Advanced strategies for marine antifouling based on nanomaterial-enhanced functional PDMS coatings

Marine biofouling seriously affects human marine exploitation and transportation activities, to which marine antifouling(Af) coatings are considered to be the most cost-effective solution. Since the mid-20th century, human beings have dedicated their efforts on developing Af coatings with long cycle and high performance, leading to a large number of non-target organisms? distortion, death and marine environmental pollution. Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS), is considered as one of the representative environment-friendly Af materials thanks to its non-toxic, hydrophobic, low surface energy and Af properties. However, PDMS Af coatings are prone to mechanical damage, weak adhesion strength to substrate, and poor static Af effect, which seriously restrict their use in the ocean. The rapid development of various nanomaterials provides an opportunity to enhance and improve the mechanical properties and antifouling properties of PDMS coating by embedding *** on our research background and the problems faced in our laboratory, this article presents an overview of the current progress in the fields of PDMS composite coatings enhanced by different nanomaterials, with the discussion focused on the advantages and main bottlenecks currently encountered in this field. finally, we propose an outlook, hoping to provide fundamental guidance for the development of marine Af field.

Control and vibration analyses of a sandwich doubly curved micro-composite shell with honeycomb, truss, and corrugated cores based on the fourth-order shear deformation theory

Curved shells are increasingly utilized in applied engineering due to their shared characteristics with other sandwich structures, flexibility, and attractive appearance. However, the inability of controlling and regulating vibrations and destroying them afterward is a challenge to scientists. In this paper, the curve shell equations and a linear quadratic regulator are adopted for the state feedback design to manage the structure vibrations in state space forms. A five-layer sandwich doubly curved micro-composite shell, comprising two piezoelectric layers for the sensor and actuator, is modeled by the fourth-order shear deformation theory. The core(honeycomb, truss, and corrugated) is analyzed for the bearing of transverse shear forces. The results show that the honeycomb core has a greater effect on the vibrations. When the parameters related to the core and the weight percentage of graphene increase, the frequency increases. The uniform distribution of graphene platelets results in the lowest natural frequency while the natural frequency increases. furthermore, without taking into account the piezoelectric layers,the third-order shear deformation theory(TSDT) and fourth-order shear deformation theory(fOSDT) align closely. However, when the piezoelectric layers are incorporated,these two theories diverge significantly, with the frequencies in the fOSDT being lower than those in the TSDT.

Socioecological inequity in environmental data science—such as inequities deriving from data-driven approaches and machine learning(ML)—are current issues subject to debate and *** is growing consensus around embedding equity throughout all research and design domains—from inception to administration,while also addressing procedural,distributive,and recognitional ***,practically doing so may seem onerous or daunting to *** current perspective helps to alleviate these types of concerns by providing substantiation for the connection between environmental data science and socioecological inequity,using the Systemic Equity framework,and provides the foundation for a paradigmatic shift toward normalizing the use of equity-centered approaches in environmental data science and ML *** the integrity of environmental data science and ML is just beginning from an equity-centered tool development and rigorous application *** this end,this perspective also provides relevant future directions and challenges by overviewing some meaningful tools and strategies—such as applying the Wells-Du Bois Protocol,employing fairness metrics,and systematically addressing irreproducibility;emerging needs and proposals—such as addressing data-proxy bias and supporting convergence research;and establishes a ten-step path ***,the work that environmental scientists and engineers do ultimately affect the well-being of us all.

Lesser kestrels of the same colony do not overwinter together

Migratory connectivity describes the linkage between breeding and nonbreeding sites,having major ecological implications in birds:1 season influence the success of an individual or a population in the following *** studies on migratory connectivity have used large-scale approaches,often considering regional populations,but fine-scale studies are also necessary to understand colony *** lesser kestrel falco naumanni,an insectivorous migratory raptor which form colonies during the breeding period,was considered to have strong connectivity based on regional ***,no small-scale studies on migratory connectivity have been ***,we GPS(Global Positioning System)-tracked 40 adult lesser kestrels from 15 different Spanish breeding colonies,estimating the overlap index between home ranges and the distance between their *** was found that lesser kestrels from the same breeding colony placed their nonbreeding areas at 347±281 km(mean±standard deviation)away from each other(range=23-990),and their home ranges over-lapped by 38.4±23.6%.No differences between intra-colony and inter-colony metrics were found,which suggests that lesser kestrels from the same breeding cluster do not overwinter together,but they spread out and mixed independently of the colony belonging throughout the nonbreeding range of the ***,this study highlights the importance of performing connectivity studies using fine-scale approaches.

Identific tion of quantitative trait loci and associated candidate genes for pregnancy success in Angus–Brahman crossbred heifers

Background In beef cattle, more than 50% of the energy input to produce a unit of beef is consumed by the female that produced the calf. Development of genomic tools to identify females with high genetic merit for reproductive function could increase the profitability and sustainability of beef *** Genome-wide association studies(GWAS) were performed using a single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction approach on pregnancy outcome traits from a population of Angus–Brahman crossbred heifers. furthermore, a validation GWAS was performed using data from another farm. Heifers were genotyped with the Bovine GGP f250 array that contains 221,077 SNPs. In the discovery population, heifers were bred in winter breeding seasons involving a single round of timed artificial insemination(AI) followed by natural mating for 3 months. Two phenotypes were analyzed: pregnancy outcome to first-service AI(PAI;n = 1,481) and pregnancy status at the end of the breeding season(PEBS;n = 1,725). The heritability was estimated as 0.149 and 0.122 for PAI and PEBS, respectively. In the PAI model, one quantitative trait locus(QTL), located between 52.3 and 52.5 Mb on BTA7, explained about 3% of the genetic variation, in a region containing a cluster of γ-protocadherin genes and SLC25A2. Other QTLs explaining between 0.5% and 1% of the genetic variation were found on BTA12 and 25. In the PEBS model, a large QTL on BTA7 was synonymous with the QTL for PAI, with minor QTLs located on BTA5, 9, 10, 11, 19, and 20. The validation population for pregnancy status at the end of the breeding season were Angus–Brahman crossbred heifers bred by natural mating. 在团簇科学中,搜索金属团簇的全局最小能量结构具有重要的意义.最近,深度神经网络结合迁移学习的全局优化方法被开发出来,以提高金属团簇结构的优化效率,该方法可以大幅减少训练深度神经网络所需的样本数量.为了进一步提高势能面的采样效率和深度神经网络结合迁移学习的全局优化方法的全局搜索能力,本文提出了一种将基因遗传算法嵌入到深度神经网络结合迁移学习中的全局优化方法.在Pt_(n)(n=9-15)团簇的全局优化中,该方法只需要深度神经网络结合迁移学习的全局优化方法一半的样本数量就能优化得到全局最优结构,同时节省了约70%~80%的计算成本,这表明全局搜索能力的显著提升。在Pt_(14)团簇势能面上的采样结果显示,该方法搜索到低能量的样本(占比25%)比深度神经网络结合迁移学习方法的样本(占比<1%)更多.在Pt_(16)和Pt_(17)团簇的全局最优结构搜索中,本文报道了文献中尚未报道的新结构,证明本论文建立的方法的可行性和先进性.

Premature axon-oligodendrocyte interaction contributes to stalling of experimental axon regeneration after injury to the white matter

Studies from nearly 3 decades ago suggested that,in the central nervous system(CNS),myelination of axons by oligodendrocytes not only helps improve axonal conductivity but also stabilizes circuitry(Colello and Schwab,1994).Over the years,myelin sheaths produced by oligodendrocytes have been found to contain multiple molecules that are inhibitory to axonal growth(e.g.,MAG,NogoA,OMgp,Semaphorins)(Yiu and He,2006;Silver et al.,2014).After white matter injury in the adult CNS,myelin debris from damaged axons and dead oligodendrocytes accumulates in the forming glial scar and exposes these myelin-associated axon growth-inhibitory molecules to the injured axonal stumps,thereby contributing to the inhibition of axonal *** development,CNS axons reach their postsynaptic targets and stop growing before oligodendrocytes appear and myelinate them(foran and Peterson,1992;Dangata et al.,1996).Therefore,myelin-associated axon growth-inhibitory molecules interacting with already grown axons during myelination were thought to block axons from promiscuous sprouting and miswiring,thereby stabilizing neural circuitry in the CNS(Colello and Schwab,1994).

There is controversy in the literature on where to place the tourniquet(thigh,calf,ankle)for foot and ankle *** some authors prefer the ankle tourniquet to the calf tourniquet,others state that the surgeon can decide between using the thigh tourniquet or the ankle tourniquet,since there was no difference in postoperative pain between *** to place the tourniquet during foot and ankle surgery to cause the least possible postoperative pain to the patient as a result of the tourniquet is a common question in clinical *** reality is that,unfortunately,there is no consensus on this *** the only possible way to answer this question would be to conduct a comparative study with sufficient statistical power to reach scientifically sound *** does not seem easy to carry out such a study,but it would be important to be able to answer the question posed in the title of this Editorial once and for all.
