Elemental Composition of PM<sub>2.5</sub>in Araraquara City (Southeast Brazil) during Seasons with and without Sugar Cane Burning

Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter below 2.5 μm (PM2.5), present in polluted air, has been associated with a large spectrum of health impairments, mainly because of its deep deposition into the lungs. Araraquara City (Southeast Brazil) is surrounded by sugar-cane plantations, which are burned to facilitate the harvesting;this process causes environmental pollution due to the large amounts of soot that are released into the atmosphere. In this work, the elemental composition of PM2.5 was studied in two scenarios, namely in sugar-cane harvesting (HV) and in non-harvesting (NHV) seasons. the sampling strategy included one campaign in each season. PM2.5 was collected using a dichotomous sampler (10 L·min-1, 24 h) with PtFE filters. Information concerning the bulk elemental concentration was provided by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence. Enrichment factor analysis indicated that S, Cl, K, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb were highly enriched relative to their crustal ratios (to Al). Principal component analysis was used to get some insight about the sources of the elements. Principal component 1 (PC1) explained 30.5% of data variance. the elements that had high loading (>0.7) were: S, Cr, As, and Pb;these are associated with combustion of fossil fuels. In principal component 2 (PC2), Cl, Cu, Zn, and Cd showed high loadings;these elements are associated with biomass burning. the Ni concentration found is three times larger than the threshold of risk for lung cancer, as recommended by the World Health Organization.

In a previous paper, we proposed that a QCD gas that may be a possible candidate for the general theory of gravity (GR) ether may be comprised of ud~du~ exotic mesons. A method to determine the effective mass of the ud~du~ exotic meson and the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric scale factor equation of state dimensionless parameter, w, by measuring the pseudo-first order β decay rates expected to be inversely proportional to the QCD gas atmospheric density was given. Here, we propose to measure the β decay rate, t1/2, and the earth distance to the milky-way galaxy super massive black hole (SMBH), hSMBH, at the earth aphelion each year for several years, and fit the data with the linear curve: -lnt1/2 = ahSMBH + b. the slope parameter, a, and the free parameter, b, may be used to calculate the Kerr spin parameter and determine if the QCD gas density on the ergosphere remains constant in time, or alternatively, grows in time according to Corley and Jacobson’s proposed black hole laser process.

Identification of tree groups used by secondary cavity-nesting birds to simplify forest management in subtropical forests

Kinematic alterations after two high-intensity intermittent training protocols in endurance runners

Purpose:this study aimed to evaluate running kinematic characteristics during the early and late stages of 2 high-intensity intermittent training(HIIt)protocols with similar external load but different average running pace,as well as to compare the fatigue-induced changes during both HIIt protocols at a kinematic ***:Eighteen endurance runners were tested on a track on 2 occasions:10 runs of 400 m with 90-120 s recovery between running bouts(10 × 400 m),and 40 runs of 100 m with 25-30 s recovery between running bouts(40 × 100 m).Heart rate was monitored during both protocols;blood lactate accumulation and rate of perceived exertion were recorded after both exercises.A high-speed camera was used to measure sagittalplane kinematics at the first and last runs during both HIIt *** dependent variables were spatial-temporal parameters(step length and contact and flight time),joint angles during support(relative angles of the hip,knee,and ankle),and foot strike ***:High levels of exhaustion were reached by the athletes during both workouts(blood lactate accumulation>12 mmol/L,rate of perceived exertion>15;peak heart rate(HRpeak)>176 bpm).A within-protocol paired t test(first *** run)revealed no significant changes(p≥0.05)in kinematic variables during any of the HIIt sessions.A between-protocol comparison with the first run of each protocol revealed the effect of running speed on kinematics:+2.44 km/h during the 40 × 100 m:shorter contact and flight time(ptep length(p= 0.001);greater hip flexion(p = 0.031)and ankle extension(p = 0.001)at initial contact;smaller knee and ankle flexion(pt midstance;and greater hip extension at toe-off(pt sessions including runs for 15-90 s and performed at intensity above the velocity associated with maximal oxygen uptake did not consistently perturb the running kinematics of trained endurance runners.

High arsenic(As)and chromium(Cr)concentrations are currently receiving attention because of their negative effects on the environment and human *** inhabiting contaminated environments have developed resistance mechanisms against the toxicity of these ***,members of the bacterial genus Micrococcus have been isolated from different toxic metal-contaminated environments;however,knowledge concerning its resistance mechanisms to As and Cr toxicity remains *** luteus strains(An24,Mh,NE2tL6,and NE2ttS4)were isolated from the endosphere and soil of two heavy metal-contaminated sites in Mexico to identify differences in the resistance mechanisms by the *** *** strains were resistant to As(As^(3+)and As^(5+)),chromate,dichromate,cobalt,copper,nickel,and *** analysis indicated that the heavy metal-resistant strains(An24,Mh,NE2tL6,and NE2ttS4)could be assigned to the *** group and had more heavy metal-resistant genes(transporters,chaperones,and enzymes)compared to reference strains of the *** group,*** NCtC 2665^(t)and Micrococcus endophyticus JCM 16951^(t).the resistant bacteria were able to biotransform As^(3+)and As^(5+)through a carbon source-dependent *** biotransformation of As5+was potentially carried out in the cytoplasm through a thioredoxin-dependent pathway,which may be coupled with biosorption.A qualitative analysis of organic acids(OAs)identified a change in the OA profile of the metal-resistant strains that was As-or *** genomic and phenotypic findings suggest that the four *** group strains evaluated in the current study have developed resistance mechanisms that may enable their survival in contaminated sites.

Post-transplant biliary complications using liver grafts from deceased donors older than 70 years:Retrospective case-control study

BACKGROUND the shortage of liver grafts and subsequent waitlist mortality led us to expand the donor pool using liver grafts from older *** to determine the incidence,outcomes,and risk factors for biliary complications(BC)in liver transplantation(Lt)using liver grafts from donors aged>70 *** Between January 1994 and December 31,2019,297 Lts were performed using donors older than 70 *** excluding 47 Lt for several reasons,we divided 250 Lts into two groups,namely post-Lt BC(n=21)and without BC(n=229).this retrospective case-control study compared both *** Choledocho-choledochostomy without t-tube was the most frequent technique(76.2%in the BC group vs 92.6%in the non-BC group).twenty-one patients(8.4%)developed BC(13 anastomotic strictures,7 biliary leakages,and 1 nonanastomotic biliary stricture).Nine patients underwent percutaneous balloon dilation and nine required a Rouxen-Y hepaticojejunostomy because of dilation *** incidence of post-Lt complications(graft dysfunction,rejection,renal failure,and non-BC reoperations)was similar in both *** were no significant differences in the patient and graft survival between the ***,only three deaths were attributed to *** female donors were protective factors for BC,donor cardiac arrest was a risk *** the incidence of BC was relatively low on using liver grafts>70 *** could be managed in most cases by percutaneous dilation or Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy,without significant differences in the patient or graft survival between the groups.

Background. the role of combined positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PEt- Ct) in the diagnosis of recurrent ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma is uncertain because of previous reports that PEt has limited sensitivity in the detection of mucinous neoplasms. Case. A 71- year- old white woman presented with complaints of right lower quadrant pain and a palpable adnexal mass. Physical examination and transvaginal ultrasonography revealed a 12 × 13 cm cystic mass in the left side of the pelvis. Exploratory laparotomy, optimal tumor- reductive surgery, total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo- oophorectomy, appendectomy, and omentectomy were performed. the diagnosis was FIGO stage IIIC welldifferentiated ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma. the patient was treated with 6 cycles of carboplatin and paclitaxel. Four months after completing chemotherapy, the patient was noted to have an elevated serum CA125 level (72 U/mL), being otherwise asymptomatic. Findings on abdominal and pelvic Ct were compatible with postsurgical changes. PEt-Ct was performed and revealed increased metabolism along the posterior aspect of the right rectus abdominis muscle and abutting the anterior wall of an adjacent loop of bowel. Conclusion. PEt-Ct may identify clinically occult recurrent ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma.

Biomarkers and Echocardiography in the Postoperative Course of Pulmonary Resection Surgery

Background: the existence of different degrees of inflammatory reaction and right ventricular dysfunction after pulmonary resection is well known, though its detection and clinical relevance have not been sufficiently evaluated. the introduction of new biomarkers, particularly brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and its prohormone (proBNP), together with dynamic imaging techniques such as echocardiography, could prove useful in assessing such response. the aim of this study is to describe the kinetic curve of these biomarkers during uncomplicated pulmonary resection surgery. Furthemore we have studied the right ventricular function by echocardiography in these patients Methods: Demographic data, antecedents and certain perioperative parameters, as well as plasma proBNP, troponin t and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, were recorded in 38 patients who underwent pneumonectomy (n= 13 ) and lobectomy (n=25), before and 24, 48 and 72 hours after the operation. A transthoracic echocardiogram was carried out preoperatively and 72 hours after surgery. Results: ProBNP showed a significant increase 24 hours after surgery, with a maximum peak after 72 hours (pter 24 hours, with an inflammatory peak after 48 hours (pthe magnitude of the increase in proBNP and CRP was independent of the extent of resection (pneumonectomy versus lobectomy). Echocardiography showed a slight yet statistically significant decrease in right ventricular function (determined by tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, tAPSE) in the pneumonectomy subgroup (p=0.01). Conclusion: the plasma proBNP elevation curve allows simple evaluation of the degree and time course of right ventricular dysfunction in the immediate postoperative period of uncomplicated pulmonary resection surgery. In stable patients, magnitude of proBNP elevation has no clinical repercussions, while slight echocardiographic changes are detectable only in pneumonectomized patients. Further studies a
