Functional morphological alterations of human blood platelets induced by oxidatively modified low density lipoprotein (LDL) were studied with an in vitro model by means of electron microscopy, reflection contrast microscopy and quantitative image analysis. The oxidized LDL (50-300 μg/ml) induced the disc-sphere transformation of platelets, the formation of pseudopodia, centralization of granules and degranulation. Platelet plasma membrane was damaged by oxidized LDL leading to a lower electron density of he cytoplasm compared to controls. The monitoring of bedload transport processes in rivers is a still challenging task in research and the parameter effective transport width(ETW) allows, for the first time, a process description of the local variability of the bedload transport. In this paper, the distribution of bedload transport over a river crosssection was studied by statistically analyzing long-term monitoring data. Using an innovative integrated measurement system, combining geophones distributed over the river width with bedload traps and basket sampling, allows for continuous, high-resolution, long-term monitoring data of bedload transport characteristics to be generated. Geophone data can be used to record and describe bedload transport processes such as intensity, temporal variability, and local variability. One parameter observed was the ETW, which describes the width where bedload transport is taking place for different discharge classes in gravel bed rivers. With the help of a data series recorded over more than a decade, it is now possible, for the first time, to statistically describe the continuously and directly measured ETW. Hence, it became evident that the effective bedload transport width depends on the discharge rate and local transport capacity, and that bedload transport over the entire river width only occurs at high flows that prevail a few days a year.

The Superconducting Proton Linac （SPL） is the project for a superconducting, high current Haccelerator at CERN. To find dangerous higher order modes （HOMs） in the SPL superconducting cavities, simulation and analysis for the cavity model using simulation tools are necessary. The existing TESLA 9-cell cavity geometry data have been used for the initial construction of the models in HFSS. Monopole, dipole and quadrupole modes have been obtained by applying different symmetry boundaries on various cavity models. In calculation, scripting language in HFSS was used to create scripts to automatically calculate the parameters of modes in these cavity models （these scripts are also available in other cavities with different cell numbers and geometric structures）. The results calculated automatically are then compared with the values given in the TESLA paper. The optimized cavity model with the minimum error will be taken as the base for further simulation of the SPL cavities.

Herbalife hepatotoxicity: Evaluation of cases with positive reexposure tests

AIM: To analyze the validity of applied test criteria and causality assessment methods in assumed Herbalife hepatotoxicity with positive reexposure tests. METHODS: We searched the Medline database for suspected cases of Herbalife hepatotoxicity and retrieved 53 cases including eight cases with a positive unintentional reexposure and a high causality level for Herbalife. First, analysis of these eight cases focused on the data quality of the positive reexposure cases, requiring a baseline value of alanine aminotransferase(ALT) < 5 upper limit of normal (N) before reexposure, with Nas the upper limit of normal, and a doubling of the ALT value at reexposure as compared to the ALT value at baseline prior to reexposure. Second, reported methods to assess causality in the eight cases were evaluated, and then the liver specific Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) scale validated for hepatotoxicity cases was used for quantitative causality reevaluation. This scale consists of various specific elements with scores provided through the respective case data, and the sum of the scores yields a causality grading for each individual case of initially suspected hepatotoxicity. RESULTS: Details of positive reexposure test conditions and their individual results were scattered in virtually all cases, since reexposures were unintentional and allowed only retrospective rather than prospective assessments. In 1/8 cases, criteria for a positive reexposure were fulfilled, whereas in the remaining cases the reexposure test was classified as negative (n = 1), or the data were considered as uninterpretable due to missing information to comply adequately with the criteria (n = 6). In virtually all assessed cases, liver unspecific causality assessment methods were applied rather than a liver specific method such as the CIOMS scale. During the past 10 years, the Christian Science movement has discarded large expensive public relations efforts to concentrate on the writings of the founder, Mary Baker Eddy （1821-1910） and the central role of healing. This paper examines this seismic shift, delves into the reasons for the change of strategy, and suggests a renewed interest in the movement＇s history and other forms of outreach to help revive a movement that has been in decline just after World War II. Resources for this study are the monthly Christian Science Journal, resources of the Mary Baker Eddy Library in Boston, and the writer＇s own research and publications on the history of Christian Science.

An improved synthesis of rupintrivir (AG7088) was accomplished using three amino acids (L-glutamic acid, D-4-fluorophenylalanine, and L-valine) as the building blocks. The key fragment ketomethylene dipeptide isostere was constructed with the valine derivative and phenylpropionic acid derivative, followed by coupling with a lactam derivative and an isoxazole acid chloride to provide AG7088 totally in eight steps.

Nipple-sparing mastectomy(NSM) is a safe technique in patients who are candidates for conservation breast surgery. However, there is worry concerning its oncological safety and surgical outcome in terms of postoperative complications. The authors reviewed the literature to evaluate the oncological safety, patient selection, surgical techniques, and also to identify the factors influencing postoperative outcome and complication rates. Patient selection and safety related to NSM are based on oncological and anatomical parameters. Among the main criteria, the oncological aspects include the clinical stage of breast cancer, tumor characteristics and location including small, peripherally located tumors, without multicentricity, or for prophylactic mastectomy. Surgical success depends on coordinated planning with the oncological surgeon andcareful preoperative and intraoperative management. In general, the NSM reconstruction is related to autologous and alloplastic techniques and sometimes include contra-lateral breast surgery. Choice of reconstructive technique following NSM requires accurate consideration of various patient related factors, including: breast volume, degree of ptosis, areola size, clinical factors, and surgeon's experience. In addition, tumor related factors include dimension, location and proximity to the nipple-areola complex. Regardless of the fact that there is no unanimity concerning the appropriate technique, the criteria are determined by the surgeon's experience and the anatomical aspects of the breast. The positive aspects of the technique utilized should include low interference with the oncological treatment, reproducibility, and long-term results. Selected patients can have safe outcomes and therefore this may be a feasible option for early breast cancer management.
