Bacteriological and Physico-chemical characterisation of Liquid Wastes: The case of the University Hospital centre (UHc) of Yaoundé-cameroon

The untreated effluents generated by hospital activities contribute to the dissemination of pathogenic germs and multi-resistant bacteria, thus presenting a great potential danger for health and the environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the microbiological and physico-chemical quality of the effluents of the Yaoundé University Hospital centre and their impact on the environment. It was a prospective and analytical study on three sites where hospital effluents from the intensive care unit (Station A), the upstream of the wastewater treatment plant (Station B), and the gynaecology, surgery and hospitalisation departments (Station c) were sampled. Samples were collected in sterile glass bottles for bacteriological analyses and polyethylene bottles for physico-chemical analyses. The bacteriological parameters measured showed that the density of the bacterial species sought was very high at Station B with a predominance of the species Escherichia coli (57.36%). At Station A, total coliforms were very abundant (50.12%) and at Station c, the genus Pseudomonas was predominant (14.69%). Bacteria of the genus Streptococcus were represented by three species, namely: Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus faecalis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The Pseudomonas genus was also represented by 3 species, namely Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas maltophilia and Pseudomonas putida. The physico-chemical parameters showed that apart from temperature and conductivity, which were in compliance with the standards, the other had values higher than these standards. This study shows that untreated hospital effluent contains most of the bacteria involved in community, nosocomial infections and would be a potential source of risk to the surrounding population.

Bcl-x_L and Myeloid cell leukaemia-1 contribute to apoptosis resistance of colorectal cancer cells

AIM: To explore the role of Bcl-xL and Myeloid cell leukaemia (Mcl)-1 for the apoptosis resistance of colorectal carcinoma (cRc) cells towards current treat-ment modalities. METHODS: Bcl-xL and Mcl-1 mRNA and protein ex-pression were analyzed in cRc cell lines as well as human cRc tissue by Western blot,quantitative PcRand immunohistochemistry. Bcl-xL and Mcl-1 protein expression was knocked down or increased in cRc cell lines by applying specific siRNAs or expression plas-mids,respectively. After modulation of protein expres-sion,cRc cells were treated with chemotherapeutic agents,an antagonistic epidermal growth factor recep-tor (EGFR1) antibody,an EGFR1 tyrosine kinase inhibi-tor,or with the death receptor ligand TRAIL. Apoptosis induction and cell viability were analyzed. RESULTS: Here we show that in human cRc tis-sue and various cRc cell lines both Bcl-xL and Mcl-1 are expressed. Bcl-xL expression was higher in cRc tissue than in surrounding non-malignant tissue,both on protein and mRNA level. Mcl-1 mRNA expression was significantly lower in ma-lignant tissues. However,protein expression was slightly higher. Viability rates of cRc cells were significantly decreased after knock down of Bcl-xL expression,and,to a lower extent,after knock down of Mcl-1 expression. Furthermore,cells with reduced Bcl-xL or Mcl-1 expression was more sensitive towards oxaliplatin-and irinotecan-induced apoptosis,and in the case of Bcl-xL also towards 5-FU-induced apoptosis. On the other hand,upregulation of Bcl-xL by transfec-tion of an expression plasmid decreased chemothera-peutic drug-induced apoptosis. EGF treatment clearly induced Bcl-xL and Mcl-1 expression in cRc cells. Apop-tosis induction upon EGFR1 blockage by cetuximab or PD168393 was increased by inhibiting Mcl-1 and Bcl-xL expression. More strikingly,cD95-and TRAIL-induced apoptosis was increased by Bcl-xL knock down. cONcLUSION: Our data suggest that Bcl-xL and,to a lower extent,Mcl-1,are important anti-apoptotic factor

Early Postoperative Anticoagulation by Enoxaparin after Mechanical Aortic Valve Replacement

Background: The use of low molecular weight heparin for early anticoagulation after mechanical aortic valve replacement is still a matter of debate even more that the early postoperative phase is associated with maximum of thrombo-embolic and bleeding risks. The objective of this study is to verify the efficacy and the safety of low molecular weight heparin for the early anticoagulation after mechanical aortic valve replacement. Methods and Results: It is a prospective study conducted over 6 months and interested 40 consecutive patients (32 male and 8 female) with a mean age 53.83 ± 16.93 years (19-75 years) who underwent a mechanical aortic valve replacement and received enoxaparin as bridging therapy between continuous unfractionated heparin and fully effective vitamin K antagonist therapy. There was no in-hospital death and no in-hospital thromboembolic events. We report 2 major bleeding events (5%). conclusion: The use of low molecular weight heparin should be an alternative to explore for early anticoagulation after valve heart surgery and the results of our study must be verified by large randomized studies before drawing any hasty conclusions.

Growth temperature dependence of crystal symmetry in Nb-doped BaTiO_(3) thin films

Growth temperature effects on the microstructure of Nb-doped BaTiO_(3) thin films of the composition BaTi_(0.98)Nb_(0.02)O_(3) are studied using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).Reciprocal space maps and electron diffraction patterns show that the a-axis lattice parameter increases and the c-axis parameter decreases with increasing growth temperature,indicating a decrease of ***-field TEM images show low and high densities of threading defects in films grown at low and high temperatures,*** observations are discussed in terms of a hindering of the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition by a high defect density and a high unit cell volume.

Type VI Aplasia cutis congenita: About a case Report at University Teaching Hospital of Bouaké

Introduction: Aplasia cutis congenita is a rare congenital dermatosis of which type VI represents the Bart’s syndrome. The aim of this case is to describe the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and prognostic characteristics of this condition in a country with limited resources, for the improvement of prognosis and professional practice. Observation: This is a eutrophic newborn, born at term by vaginal delivery, who presented at birth with a unilateral absence of skin on the anteromedial aspect of the right leg starting from the knee and extending to the medial aspect of the right foot, with a dystrophy of the nail of the right big toe without any other visible physical malformation. The evolution was marked at D3 of life by the appearance of bullae on the right hand and elbow as well as on the posterior aspect of the neck, making epidermolysis bullosa suspect. The mother was 38 years old, 8th gesture, 7th pare with history of consanguinity and collodion baby. The association of a localized congenital absence of skin on the lower limbs, epidermolysis bullosa and a nail anomaly led to the diagnosis of congenital cutaneous aplasia of type VI of Frieden’s classification or Bart’s syndrome. The evolution was satisfactory on the 7th day of life with the beginning of scarring. The management was medical. The outcome was unfavorable with the appearance of sepsis and hemorrhage leading to death. conclusion: Although rare, the clinical diagnosis of Bart’s syndrome is simple. However, the management is complex and the prognosis is reserved. To improve this prognosis, the treatment must guarantee excellent control of the infectious and hemorrhagic risks, an adhesion and good therapeutic compliance by the parents and a rigorous monitoring.

Preparation of nano-crystalline tungsten powders from gaseous WO_(2)(OH)_(2)

Industrial Elaboration by Extrusion of PVc Tubes Loaded with Micronized Dura Palm Kernel Shell Powder

We present in this work how to use the dura palm kernel shell powders as loads for the elaboration by extrusion of PVc tubes. The transformation of dura palm kernel shells into micronized shell powder as well as its characterization was the subject of recent work. We carried out, the formulations by using the industrial scales of precision, the mixtures of the instrants with an industrial machine of mark HENSHLLE N˚2 MAIN 570762, the routine tests by ATG/DSc then by IRTF, the extrusion of the tubes with an extruder twin-screw with 9 rooms of transformation finally the tests of conformity by the observations and the analyses. We obtained for the formulations the dosage of 0%, 4.01%, 12.54%, 23.03%, 32.01%, 38.01%, 51.02% representing the percentage of hull powder in the mixture, the machine mixing gave perfectly homogeneous powders, the routine tests showed that the hull powder keeps all its properties until the end of the shaping whatever the percentage of hulls contained in the PVc, the extrusion gave tubes for each formulation and the conformity tests gave perfectly round tubes of diameter 90 × 82 mm, a coloration going from white grey at 0% to dark black at 51.02% showing the influence of the carbon black and the color of the shell powder according to its proportion. The infrared of the tubes obtained shows for each formulation a variation of the cH2 and cH bonds and a decrease of the −OH bonds. The thermogravimetric analyses and the differential calorimetric analyses of the tubes of each formulation, show each time that the quantity of shell powders in the mixture influences the PVc tubes obtained. Thus, we obtain a variation of the phase temperatures according to the dosage, giving from 108.72˚c to 76.56˚c for the glass transition temperature and from 494.71˚c to 414.56ce:normal;">&

The pyrolysis of Huadian oil shale samples were tested experimentally using the retorttechnique and simulation of pyrolysis was also done. All simulation studies were performedusing the electrical heating option of the ANSYS heat simulator. All the experiments were run bythree different heating rates （2°c/min,5°c/min and10°c/min）.The kinetic parameters of oilshale pyrolysis were also *** pyrolysis process of Huadian oil shale was firstorder reaction model. The controlling parameters studies were the final pyrolysis temperatureand the influence of the heating rate to the weight loss as well as type. Thermal gravimetricanalysis was used for analysis weight, temperature and temperature change. It was found thatincreasing the heating rate and pyrolysis temperature also increases the production of oil and thetotal weight loss. Low heating rates resulted in high rates of accumulation. The rate of shale oilaccumulation was monitored by digital mass scales. Lower heating rates resulted in higher ratesof accumulation. The rate of oil and water collection was passed through a maximum of differentheating rates at different pyrolysis temperatures. Heating rate affects the oil density, oilconversion and oil yield. Mathematical calculation were used to find the kinetic parameters（reaction order, activation energy, frequency factor） by differential method from *** was found that kinetic parameters varied with heating *** simulation model developed in this study successfully predicts the experimental resultsfor pyrolysis of Huadian oil shale. The pyrolysis process of Huadian oil shale contains three steps. The first starts between150°c and200°c, the weight loss is mainly caused by the water removal from oil shale;thesecond step is the major step of weight loss, which is attributed to the decomposition of thehydrocarbon material and last step is begin up to750°c attributed to the decomposition ofcarbonate.
