numerical investigation into the influence of the punch shape on the mechanical behavior of pharmaceutical powders during compaction

During the production of pharmaceutical tablets using powder compaction, certain common problems can occur, such as sticking, tearing, cutting, and lamination. In the past, the compressibility of the powder was calculated only along the axis of the device; consequently, critical areas of the material throughout the volume could not be identified. Therefore, finite element method （FEM） can be used to predict these defects in conjunction with the use of an appropriate constitutive model. This article summarizes the current research in the field of powder compaction, describes the Drucker-Prager Cap model calibration procedure and its implementation in FEM, and also examines the mechanical behavior of powder during compaction. In addition, the mechanical behavior of pharmaceutical powders in relation to changes in friction at the wall of the system is examined, and the dependence of lubrication effect on the geometry of the compaction space is also investigated. The influence of friction on the compaction process for the flat-face, fiat-face radius edge, and standard convex tablets is examined while highlighting how the effects of friction change depending on the shape of these tablets.

Experimental investigations of internal energy dissipation during fracture of fiber-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete

Split-cylinder fracture of fiber-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC)was examined using two complementary techniques:X-ray computed tomography (CT)and acoustic emission (AE).Fifty-mm-diameter specimens of two different fiber types were scanned both before and after load *** the CT images,fiber orientation was evaluated to establish optimum and pessimum specimen orientations,at which fibers would have maximum and minimum effect,*** expected,fiber orientation affected both the peak load and the toughness of the specimen,with the optimum toughness being between 20% and 30%higher than the *** AE energy was also affected *** CT scans of the specimens were used to measure internal damage. Damage was quantified in terms of internal energy dissipation due to both matrix cracking and fiber pullout by using calibration measurements for *** results showed that fiber pullout was the dominant energy dissipation mechanism;however,the sum of the internal energy dissipation measured amounted to only 60% of the total energy dissipated by the specimens as measured by the net work of *** is postulated that localized compaction of the UHPC matrix as well as internal friction between fractured fragments makes up the balance of internal energy dissipation.

Influence of parameters on the microstructure of a duplex stainless steel joint welded by a GMAW welding process

Duplex stainless steels（DSSs） are widely used in industry for their desirable properties. Any fusion welding technique modifies the microstructure and, consequently, the properties of the material. This paper presents a parametric study of the variables that determine the energy contribution（current, voltage and welding speed） and the structural modifications produced during gas metal arc welding. The analysis comprises metallographic study,phase balance, dimensioning of the weld beads and tensile and hardness tests. The influence of the variables studied on the thermal cycles obtained（temperatures reached and cooling rate） was determined by using a finite element model. The results showed that, in addition to the indicated parameters, the parameter power transfer per volume（W/m3） and the geometry in the bead must be controlled due to their influence on the heat flow distribution and phase balance.

We directly measure optical bound states in the continuum(BICs)by embedding a photodetector into a photonic crystal *** BICs observed in our experiment are the result of accidental phase matching between incident,reflected and in-plane waves at seemingly random wave vectors in the photonic band *** measurements were confirmed through a rigorously coupled-wave analysis simulation in conjunction with temporal coupled mode *** mixing between photonic crystal slab modes was observed and described using a plane wave expansion *** ability to probe the field intensity inside the photonic crystal and thereby to directly measure BICs represents a milestone in the development of integrated opto-electronic devices based on BICs.

Studies of ultrasonic dehydration efficiency

The aim of this investigation was to define the effectiveness of non-contact drying using ultrasonic vibrations. Disk radiators were used for carrying out experiments, and a special drying chamber was designed to provide resonant amplification of ultrasonic vibrations (from 130 to 150 dB). Drying of ginseng and other vegetables demonstrated that the application of ultrasonic vibrations reduced power inputs by 20% in comparison with convective drying. It also led to a decrease of 6% in final moisture content, if the duration of drying was constant. The level of intensification of ultrasonic drying was high (up to 50 g for 1 kg of drying material), which helped to lower the temperature of the drying agent and improve the quality of the dried products.

Utility of short-term telemetry heart rhythm monitoring and CHA2DS2-VASc stratification in patients presenting with suspected cerebrovascular accident

BACKGROUnD Inpatient telemetry heart rhythm monitoring overuse has been linked to higher healthcare *** To evaluate if CHA2DS2-VASc score could be used to indicate if a patient admitted with possible cerebrovascular accident(CVA)or transient ischemic attack(TIA)requires inpatient telemetry *** A total of 257 patients presenting with CVA or TIA and placed on telemetry monitoring were analyzed *** investigated the utility of telemetry monitoring to diagnose atrial fibrillation/flutter and the CHA2DS2-VASc scoring tool to stratify the risk of having CVA/TIA in these *** In our study population,63(24.5%)of the patients with CVA/TIA and telemetry monitoring were determined to have no ischemic neurologic *** the 194(75.5)patients that had a confirmed CVA/TIA,only 6(2.3%)had an arrhythmia detected during their inpatient telemetry monitoring *** with a confirmed CVA/TIA had a statistically significant higher CHA2DS2-VASc score compared to individuals without an ischemic event(3.59 vs 2.61,PnCLUSIOn Given the low percentage of inpatient arrhythmias identified,further research should focus on discretionary use of inpatient telemetry on higher risk patients to diagnose the arrhythmias commonly leading to CVA/TIA.A prospective study assessing event rate of CVA/TIA in patients with higher CHA2DS2-VASc score should be performed to validate the CHA2DS2-VASc score as a possible risk stratifying tool for patients at risk for CVA/TIA.

Role of Stable Isotopes in Life——Testing Isotopic Resonance Hypothesis

Stable isotopes of most important biological elements, such as C, H, n and O, affect living organisms. In rapidly growing species, deuterium and to a lesser extent other heavy isotopes reduce the growth rate. At least for deuterium it is known that its depletion also negatively impacts the speed of biological processes. As a rule, living organisms ＂resist＂ changes in their isotopic environment, preferring natural isotopic abundances. This preference could be due to evolutionary optimization; an additional effect could be due to the presence of the ＂isotopic resonance＂. The isotopic resonance phenomenon has been linked to the choice of earliest amino acids, and thus af- fected the evolution of genetic code. To test the isotopic resonance hypothesis, literature data were analyzed against quantitative and qualitative predictions of the hypothesis. Four studies provided five independent datasets, each in very good quantitative agreement with the predictions. Thus, the isotopic resonance hypothesis is no longer simply plausible; it can now be deemed likely. Additional testing is needed, however, before full acceptance of this hypothesis.

Improving the performance of LOX/kerosene upper stage rocket engines

Improved liquid rocket engine cycles were proposed and analyzed via comparison with existing staged combustion and gas-generator *** key features of the proposed cycles are regenerative cooling of thrust chamber by oxygen and subsequent use of this oxygen for driving one or two oxygen *** fuel pump(s)are driven in a conventional manner,for example,using a fuel-rich gas-generator *** with staged combustion cycle based on oxygen-rich pre-burner showed that one of the proposed semi-expander cycles has a specific impulse only on 0.4%lower while providing much lower oxygen temperature,more efficient tank pressurizing system and built-in roll *** semi-expander cycle can be considered as a more reliable and cost-effective alternative of staged combustion *** semi-expander cycle can be considered as an improvement of gas-generator *** proposed semi-expander cycles were developed as a derivative of thrust chamber regenerative cooling performed by *** of existing oxygen/kerosene engines showed that replacing of kerosene regenerative cooling with oxygen allows a significant increase of achievable specific impulse,via optimization of mixture *** is especially the case for upper stage *** increasing of propellants average density can be considered as an additional benefit of mixture ratio *** was demonstrated that oxygen regenerative cooling of thrust chamber is a feasible and the most promising option for oxygen/kerosene *** of oxygen regenerative cooling and semi-expander cycles potentially allows creating the oxygen/kerosene propulsion systems with minimum specific impulse *** is important that such propulsion systems can be fully based on inherited and well-proven technical solutions.A hypothetic upper stage engine with thrust 19.6 kn was chosen as a prospective candidate for theoretical analysis of the proposed semi-expander *** newly-developed software RECS
