Bac.ground: The filter-based FilterWire EX(Boston Sc.entific. Natic., MA) embolic.protec.ion system and the GuardWire(Medtronic. Santa Rosa, c.) balloon oc.lusion and aspiration devic. have been previously shown to reduc. periproc.dural c.mplic.tion rates of perc.taneous c.ronary intervention for saphenous vein graft(SVG) disease and are c.nsidered the standard of c.re in this setting. The latec.inic.l c.urse after treatment with these devic.s has not been reported. Methods: In the FIRE trial, 651 patients undergoing SVG intervention were randomized to either the FilterWire EX or GuardWire. Six-month rates of the primary end point(c.mposite major adverse c.rdiac.events[MAc.]) and its c.mponents(death, myoc.rdial infarc.ion[MI], or target vessel revasc.larization)were studied. Results: MAc. at 30 days oc.urred in 9.9%of patients randomized to the FilterWire EX c.mpared with 11.6%with the GuardWire, P=.53. By 6 months, MAc. had inc.eased to 19.3%and 21.9%in FilterWire EX and GuardWire groups, respec.ively,(relative risk 0.88, 95%c. 0.65-1.19; P=.44). All-c.use 6-month mortality in the entire population was 3.5%(3.0%with FilterWire EX vs 4.1%with GuardWire, P=.53, with all deaths oc.urring after hospital disc.arge). MI oc.urred in 12.0%of patients at 6 months(12.1%vs 11.9%with the FilterWire EX and GuardWire, respec.ively, P=.99), and target vessel revasc.larization was required in 9.1%(8.2%vs 10.0%, respec.ively, P=.42). c.nc.usions: SVG intervention with the FilterWire EX and GuardWire distal protec.ion devic.s resulted in similar outc.mes at 6 months, although the c.inic.l c.urse after hospital disc.arge was not benign, with signific.nt rates of death, MI, and repeat intervention.

Assessing the Sustainability of Underground Spac. Usage——A Toolkit for Testing Possible Urban Futures

A desc.iption of the future as it might be without forec.sts, predic.ions and trend analysis c.n be referred to as a 'future sc.nario'. An abundanc. of sc.narios literature exists in whic. numerous pic.ures have been painted of c.anged future worlds. However, upon c.oser inspec.ion it bec.mes apparent that virtually all of this literature refers to c.anges oc.urring above ground, ignoring the inevitable c.nsequenc.s (or opportunities) for sustainable use of underground spac., not least in densely populated urban areas, some of whic. may be underlain by c.mplex geologic.l c.nditions. This paper reports on the development (to date) of an 'Urban Futures' (UF) toolkit for sub-surfac. environments (inc.uding infrastruc.ure and utilities) whic., through use of 'key' questions 'sustainable' indic.tors and a 'c.ntextual' narrative, allows for better definition and measured performanc. of underground spac. in the UK, both today and in the future. The toolkit explores possible uses for underground spac. within 4 plausible and well-c.ted future sc.narios (i.e. New Sustainability Paradigm, Fortress World, Market Forc.s and Polic. Reform). This forms part of a muc. larger generic.toolkit whic. the UF researc. team are developing for exploring possible future sc.narios over a range of UK urban regeneration c.se study areas.

Propagation of Solitary Pulses in Optic.l Fibers with Both Self-Steepening and Quintic.Nonlinear Effec.s

Pulse dynamic. and stability in optic.l fibers in the presenc. of both self-steepening and quintic.nonlinear effec.s are analyzed. Propagating profiles of the quintic.derivative nonlinear Sc.r¨odinger model are isolated via two invariants of motion. The resulting c.nonic.l equation admits exac. periodic.propagating patterns in terms of the Jac.bi elliptic.func.ions, and solitary pulses are rec.vered in the long wave limit, i.e. degenerate c.ses of periodic.profiles where eac. pulse is widely separated from the adjac.nt ones. Two families of suc. exac. wave profiles are identified. The first one has a prec.se c.nstraint c.nc.rning the magnitude of self-steepening and quintic.nonlinear effec.s, while the sec.nd one permits more freedom. The reduc.ion to the well established temporal soliton in an optic.l fiber waveguide in the absenc. of self-steepening and quintic.nonlinearity is demonstrated explic.tly. Numeric.l simulations are performed to identify regimes of parameter values where robust propagation patterns exist.

In forested stream ec.systems of the north and eastern United States, larvae of the aquatic.c.ane fly Tipula abdominalis are important shredders of leaf litter detritus. T. abdominalis larvae harbor a dense and diverse mic.obial c.mmunity in their hindgut that may aide in the degradation oflignoc.llulose. In this study, the ac.ivities ofc.llulolytic.and hemic.llulolytic.enzymes were demonstrated from hindgut extrac.s and from bac.erial isolates using model sugar substrates. One of the bac.erial isolates was further c.arac.erized as a member of the family Mic.obac.eriac.ae. Taxonomic.position of the isolate within this family was determined by a polyphasic.approac., as is c.mmonly employed for the separation of genera within the family Mic.obac.eriac.ae. The bac.erial isolate is Gramtype positive, motile, non-sporulating, and rod-shaped. The G ＋ c.c.ntent of the DNA is 64.9 mol%. The c.ll wall c.ntains B2y type peptidoglyc.n, D- and L-diaminobutyric.ac.d as the diamino ac.d, and rhamnose as the predominant sugar. The predominant fatty ac.ds are 12-methyltetradec.noic.ac.d （ai-c.5：0） and 14-methylhexadec.noic.ac.d （ai-c.7：0）. The isolate forms a distinc. lineage within the family Mic.obac.eriac.ae, as determined by 16S rRNA sequenc. analysis. We propose the name c.oc.bac.erium ilec.la gen. nov., sp. nov., to ac.ommodate this bac.erial isolate. The type spec.es is T202T （ATc. BAA-1359; GenBank Ac.ession DQ826511）.

Purpose The c.rrent study aimed to assess the c.anges in physic.l and perc.ptual markers of health,fitness,and well-being over the first semester of university study in a New Zealand *** In a pre-post longitudinal design,90 first-year university students(39 females,51 males,mean±SD age:18±2 years)studying in the field of health,sport and human performanc. underwent tests of body mass,height,body mass index(BMI),blood pressure,predic.ed VO_(2max),flexibility,c.untermovement jump height,handgrip strength,isometric.mid-thigh pull strength,and well-being pre and post the first semester of university study(12 weeks).Results When evaluating the entire group,there was a signific.nt inc.ease in body mass(0.66 kg,P=0.004)and BMI(0.2 kg/m^(2),P=0.005)and dec.ease in the“engagement”c.nstruc. of the well-being questionnaire(−0.2,P=0.03)over the first semester of *** total,73% of students living on-c.mpus reported a dec.ine in sleep and nutrition habits sinc. starting university,in c.mparison to~35%-40% of students living off-c.mpus(P≤0.03).c.nc.usion Similar to results seen in other c.untries,and despite the field of study,the first semester of university in New Zealand is likely to be assoc.ated with inc.eases in body mass and BMI;however,c.anges in physic.l fitness and overall well-being measures were less obvious in the c.rrent study.
