Investigation on the phase shifts of extinction and phase gratings in polymethyl methacrylate

The phase shifts of the extinction and refractive index gratings to the illumination pattern are revealed in doped polymethyl methacrylate （PMMA）. The dynamic process of these shifts is studied via two-wave coupling at 351 nm. It is shown that these shifts are from the strain and the shrinkage inside the sample and accompanied with the photo-repolymerization process during the building process of the holographic grating. Such shifts will cause obvious energy exchange between the two recording beams and enough attention should be paid to the nonlocal property of the holographic gratings of the material in the application.

Dear Editor,In early breast cancer,the prognostic value of the num-ber of macroscopically metastasized axillary nodes has been recognized in earlier reports[1].However,the impact of microscopic tumour cell deposits on the sur-vival outcome of early breast cancer patients is still debated[2].This issue has gained increasing attention since the implementation of sentinel node biopsy in axil-lary node staging for tailoring breast cancer treatments,and the status of the single resected node would deter-mine the clinical decision of whether or not to perform the axillary lymph node dissection[3].Moreover,this issue raises more questions on whether to administer primary or adjuvant systemic treatment for patients with lymph nodes bearing isolated tumour cells(pN0[i+])or micrometastases(pN1mi).Despite the wide debate on the clinical treatment dilemma encountered by early breast cancer patients with microscopic tumour cell deposits,the biology underlying different pathologi-cal presentations at microscopic level(pN0,pN0[i+],pN1mi)and the disease outcomes remain poorly *** an attempt to shed some light on this topic,we have analyzed,in the context of dormancy-based metastasis development model[4],early breast cancer patients con-ventionally classified as pN0(tumour foci with largest diameter≤2 mm)[5]by systematically reassessing their tumor recurrence dynamics following primary tumour resection at a single institution.

The aim of this review is to offer dietary advice for individuals with spinal cord injury(SCI)and neurogenic bowel *** this in mind,we consider health conditions that are dependent on the level of lesion including skeletal muscle atrophy,autonomic dysreflexia and neurogenic *** addition,SCI is often associated with a sedentary lifestyle,which increases risk for osteoporosis and diseases associated with chronic low-grade inflammation,including cardiovascular and chronic kidney *** Mediterranean diet,along with exercise and dietary supplements,has been suggested as an anti-inflammatory intervention in individuals with ***,individuals with chronic SCI have a daily intake of whole fruit,vegetables and whole grains lower than the recommended dietary allowance for the general *** studies have reported an increase in neurogenic bowel dysfunction symptoms after high fiber intake;therefore,this finding could explain the low consumption of plant *** consumption of fibre induces dysbiosis,which is associated with bothendotoxemia and *** can be reduced by exercise and diet in individuals with ***,to summarize our viewpoint,we developed a Mediterranean diet-based diet and exercise pyramid to integrate nutritional recommendations and exercise *** guidelines come from previously suggested recommendations for military veterans with disabilities and individuals with SCI,chronic kidney diseases,chronic pain and irritable bowel *** also considered the recent exercise guidelines and position stands for adults with SCI to improve muscle strength,flexibility and cardiorespiratory fitness and to obtain cardiometabolic ***,dietary advice for Paralympic athletes is suggested.

Trypanosoma rangeli and *** are both parasitic unicellular species that infect *** ***,the causative agent of Chagas disease,*** is an infective and non-pathogenic parasite for humans,but pathogenic for vectors from the Rhodnius *** both species can coexist in different hosts and overlap their infective cycles but very little is known about the infection of *** in mammalian cells,we decided to characterize both the development of this parasite in cell culture and the effect of therapeutic agents with potential trypanocidal action on *** found that *** exhibits a cycle of infection in Vero cells similar to that for *** and that the repurposed drug,17-AAG,and the natural extract Artemisia *** oil produce a toxic effect on epimastigotes showing a trypanocidal action from the fifth day of *** treatments also affected the infection of trypomastigotes and reduced the capacity of replication of amastigotes of *** ***/*** coinfection cases have been reported,the finding of drugs with potential activity against both species could be significant in the ***,studies of susceptibility of both species to drugs could also help to know the different mechanisms of pathogenicity in humans displayed by *** that are absent in ***.

Background: In well-selected cases, flaps can play a pivotal role in optimizing outcomes in the acute phase of burns. A previous redundant flap could be reused or recycled as a donor site from which a new flap could be raised. Case presentation: We report the case of a patient with full thickness burns on both legs, leading to the exposure of joints of the right ankle and the right foot and left patellar tendon. The right lower extremity was covered with a free musculo-cutaneous latissimus dorsi flap. Then, a musculo-cutaneous cross-leg flap pedicled on the anterior branch and centered on a perforator was harvested from the previous redundant flap to cover the controlateral knee. Conclusion: Sequential flap coverage can be considered in cases of extensive soft tissue defects and particularly in burns. This case illustrates that re-using a redundant part of a previous flap to cover another defect is a safe and interesting alternative in the event of a lack of donor sites or to save donor sites for later reconstruction of contracted burn scars.

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the second most common genital malignancy in women and is the most lethal gynecological malignancy,with an estimated five-year survival rate of 39%.Despite efforts to develop an effective ovarian cancer screening method,60% of patients still present with advanced *** management using surgical cytoreduction to decrease the tumor load to aminimum,and intraperitoneal chemotherapy to eliminate microscopic disease on peritoneal surface,has the potential to greatly improve quality of life and to have an impact on survival in ovarian cancer *** achieving clinical remission after completion of initial treatment,most patients (60%) with advanced EOC will ultimately develop recurrent disease or show drug resistance;the eventual rate of curability is less than 30%.Given the poor outcome of women with advanced EOC,it is imperative to continue to explore novel therapies.

Predicting lower limb periprosthetic joint infections: A review of risk factors and their classification

AIM To undertook a systematic review to determine factors that increase a patient's risk of developing lower limb periprosthetic joint infections(PJI).METHODS This systematic review included full-text studies that reviewed risk factors of developing either a hip or knee PJI following a primary arthroplasty published from January 1998 to November 2016. A variety of keywords were used to identify studies through international databases referencing hip arthroplasty, knee arthroplasty, infection, and risk factors. Studies were only included if they included greater than 20 patients in their study cohort, and there was clear documentation of the statistical parameter used; specifically P-value, hazard ratio, relative risk, or/and odds ratio(OR). Furthermore a quality assessment criteria for the individual studies was undertaken to evaluate the presence of record and reporting bias. RESULTS Twenty-seven original studies reviewing risk factors relating to primary total hip and knee arthroplasty infections were included. Four studies(14.8%) reviewed PJI of the hip, 3(11.21%) of the knee, and 20(74.1%) reviewed both joints. Nineteen studies(70.4%) were retrospective and 8(29.6%) prospective. Record bias was identified in the majority of studies(66.7%). The definition of PJI varied amongst the studies but there was a general consensus to define infection by previously validated methods. The most significant risks were the use of preoperative high dose steroids(OR = 21.0, 95%CI: 3.5-127.2, P < 0.001), a BMI above 50(OR = 18.3, P < 0.001), tobacco use(OR = 12.76, 95%CI: 2.47-66.16, P= 0.017), body mass index below 20(OR = 6.00, 95%CI: 1.2-30.9, P = 0.033), diabetes(OR = 5.47, 95%CI: 1.77-16.97, P = 0.003), and coronary artery disease(OR = 5.10, 95%CI: 1.3-19.8, P = 0.017).CONCLUSION We have highlighted the need for the provider to optimise modifiable risk factors, and develop strategies to limit the impact of non-modifiable factors.

Parental effects occur whenever the phenotype of parents or the environment that they experience influences the phenotype and fitness of their offspring, In birds, parental effects are often mediated by the size and biochemical quality of the eggs in terms of maternally transferred components. Exogenous antioxidants are key egg components that accomplish crucial physiological functions during early life. Among these, vitamin E plays a vital role during prenatal development when the intense metabolism accompanying rapid embryo growth results in overproduction of pro-oxidant molecules. Studies of captive birds have demonstrated the positive effect of vitamin E supplementation on diverse phenotypic traits of hatchling and adult individuals, but its effects on embryo phenotype has never been investigated neither in captivity nor under a natural selection regime. In the present study, we experimentally tested the effect of the in ovo supplementation of vitamin E on morphological traits and oxidative status of yellow-legged gull （Larus michahellis） embryos. The supplementation of vitamin E promoted somatic growth in embryos soon before hatching, but did not affect their oxidative status. Our results suggest that maternally transferred vitamin E concentrations are optimized to prevent imbalances of oxidative status and the consequent raise of oxidative damage in yellow-legged gull embryos during prenatal development.
