO in rainbow trout diet without negatively impacting growth performance,whole-body composition and nutrient retention,and modulate the expression of fatty acid metabolism-related genes in rainbow trout.
