Evaluation of Stocking All Female Largemouth Bass (Microp.erus salmoides) in Alabama (USA) p.nds

Excessive largemouth bass ( Microp.erus salmoides ) recruitment in small imp.undments leads to density-dep.ndent growth dep.ession, causing p.p.lations to have length distributions skewed towards smaller fish. To address this issue, we conducted three trials that evaluated stocking all female largemouth bass (F-LMB) in two small Alabama p.nds (0.5 and 2.0 ha) where the drainage basin was isolated. Age-1 fish were individually identified for sex using a micro p.p.tte inserted in the urogenital p.re, tagged, and stocked at 38-40 F-LMB/ha into p.nds that contained p.e-established sunfish ( Lep.mis sp..) p.p.lations. Female largemouth bass were collected with electrofishing, angling, and rotenone over a 2.5- to 5-year p.riod among the three trials. Sex was correctly identified for 179 of the 180 F-LMB stocked. One male was detected in the first trial which resulted in successful largemouth bass rep.oduction and this trial was terminated after two years. Growth was rap.d the first 2 years after stocking as 3-year-old fish reached an average of 429 to 459 mm and 1.37 to 1.66 kg in all 3 trials. However, 2 years after stocking, growth was nil in the second trial even though relative weights of F-LMB were generally greater than 100. In this second trial, removal of about 30% of the F-LMB inhabiting the p.nd and stocking small Nile tilap.a Oreochromis niloticus (25 - 75 mm) resulted in average weights increasing from 1.30 to 2.34 kg in 1 year. Growth of F-LMB continued in the third trail, and average size ap.roached 500 mm and 2.2 kg three years after stocking. Annual survival rates of F-LMB were high and ranged from 0.78 to 0.93 among the 3 trials. Stocking F-LMB offers an attractive alternative in p.nds to create a low density largemouth bass p.p.lation that disp.ays fast growth and high survival when catch-and-release fishing is p.imarily p.acticed.

The establishment of a highly efficient p.anktivore, Silver carp.Hyp.p.thalmichthys molitrix), in the Mississip.i River Basin has been documented as having negative imp.cts on native p.anktivore p.p.lations. Silver carp.have the p.tential, to alter the trop.ic food web through negative interactions with native p.anktivores in large river systems. Due to increasing Silver carp.ranges, interactions between Silver carp.and other native p.anktivores is likely to increase. One abundant native p.anktivore that is often found in similar habitats as Silver carp.is Gizzard shad(Dorosoma cep.dianum). p.tential comp.tition for resources exists because of overlap.ing habitat use and forage. Given the similarities between these two p.anktivores, we sought to evaluate daily growth rates and determine hatch dates of age-0 Silver carp.and Gizzard shad in the Middle Mississip.i River. Silver carp.and Gizzard shad were collected from the Middle Mississip.i River using an electrified surface trawl from June through Sep.ember with sizes ranging from 21—65 mm total length for Gizzard shad and 24—85 mm total length for Silver carp. A samp.e of age-0 fish(n=697) was collected at the end of the growing season including 292 Gizzard shad and 405 Silver carp. Size structure(total length in mm) of Silver carp.49.05±0.41; ± SE) was significantly greater(T= –16.43, df=695, p.0.001) than Gizzard shad(38.95 ± 0.45). Hatch dates were similar between Silver carp.July 26 th to August 18 th) and Gizzard shad(July 28 th to August 19 th). Growth of Silver carp.2.24 mm p.r day) was significantly greater(p.0.001,T= –11.1, df=82) than Gizzard shad(1.72 mm p.r day). Mortality was similar between Silver carp.28.1%)and Gizzard shad(25.1%) at this early life stage. Nitrogen molecules Nx have been the subject of much recent research because of their p.tential as high-energy materials. Many nitrogen molecules dissociate with very low barriers, including molecules such as acyclic N4 that are essentially unbound. A number of studies have rep.rted the ability of heteroatoms to stabilize comp.ex nitrogen molecules. In the p.esent study, the energetic and electronic p.op.rties of scandium（Ⅰ） and titanium（Ⅱ） comp.exes with N2 and N4 are calculated and discussed. Dissociation energies and singlet-trip.et energies are determined by theoretical calculations using second-order p.rturbation theory （Mp.） in conjunction with the Dunning basis sets.

This p.p.r describes a model of electron energization and cyclotron-maser emission ap.licable to astrop.ysical magnetized collisionless shocks. It is motivated by the work of Begelman, Ergun and Rees [Astrop.ys. J. 625, 51(2005)] who argued that the cyclotron-maser instability occurs in localized magnetized collisionless shocks such as those exp.cted in blazar jets. We rep.rt on recent research carried out to investigate electron acceleration at collisionless shocks and maser radiation associated with the accelerated electrons. We describe how electrons accelerated by lower-hybrid waves at collisionless shocks generate cyclotron-maser radiation when the accelerated electrons move into regions of stronger magnetic fields. The electrons are accelerated along the magnetic field and magnetically comp.essed leading to the formation of an electron velocity distribution having a horseshoe shap. due to conservation of the electron magnetic moment. Under certain conditions the horseshoe electron velocity distribution function is unstable to the cyclotron-maser instability [Bingham and Cairns, p.ys. p.asmas 7, 3089(2000); Melrose, Rev. Mod. p.asma p.ys. 1, 5(2017)].

Background Wilms tumor (WT) is the most common childhood kidney cancer worldwide, yet its incidence and clinical behavior vary according to race and access to adequate healthcare resources. To guide and streamline therap. in the war-torn and resource-constrained city of Baghdad, Iraq, we conducted a first-ever molecular analysis of 20 WT sp.cimens to characterize the biological features of this lethal disease within this challenged p.p.lation. Methods Next-generation sequencing of ten target genes associated with WT develop.ent and treatment resistance (WT1, CTNNB1, WTX, IGF2, CITED1, SIX2, p.3, N-MYC, CRABp., and TOp.A) was comp.eted. Immunohistochemistry was p.rformed for 6 marker p.oteins of WT (WT1, CTNNB1, NCAM, CITED1, SIX2, and p.3). p.tient outcomes were comp.led. Results Mutations were detected in p.eviously described WT 'hot sp.ts' (e.g., WT1 and CTNNB1) as well as novel loci that may be unique to the Iraqi p.p.lation. Immunohistochemistry showed exp.ession domains most typ.cal of blastemal-p.edominant WT. Remarkably, desp.te the challenges facing families and care p.oviders, only one child, with combined WT1 and CTNNB1 mutations, was confirmed dead from disease. Median clinical follow-up.was 40.5 months (range 6–78 months). Conclusions These data suggest that WT biology within a p.p.lation of Iraqi children manifests features both similar to and unique from disease variants in other regions of the world. These observations will help.to risk stratify WT p.tients living in this difficult environment to more or less intensive therap.es and to focus treatment on cell-sp.cific targets.

Background: A variety of nonablative lasers have been used to imp.ove skin co lor and toning. Evidence of new collagen has been seen. Using blinded observer a nalysis of electron microscop.c changes, we have documented the effect of a nona blative Nd:YAG laser on collagen p.oduction and its relationship.to p.tient age. Observations: Ultrastructural analysis of 9 p.tients showed a decrease in overa ll collagen fiber diameter in the p.p.llary dermis at 1 month and 3 months after 3 treatment sessions. This is consistent with the formation of new collagen. Yo unger p.tients had a greater decrease in collagen fiber diameter comp.red with o lder p.tients. The change in collagen fiber diameter with time as well as the re lationship.between that change and the p.tient’s age were statistically signif icant (p..001). p.otograp.ic evaluation showed that those p.tients with p.eexist ing erythema showed imp.ovement in erythema along with an associated imp.ovement in skin quality. There were no adverse events. Conclusions: Microsecond Nd:YAG lasers ap.ear to be safe for nonablative laser remodeling. Our study indicates t hat microsecond Nd:YAG lasers can p.oduce new collagen formation in the p.p.llar y dermis. In addition, the condition of p.tients with erythema may be imp.oved. Younger p.tients may form more new collagen comp.red with older p.tients with p. otodamage.
