Implications of safety requirements for the treatment of THMC processes in geological disposal systems for radioactive waste

The mission of nuclear safety authorities in national radioactive waste disposal programmes is to ensure that people and the environment are protected against the hazards of ionising radiations emitted by the *** implies the establishment of safety requirements and the oversight of the activities of the waste management organisation in charge of implementing the *** Belgium,the safety requirements for geological disposal rest on the following principles:defence-in-depth,demonstrability and the radiation protection principles elaborated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection(ICRP).Applying these principles requires notably an appropriate identification and characterisation of the processes upon which the safety functions fulfilled by the disposal system rely and of the processes that may affect the system ***,research and development(R&D)on safety-relevant thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical(THMC)issues is important to build confidence in the safety *** paper points out the key THMC processes that might influence radionuclide transport in a disposal system and its surrounding environment,considering the dynamic nature of these *** nature and significance are expected to change according to prevailing internal and external conditions,which evolve from the repository construction phase to the whole heatingecooling cycle of decaying waste after *** these processes have a potential impact on safety,it is essential to identify and to understand them properly when developing a disposal concept to ensure compliance with relevant safety *** particular,the investigation of THMC processes is needed to manage *** includes the identification and characterisation of uncertainties as well as for the understanding of their safety-relevance.R&D may also be necessary to reduce uncertainties of which the magnitude does not allow demonstrating the safety of the disposal system.

The vast diversity of morphologies,body size,and lifestyles of snakes represents an important source of information that can be used to derive bio-inspired robots through a biology-push and pull *** understanding of the detailed kinematics of swimming snakes is a fundamental prerequisite to conceive and design bio-inspired aquatic snake ***,only limited information is available on the kinematics of swimming *** and accurate methods are needed to fill this knowledge *** the present paper,three existing methods were compared to test their capacity to characterize the kinematics of swimming snakes.(1)Marker tracking(Deftac),(2)Markerless pose estimation(DeepLabCut),and(3)Motion capture were considered.(4)We also designed and tested an automatic video processing *** methods provided different albeit complementary data sets;they also involved different technical issues in terms of experimental conditions,snake manipulation,or processing *** tracking provided accurate data that can be used to calibrate other *** capture posed technical difficulties but can provide limited 3D *** pose estimation required deep learning(thus time)but was efficient to extract the data under various experimental ***,automatic video processing was particularly efficient to extract a wide range of data useful for both biology and robotics but required a specific experimental setting.

After a short historical overview of past systematic studies on Cantharellus,discussing delimitation and species diversity of the genus as well as previous,morphology-based,infrageneric classifications,this paper presents the first molecularly-based infrageneric classification of this genus using a multigene phylogenetic approach(nucLSU,mitSSU,RPB2 and tef-1)on a dataset that covers approximately halve of the described chanterelles worldwide,including many type *** subgenera are recognized and the recognition of subgenus Afrocantharellus as a separate genus is not *** taxonomic value of individual morphological features is discussed as challenged by this new multigene phylogeny which comprises five new sections,one new subgenus and many emendations for previously recognized infrageneric *** paper discusses the observed discrepancy in biodiversity of Cantharellus when comparing between studies that focus either on below-or above-ground presence.A preliminary biogeographic hypothesis suggests an‘out of Africa’Gondwanan origin as a result of vicariance and subsequent migrations.

Long-term high fructose and saturated fat diet affects plasma fatty acid profile in rats

As the consumption of fructose and saturated fatty acids(FAs) has greatly increased in western diets and is linked with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome,the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a mod-erate(10 weeks) and a prolonged(30 weeks) high fructose and saturated fatty acid(HFS) diet on plasma FA com-position in *** effects of a few weeks of HFS diet had already been described,but in this paper we tried to es-tablish whether these effects persist or if they are modified after 10 or 30 *** hypothesized that the plasma FA profile would be altered between 10 and 30 weeks of the HFS *** fed with either the HFS or a standard diet were tested after 10 weeks and again after 30 *** 10 weeks of feeding,HFS-fed rats developed the metabolic syndrome,as manifested by an increase in fasting insulinemia,total cholesterol and triglyceride levels,as well as by impaired glucose ***,the plasma FA profile of the HFS group showed higher proportions of monounsaturated FAs like palmitoleic acid [16:1(n-7)] and oleic acid [18:1(n-9)],whereas the proportions of some polyunsaturated n-6 FAs,such as linoleic acid [18:2(n-6)] and arachidonic acid [20:4(n-6)],were lower than those in the control *** 30 weeks of the HFS diet,we observed changes mainly in the levels of 16:1(n-7)(decreased) and 20:4(n-6)(increased).Together,our results suggest that an HFS diet could lead to an adaptive response of the plasma FA profile over time,in association with the development of the metabolic syndrome.

The broke of a tailings dam from vale S.A. destroyed a gigantic area killing 270 persons in Brumadinho/Brazil. Organizing activities after a mass disaster is a complex process that requires the involvement of many people and resources in the laboratory. To DNA identification of the victims, a daunting work had to be made by DNA laboratory staff in a collaborative effort with many partners. Efforts to implement good practice guidelines in Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) have revealed several important aspects that need to change in the forensic DNA laboratory. This article highlights the challenges of implementing DVI best practice guidelines in resource-poor settings, but with professionals from different sectors engaged in the same goal of briefly identifying victims and helping families and society.

Introduction: Anthropometry applied to newborns is a reliable indicator of the quality of fetal growth. The latter is influenced by genetic, racial and nutritional factors varying from one population to another, explaining why a standard cannot be applied to all populations. Research question: should the Caucasian frame of reference be dogmatically applied in our African context? Multicenter studies are therefore necessary;hence the interest of this work, the main objective of which was to describe the anthropometric profile of full-term newborns in the city of Douala. Methodology: We carried out a cross-sectional study with an analytical aim and prospective data collection in the maternity wards of the Douala General Hospital, Laquintinie Hospital, District hospitals of Deido, Nylon and Bonassama over a period of 4 months (January to April 2020). We were interested in any newborn, born alive, vaginally or by cesarean section, seen in the first 24 hours from a full-term single-fetal pregnancy whose mother had given consent. We excluded newborns whose term was unclear and those with congenital malformations or signs of embryo-foetopathy. Data collection was done using structured and pre-tested survey sheets. The study variables were obstetric and anthropometric. Statistical analyzes were carried out with CS Pro 7.3 and SPSS version 25.0 software. The Student, Chi-square and Fischer tests were used to compare the means of the variables, the percentages with a significance threshold P value Results: during the study period, 305 full-term newborns were included, divided into 172 boys and 133 girls. The average anthropometric parameters of the full-term newborn in the city of Douala were: average weight: 3305 grams, average height: 49.8 centimeters, average head circumference: 34.6 centimeters, average upper arm circumference: 11.3 centimeters, circumference average thoracic: 32.8 centimeters. A quantum cascade laser infrared spectrometer for CO_2 stable isotope analysis：Field implementation at a hydrocarbon contaminated site under bio-remediation

Real-time methods to monitor stable isotope ratios of CO_2 are needed to identify biogeochemical origins of CO_2 emissions from the soil–air interface. An isotope ratio infra-red spectrometer（IRIS） has been developed to measure CO_2 mixing ratio with δ~13C isotopic signature, in addition to mixing ratios of other greenhouse gases（CH_4, N2_O）. The original aspects of the instrument as well as its precision and accuracy for the determination of the isotopic signature δ~13C of CO_2 are discussed. A first application to biodegradation of hydrocarbons is presented, tested on a hydrocarbon contaminated site under aerobic bio-treatment. CO_2 flux measurements using closed chamber method is combined with the determination of the isotopic signature δ~13C of the CO_2 emission to propose a non-intrusive method to monitor in situ biodegradation of hydrocarbons. In the contaminated area, high CO_2 emissions have been measured with an isotopic signature δ~13C suggesting that CO_2 comes from petroleum hydrocarbon *** first field implementation shows that rapid and accurate measurement of isotopic signature of CO_2 emissions is particularly useful in assessing the contribution of contaminant degradation to the measured CO_2 efflux and is promising as a monitoring tool for aerobic bio-treatment.

Esca disease,which attacks the wood of grapevine,has become increasingly devastating during the past three decades and represents today a major concern in all wine-producing *** disease is attributed to a group of systematically diverse fungi that are considered to be latent pathogens,however,this has not been conclusively *** study presents the first in-depth comparison between the mycota of healthy and diseased plants taken from the same vineyard to determine which fungi become invasive when foliar symptoms of esca *** unprecedented high fungal diversity,158 species,is here reported exclusively from grapevine wood in a single Swiss vineyard *** identical mycota inhabits wood of healthy and diseased adult plants and presumed esca pathogens were widespread and occurred in similar frequencies in both plant *** esca-associated fungi are not transmitted from adult to nursery plants through the grafting *** the presumed esca-associated fungal pathogens are most likely saprobes decaying already senescent or dead wood resulting from intensive pruning,frost or other mecanical injuries as *** cause of esca disease therefore remains elusive and requires well executive scientific *** results question the assumed pathogenicity of fungi in other diseases of plants or animals where identical mycota are retrieved from both diseased and healthy individuals.

Effect of ytterbium on sodium current and its kinetics in rat hippocampal neurons

This study addressed the effects of Yb3+ on voltage-gated sodium currents in rat hippocampal neurons using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. Voltage-clamp recordings in single neurons were filtered and stored in a computer. Yb3+ increased the amplitude of sodium currents in a concentration-dependent and voltage-dependent manner. The 50 % enhancement concentration of Yb3+ on sodium currents was about 8.97 lmol/L, which was different from the inhibitory effects of Yb3+ on potassium current. The analysis on the activation and inactivation kinetics of Na+ current showed that 100 lmol/L Yb3+ did not change the process of activation and inactivation. In addition, the times reaching the peak of current(t) and inactivated time constant(s) were voltage dependent. 100 lmol/L Yb3+ significantly prolonged the time to peak at-70 and-80 mV. The effect disappeared at the positive direction of-70 mV. Furthermore, Yb3+ decreased s values to more positive values than-80 mV. In total, Yb3+ did not change the process of activation, but impelled inactivated process. Yb3+ mainly increased the Na+ current through changing its conductance. It might be one of the mechanisms that Yb3+ affected the hippocampal neurons.
