Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients have a markedly higher risk of developing *** multiple factors contribute to this predisposition,one of these involves the increased secretion of amylin,or islet amyloid polypeptide,that accompanies the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes *** amyloid polypeptide accumulation has undoubtedly been implicated in various forms of dementia,including Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia,but the exact mechanisms underlying islet amyloid polypeptide’s causative role in dementia are *** this review,we have summarized the literature supporting the various mechanisms by which islet amyloid polypeptide accumulation may cause neuronal damage,ultimately leading to the clinical symptoms of *** discuss the evidence for islet amyloid polypeptide deposition in the brain,islet amyloid polypeptide interaction with other amyloids implicated in neurodegeneration,neuroinflammation caused by islet amyloid polypeptide deposition,vascular damage induced by islet amyloid polypeptide accumulation,and islet amyloid polypeptide-induced *** are very few therapies approved for the treatment of dementia,and of these,clinical responses have been controversial at ***,investigating new,targetable pathways is vital for identifying novel therapeutic strategies for treating *** such,we conclude this review by discussing islet amyloid polypeptide accumulation as a potential therapeutic target not only in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus but as a future target in treating or even preventing dementia associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Bilateral Co-authorship Indicators Based on Fractional Counting

Purpose: In this contribution we provide two new co-authorship indicators based on fractional counting. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the idea of fractional counting we reflect on what should be an acceptable indicator for co-authorship between two entities. From this reflection we propose an indicator, the co-authorship score, denoted as cs, using the harmonic mean. Dividing this new indicator by the classical co-authorship indicator based on full counting, leads to a co-authorship intensity ***: we show that the indicators we propose have many necessary or at least highly desirable properties for a proper cs-score. It is pointed out that the two new indicators can be used for countries, but also for institutions and other pairs of entities. A small example shows the feasibility of the co-authorship score and the co-authorship intensity *** limitations: The indicators are not yet tested in real *** implications: As the notions of co-authorship and collaboration have many aspects, we think that our contribution may help policy management to take yet another aspect into account as part of a multi-faceted description of research ***/value: The indicators we propose cover yet another aspect of co-authorship.

America's first documented wooden covered bridge was erected at Philadelphia,Pennsylvania in *** were constructed within two decades and at least 10,000 by the later *** settlers moved west,broad rivers were crossed with inventive structures incorporating timber trusses ingeniously developed by *** covered bridges because of the roof and siding needed to protect the timber trusses,they became ubiquitous features on the American *** the past two centuries,most covered bridges were lost to flood,ice,arson,lightening,decay,as well as"progress,"replaced by"modern"iron,concrete,and steel *** some 700 covered bridges remaining,many are mere replicas of their original forms no longer supported by timber *** historic bridges remain largely from the last half of the 1800s while civic boosterism has led to claims of earlier dates with often questionable *** essay presents three wooden covered bridges constructed in the 1820s along a 10-mile stretch of the wallkill River in New Paltz,New *** the three,only Perrine's Bridge,constructed first in 1821 and covered in 1822,is still standing with intact Burr timber ***'s is an iconic structure with exceptional heritage value because of authentic re-building and restoration in 1834,1846,1917,and *** documentary records,this essay establishes an accurate intertwined chronology for the three bridges,detailing nineteenth century building practices and contentious mid-twentieth century struggles pitting preservationists wanting authentic restoration against those wanting removal.

Background information is provided about the web 2.0 related term altmetrics. This term is placed in the context of the broader field of informetrics. The term influmetrics is proposed as a better term for altmetrics. The importance of considering research products and not just scientific publications is highlighted. Issues related to peer review and making funding decisions within a multi-metric approach are discussed and brought in relation with the new metrics field.

Algebraic manipulation detection codes are a cryptographic primitive that was introduced by Cramer et al. (Eurocrypt 2008). It encompasses several methods that were previously used in cheater detection in secret sharing. Since its introduction, a number of additional applications have been found. This paper contains a detailed exposition of the known results about algebraic manipulation detection codes as well as some new results.

Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is a highly-lethal surgical emergency. Several pathophysiologic events (arterial obstruction, venous thrombosis and diffuse vasospasm) lead to a sudden decrease in mesenteric blood flow. Ischemia/reperfusion syndrome of the intestine is responsible for systemic abnormalities, leading to multi-organ failure and death. Early diagnosis is difficult because the clinical presentation is subtle, and the biological and radiological diagnostic tools lack sensitivity and specificity. Therapeutic options vary from conservative resuscitation, medical treatment, endovascular techniques and surgical resection and revascularization. A high index of suspicion is required for diagnosis, and prompt treatment is the only hope of reducing the mortality rate. Studies are in progress to provide more accurate diagnostic tools for early diagnosis. AMI can complicate the post-operative course of patients following cardio-pulmonary bypass (CPB). Several factors contribute to the systemic hypo-perfusion state, which is the most frequent pathophysiologic event. In this particular setting, the clinical presentation of AMI can be misleading, while the laboratory and radiological diagnostic tests often produce inconclusive results. The management strategies are controversial, but early treatment is critical for saving lives. Based on the experience of our team, we consider prompt exploratory laparotomy, irrespective of the results of the diagnostic tests, isthe only way to provide objective assessment and adequate treatment, leading to dramatic reduction in the mortality rate.
