FIB-SEM tomography is a powerful technique that integrates a focused ion beam(FIB)and a scanning electron microscope(SEM)to capture high-resolution imaging data of nanostructures.This approach involves collecting in-plane SEM imagesand using FIB to remove material layers for imaging subsequent planes,thereby producing image stacks.However,theseimage stacks in FIB-SEM tomography are subject to the shine-through effect,which makes structures visible from theposterior regions of the current plane.This artifact introduces an ambiguity between image intensity and structures in thecurrent plane,making conventional segmentation methods such as thresholding or the k-means algorithm insufficient.Inthis study,we propose a multimodal machine learning approach that combines intensity information obtained at differentelectron beam accelerating voltages to improve the three-dimensional(3D)reconstruction of nanostructures.By treatingthe increased shine-through effect at higher accelerating voltages as a form of additional information,the proposed methodsignificantly improves segmentation accuracy and leads to more precise 3D reconstructions for real FIB tomography data.

The degradation behaviour of magnesium and its alloys can be tuned by small organic molecules.However,an automatic identification of effective organic additives within the vast chemical space of potential compounds needs sophisticated tools.Herein,we propose two systematic approaches of sparse feature selection for identifying molecular descriptors that are most relevant for the corrosion inhibition efficiency of chemical compounds.One is based on the classical statistical tool of analysis of variance,the other one based on random forests.We demonstrate how both can—when combined with deep neural networks—help to predict the corrosion inhibition efficiencies of chemical compounds for the magnesium alloy ZE41.In particular,we demonstrate that this framework outperforms predictions relying on a random selection of molecular descriptors.Finally,we point out how autoencoders could be used in the future to enable even more accurate automated predictions of corrosion inhibition efficiencies.

Epidemiological, Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Progressive Aspects of Arterial Hypertension in children at the University Hospital center of Bouaké (côte d’Ivoire)

Introduction: Arterial hypertension (AH) in children is under-diagnosed and often has a poor prognosis. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic and evolutionary aspects of hypertension in children at the University Hospital of Bouaké, with a view to improving the prognosis. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, analytical study carried out in the paediatrics department of Bouaké University Hospital. It concerned the medical records of children aged 4 to 15 hospitalised from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2020 for hypertension. Diagnosis was based on the simplified blood pressure guidelines of the Expert consensus of the French Society of Hypertension. The variables studied were epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic and evolutionary. Quantitative variables were compared at the significance level p ≤ 0.05. Results: The hospital incidence of hypertension was 0.32% (69/21,642). The sex ratio was 0.72. 97.1% of the children were over five years of age. Oedema (49.3%) and breathing difficulties (20.2%) were the main reasons for consultation. Hypertension was classified as threatening (56.5%), confirmed (31.9%) and borderline (11.6%). The cause was renal in 66.7%, dominated by impure nephrotic syndrome (24.6%). Treatment for hypertension consisted mainly of a diuretic (79.7%) and a calcium channel blocker (47.8%). Outcome was favourable in 50.7% of cases. Mortality was 20.3%. No factor was significantly associated with death. conclusion: Hypertension in children at Bouaké University Hospital is serious. The aetiology is mainly renal. Early diagnosis and management are key to improving prognosis.

Lagoons are ecosystems for biodiversity and the livelihoods of coastal communities. The main objective of the study was to analyze the variability of arsenic concentrations in gastropods and bivalves in the Aby and Tendo lagoons, taking into account spatial, seasonal and hydrological variations. The study was carried out in four stages spread over two successive hydroclimatic cycles, including two seasons during the rainy season and two more during the dry season. The samples were taken in two areas of the Aby and Tendo lagoons. Arsenic levels were measured by IcP-MS. The results showed that mean arsenic concentrations in the muscles of organisms in Aby Lagoon ranged from 0.01 to 1.26 μg As/g, with a mean and median of 0.17 and 0.06 μg As/g, respectively. Fish had the highest levels of arsenic, followed by crustaceans, while molluscs and plants had lower and comparable concentrations of As. Arsenic concentrations in tilapia and jawbones varied significantly between sites and seasons, with higher concentrations at Tendo and during the rainy season. Arsenic concentrations in gastropods and bivalves were significantly higher than those of other species, with averages of 0.74 and 1.03 mg As/kg, respectively.

Kinematics of whip spider pedipalps: a 3D comparative morpho-functional approach

Amblypygi are tropical and subtropical ambush predators that use elongated,raptorial pedipalps for different activities.Although pedipalp use in predation and courtship has been explored in videography in vivo analyses,kinematic ex vivo examination of these appendages has not been conducted.Here,we rectify this lack of data by using microcT scans to 3D-kinematically model the appendage morphology and the range of motion(ROM)of the joints for Damon medius and Heterophrynus elaphus.We illustrate the successful application of this technique to terrestrial euarthropods in determining the maximum ROM values for each pedipalp joint.We also note that,in life,these values would be lower due to motion restricting structures like tendons,arthrodial membranes,and muscles.We further compare our maximum values obtained here with data from video-based motion analyses.The ROM of each joint shows the greatest flexibility in the femur-tibia joint(140–150°),the lowest in the basitarsus-claw joint(35–40°).ROM in the tibia-basitarsus joint is markedly distinct(D.medius:44°;H.elaphus:105°).This disparity reflects how H.elaphus uses the joint in the capture basket,while D.medius uses the femur-tibia joint to form the capture basket.We further illustrate notable vertical motion of the H.elaphus pedipalp compared to D.medius.This difference reflects the retro-ventral trochanter apophysis of H.elaphus.Our study opens the possibility to further whip spider kinematic understanding.Examination of other taxa using this approach will result in a more comprehensive understanding of the ecological significance and ethological implications of this unique arachnid group.

Selenium is a trace element that can have both beneficial and harmful effects on aquatic life. The Aby Lagoon is a coastal environment in côte d’Ivoire that receives selenium inputs from various natural and anthropogenic sources. The aim of this study was to assess the levels of selenium in the sediments of the Aby Lagoon and its tributaries, the Tanoe River and the Tendo Lagoon, and to examine the spatial and seasonal variations of selenium concentrations. Sediment samples were collected from different sites and seasons, and selenium concentrations were measured by atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The results showed that the average concentration of selenium in the sediments of the Aby Lagoon was 0.82 mg/kg, indicating moderate contamination. The concentration of selenium varied between sites and seasons, with higher values in the channel of the Tendo Lagoon and during the dry season. The study highlighted the complexity of selenium dynamics in aquatic ecosystems, and the need to take into account seasonal and spatial variability as well as interactions between environmental factors. The study also suggested potential ecotoxicological risks for some sensitive organisms in certain areas of the lagoon. This study contributes to the knowledge of the dynamics of selenium in lagoon ecosystems and to the assessment of the environmental risks associated with its presence.

Assessment of Nitrates and Nitrites in Borehole Water from the Southern and the Northern Region of côte d’Ivoire (West Africa)

This study aimed to evaluate the quality of water from village boreholes by measuring physicochemical parameters such as nitrates, nitrites, and total organic carbon (TOc). Forty-five (45) village pumps from the Southern (Basse côte) and the Northern (Korhogo) region of cte d’Ivoire (west Africa) were sampled. Physicochemical parameters such as temperature, pH, conductivity at 25˚c, and turbidity were determined in situ, while nitrite and nitrate were analyzed according to ISO 10304-1 (2007) standard and total organic carbon (TOc) by NF EN 1484 (1997) standard. The results showed that the borehole waters of the Basse côte and Korhogo analyzed are acidic, with an average temperature of 27.51˚c ± 0.16˚c and 29.95˚c ± 0.51˚c respectively for the Basse côte and Korhogo regions. The borehole waters of the Basse côtedo not contain nitrites, while those of Korhogo have average nitrite contents of 0.32 mg/l. The average nitrate rate in the waters of the Basse côte and Korhogo are 12.08 ± 2.11 mg/l and 11.03 ± 3.18 mg/l respectively. The average TOc concentration of the waters of the Basse côte is 1.28 ± 0.32 mg/l and that of Korhogo is 0.56 ± 0.09 mg/L. The study showed that the borehole waters of the Basse côte and Korhogo have average temperatures between 27.4˚c and 29.95˚c with a slightly acidic pH value and acceptable salinity. The TOc concentrations obtained at the different sampling points were all below the French standard (2 mg/L) except for certains pumps of the Basse côte. The water samples from the Basse côte were devoid of nitrite. On the other hand, those from Korhogo revealed the presence of nitrite. Also, the borehole waters of the regions of the Basse côte and Korhogo contain relatively high nitrate contents, presumably due to anthropometric activity. Overall, our study on the quality of drinking water showed that the waters analyzed are in compliance with international standards and safe for consumption.

Assessment of the Vaccination Status of children Aged 6 to 30 Months in a Tertiary Level Health care center in côte d’Ivoire

Introduction: Vaccination coverage in côte d’Ivoire over the period 2011 to 2015 was below the target of 95% for all antigens. The objective of this study was to analyze the vaccination status of children aged 6 to 30 months with a view to improving vaccination coverage. Patients and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study which took place from June to September 2018 in a tertiary health center, focusing on children aged 6 to 30 months with a correctly completed health record. The parameters studied were sex, age, educational level of mothers, dates of vaccine administration and reason for missed vaccination opportunities. Results: We retained 212 children. The sex ratio was 1.21 and 93% had received the BcG vaccine before the age of 1 month. The average ages of combined and co-administered vaccines for the 1st and 2nd doses were 7.66 ± 3.81 and 12.88 ± 3.95 weeks, respectively. The median was 16.57 weeks for the 3rd dose. The proportion of vaccinated subjects was greater than 90% for the BcG vaccine and the 3 doses of combined vaccines, and 77% for the yellow fever and measles vaccines. The reasons for non-vaccination were attributable to the children’s parents and health facilities. conclusion: Improving vaccination coverage requires regular supply of vaccines to centers, and the involvement of all health professionals, community and religious leaders in the vaccination awareness process.

Early cisternal fibrinolysis is more effective than rescue spasmolysis for the prevention of delayed infarction after subarachnoid haemorrhage

Background To compare the efficacy of two different concepts of cisternal therapy—PREVENTIVE fibrinolysis plus on-demand spasmolysis versus REScUE spasmolysis—for the prevention of cerebral vasospasm(cVS)and delayed cerebral infarction(DcI)in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage(aSAH).Methods Retrospective analysis of 84 aSAH patients selected for cisternal therapy for DcI prevention.66 high-risk patients received PREVENTIVE cisternal therapy to enhance blood clearance.Either stereotactic catheter ventriculocisternostomy(STX-VcS)or intraoperative placement of a cisterno-ventriculostomy catheter(cVc),followed by fibrinolytic cisternal lavage using urokinase was performed.In case of vasospasm,nimodipine was applied intrathecally.22 low-risk patients who developed cVS against expectations were selected for STX-VcS as REScUE intervention for cisternal spasmolysis with nimodipine.Rates of DcI and mean flow velocities of daily transcranial Doppler(TcD)ultrasonographies were evaluated.Results Despite a higher prespecified DcI risk,patients selected for PREVENTIVE intervention primarily aiming at blood clearance had a lower DcI rate compared with patients selected for intrathecal spasmolysis as a REScUE therapy(11.3%vs 18.2%).After intrathecal treatment onset,cVS(TcD>160 cm/s)occurred in 45%of patients with PREVENTIVE and 77%of patients with REScUE therapy(p=0.013).A stronger response of cVS to intrathecal nimodipine was observed in patients with PREVENTIVE intervention as the mean cVS duration after start of intrathecal nimodipine was 3.2 days compared with 5.8 days in patients with REScUE therapy(p=0.026).conclusions PREVENTIVE cisternal therapy directed at blood clearance is more effective for the prevention of cVS and delayed infarction compared with cisternal REScUE spasmolysis.

Initial assessment of imports of chlorinated paraffins into Nigeria and the need of improvement of the Stockholm and Rotterdam conventions

Short-chain and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins(SccPs/MccPs)are of concern due to their persistence,bioaccumulation,and toxicity.SccPs were listed in 2017 as persistent organic pollutants(POPs)in the Stockholm convention and Rotterdam convention for Prior Informed consent(PIc)procedure.MccPs are evaluated in the POPs Reviewing committee for listing.Studies in Africa demonstrate high SccP/MccP levels in house dust and human milk.Therefore,this study undertook an initial assessment of the production and import situation in Nigeria.The Nigerian government has not assessed SccPs yet and has no registered exemptions for SccPs and therefore should not produce or use SccPs.Also,Nigeria has not notified Rotterdam convention of PIc procedure and,therefore,no SccP should be imported into Nigeria.Since no local production of SccPs/MccPs was observed in Nigeria,this study therefore compiled data on importation of SccPs/MccPs and products which may likely contain these chemicals from the UN comtrade Database for the period 1996 to 2018.Despite the listing of SccPs in the Rotterdam convention,there is still no specific Harmonized System(HS)codes for SccPs/MccPs.This study therefore used HS codes of product categories known to contain SccPs/MccPs.HS substance categories under which SccP/MccPs are usually imported include plasticisers and other product categories that amounted to 229,779 and 518,342 tonnes respectively but without specific information on the type of plasticiser.About 39%of PVc and rubber imports of 2,683,015 tonnes and 3,516,052 tonnes respectively contain plasticisers.Based on the SccP and MccP impact factors from literature for china,the highest amount of SccP(33,712 tonnes)was imported in the different PVc products while rubber products accounted to 1386 tonnes and PUR foam to 2331 tonnes.The amount of imported MccPs in PVc products(25,599 tonnes)and rubber products(32,317 tonnes)was in the same order of magnitude while MccP imported in PUR foam was estimated to 2020 tonnes.At the end of life(EoL),these pr
