Multi-dimensional Simulation of Phase Change by a 0D-2D Model Coupling via Stefan Condition

Considering phase changes associated with a high-temperature molten material cooled down from the outside,this work presents an improvement of the modelling and the numerical simulation of such processes for an application pertaining to the safety of light water nuclear *** a core meltdown accident,the behaviour of the core melt(aka corium)into a steel vessel is of tremendous importance when evaluating the vessel *** correctly the heat fluxes requires the numerical simulation of the interaction between the liquid material and its solid counterpart which forms during the solidification process,but also may melt *** simulate this configuration,encoun-tered in various industrial applications,one considers a bi-phase model constituted by a liquid phase in contact and interaction with its solid *** liquid phase may solidify in presence of low energetic source,while the solid phase may melt due to an intense heat flux from the high-temperature *** the frame of the in-house legacy code,several simplifying assumptions(0D multi-layer discretization,instantaneous heat transfer via a quadratic temperature profile in solids)are made for the modelling of such phase *** the present work,these shortcomings are illustrated and further overcome by solving a 2D heat conduction model in the solid by a mixed Raviart-Thomas finite element method coupled to the liquid phase due to heat and mass exchanges through Stefan *** liquid phase is modeled with a 0D multi-layer *** 0D-liquid and 2D-solid mod-els are coupled by a Stefan like phase change interface *** sanity checks are performed to assess the validity of the approach on 1D and 2D academical configurations for which exact or reference solutions are *** more advanced situations(genu-ine multi-dimensional phase changes and an"industrial-like scenario")are simulated to verify the appropriate behavior of the obtained coupled simulation schem

The co-pyrolysis of coal and biomass has proven to be a promising route to produce liquid and gaseous fuels as well as specific value-added chemicals while contributing to mitigating CO_(2) *** interactions between the co-processed feedstocks,however,need to be elucidated to support the development of such a thermochemical conversion *** this context,the present work covers the kinetic analysis of the co-pyrolysis of a bituminous coal with poplar *** this research,biomass was blended with coal at two different mass ratios(10%(mass)and 20%(mass)).Thermogravimetric analyses were carried out with pure and blended samples at four heating rates(5,10,15 and 30℃·min^(-1)).A direct comparison of experimental and theoretical results(based on a simple additivity rule)failed to yield a clear-cut conclusion regarding the existence of synergistic *** analyses have therefore been achieved using two model-free methods(the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose models)to estimate the rate constant parameters related to the pyrolysis process.A significant decrease of the activation energy has thus been observed when adding wood to coal(activation energies associated with the blend containing 20%(mass)of biomass being even lower than those estimated for pure wood at low conversion degrees).This trend was attributed to the possible presence of synergies whose related mechanisms are *** rate constant parameters derived by means of the two tested models were finally used to simulate the evolution of the conversion degree of each sample as a function of the temperature,thus leading to a satisfying agreement between measured and simulated data.

Mechanisms of electrochemical magnesium(de)alloying of Mg-Sn and Mg-Pb polymorphs

Different polymorphs of Mg-Sn and Mg-Pb intermetallic compounds were prepared by high-energy mechanical alloying and then investigated as active material in magnesium batteries. Beside thermodynamically stable Mg_(2)Sn and Mg_(2)Pb crystallizing in the anti-fluorite structure, other polymorphs Mg_(~2)Sn and Mg_(~2)Pb were prepared by increasing the ball-milling time. The first dealloying process is almost complete only for the cubic polymorphs, then similar capacities are observed during the subsequent alloying and dealloying *** to operando X-ray diffraction, the electrochemical mechanism is revealed and shows that the cubic polymorphs Mg_(2)Sn and Mg_(2)Pb tend to preferentially form during the alloying whatever the pristine intermetallic. Weak traces of Mg_(~2)Sn and Mg_(~2)Pb are observed during the alloying, suggesting that these polymorphs act as a by-product and/or an intermediate phases of the electrochemical process. Finally, the compatibility of cubic Mg_(2)Sn and Mg_(2)Pb with Mg(TFSI)_(2)-based electrolyte is confirmed in full cell vs. a positive electrode based on the Chevrel phase Mo6S8, although limited performance is achieved. This fundamental work provides new insights in the behavior of alloy-type negative electrodes for magnesium-ion batteries.

Tree-ring:a suitable implement for spatial and temporal fire distribution analysis in savanna woodland and dry forest

Preoperative albumin level is a marker of alveolar echinococcosis recurrence after hepatectomy

AIM To identify a preoperative blood marker predictive of alveolar echinococcosis(AE) recurrence after *** All consecutive patients who underwent operation for liver AE at the lausanne University Hospital(CHUV) between January 1992 and December 2015 were included in this retrospective study. Preoperative laboratory values of leukocytes, mean corpuscular volume(MCV), red blood cell distribution width(RDW), thrombocytes, C-reactive protein(CRP) and albumin were collected and analyzed. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to determine the risk factors for AE recurrence after liver resection. A receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve was used to define the best discrimination threshold of the blood marker. Moreover, recurrencefree survival curves were calculated using the KaplanMeier *** The cohort included 68 adult patients(37 females) with median age of 61 years [interquartile range(IQR): 46-71]. Eight of the patients(12%) presented a recurrence over a median follow-up time of 76 mo(IQR: 34-128). Median time to recurrence was 10 mo(IQR: 6-11). Median preoperative leukocyte, MCV, RDW,thrombocyte and CRP levels were similar between recurrent and non-recurrent cases. Median preoperative albumin level was 43 g/l(IQR: 41-45) for nonrecurrent cases and 36 g/l(IQR: 33-42) for recurrent cases(P = 0.005). The area under the ROC curve for preoperative albumin level to predict recurrence was 0.840(95%CI: 0.642-1, P = 0.002). The cutoff albumin level value was 37.5 g/l for sensitivity of 94.5% and specificity of 75%. In multivariate analysis, preoperative albumin and surgical resection margins were independent predictors of AE recurrence(HR = 0.099, P = 0.007 and HR = 0.182, P = 0.045 respectively).CONClUSION low preoperative albumin level was associated with AE recurrence in the present cohort. Thus, preoperative albumin may be a useful biomarker to guide follow-up.

Morphological and Molecular Identification of Fungi Associated with Sesame Diseased Plants of the Three Agroclimatic Zones of Burkina Faso

Sesame is Burkina Faso’s second essential agricultural export after cotton. It’s consequently a supply of income for producers and foreign exchange for the country. However, sesame production is characterized by low average yields of about 538 kg·ha-1 at the farmer’s field as compared to the potential yield of the improved varieties (1500 - 2000 kg·ha-1). Fungal diseases are some of the major constraints to sesame production in Burkina Faso. The present study contributes to the development of means to control pathogenic fungi of this crop, which are responsible for significant losses. The objective is to identify the fungi associated with diseased sesame plant samples. To this end, 149 samples of diseased sesame plants were collected from different production sites located in three agro-climatic zones of the country. The analysis of the samples according to the blotting paper method, based on the morphological characteristics of the fungi, allowed the identification of 18 genera with prevalence rates from 2.68% to 97.98%. The most frequently identified genera were Macrophomina (97.98%), Cercospora (86.57%), Fusarium (85.23%), Phoma (62.41%) and Colletotrichum (61.07%). The results also showed a variable distribution of fungi according to the agro-climatic zone with the predominance of Macrophomina in all three zones. Molecular identification by DNA sequencing of 120 isolates belonging to the different fungi detected allowed the identification of 25 species of which the most representative were Macrophomina phaseolina, Cercospora sesami, Corynespora cassiicola, Alternaria simsimi, Alternaria porri, Fusarium oxysporum, F. fujikuroi, F. equiseti, Colletotrichum capsici, and C. gloesporiodes. The present study showed that diseased sesame plants collected from different production sites in Burkina Faso housed several species of fungi. Managing familial pancreatic cancer(FPC)is challenging for gastroenterologists,surgeons and ***-risk individuals(HRI)for pancreatic cancer(PC)(FPC or with germline mutations)are a heterogeneous group of subjects with a theoretical lifetime cumulative risk of PC over 5%.Screening is mainly based on annual magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)and endoscopic ultrasound(EUS).The goal of screening is to identify early-stage operable cancers or high-risk precancerous lesions(pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia or intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms with high-grade dysplasia).In the literature,target lesions are identified in 2%-5%of HRI who undergo *** appears to provide better identification of small solid lesions(0%-46%of HRI)and chronicpancreatitis-like parenchymal changes(14%-77%of HRI),while MRI is probably the best modality to identify small cystic lesions(13%-49%of HRI).There are no specific studies in HRI on the use of contrast-enhanced harmonic *** can also be used to obtain tissue ***,there is still limited evidence on the accuracy of imaging procedures used for screening or agreement on which patients to *** cost-effectiveness of screening is also *** new EUS-related techniques,such as searching for DNA abnormalities or protein markers in pancreatic fluid,appear to be promising.

Frequency of Transfusions and Risk Factor for Bleeding Risk to Guide a Blood-Sparing Program during Hip Arthroplasty in Gabon

Background: Hip arthroplasty is a surgery with a high risk of bleeding. The main objective of this study was to research risk factors for bleeding and transfusion in patients undergoing hip arthroplasty in order to guide a blood-saving program. Method: Retrospective, monocentric, descriptive and analytical study carried out from June 2011 to June 2021 at the Omar Bongo Ondimba army training hospital. The variables studied were demographic characteristics, biological variables, transfusion data, anesthetic and intraoperative data. The primary outcome was intraoperative or postoperative transfusion. A univariate and multivariate analysis was conducted to identify the factors associated with the occurrence of a transfusion. Results: Of the 276 patients included, 179 benefited from Total Hip Prosthesis (THP) and 97 from Intermediate Hip Prosthesis (IHP). Spinal anesthesia was performed in 67.4% of patients. The ASA 2 score predominated (65.9%). The transfusion incidence was 56.9% (157/276). Tranexamic acid was used in 16.3% (45/276) of patients. The average bleeding was 528 ± 405 ml. Preoperative anemia (OR = 0.78, 95% CI [0.66 - 0.91]) and total hip prosthesis (OR = 2.02 95% CI [1.11 - 3.67]) were predictors of bleeding and transfusion to be significant. The average serum hemoglobin predictive of a transfusion was 11.6 ± 1.8. ASA score and operative time were not found as risk factors for bleeding and transfusion. Conclusion: The incidence of transfusion is high. Preoperative anemia remains a major but modifiable risk factor unlike the choice of implant. The implementation of a patient blood management protocol could reduce this transfusion incidence.
